If you cant feel half your tongue or taste food properly immediately after wisdom teeth removal, your lingual nerve may have been irritated or damaged.
Half my tongue went numb (with an additional burning sensation) after an ID block anaesthetic injection for a deep filling. This happened on 18 August 2023. After a lot of research, I realised it was going to take a long time for the lingual nerve damage to fully heal. The first three months were difficult because I'd struggle to speak and the burning sensation would increase whenever I ate/drank. I started taking B12 vitamins as I'd read online that this is a good supplement to assist in nerve repair. Ironically, I noticed that the burning sensation and tightness in my tongue would reduce when I spoke for long periods of time, so I made an effort to keep exercising my tongue inside my mouth even if I wasn't speaking. I also prayed a LOT and asked God for healing. It's now January 18th 2024, exactly 5 months after the damage was done. I'm happy to say that the burning sensation went away after 3 months, and so far I'm about 80% healed. I hope this helps anyone who is experiencing this. It's a horrible injury, but with faith, trust and patience...it's possible to make a good recovery. God bless.

I think I'll be fully healed in about one more month...it's a well known fact that nerve damage takes a long time to heal (typically 6 months to a year). I pray you'll be fine. God bless.
@@gabe2518 Hi Gabe, yes I did. I referred to it as a "burning" sensation. But yes, it felt like uncomfortable tingles and little zaps, like electricity. I took this to be a good sign....it shows that your nerves are still working. This lasted for about 2.5 months. Every now and again it would stop....momentarily....then it would stop for longer periods like an hour or two....until it stopped completely. I didn't have any issues with my throat.
** RECOVERY STORY** hey guys i had this happen to me in January & figured id share my recovery process. -week 1: i had no sensation at all in my tongue -week 2: i suddenly regained sensation in the right half of my tongue, left half completely numb & had a prickling sensation -month 3: after 3 months of complete numbnesss w/ prickling sensation + stiffness, the left half suddenly regains mild sensation. it felt like a surge of energy, and i could finally feel objects pressed against the left half of my tongue -month 7: prickling sensation + stiffness in left half of tongue has completely subsided. full sensation in entirety of tongue. back to business as usual. this was one of the scariest things i have ever experience in my life, but i hope writing this alleviates some anxiety for someone who has just entered this recovery process. the numbness becomes normal after a while, so even if you arent as fortunate as i am with your recovery, it will get better. its a long road but you will see slow + consistent progress along the way.

I can feel tingling on the right side of my face. The tingling sensation started near the ear, spreading to lower jaw, lips, and the tongue. In three weeks, it has travelled to the upper half of the jaw and lips, now affecting the nose and eyes. I can feel my face but have issues with balance with some dizziness. CBCT shows that the wisdom tooth is pressing on the alveolar nerve. I have no pain in the vicinity of wisdom teeth but not sure whether to go for removal or wait for sensation to get normal?
My right side nerve was damaged over 20 years ago from wisdom tooth extraction. Started out numb for a few years then tingling in tongue later on. Slight sensation in gums, but not much. Flossing that lower sucks because it seems very sensitive even though it is slightly numb. I can feel cold things put on tongue. Tingling on it is annoying. Pain from infected molar root on lower right is excruciating!!! Or any infected tooth on that side. Sorry all, but if over a couple months and no change, it probably won’t be 100% again.

Don’t worry guys, i got my wisdom teeth (all 4) pulled yesterday, and at first I couldn’t feel my bottom lip, chin and left side of my tongue. I tried to eat vanilla yogurt, and when I did, the left side of my tongue couldn’t taste it and on top of that it registered the cold food as hot. It was SO WEIRD and it freaked me out. However, it’s the next day, I can feel my lips and chin again but the tongue still feels a little off but is much better. Give it time guys, it should heal up!

