My Overview of Pokemon Ultra Sun & Moon

  • Hi friends! So today's video is gonna be taking a look at my opinions & experiences with the newest games, Ultra Sun and Moon.
    I plan to make a Version Differences video for the games soon but first I wanted to try my hand at my first overview style video. I
    t's kind of like a review, but the word review implies that this video has a structure when really it's just scripted rambles
    All footage was recorded on my own legit games EXCEPT-
    The Mohn cutscene is courtesy of Maxx Ezzy because I was pushed for time and couldn't record it.

    Necrozmas dex entry does mention that if it doesn't consume light, impurities build up which then cause it to stop moving. So it's possible that it's really doing it out of survival.

    How to win US/UM:
    Step 1: Get a Gastly and have it learn curse
    Step 2: Get max affection, speed and happiness
    Step 3: Use curse on every single important boss Pokemon
    Step 4: Stall for 4-10 turns to win the battle 😂
    That was my entire playthrough.

  • @generallegath974
    @generallegath974 6 лет назад +82

    Platinum probably changed more than USUM did, for the record.
    But I think the reason people were upset with them changing so little was the fact that they were seemingly set up to be like Black 2/White 2. Advertised with a new storyline and all. Not only that, but every other time a game has just been an "improvement", like Platinum, Emerald, etc. it has been one version. Not an entire new set of games that are basically marketed like their own standalone titles.
    I mean, I'm not saying I agree with all the USUM hate (because although I know what the games added and all, I have hardly picked it up to play it - I got it a couple/few weeks ago and I've barely started just because I don't want to at the moment) but that's probably why they were such a disappointment. The fact that it's two versions also now feels more like a "cheap tactic" to get people to buy both simply due to version exclusives, when it's already so similar to S/M.

    • @andpeggy3987
      @andpeggy3987 5 лет назад +14

      I think you know where those of us who dislike USUM are coming from - (Spoiler Warning Here for USUM, SuMo, and Gen V)
      Like you said, they were set up in the way BW2 were. While USUM aren’t necessarily sequels, They were set up as an “all-new” story. Aaaand then they weren’t. Sure, it didn’t take ~30 minutes to get our starter, and there were some amazing new features (Mantine Surf, a few new Pokemon, some new Z-Moves being the most notable additions that I enjoy) so yeah, they were okay games... on their own.
      I played through Sun when it came out, and I bought Ultra Sun thinking it would be like BW2 in a way (that is how GF kinda made us think about it.) I found it dissapointing. The Ultra Recon Squad felt tacked on and somewhat unimportant, and the major story differences? They didn’t show up until really late game.
      The new story of USUM was dissapointing as well. They sacrificed Lillie’s arc for Lusamine and Hau! Her “Z-Powered form” scenes feel out-of-place and her arc feels much less important than it was before. It just wasn’t an enjoyable experience for someone who had played Sun the year before.
      Then, the games they had hyped it up to be like (mainly BW2 to BW) were so much better. There WAS a different story, and it was interesting. It was much less hand-holdy (I know this as I’m replaying Black 2 and White 2 was my first game, though I’ve played every game since then and gone back to play older ones as well) so when they stole the dual forms thing and didn’t even bother to change a majority of the storyline? That was frustrating.
      I think that’s where a majority of the hate stems from. It was too similar for those of us who had played the games before, and it took SuMo’s story and kind of ruined it... It was a step back in story, and it felt lazy, like GF just slapped a bandaid on SuMo and said, “Release it as an ULTRA version.” It felt a bit like a cheap cashgrab, and I had wanted to enjoy the games!

