- If you've ever had a filling then you can relate to the weird feeling of having a fat lip for a few hours after you leave the dental office. One of the questions I get a lot is how long will my lip be numb? When can I eat again?
That's a really great question and the answer really depends on a few main things. The generic answer is it will take 2-3 hours for the anesthetic to wear off, but you wouldn't be reading this if you wanted the generic answer.
The main things that determine how long the anesthetic will last in your mouth are:
1) Your genetics and metabolism
2) Type of anesthetic used
3) Amount of anesthetic used
4) Location of numbness (top vs bottom jaw)

My bottom lip is num and I'm mad because i couldn't eat my fried chicken in peace because some of it kept sliding out of my mouth and my tooth hurts when i bite down and i was starving then i bit my lip 5 time but i couldn't feel anything hope i don't feel it later.

I'm so glad I ate before I went to the dentist. If not I would be mad. I can't even drink water comfortably. It's so hard being restricted. With two injections on bottom right side, my ear, mouth and jaw is so numb.

Had dental work on my lower left side that explains it all thanks for the info feel much relieved knowing the reason why it’s lasting long. Had it numbed around 4:35 today was out around 5:16 and it’s 8:26 p.m. and it still feels numb and it’s very hard for me to eat something. Watching this video gave me relief knowing it will take a little longer to wear off. So once again thank you so much ☺️
And probably the dosage of anesthesia made it last longer than usual. But like you said the bottom part always last a little longer than the top teeth. So relieved 😌

I did my bottom inner left? and it's been one to two hours and it's still fully numb. It really bothers me right now and I want it to go away so I can practice playing the flute for my school band. I guess it'll take a bit longer... This is so annoying...

Got my 2 of my wisdom teeth pulled out earlier today. My anesthesia last 4 and half hours. Thereafter the pain is excruciating.😭

I experienced transient facial paralysis after dental appt, which went away in few hours of anesthesia becoming inactive. Hi I’m not sure if you can help but just recently I went to get two teeth pulled and the anesthesia they administered , gave me a throbbing pain in my heart for an entire day is this normal ? No palpitations Just throbbing dull pain that came and went every few hours till the next day very scary feeling.
I’m afraid of getting more dental work done due to this issue . I have a few more teeth to get pulled . Is there an alternative for me as far as anesthesia goes ? Why did this happen. I have no heart issues was cleared by cardiologist weeks ago. The dental team I worked with left me still clueless as to what I should do.

Shoot, I got the bottom row.
I had my wisdom tooth extraction 6 days back. Still now my left jaw line is numb, feels heavy sometimes, tingling feeling at times. And sometimes it pains really bad. Will it get back to normal, I am really worried. It's such a bad and uncomfortable feeling. I can't eat, talk and smile properly. I can't place my lips properly since the numbness weigh my lips down. Will it be back to normal?
I just woke up with just my lip being numb on the right side, I got so confused and I have no idea how it happened.
Is it helpful to massage the numbed area to speed the recovery?
I got my wisdom teeth out earlier (all 4) and my bottom lip and jaw have been numb for 16 hours no pain anywhere and I’m thankful for that but I just want to have some feeling back now. My chin and lip are swollen feeling and the numbness has made eating drinking and taking medication a lot more difficult.
How long did it take to go away?

I began to freak out today after I got a couple fillings and noticed I couldn't purse my lips tightly enough to hold my cheeks inflated. As I began to search for reasons this might be happening, the feeling began to fully return and my normal muscle control came back too. Glad It was nothing to be alarmed at, but this has never happened to me that I can recall so it was a bit scary to think I'd lost the ability to make kissy. lol 💋