I’m on the same boat. A periodontist removed my lower left mandibular wisdom tooth. It’s been two weeks and even after taking steroids and b12 there’s no improvement to the sensation or ability to taste on the left side of my tongue and same side of gums. I’m so scared and can’t help but panic. So reading comments of people recovering gives me hope 😢
Hey guys - this July will be a year and I have recovered some but not all. I still don’t have taste buds on that side but a microneurosurgeon I saw told me those could come back with time. I do feel hot and cold now but that area is way more sensitive. I still feel the numbness but the biting of my tongue is less. I thought about suing but attorneys don’t like to take these cases unless you do a lingual nerve exploratory surgery where they open you to look at the nerve but it’s very delicate and you basically go from feeling 50% to 0% with the chance of possibly recovering if they can fix the issue or prove the damage or not recover at all anymore. A chance I wish to not take. For now I’m trying to learn how to live with this bs.

I got my mandibular wisdom teeth pulled two weeks ago. I now still have EXTREME pain in my tongue. I cannot eat solid foods, only liquids, talk normally, cry, get mad, without it feeling like something sharp is being stuck into my tongue. They have my coming in for laser treatment once a week. Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I'm so sorry. It happens to so many of us they just don't report it. You have got to write a letter to the medical board and the board of dentistry and your insurance. Write letters to all of them they have to know this is happening so that the quit doing it. It happened to me. Dentists, stop pushing this surgery on people. There was nothing wrong with my teeth, but every six months i was told to extract them. i finally got around to it and they maimed me.

Please for everybody that has had this damage write a letter to the medical board, write a letter to the board of dentistry, and write a letter to your insurance. It keeps happening to everybody in this country because nobody is brave enough to write a letter. They don't want to tell on their dentists. But I promise you they're not going to tell on themselves. They do not do not do not want this to be known as much as it is. Our country has got to stop this shit.
I don’t know which country you’re from but I agree. I wish something was done to prevent this sort of thing. A solution which people don’t have spend loads of money to get treatment. I’m also in a similar situation as you but I lost sensation around my chin.
Yep, I had 0 clue this was a possibility. If I would have known I wouldn't have gotten all 4 teeth unecessarily removed. Only the one that was bothering me. My tongue and lower inside mouth has been numb for two months now with no end in sight :(
This is a known complication of extractions. It can happen with the novice and with the most experienced surgeon. Good luck winning this in court when you signed a consent acknowledging these risks…
I have a question, My case seems similar but slightly different. I had all four wisdom teeth removed 5 1/2 days ago. I had no pain after removal, and numbness went away around day 3-4. Despite not being numb though, my sense of taste is VERY weak right now. It takes seconds for me to taste food that's in my mouth. I can't tell if it's limited to only part of my tongue or the whole thing. Given that there is no numbness do you think that makes it more likely for my taste to return? It's very frustrating, I already have Crohn's disease and have been on an extremely limiting diet for 5 years, so this just makes eating that much less enjoyable :/
@@northtexasdentalsurgery yeah, no numbness, but the loss of taste wasn't placebo. It wasn't mentioned explicitly as an effect beforehand (though I'm sure it was in the waiver I signed), and I didn't know it was possible before I noticed it. My tongue isn't numb but my taste was still weakened. It's been a few days now and I've noticed it slowly returning, so thankfully I'm not too worried anymore. Seems strange though based on your explanation and everyone else's experiences

Welp it happened, just had my right lower wisdom tooth removed and I’m in tremendous pain. I’m four days out and I still can’t feel or taste anything on the right side of my tongue , it’s numb and I’m scared it’s going to be like this for life.

I said no way am I doing that and risk further complications. The doctor had the nerve to say some people can live with it and some people can’t. This feeling is nothing I can get used to, only tasting on half of my mouth……smh I want to sue the shit out of this doctor but they make you sign a waiver before the procedure and mouth numbness is one of the risks listed. Can you still sue a doctor if you’ve signed a waiver? If I’m going to have a numb mouth for the rest of my life then I might as well get a bag$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$out of it🤷🏽♂️

