  • This Starling has been trained to mimic words and phrases about its invasive introduction to the North American continent. It has also picked up some inadvertent mimicry along the way.

    I'm always blown away by how mechanical these birds can sound when they mimic voices and especially sounds

    Dude it's mimicry is uncannily good, it's like the original voice but it sounds like coming from a cassette tape player

    A lot of birds are named after the sounds that they make, for instance, the Chickadee. I like to imagine that the European starling was named because that was the bird call they heard in the wild

      fun fact! the butcherbird (also known as loggerhead shrike), a predatory songbird, has a call that is theorized to do exactly this! its not mimicry but its been shown to attract other birds.

    I find it extremely fascinating that this type of bird can do this, but I also find it a little bit disturbing. It kind of sounds like a robot and at the same time unnatural with a very eerie disconnected sounding tone

    This is an amazing bird. I have seen them landing in my back yard for decades, never knowing they were capable of mimicking sounds.

    Starlings, like other birds who can perform mimicry, never cease to amaze me! I like what they taught this one to say. If I were to teach a bird to repeat a phrase, one would be, "Explain that to me again." I think it's worth a try. Then, invite people over and see what happens.

    These birds are declining quite rapidly. I sometimes see them on wires and on my fatball feeders but there isn’t enough as there should be

      He was a rescued baby who is unfortunately invasive in the area and couldn’t be returned to the wild, but he’s very cared for and isn’t in the cage all the time.