    I think Ultra Sun and Moon are great remakes, I just wish they were more upfront with it prior to release. nintendo/game freak put the national dex behind a paywall, it's part of the pokebank

    • @heresiarch.
      @heresiarch. 6 лет назад +14

      I don't understand the hype around National Dex. It's incredibly obnoxious, making the Shiny charm impossible to get for casual players or people who have not played earlier games. Additionally, if you have played the earlier games, what's so fun about just transferring hundreds of Pokémon to fill the National Dex again and again each generation? Besides, that can be used as a bad shortcut to fill the Dex almost immediately, defeating the whole purpose of catching Pokémon in-game.
      The way it is now is much better. The shiny charm is accessible for everyone and there's no constant transferring of Pokémon. The only negative there might be is that you can't read the Dex entries if you don't have Poké Bank. But let's be honest, who actually reads them in-game? Everyone check the Dex entries from the internet anyway. Plus, if we got a National Dex, we would still need Poké Bank to transfer the Pokémon to a new game. So then you would already have Poké Bank with the Dex entries, why would the new game need a National Dex on top of that? It's just pointless repetitiveness and would make the Shiny charm behind a massive wall.
      Speaking of walls, the argument of having the Pokédex behind a "paywall" is kind of ridiculous since the price is very cheap and lasts a year. Add to that the fact that Pokémon games are already cheaper than most other games, so you're not really paying anything extra. Anyone can make a fiver a year. Compare that to the massive cost of filling a National Dex for a new player. They would have to buy an earlier game from *every* generation to fill the Dex and get the Shiny charm. And that still wouldn't be possible because of event-only Pokémon. People hoping for National Dex need to understand their privilege of just transferring Pokémon from earlier gens, which the majority of players don't have.

    • @marcoaraujo88
      @marcoaraujo88 6 лет назад +1

      Heresiarch, I don't think most of your arguments are valid, especially for a true Pokémon gamer. Firstly, getting a shiny charm via completing the national dex could be very fun and challenging, since in past games shiny Pokémon were much more rare and had more value. Even if you disagree with that, you would have to agree that this could be easily dealt with by adding a national dex and keeping a just a regional dex completion as a requirement.
      About transferring Pokémon, it is easy to see why that would be fun or even necessary. It is a way to keep your old and dearly trained/caught Pokémon from older games usable today, and also a way to keep mons from other regions if you're gonna sell your older games for example. Or you could think of them as part of your memories in past journeys. And regarding the dex entries, yes, people DO read them and its even a frequent subject for RUclips videos. It is a way to make those games stories more rich and relatable. Also, every version and generation has a diferente text, adding more to the lore of each Pokémon. I love this feature and I'm sure I'm not alone.
      Regarding the price of the bank, it really depends on the country, but for some people even a couple of bucks could make a difference to buy a new game or something important, so its hard to judge this one. Rather thant that, its really annoying having to close your game, opening the bank, and connecting to the internet (which is required to use it and a decent connection is not found everywhere) just to check a simple thing like an entry for a specific mon, stealing away any fun it may have had. The price of the games themselves are not lower than most games to intentionally compensate for the bank so it's really an invalid argument in my opinion. Their value are what they're worth for the market and that's that... and I can even give you a contrary example to that with ultra sun/moon which are basically DLCs for Sun and Moon and should be half the price they currently go for.
      I still think the lack of a national dex was one of the fatal flaws in this gen. One of the many reasons it is my least favorite.

    The reason why I don’t really agree with a lot of youtubers on the inclusion of national pokedex into the newer games is that there are now just, a lot of pokemons which makes it quite impossible for newer fans who only got USUM/SM as their pokemon games to finish the pokedex. I don’t really mind collecting pokemons from older generations, but the mythical ones... its quite impossible to get unless hacked.
    I think keeping one regional pokedex is a good idea for newer games but gamefreak can probably add more pokemon to the roster, excluding the mythicals and legendaries. USUM was a great attempt at this.
    Just my opinion though.

      I agree completely. National Dex is bad, people just have nostalgia about it and can't comprehend the struggles of new players because they already have the luxury of transferring every Pokémon from earlier games.

      Actually, to get some Mythical Pokémon, you must transfer them from an older game, same for Pokémon not obtainable in SM/USUM.

    I prefer not having a National Dex. You don't need to go outside of these games for a 100% playthrough and you also get the Shiny Charm a lot more manageably.

    I have the [ New ] 3DS XL and even in regular Sun and Moon the lag in double battles is pretty bad.
    The lack of National Dex is especially baffling since they blatantly re-used the character models from X and Y. I did feel like they really phoned it in having so many Pokemon just completely unavailable and basically saying "I hope you have a Gen 6 game and a Bank subscription!" but between the lack of a national dex and the one-way nature of transferring (Seriously, why though?) I'm not exactly inspired to lock my Pokemon out of the games that I would actually want to revisit again, in favor of a region that won't even let you re-battle trainers.