Half of my tongue has been numb for almost 5 months since wisdom teeth removal and I feel so hopeless trying to get anyone to examine it. I refuse to go back to the one who did my surgery because he's absolutely unprofessional.
Got three removed today and that was around 1130 this morning. It is 820 pm as I type this comment. I just want my bottom lip to not be numb anymore. Also, it is very dry despite lip balm. The right side of my tongue is still extremely numb and feels funny. I can't taste on that side of my mouth. I also have some pain in the lower portion of the left side of my face around my lower jawbone. It isn't an unbearable pain but it is a bit annoying and I can't open my mouth fully without the pain increasing a bit. Also, swallowing hurts that same area. Swallowing food or water is a challenge for me as well. I've nearly choked on some water a couple of times already (very small amounts at a time) and some chicken noodle soup broth too (again, very small amounts at a time). By all means, I am avoiding chewing because it is still day 1 and also I really don't want to bit my tongue as I won't feel it on that right side. Still seeing a fair amount of blood but that's expected. Really, the most aggravating thing to me is my lip is super numb (I can talk fairly well) and the right half of my tongue has no feeling so, eating is proving difficult. But by no means am I in any extreme pain. Discomfort is a more accurate term. I'm curious about how long this may last.
@@noemiibarra9797 I did end up getting better. The numbness in my tongue lasted three or four days. Most of my face regained feeling a couple of days after my wisdom teeth were pulled. The lower left part of my face along my jawline was numb for almost three months after the removal though. I was able to eat soft foods without choking about two days after the wisdom teeth removal. And the pain in my face when opening my mouth stopped probably around the same time as the feeling came back. I think the dentist that performed my operation probably hit a nerve when removing one of my wisdom teeth. It was a slow process and required a lot of patience as far as food goes. I had a very hard time consuming anything other than soup broth for about three days immediately after the operation. Hopefully this helps.

@@404moneyboyzent nah, I didn't take any kind of pain meds for mine that I can remember. I was just trying to stay hydrated and not chew my jaws and tongue to shreds. Soups and soft food were what I stuck with until I regained feeling. Thankfully it was only a few days and not longer. For me, it was just trying to be patient until I could eat solid food again.

I took my impaction wisdom tooth took through oral surgery and it took 7 stitches and it was deeply stuck in my jawline bone .. He too recommended a nuro medics but its so hard to adjust

sounds like you have local anesthesia induced paresthesia. very very rare. it is pretty late right now but you can always try a medrol dose pack. tell your dentist.

Rule of thumb is that if it doesn't come back in about 4-6 weeks it could be permanent. But I did look into it and there is laser nerve reconstruction surgeries available there for just that type of problem.

A place called River Ridge, I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once, no stitches. All they gave me was basic tylenol and antibiotics. for 3 weeks I was in horrific pain before it finally subsided and was left with half a functioning tongue. i though it was just normal numbness but here I am today with 0% improvement three months later. I went there expecting a professional job to be done like they told me, but now I regret ever going to that place.
I asked my orthodontist and a couple others and they think it's going to be permanent, I can't taste salt, i have no perception of heat or cold, I'm starting to lose motor control and a severe pain is flaring up directly and only in the center of my tongue with the slightest movement. It is hard to swallow and I cannot pronounce words like I used to. It has altered my ability to sleep and I've been getting more headaches than usual. In your opinion, should I give it more time to see if it gets better or worse or should I be looking into hiring a lawyer?
I'll be definently doing so, dental care in America is f****d up. All they have been doing is sending me through a f*****g loop, now I'm broke, then they do this and now I'm more f****d because I have to pay for treatment for a disability that could have easily been avoided if the surgeon wasn't a regurgitated cum bubble in a dead hobos ass.

