I feel like an xcom style of game would suit stargate,
Small teams that you could make yourself, take them on missions and grow attached to and then when they die it really affects you.
Have different classes like scientist, soldier, jaffa etc. And face threats like goa'uld, replicators, wraiths etc.

i personally think that Mass Effect set the perfect gameplay for a Stargate Game.

As I said in another thread, Xcom the Bureau had a very similar concept, you had a base where you were between operations, and you had Mass Effect style squad based combat. It was less polished overall, but it was a solid game. If not for the extremely questionable plot twist at the last act, and the burden of being an Xcom game, I think it could have been a hit.

I've felt for years now that someone high up in MGM really hated Stargate for some reason. The IP as a whole that is. Anytime something was greenlit that the fans truly got excited for, it ended up getting canned. And then they would greenlight something half-assed instead as if they needed to make something. And when response was underwhelming, this figure could point to the low numbers as reason why they should just leave the IP dead.
Stargate is ripe for so many potential gameplay genres. Past, present and future times. Hundreds or thousands of worlds. Multiple galaxies. From the SG Teams to the Fleet to the enemy factions and those that make up those forces. Base building as you grow a civ just barely able to decipher the gate. Doesn't need to be set on Earth, in fact the civ discovering us and the Goa'uld could be a sign you've hit the higher levels as you're now playing with the big boys.
It's such a brilliant universe with countless ways someone could develop it out. Even a shameless tie in skin over an existing game might be better than what we've been denied so far. Stardew Valley clone where you are a farmer keeping the Alpha Site from collapsing as it's cut off from Earth for a while thanks to yet more SG-1 shenanigans. Each level of difficulty increase comes as more and more allies show up and the needs of the site grow and tensions rise if the supply needs aren't met. That's a two second idea from the top of my head that avoids the CoD in Space styling that is just so obvious for a premise.
I am a bit disappointed you didn't mention Stargate Network. Though the Powers That Be finally shut them down, that was a mighty impressive effort from the fandom. Filling that need we all have for more Stargate while the owners sat on their hands and did nothing with the IP we so love. It's so frustrating to be a fan right now, knowing Amazon holds the rights and has the cash (that they love to throw at established IPs) but not hearing anything. I know the strikes will be preventing them from really getting any traction right now, but that lot deserve their pay. It's the writers that fleshed out this universe we so crave to play in before the actors brought it to life.
But still... how hard can it truly be for those in power to actually deliver a half-decent game. Timekeepers doesn't really spark joy to see the gameplay footage, but at this point, I'll take a released Stargate game I may not be super psyched to play over nothing. Probably even gonna buy it, just to show the bean counters that we fans want more Stargate. And especially want some damn games.

    • @5226-p1e
      @5226-p1e 11 месяцев назад +3

i agree with most of your points, but i can't support this style of game, the IP owners always seem to choose the dumbest route, actually i'm pretty sure they choose the cheapest route to make a game, and that's why it always leads nowhere.
if it releases, most fans won't support it because they don't like 2d side scrollers, they might get it but at a significantly reduced cost and most probably won't really play it that much because they don't like it, and we tried to warn them before they continued on this path.
i feel like the IP owners before they make any decision when making a game, they really need to ask the community of fans first before they made some dumbass decision, these days it feels like most IP owners need to ask their community what they want the most and then pay attention to what people talk about the most and then go on the search to find a game dev to make the game the fans actually want.
because otherwise it's just guess work and or they will choose the cheapest game dev that can't even deliver on games in general, it also feels like they need an expert in gaming so they know what devs to pitch their game to, because without that knowledge, they are going in blind and could easily run into a dev who will waste their time and money and at the end of the day the game is essentially Shovelware which everyone ignores or the devs are incompetent to get the job done, like i don't fully understand the reasons why stargate alliance didn't work out still to this day, they say some legal situation took place but i don't know what relation this situation took place as and why the game had to be scrapped...it was very vague information.

    • @tyrannicpuppy
      @tyrannicpuppy 11 месяцев назад +1

@@5226-p1e I agree. I don't seriously want them to half ass anything. I want a proper Stargate game that is a labour of love for it's dev team. Who actually want to make it, they aren't just cashing in a payday from Amazon.
As long as we finally get some freaking good Stargate games. I only mean that the universe is the limit with Stargate. Any number of different options exist from the stupid farming sim or management game to the FPS to the RPG, etc...
It's not a lack of potential. It's a lack of support from those who hold the IP. Or worse, active suppression by them. See Stargate Network. They could have just bought it out and found a developer to polish it to a publishable state. or even those already making it. Just pay them. They're fans so excited about your product they've put years of their free time into making something wonderful.
Instead they just quietly send out cease and desists. It's so frustrating to be a fan when this is how the people in charge treat our source of entertainment.