      Yeah, I don't understand being against modern EXP. Share.
      Previous to the change, I would have a top-heavy team. My starter or box legendary crazy overleveled and _destroying_ every battle, meanwhile my other 'mons were super underleveled and I didn't want to waste time buffing them up before I could actually use them.
      Modern EXP. Share is a blessing for variety.

      I think it's more due to how broken it was in 6th gen with how the leveling system was. tweaking it gen7 made things more fair with little grinding
      even with the exp all you can get destroyed by some of the late game battles

    • @_Altus
      @_Altus 6 лет назад +5

      Cameron Sweet
      I never said I ran from battles or skipped trainers. I've fought every trainer I've came across. Almost every random battle I've fought. And every game I had an incredibly overleveled Starter because all the random 'mons in the area were severely lower level and it was a _chore_ to catch anything up you might have caught earlier.
      I've never had trouble with these games... This has nothing to do with difficulty.
      Good for you. Glad you enjoyed something. I didn't, many people didn't, and there you go. Switch off the Share if you don't like the change. Complaining about a feature in hopes of it being removed is selfish. You're denying a more fun game to other people even though you don't need to touch the Share at all if you don't want to.
      Enjoyment is subjective, and to many people, if there is no gain, there is no enjoyment (reward). Spending time before something fun can be done is... simply wasted time. I could be using that time doing something else. *Don't waste my time.*
      I happen to love RPGs, don't assume things. A good RPG makes grinding enjoyable. Made it not *feel* like grinding. Pokemon has never done this. With the new system in place, I could easily change _my entire team_ on a whim and not lose any significant time. Prior to Gen 6, you'd be boned the moment you left your Starter or other lead 'mons behind. Do you really want to be shackled to the same six Pokemon the *entire* game?
      Battle leads with Abra > Switch to Starter... ad nauseam. Not fun for most people, and not "rewarding". I don't know where this idea comes from in certain people. You're not being rewarded by wasting time, you're being *forced* to participate in a time sink for some goal. That's like saying you're being "rewarded" for spending thousands of dollars for a vehicle. No, you're spending money to some end.

      What do you even want me to say at this point?
      You clearly haven't been understanding a word I've said.
      I *never once* said I had any difficulty with these games. Get that through your skull.
      I'm playing the game for my enjoyment. If I'm not enjoying it, I have every right to wish things change for me. In this case, they did, and I'm glad they did.
      You don't like the change, and that's all it is. You can argue all you want, but your opinions aren't going to change anything.
      I'm not going to argue with yet another person who can't accept differing tastes.

    My biggest problem with USUM is the fact that the climax feels so lazy. Like you mentioned, Ultra Megalopolis or whatever it's called is incredibly disappointing, equating to what is basically a hallway and is NOTHING like it was advertised to be.
    (SPOILERS)
    The fight with Ultra Necrozma was one of the most blatant and egregious forms of forced difficulty I have ever seen. Black and White 2 were difficult because the trainers had strong Pokemon with special movesets and items, USUM is hard because it's cheap. I went into the Ultra Necrozma fight with a Salamence, Salazzle, Tropius, Krookodile, Ampharos, and a 6IV Vaporeon. The only reason I even had a chance of winning that fight was because of my Vaporeon, and only because it was 6IV. Yeah, I know the trick with Zoroark, but the fact that you HAVE to cheap out Ultra Necrozma to not get destroyed utterly is completely ridiculous. To me, that is USUM's biggest failing.
    That said, I really do enjoy the games, and they took a ton of steps in the right directions. The trials were interesting, the game had much better pacing and felt more finished than SuMo, there were tons of little sidequests and even more tons of little things to do when you're finished with your adventure. Rainbow Rocket was the best postgame of the 3D era, and the added Pokemon, minigames, and shiny hunting method make this feel like a game I can always come back to. If I had to rate it, I'd give USUM a 7/10, compared to the 6/10 I'd give Sun and Moon. It's the Sun and Moon we should've gotten, and thats really the best thing I can say about it. It's good, it's Pokemon.