Ok my question is if I have a bad wisdom teeth (black color with cavity), but if it is not causing pain is it really necessary to take that risk and remove it?
The cavity is gonna move towards the tooth next to it and spread it thru out. Which could cause you to lose your others. Find a good dentist/oral and get it removed.
Don’t do it!!!! It’s not worth the pain agony and potential damage to nerves. I was going to get all four removed but I’m glad I didn’t cause my whole mouth would probably be nerve damaged. @@mikegutierrez6227 If the nerve is slightly injured, it might take a few weeks or months to repair itself. If it's heavily injured, it might take a year. If it's completely severed, it's permanent. There isn't much you can do, but there are surgeries that can try to repair the nerve ... you can look up surgeries to repair the inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerves
For everybody experiencing this. Cocaine is the only thing helping me get my nerves firing and tongue back. I’m about 87% back due to cocaine use at night.
Cocaine has helped. I am almost recovered fully after weeks of numbness due to controlled amounts of cocaine. The pain is gone but slightly numbness. Cocaine helps get the nerves fireing (at least for me ) It’s been the only thing to Works.
Got my 2 bottom wisdom removed and left side developed an abscess that turned to sepsis and I almost died. 2 surgery’s in 5 days. Felt like a thunder storm goin across my tongue for long time. Steroids didn’t work. And nothing helped. Tried a line of cocaine and was in heaven. Now I’m making a recovery after 3 weeks of full tongue numbness now down to about 90% recovery. Still can’t open my mouth fully on left side hurts in my jaw and stings my left side of tongue when force open. But the cocaine feels amazing . Don’t buy on the streets get from the Latinos or trusted source. For full effect place porcelain plate on hot stove and break cocaine over it using receipt And card . I can feel tingling on the right side of my face. The tingling sensation started near the ear, spreading to lower jaw, lips, and the tongue. In three weeks, it has travelled to the upper half of the jaw and lips, now affecting the nose and eyes. I can feel my face but have issues with balance with some dizziness.
CBCT shows that the wisdom tooth is pressing on the alveolar nerve. I have no pain in the vicinity of wisdom teeth but not sure whether to go for removal or wait for sensation to get normal?

My right side nerve was damaged over 20 years ago from wisdom tooth extraction. Started out numb for a few years then tingling in tongue later on. Slight sensation in gums, but not much. Flossing that lower sucks because it seems very sensitive even though it is slightly numb. I can feel cold things put on tongue. Tingling on it is annoying. Pain from infected molar root on lower right is excruciating!!! Or any infected tooth on that side. Sorry all, but if over a couple months and no change, it probably won’t be 100% again.

Don’t worry guys, i got my wisdom teeth (all 4) pulled yesterday, and at first I couldn’t feel my bottom lip, chin and left side of my tongue. I tried to eat vanilla yogurt, and when I did, the left side of my tongue couldn’t taste it and on top of that it registered the cold food as hot. It was SO WEIRD and it freaked me out. However, it’s the next day, I can feel my lips and chin again but the tongue still feels a little off but is much better. Give it time guys, it should heal up!

I’m on the same boat. A periodontist removed my lower left mandibular wisdom tooth. It’s been two weeks and even after taking steroids and b12 there’s no improvement to the sensation or ability to taste on the left side of my tongue and same side of gums. I’m so scared and can’t help but panic. So reading comments of people recovering gives me hope 😢

Hey guys - this July will be a year and I have recovered some but not all. I still don’t have taste buds on that side but a microneurosurgeon I saw told me those could come back with time. I do feel hot and cold now but that area is way more sensitive. I still feel the numbness but the biting of my tongue is less. I thought about suing but attorneys don’t like to take these cases unless you do a lingual nerve exploratory surgery where they open you to look at the nerve but it’s very delicate and you basically go from feeling 50% to 0% with the chance of possibly recovering if they can fix the issue or prove the damage or not recover at all anymore. A chance I wish to not take. For now I’m trying to learn how to live with this bs.

I got my mandibular wisdom teeth pulled two weeks ago. I now still have EXTREME pain in my tongue. I cannot eat solid foods, only liquids, talk normally, cry, get mad, without it feeling like something sharp is being stuck into my tongue. They have my coming in for laser treatment once a week. But I feel like it's only getting worse.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I'm so sorry. It happens to so many of us they just don't report it. You have got to write a letter to the medical board and the board of dentistry and your insurance. Write letters to all of them they have to know this is happening so that the quit doing it. It mostly happens in usa
It happened to me. Dentists, stop pushing this surgery on people. There was nothing wrong with my teeth, but every six months i was told to extract them. i finally got around to it and they maimed me.
Also no warning about risk factor in consultation. How am i supposed to make an informed decision if no one mentions the risk to lingual nerve?