A Mass Effect style cinematic story driven RPG would be perfect for lore expansion based on the existing lore and mythology! some fan games you missed:
Stargate had a massive mod for Garrys mod that was one of the most popular mods in the games history, created by mod maker aVoN. You can still download depracted mod packs that overhauled the original mod on the workshop.
There was also Stargate TC2, which was an objective based source game where you would start at one end of a map, push forward to each objective, and the finale usually ended with you dialing the gate to invade the enemy defenders spawn. This game had a really cool feature where you could either memorize the address for that map to dial quickly, or use the super slow auto dial mechanic. This acted much like the bomb mechanic in counter strike, so the slower it was the more likleky the enemy would kill you and stop the dialing.
The best, most well rounded game that came out was Stargate: The Last Stand, which had multiple maps which followed a similar objectives based gameplay loop like tc2. It looked fantastic for when it came out and had a pretty active playerbase for a while.

The game has had a comprehensive group of Halo, 40K, and Star Wars conversion mods but only a handful of SG-1 voice and cosmetic mods (and mostly just things like tattoos and icons). It seems like such a great fit too with the whole "going from the base on missions against a more powerful foe in an effort to find weapons/allies to help defeat them" theme.

There's a pretty well-made Stargate addon for Garry's Mod out there called Carter's Addon Pack. It hasn't been worked on in years, but last I checked all of the important stuff still worked. The addon made the gates as accurate to the show as it could, and the other stuff like the ring transporters, weapons, and a handful of the smaller ships were nice as well. Unfortunately Gmod doesn't really lend itself well for using all that stuff as anything other than toys in a sandbox, so you kinda have to make your own fun with it. While there hasn't been many Stargate games, there has been a ton of content in games inspired by it. You have the portals in No Man's Sky which are basically stargates. But one little known one is in Everquest. In the Temple of Sshra in the Shadows of Luclin expansion there is a snake-like race called the Shissar whose temple is a pyramid on one of the game world's moons. They were very much inspired by the Goauld from Stargate, enslaving other races. Inside their temple you traverse floors by using these ringed contraptions that look identical to ring transporters though instead of teleporting you, you 'swim' up and down them. There is even a stargate looking portal where the last boss is in said temple.

Most to my knowledge don't add more than the stargates themselves that act as teleporters to other stargates, although they work between dimensions so adding any mod that adds more dimensions works well with them. The one I'm familiar with has compatibility with two of the most popular mods that add DOS based computers to Minecraft, ComputerCraft and Opencomputers. Both rely on the user knowing LUA scripting to write their own programs tho so they aren't that user friendly way of using the stargates.

I liked tv shows as well - SG-1, Atlantis, Universe (less so), but the original movie is an example of such a fine craftmanship at every aspect that it just cannot be beaten.

This gave me the idea for an extraction shooter, in the vein of the Payday series. You and some number of other players (3?) set up as the exploration squad. You select from a number of characters each with different specializations. You enter into either a randomly generated zone, or a pregen zone depending on gameplay loop. The goal is to retrieve a MacGuffin, depending on the level or enemy faction in the zone, you can attempt to do it diplomatically. The diplomacy section would be a sort of puzzle game. Where you have to question NPCs, gain access to computer terminals, and attempt to negotiate terms for the item. I'm imagining something similar to Shadows of Doubt, where you have to keep track of information. If diplomacy breaks down then you attempt it as a shooter game. The different characters skills would be more focused on different sections of the game.
Of course some players would just opt for a run and gun style of play, forgoing diplomacy completely, and the game would have to allow for that.

It was just a reskin of one of the cheap browser games where you picked a faction and went with it...all of their factions in it was, essentially the exact same thing with different names despite being wildly different tech bases in universe (You had the SGC, Goa'uld, Replicators, Asgard, and a few others). Just a build forces, upgrade stuff, and take land while hoping not to lose all of your own along the way...

I lay 95% of the blame, for both the IP withering and no games being released, at the feet of MGM. Good riddance. The other 5% was the fault of whoever decided to make SGU a crappy ripoff of the BSG reboot because they saw how high the ratings for that show were. The failure of SGU was the nail in the coffin. I also blame the BSG reboot for all the sci-fi/fantasy series after that being some weird narrative arc thing that get lost in the Chris Carter effect (look it up) instead of episodic stories that challenge social, technological, and political issues of the day, as sci-fi is designed to do. Sci-fi became high-tech drama and ceased to be sci-fi. But I digress.
Where was I? Oh, right. Friggin MGM.