      Raphaël Khoury yeah that final ultra beast boss fight is hard. I wasn't gonna hop on the Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon wagon because I thought it was over hyped. I liked Ultra Sun better than Sun but it's because Sun wasn't great to begin with. They made Lusamine more likable. And just to give you a heads-up warning: I grinded my Dusk Lycanroc to level 80 and still got 1 shot fainted by the "boss" and I had my Lycanroc ev trained and such. I max revived it and used roto boosts and roto HP restores. I had a bunch of those because I didn't have any use for them until the Megalopolis boss. It was my fault though because I assumed I over leveled Lycanroc so I had lower level Pokemon that I was leveling up to evolve so every Pokemon I had was waaayy underleveled. I actually enjoyed it though because this was harder than Cynthia was in gen 4 and the only reason I even won was all the Rotom Dex loto powers I had...

It was mainly a team effort since my Zoroark got one shot but a good team effort of Decidueye, Noivern and the one who has now earned the title of "Godslayer" Golisopod brought it down. I never really thought a lot about how alike Generation V & Generation VII really were until you brought up all the similarities they shared between them - they both made strong deviations from the stereotypical Pokémon formula like you mentioned, and I feel Generation VII, much like Generation V, will be looked back on really favourably in a few years time once the fickle expectations of the fandom have time to simmer down. Even if only for removing HMs, but hopefully for everything else it offers too!

      TheGrandRevo As an avid Pokemon fan, I have played Gen 5 more than I can even count. I played it on release, and I am still playing it to this day. They are fun games, tbh. My most favorite generation, but Gen 7 is 2-3 spots below; meaning, they are so good. I agree with the Kanto pandering, but I disagree with everything else. varied locales? wdym? if anything, that’s a good thing. I loved the region design of Alola; in fact, I love it more than any other region, even Galar. Second, easy gameplay? Now, BW were easy, in my opinion; on the other hand, BW2 were the most difficult game I’ve ever played. When it comes to Gen 7, SM was challenging than Gen 6, but compared to Gens 3-5, it’s not that difficult. USUM, on the other hand WERE challenging. I can’t even recall how many times I’ve lost and struggled in that game; it was really fun! Lastly, when it comes to enhancements, USUM were actual enhancements; heck, they did more than any other 3rd version, as they added mantine surfing, ultra warp ride, TONS of sidequests, Battle Agency, and so much more. I really disdain the fact that there people who shit on USUM, yet are praising Emerald and Platinum; it’s just hypocritical of the toxic Pokemon community. Anyway, Gen 5 and Gen 7 are more than amazing generations. They both changed the Pokemon for the better, in my opinion. Honestly, if it weren’t for Gen 5, I would’ve not been a big Pokemon fan today, and if it were not for Gen 7, I would’ve been burned our of Pokemon for basically shoving in the same thing every other generation. In summary, I loved Gen 5 and 7. Though, in my opinion, the former trumps the latter, they are both very stunning, creative, amazing generations that I hope Gen 9 will replicate.

    I'm having trouble getting through Ultra Sun tbh. The amount of times the adventure is halted by a cut scene, road block, and/or forced character interaction really pulls me out of the gaming experience by killing my ability to immerse myself fully into the adventure. The severe lack of freedom caused mostly by unavoidable interruptions *just* as I'm starting to get into the flow frustrates me so much in US that I keep turning the game off, sometimes for a couple of days at a time. I didn't seem to have as much of an issue with this when playing both Sun and Moon, as I think there is even less freedom in US/UM.
    The lack of new pokemon is also a ridiculous missed opportunity on Game Freaks part, especially considering how easy it *could* have been, given all they had to do was tinker around with the design of an already existing pokemon and call it a new Alola form. I mean, they gave us a new lycanroc form but just added the same old Kanto form ekans and arbok, really???

