#Rivian #Ford #Lightning
f150 for me, the fact that the aftermarket is massive for the regular f150 and can be installed on the lightning is huge. Rivian don't support right-to-repair either.
R1T is above nicer over F150 lightning on all chapters those 4 independent motors are super, yeah is shorter in bed size and might not have glove box but the space between the cabin and the bed is quite impressive were it can either have an optional stuff like a full cooking optional set for adventure, a shelf for different tools or just empty space for extra luggage.. ohh aftermarket can also have cool gears for Rivian, btw i did not see a spare wheel on the F150 and Rivian has it back in the bed under a lid and it can be taken out for even more extra space and in any case R1T has a integrated compressor in the back.. So, F150 more rugged as utility sizes, taller, wider, longer & larger but the annoying sound when the Ford door is open compared to cirip-of Rivian which sounds much nicer.. R1T would be so perfect for European market providing nicer interior +room for 5 on-road and off-road ability and enough space for adventure gears & stuff..
@@poplaurentiu4148 4:52 shows the F150 spare.
@@poplaurentiu4148 everything you just mentioned and more in the aftermarket space is also available for the F150. The aftermarket support is massive for this vehicle. The Rivian is nice, but it isn't a F150
@@chrisgill7824 well one thing is very good and very clear at least for me about comparisons between EV brands is super good not just to see each-other products tested in same condition in the real world but also since it let's clients to choose what they really want depending on they 'r needs : budget, quality, specs or whatever each customers want.. i watched plenty EV truck comparisons and other tests made so far with all available EV trucks but also Sandy Munro channel he worked at Ford and now he has it's own channel called Munro Associates and they test, dismantle and compare all vehicles made for last decades.. now for electric vehicles & pickup trucks they posted plenty clips explaining why Rivian is best so far taking into consideration all aspects from quality build, materials, inside-out functionality and utility and the way is build for each buck spent is reflected in the build quality.. Ford is very good for what it is in the utility segment but if you manage to test both when you get in Rivian you can tell instantly the quality difference specially inside the cabin performance it has, so i'm not bashing any competitors let''s not forget : Hummer EV (Truck & SUV), Chevy EV truck, Atlis, Stellantis, Tesla Cybertruck, Nikola Badger or other that will be available pretty soon each will have different advantages and other bad things.. So, again competition and variety is the best key factor because after comparison each customer from each market will have the chance to choose what they like based on the needs and budgets taking into consideration all the factors & comparison pro-tips..
F150 lightning for me too. I love the 9.6 kw on board power. I love that ford kept the F150 appearance. I love the lightning luxurious ride with uts independent suspension. My platinum seats are very comfortable along with the massaging seats.
I’d rather have the Ford Lightning, but they both look nice! I’m not paying those crazy prices tho…
I know, right? I am surprised by the number of people who can spend 80k on a pickup. I have a PRO lightning on order for 46k and I don't know whether to feel like I got the deal of the decade, or I'm nuts for spending that kind of money.
I feel bad paying over 40 for the Pro trim! Crazy so many spending 90k+ for an f-150 and smaller truck.
@@KLFaber i should be able to order in the next round. Place my reservation at 8am MST on 5/20.
I can’t decide like you if I should go with the Pro or the XLT with the 312A package for heated front seats. The difference is roughy $20k. I can definitely pay cash for the Pro and I would probably finance $20k for the XLT.
I’ve been driving beaters for the past 10+ years as I’ve been patiently waiting for and EV. I thought about treating myself but I may wait for the next vehicle.
I’d build the Pro around the same price as yours, what color did you go with?
@@wolfejar unless you are getting ext pack on pro, would bump up to the XLT large pack.
Yeah, when will these manufacturers learn not everyone wants to drop 80k for one these trucks. Honestly first company that either A makes these about 20k less and B makes a solid mid-size truck like a colorado or ranger thats under 40k will kill it in terms of sales.
Considering that EVs are just giant portable batteries, the ability to provide external power is a big deal. The electrical outlets on the Rivian are a major disappointment compared to the Ford. But as a Tesla owner, I am a bit jealous of either one: All Tesla provides is a couple of 12VDC outlets.
Agreed. Hopefully they make it to a v2 model where they can improve on the handful of things that aren't great here or the competitors do it better like the power outlets. I very much prefer the frunk design of the Ford and Hummer to having to reach up and over on the Rivian.
Raven gives you a flashlight Ford gives you the capability to run your entire house 😃
Gear tunnel >
Lol jk. Can't argue that ability from the Ford is pretty cool. Can't stand that stupid Tesla-style tablet in the center though. I much prefer the interior on the Rivian, personally.