Please for everybody that has had this damage write a letter to the medical board, write a letter to the board of dentistry, and write a letter to your insurance. It keeps happening to everybody in this country because nobody is brave enough to write a letter. They don't want to tell on their dentists. But I promise you they're not going to tell on themselves.
They are completely protected and we can't even sue to get the money to pay for exploratory surgery for possible nerve damage repair

No we have not all heard about it. I'd never heard about it in my life until after that jerk ripped up my wisdom teeth and now I have permanent damage. My nerve damage goes all the way down my vocal chords and into my left lung The structure of the left side of my face is aging faster and I'm losing my hearing in my left ear. I used to love to sing. My voice hasn't been the same and it's been 3 years. Not to mention the excruciating pain I'm and randomly and will be for the rest of my life. I don’t know which country you’re from but I agree. I wish something was done to prevent this sort of thing. A solution which people don’t have spend loads of money to get treatment. I’m also in a similar situation as you but I lost sensation around my chin.
Yep, I had 0 clue this was a possibility. If I would have known I wouldn't have gotten all 4 teeth unecessarily removed. Only the one that was bothering me. My tongue and lower inside mouth has been numb for two months now with no end in sight :(

This is a known complication of extractions. It can happen with the novice and with the most experienced surgeon. Good luck winning this in court when you signed a consent acknowledging these risks…
I have a question, My case seems similar but slightly different. I had all four wisdom teeth removed 5 1/2 days ago. I had no pain after removal, and numbness went away around day 3-4. Despite not being numb though, my sense of taste is VERY weak right now. It takes seconds for me to taste food that's in my mouth. I can't tell if it's limited to only part of my tongue or the whole thing. Given that there is no numbness do you think that makes it more likely for my taste to return? It's very frustrating, I already have Crohn's disease and have been on an extremely limiting diet for 5 years, so this just makes eating that much less enjoyable :/

It wasn't mentioned explicitly as an effect beforehand (though I'm sure it was in the waiver I signed), and I didn't know it was possible before I noticed it. My tongue isn't numb but my taste was still weakened. It's been a few days now and I've noticed it slowly returning, so thankfully I'm not too worried anymore. Seems strange though based on your explanation and everyone else's experiences

Welp it happened, just had my right lower wisdom tooth removed and I’m in tremendous pain. I’m four days out and I still can’t feel or taste anything on the right side of my tongue , it’s numb and I’m scared it’s going to be like this for life.

I said no way am I doing that and risk further complications. The doctor had the nerve to say some people can live with it and some people can’t. This feeling is nothing I can get used to, only tasting on half of my mouth……smh
I want to sue the shit out of this doctor but they make you sign a waiver before the procedure and mouth numbness is one of the risks listed. Can you still sue a doctor if you’ve signed a waiver? Half of my tongue has been numb for almost 5 months since wisdom teeth removal and I feel so hopeless trying to get anyone to examine it. I refuse to go back to the one who did my surgery because he's absolutely unprofessional.

Got three removed today and that was around 1130 this morning. It is 820 pm as I type this comment.
I just want my bottom lip to not be numb anymore. Also, it is very dry despite lip balm.
The right side of my tongue is still extremely numb and feels funny. I can't taste on that side of my mouth. I also have some pain in the lower portion of the left side of my face around my lower jawbone. It isn't an unbearable pain but it is a bit annoying and I can't open my mouth fully without the pain increasing a bit. Also, swallowing hurts that same area. Swallowing food or water is a challenge for me as well. I've nearly choked on some water a couple of times already (very small amounts at a time) and some chicken noodle soup broth too (again, very small amounts at a time).
By all means, I am avoiding chewing because it is still day 1 and also I really don't want to bit my tongue as I won't feel it on that right side. Still seeing a fair amount of blood but that's expected.
Really, the most aggravating thing to me is my lip is super numb (I can talk fairly well) and the right half of my tongue has no feeling so, eating is proving difficult.
But by no means am I in any extreme pain. Discomfort is a more accurate term.
I'm curious about how long this may last.