    1:53 Actually, no. USUM have less changes then Emerald and Platinum. It's like they attached a bandade to Sun and Moon and called it a day. The Ultra Recon Squad appeared a few times, but it felt like they didn't need to be there. It feels rushed, incomplete and rather unoriginal. They tried to do the Black and White 2 thing with Necromza's forms, but other then that, why was there a need for 2 versions? Platinum at least had huge changes to a lot of areas and added new areas too. Not to mention more exclusive features.
    And maybe USUM are like this because it only had 1 year of development time. Platinum and Black and White 2 had 2 years of development time, while Emerald took almost 2 years of developing.
    I hope the Switch game won't dissapoint. I hope it releases in at least 2019. 2020 would be great. 2018 is too soon. 2 years of developing isn't enough for an entirely new generation. Especially since Diamond and Pearl and Black and White took 4 years to develop. X and Y took 3 years, and look how rushed that game was. The 3DS Pokemon game just feel rushed in general.

      UsUm added fusions,new pokemons,new z moves,more legendaries than ever,team raimbow rocket with all old bad guys wile platinum and emerald were just like the same game that got fusionated to each other so that there is not any exclusivity to anything .

    I own Ultra Sun and I freaking LOVED everything about it! Even the post game! I thought the Ultra Worm Hole ride side thing was amazing! I also adored the plot, the cut scenes were fantastic, and I thought it was all around a spectacular game! Having to battle Hau instead of Kukui in the end was so much fun!
    When I went up against Totem Togedemaru I somehow dragged the battle on for so long that the Totem Pokémon eventually had to use Struggle and it eventually knocked itself out!😂
    Also, when I encountered Necrozma just before the Pokémon League I managed to capture it while it's health was still in the yellow zone without a status condition and caught it with the first Ultra Ball I threw!😂
    I had an amazing time with this game, as I did with all the other 3DS/2DS Pokémon RPG games and i am going to get Ultra Moon soon too! So far I own every single 3DS Pokémon RPG game that's out! 😄😄

    I'm barely half way through the game, so far i love the game. Its a nice new challenge with how much harder it is.
    My only complaint is the rotom dex. It NEVER shuts up, i could be trying to make it to a new route but i can't see the map becaus rotom has to talk about how i can register a ride Pokemon or something else stupid.
    It does this every other few minutes and it's so annoying.
    Out of everything i only hate the rotom dex in this game. Other then that i think it's fantastic, love most of the characters, gameplay and side quests

    See,the difference between Emerald and US/UM for me is bright as day (not saying that the game is bad,mind you.)
    - For starters, when i played Pokemon Ultra Moon, i was hoping for some huuge change,like one you could expect from Black/White 2 for example. So i kept my head up. During 40-50 % of my playthrough,i saw one major difference, the Ops duo. I thought to myself "is this like Emerald? A sudden change at the last sequence?". I kept that idea and hoped that something would resonate out of this,but nothing did. The story was kind of bland (to say the nicest) and the unexpected were...well,expected (like the final battle in pokemon league was hau,i saw it coming from a mile away...). The only appeal for me in this game was Lusamine (who didn't turn evil,yay! )
    - The comparison with Emerald and US/UM is hard to make , mainly because of standards between previous game, the more modern the game,the bigger the standards. When i first played Emerald,the one thing that blew me away was the moving sequence the pokemon had when they appear (If you played Emerald,you know what i'm talking about.) . It was something i didn't see before in a pokemon game,not to mention the amazing cutscene with Groudon and Kyogre. So Gamefreak did some effort to improve the game,graphic wise.
    -In Ultra sun or Moon,i didn't see anything changing graphic wise comparing from Sun to Moon (The mini wave game was kind of boring to be honest,and the graphic could've been better.)

  • @Possumbreath
    @Possumbreath 6 лет назад +4

    I think this is a pretty good overview! I'm another person who really liked the changes to the Aether family dynamic and giving Lusamine more reason for what she did (even if it didn't change how awful it was -- if anything giving her a more interesting reason just makes her bad actions as a mother hit harder). also SAME wrt the exp share -- I actually played Ultra Moon with it off for almost the entirety of the game and I had a heck of a struggle in a lot of places, but it felt super rewarding to have to push myself and train thoughtfully to get through it. It was nice that the game upped the difficulty so people who like the challenge could experience it.
    Only real negative was Ultra Megalopolis. I expected a whole city or at least a route, not just a straightaway and some stairs. They built it up waaaaaay too much for what they gave us.
    TL;DR Your oreo score is spot-on!