I've spent a lot of time in dental chairs and have become pretty much able to take any and all pain involved, but the very WORST part of the dental experience for me is without a doubt, the unscratchable facial itches and tickles that occur as the Novocaine wears off. It has plagued me for years. However, when I got home from a root canal last week, I found the silver bullet! Stand at the bathroom sink and splash water as hot as you can stand on the affected area. INSTANT and complete relief! Try it the next time you have this.
I'm 12 hours in and I still have extended numbness. My bottom right lip and that area i can't feel anything. My tongue and chin was numb but feeling came back 100%. Have slight numbness in the lower left side as well but not as bad as the right. Random tingling. I went under IV sedation. I'm so sad 😭

i came back from the dentist about an hour and a half ago and ever since they injected the anaesthetic into my upper left gum, i haven't been able to move the left side of my upper lip or nose?
I had a deep cleaning yesterday and they numbed me everything pretty much wore off but my top lip still feel a little numb is this normal?

If you got one side numb. Try eating ice cream, or anything soft so your tooth doesn’t start to hurt and feel pressure.

PLEASE HELP ME. I have undergone an odontectomy 48. It has been a week and 3 days since the surgery and still, I can barely feel my lower right lips and teeth. Yet it the point of numbness is getting better and small, it is still alarming that the anasthesia does not fade off completely after the surgery.

Gonna give everyone an update because I know I was freaking the fuuuuuuuuck out after the 14th hour mark. I still don't have 100% feeling back its prob like 85% back but each day after 1 week it's getting better. Mainly the reasoning you prob dont feel shit is because you still have infection around the gums, or tongue area my dentist put me on antibiotics and has helped so much. Ask for that shit if after a week you're not around 80-85% feeling back!
Been 2 months Still don't have 100% feeling back but this is prob because I got lazy and didn't finish my antibiotics. I am prob around 90% now but I've grown into living with it so yeah... lol

It's been 4 hours for me, my face doesn't just feel numb but also sort of paralyzed in some places and feels weird to swollow or talk. I had a crown put on my top left molar and I feel this weird feeling in my left cheek, and the paralyzed feeling in my lips like I can't close them properly. In the mirror the left side is not moving as much as normal. Praying this goes away ASAP. 😣 Scary. 😥😢
Update: I had painful twinges of pain that lasted around 2 weeks after that. But I am doing ok now, it just took a while to get better. Good luck to anyone going through a similar thing.

@@Sarah_2094 Eeek, sorry to hear that! For me it was around 2 weeks before back to normal. In my case I think that the dentist hit a nerve and/or used too much of the numbing medicine, and perhaps put it in too fast... Those are just guesses based off things I have read, but I am not a medical expert. Dealing with it was very scary for me, so after this incident and one other issue with the dentist I had been going to, I decided not to use him anymore as I was too scared of having that happen again. If you feel like the numbness and paralysis is really bad you might want to call the office and let them know and see if they have any advice for you. I hope you are ok and will feel better soon.

I took a nap afterward and by the time I woke up it was back to good. Because anything put in my mouth came out the other side of my mouth. Naps are great for passing the time.

i ate 3 slices of pepperoni pizza as soon as i got home i was still numb only problem was it felt weird chewing with out feeling it and i had a lot of food up in between my cheeks and teeth but i did not know it at first so make sure to reach with your tongue every were to make sure you got it all other then that i had no problem eating i have to go back Friday but i think i will wait to eat this time only because it took all the fun and flavor out of eating pizza

For me, since i had to get a silver tooth pulled out, it took 7hrs for the numbness to go away. I was completely fine, all i did was watch TV, and drink a milkshake. Luckily i only got one side numb so i could still sort of eat.

Yesterday I got surgery and part of my lip was still numb for 12 hours I was still able to eat though it was just harder than normal and my lip grew on that piece

@@kafarlifis Hi Karla, I would love to say good news but the numbness is still here. It didn't fade, it's still here. Sometimes I don't feel it much, then sometimes it's too uncomfortable.
@@kafarlifis I wish you well. The numbness subsided when I took Vitamin B Complex as the doctors said that it's good for the nerves. It's not painful at all, it just feels kind of uncomfortable sometimes especially in cold season or when I drink anything cold haha