@@noemiibarra9797 I did end up getting better. The numbness in my tongue lasted three or four days. Most of my face regained feeling a couple of days after my wisdom teeth were pulled.
The lower left part of my face along my jawline was numb for almost three months after the removal though.
I was able to eat soft foods without choking about two days after the wisdom teeth removal.
And the pain in my face when opening my mouth stopped probably around the same time as the feeling came back.
I think the dentist that performed my operation probably hit a nerve when removing one of my wisdom teeth.
It was a slow process and required a lot of patience as far as food goes. I had a very hard time consuming anything other than soup broth for about three days immediately after the operation.

I was just trying to stay hydrated and not chew my jaws and tongue to shreds.
Soups and soft food were what I stuck with until I regained feeling. Thankfully it was only a few days and not longer.
For me, it was just trying to be patient until I could eat solid food again.

I took my impaction wisdom tooth took through oral surgery and it took 7 stitches and it was deeply stuck in my jawline bone .. He too recommended a nuro medics but its so hard to adjust

sounds like you have local anesthesia induced paresthesia. very very rare. it is pretty late right now but you can always try a medrol dose pack. tell your dentist.

Rule of thumb is that if it doesn't come back in about 4-6 weeks it could be permanent. But I did look into it and there is laser nerve reconstruction surgeries available there for just that type of problem.

A place called River Ridge, I had 4 wisdom teeth taken out at once, no stitches. All they gave me was basic tylenol and antibiotics. for 3 weeks I was in horrific pain before it finally subsided and was left with half a functioning tongue. i though it was just normal numbness but here I am today with 0% improvement three months later. I went there expecting a professional job to be done like they told me, but now I regret ever going to that place.
I asked my orthodontist and a couple others and they think it's going to be permanent, I can't taste salt, i have no perception of heat or cold, I'm starting to lose motor control and a severe pain is flaring up directly and only in the center of my tongue with the slightest movement. It is hard to swallow and I cannot pronounce words like I used to. It has altered my ability to sleep and I've been getting more headaches than usual. In your opinion, should I give it more time to see if it gets better or worse or should I be looking into hiring a lawyer?

Treat the cavity, take antibiotics. Removal should be last resort only.

I got my wisdom teeth removed a month ago, I still can’t taste on the left side of my tongue and there is some numbness but not much, I can somewhat feel texture. Will I ever go back to normal??
Is it back to normal for you? I got my a couple wisdom teeth removed 4 days ago, and I also have some numbness on my tongue's left side. It can't really taste or feel temperature of food, but I can feel texture. I'm hoping it will go back to normal since it's not completely without any feeling!
@@mannotwiththeplan sadly no!! I still can’t taste on my left side, though I do feel the tingly sensation from mint or spicy stuff and some texture, but no taste! It’s month #2 and honestly I’m losing hope but I’m also getting used to it :/
@@nikimj1 Don't give up yet! I hear it could take 6 months to recover, but if it's been a year then it might be permanent. You already talk to your doctor about it?

@@mikegutierrez6227 If the nerve is slightly injured, it might take a few weeks or months to repair itself. If it's heavily injured, it might take a year. If it's completely severed, it's permanent. There isn't much you can do, but there are surgeries that can try to repair the nerve ... you can look up surgeries to repair the inferior alveolar nerve and lingual nerves

I don’t think so. A month later and the right side of my tongue and mouth is still numb.

For everybody experiencing this.
Cocaine is the only thing helping me get my nerves firing and tongue back. I’m about 87% back due to cocaine use at night.

Cocaine has helped. I am almost recovered fully after weeks of numbness due to controlled amounts of cocaine.