    I could tell by this for the battles. Due to the issues of Double Battles in Sun and Moon, and the same for Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon was, due to the power of the 3ds, and its limitation, the frame rates drop to 30 FPS. Single battle are a 60+ FPS, but if we imply Triple and Rotation Battles, the frame rate will be around 10 FPS, maybe, or it'll crash the game altogether. The same if we used the 3D scope. During X and Y, the battles became awkward because of frame rate issues, which is why it was drop in Gen 7 altogether after what happened in Gen 6. Will the Switch finally fix this issue? Only time will tell.

    I have absolutely no problem with Game Freak.... well, remaking the game to make a quick buck and "polish" up things. Here's what bothers me, though:
    1. Changes to the pokemon available
    2. Changes to the story &/or postgame (I'm still on my first playthrough, bought the game ages ago. Just going by what I've heard)
    But most importantly...
    3. There is absolutely no support or further patches/development on the original Sun & Moon. They won't even update the Global Missions. It's depressing, and I'm not starting over / spending more money on essentially the same exact game.
    Sorry to rant, it just blew my mind when I found out. I spent a lot of time/effort trading and training my pokemon as I've finally gotten back into it, but now, I doubt I'll be buying another Pokemon game after over 20 years of playing. :'(

    One more similarity that Gen 7 has with Gen 5 is that the poster legendaries for the later versions both involve fusion of the previous version mascot and the current one. Gen 7 actually went through with the final form though, while BW2 didn't feature the final fusion of the 3 dragons I one body like they implied to have existed.

Sure you got the option of choosing what dex entry you have the chance of reading between 8 games but the lack of the 3D models that you would see on the top screen was a big letdown.

I've actually just started a fourth playthrough of Moon, so once I've finished I'll probably want to take a break from Alola for a little while! I also feel like it's not really worth paying full price for an enhanced version - I'd rather wait a bit and get a cheaper copy. The fossil park guy was easily more upsetting though. I thought SURELY we'd get to see his dream fully realized this time around with an area full of living fossil mons akin to Jurassic Park that you can go catch, but nope. Nothing happened.

      Quoting the Pokémon Platinum commercial, "prepare for one of the most exciting Pokémon adventures yet. An epic new journey awaits you." It isn't a new issue. I think it's just the fact that there hadn't been anything truly akin to a third version for so long that people had thought they were past that, and had higher expectations. Combined with the fact that Black and White 2 happened, people had higher hopes. With those hopes now crushed, many people expect the worst for the next game.

    I hope they discontinue the multi-release of three or four almost identical games. Usually the re-release version is the better versions they should have released first.

    • @_Altus

      Agreed.
      I love Pokemon, but they should have only ever sold one version per release. The "third" or "sequel" game is the best one, so just sell that one. This multiple copies thing is just a clear and unashamed exploitation of your customers. Not to mention all those _fun_ events out there, that often cost money to take part in.

      Not all events are free. Many, especially recently, required further purchases, some required pre-orders, and others required specific regions of the world to obtain. But one thing is universally true; All of them had either limited "stock" (even those that were purely digital, and therefore had unlimited stock) or a limited window of availability.
      Instead of, you know, just making them obtainable in the game to begin with.
      (Sorry if this is coming off as snarky. I love Pokemon, as I said, it's just sad when they do these things and no-one calls them out on it.)

      Jake Vaughan I feel like they did that on purpose. I feel the same way. From my point of view because it's an alternate universe I think they wanted to draw a parallel so that you care for them in one dimension, but dislike them in the other. That's just how I try to make it make sense to me.

    1:55, THANK YOU! Out of all the arguments I've gotten into relating Ultra Moon (in my case like yours) to Emerald and Platinum, I've had my head metaphorically bitten off with such things as "these games aren't comparable and you're dumb for saying such a thing". I loved Platinum, so why can't Ultra Moon serve as an Alola defining version?

    I am glad that they dialed down Lusamine's abuse of her children in these games, while in the first games...yeah...even in the world of Pokemon that felt TOO disconcerting...

    Is nobody going to comment about the mini roll comparison?! *I love it!*
    Btw, yes, there are mini rolls outside of the UK. They're called Swiss Rolls here in the US.