I was thinking about what a Stargate game could be like, and it could be made to be a MMO where you have factions you can choose from. The base game could came with three factions: Tau'ri, Jaffa and Goa'uld. Then they could launch a DLC with a new faction, perhaps the Lucian Alliance.
The factions would have a different gameplay depending on their background. For example, the Tau'ri would fight with Earth firearms and be restricted to the orders they get from SGC, and if they disobey those orders they could be demoted. The Goa'uld, on the other hand, would have no restrictions and would fight with their personal shields hand weapons and also a new type of minion. So each faction would have a different gameplay.
From there they could launch thematic DLCs, like a Pegasus Galaxy DLC with factions like the Atlantis Expedition, Wraith, Genii and Travelers. Later they could add the Replicators, perhaps.

There are a few styles that would make a good stargate game.
The easiest two in my opinion are:
-an x-com style game is perfect. You run cheyenne mountain, you bulid teams and send them through the gate; do research. Seems straight forward. Or you could base it in atlantis, or on the alpha site who lost contact with earth; or in a an alternate universe where you try to restore teh timeline.
-an RPG, I am thinking like the OG fallout or the harebrained scheme Shadowrun game. But you could go for a modern small team RPG like BG3. You lead SG-3 into some complicated story.
Other styles also can fit. The squad FPS can work. You could do a visual novel or a point and click where you uncover some ancient cultures.
And that's only if you play earth!
You could play a goa'ould system lord trying to conquer the galaxy. Or maybe you play one of ba'als 100 clones.
The potential is HUGE on the stargate franchise. I'm surprised we haven't seen anything come out!

There is currently a small indie game in early access on steam called Exogate that is pretty much an off brand stargate game. It's a base builder management sim that plays similar to Evil Genius but with the gameplay loop revolving around exploring the universe using the gate to gather resources, research new life, and make contact with new species while funding your program using patents made with your exo-biology research. The game is still relatively early on in development and it lacks any tactical combat but I think is shows a good demonstration of the potential a real Stargate game could have, and I think the concept itself lends well to the Xcom formula.

Forget running around the forest with a P90, I want a game that lets me run Stargate Command from my desk. Maybe some base expansion like XCOM, as a long-term side activity. The main focus would be sending out a MALP, scanning the environment, and then making the next move. Have a big button to close the iris, with consequences if you press it too late. When the remote vehicle finds an interesting world, it would be the player's job to select from SG-2 to SG-12, or very occasionally get SG-1 involved. Based on your initial impressions, it's important to select the right team and to give them supplemental equipment. You only see the far side of the wormhole through MALP cameras.

I'd want a game that shows (unlike the TV-Shows, which sadly didn't have the budget for that) how the military would have done it (fighting a war through the gate) - including NEVER to travel directly to Earth! But to stop-over-planets and from them to Forward-Operating-Bases (FOBs). The use of vehicles, more soldiers, more technology being acquired and directly used if need be etc...the FOBs having their own intelligence arm (so as to not depend on the Tok'Ra)...and stuff like firing missiles through the gate being SOP for a hostile breaching of a gate on an enemy planet etc.

There's an old browser based strategy game called Gate Wars I used to play, back in the day. It's still around, though I wouldn't recommend it these days. It was entirely text based, but you could select Tau'ri, Goa'uld, Replicator or Asgard and each race had a bonus. The gameplay centered around building your stats and alliances, and combat involved selecting an opponent and sending troops to attack them.
Not very inspired gameplay-wise, but we had a THRIVING game of political intrigue and some role-playing. Initially there was a lot of conflict as players built alliances based on race affiliation, but the really clever players began to develop multi-race alliances that would dominate their opposition. Subterfuge and espionage was the name of the game at the top levels, since groups like the Omega Empire (run by a System Lord, of course)could curb-stomp their opposition in a straight fight. And ultimately the system of alliances became so complex that if anyone really went to war it'd set off massive server-wide conflicts. So economic warfare and intelligence work was the more profitable way to undermine your enemies.
Eventually MGM got wind of it and there was some behind-the-scenes legal work, so some of the stuff got renamed and the game was rebranded from Stargate Wars to Gate Wars. It was actually impressive what the developer got away with ultimately. It even had a spinoff game based on Stargate: Atlantis, which was less popular but had just as fierce a community.

I have wondered the same thing... I can't imagine a better MMO setting to be honest...

the best Stargate game to date is the "Pegasus Chronicles" mod for Star Wars Empire at War. Space Combat is beautiful and you can encounter ALL the races. Like even if there was just one reference in pne episode it's probably in the game. Ground combat wasn't that developed in my memory, but playable.

There is a great mod for star wars empire at war. The number of game mods show how a stargate game would be welcomed

With the potential the StarEngine (CloudImperiumGames) offers, it would be absolutely the best way a proper StarGate Game could be made.
And then make it a Coop or even a truely Multiplayer based game.
With where StarEngine goes, MMO-RPG with Basebuilding and without loading-transitions seems much more possible these days.
