  • This is our first video of two about the Danish architect and furniture designer Børge Mogensen. As a classmate of Hans J Wegner and student of Kaare Klint he was already at a young age highly involved in the Danish design scene. His functional and robust furniture made for the broad masses earned him the nickname “the people’s designer.”

J39 is a masterpiece by modern standards. It is already considered timeless and will only go up in price.

I wish his furniture still had fair prices! The dining bench is beautiful and sensible and no one has copied it.

Yeah, sadly they're expensive nowadays. Agree with you, the bench is magnificent. Simple, functional and beautiful.

It's amazing that I have never heard this man. However I used to work in a restaurant that had chairs and tables that looked like a slight variation of these designs. They really were strong enough to be moved around often. They also were strong enough to be handled by wild children.

Hehe, yeah, that's the good thing with robust furniture. Its almost impossible to destroy a dining table by Mogensen. We have one in our kitchen and it can probably be used as a working bench.

It has been interesting to hear your perspective on the influence of American furniture in Scandinavian design. My kitchen chairs look like one of the Borge Mogensen chairs you showed. They have an obvious connection to American Windsor chairs but with a contemporary feel. Mine were made in Malaysia.

There's indeed a close connection between American (well, originally Brittish) Windsor chairs and modern Scandinavian chairs made by designers like Mogensen and Ekström.

Imagine being one of the few people in the world buried in Børge Mogensen coffins. Haha!