@@RedWingsninetyone I like Rivian's screen as it is integrated into the design. Fords looks like they found something off the shelf that didn't' fit and just hot glued it on.
@@curtisbme that's a great way of putting it. That's exactly what bothers me about it. Plus the horizontal nature just makes it appear more natural.
I could be wrong, but in order to power your home, doesn’t your home have to be able to be off grid (disconnected from electric company)? Does anyone know how that really works?
@@eileenhunter5927 it wouldn't really be any different than having a backup generator.
I might get a Rivian just for the lack of glove box. I could stop my wife from storing 10 million napkins in my trucks...
They have trays at the front of both seats so you would store 20 million.
Trust me, she'll find alternate places that'll make you wish you had a glove box.
Lol feel your pain.
Vegan leather? Man vinyl has really got a great pr guy. 😆 🤣 😂
Sounds better to some marketing person than pleather I guess..
Personally, I like the Rivian better. I also like how well they've seemed to hit it out of the park for a first vehicle.
That being said, there's no question they have some kinks to work out. But that comes with the territory. I also like how Ford didn't make the lightning drastically different from the normal F150. I feel like that, in and of itself, will make it more attractive to people.
Those "tie down points" at 13:39 are not tie down points, they are mounts to move the rack from the bed rails to the roof.
The sidestep that Andre was looking for at 14:03 are the gear tunnel doors that were already shown at 7:00.
Yeah, missed the gear tunnel but it is irritating that they don't have a bumper. I saw one person who worked around that rear step issue with a hitch mount bumper step.
I think having that step over the entire side by the door is still helpful. My wife is on the short side and when she tried getting on the rivian it is challenging for her even with the 9.5in clearance setting. With the lightning she has an easier time. The steps provided on the tailgate also helps to get into the truck bed... I wish rivian had implemented these. Honestly, I like rivian better in terms of performance and the interior, but they should have thought a bit more about ease of access
I like how you have the coal electrical plant in the background!
All coal plants in Colorado will be closed by 2030
I like the F150 since I could use the pro power onboard and the Ford is plenty fast for me
Rivian for me. Perfect size and a jack of all trades.
I think the best way to describe these trucks is Rivian is what you get when Californians design a truck and the F150 is what you get when Texans design it. Especially note the two way charging capability which I am sure was inspired by the massive grid failure they had in Texas a few years back.
F150 lightning for me it’s more useable like pro power on board & it’s just a bigger truck plus I love ford trucks
Andre, being that the F150 has independent rear suspension, ground clearance should decrease under load. I’d be curious how much ground clearance it has as payload was added.
Great video guys! Well, you know which one I would choose, but I will say that each have very different and great features aimed at a particular user type. I wish the Rivian had the payload weight feature and, yes, a glove box. The Lighting can hang with the Rivian for sure, well, unless it's a drag race. :)
Andre missed the gear tunnel step on Rivian. 🤣
My 1999 Pontiac had a built in air compressor, nice to have, should be standard on GMC Wagons.
Nice review. Why make a motorized drive selector? Is it not already electronic? Could have made a different type of shifter and reduce complexity a tad bit.
man that ford screen lag is awful. if v2 does heat pump, 800v, and improved cpu itll def be on the short list!
Heat pump on the 24s!
RIVIAN!!!!!!
Both are great but need more range so can tow. Need 500 mile Plus. So can get 200-250 towing
You'll have to wait for Tesla's top spec tri-motor CyberTruck which will have over 500 miles. If it has the new 4680 cells it should get an extra 16% range bump to nearly 600 miles.
Best side by side comparison I've seen between the two trucks. Thanks guys!
While I like them both I'd take the F150, the ford is a true workhorse while the rivian is just a SUV with a pick up back.
I hope the lighting comes with a option of a bench seat in the future. For those who just purchased a truck may want to look at the ford crate electric engine. This would be a cheaper alternative for going full EV.
I need a bed occasionally otherwise I go on road trips and bring my gardening tools to the community garden. The power onboard seems nice, but the interior being premium and the driving experience of the Rivian will benefit me more in the long term
Fully agreed.. Even in lower spec let's say 80k-90k (or any close price range) Rivian is more attention to detail inside-out better material quality that show were your money goes..
I mentioned already above i can not wait enough for Rivian to be available for sells on the European market.. ;0)
Have a good day everyone
I suggest wiping the interior screens before filming.
My favorite feature is the vegan leather seats. I appreciate that they finally found a good use for vegans.
F-150 lightning for me no contest
Rivian is basically a Honda Ridgeline electrified 😂
Rivian for sure
Traditional Work oriented truck vs off-road fun techie truck
Correction: Rivian outlets can handle 1500W not 400W each as stated. I’ve run Microwaves, cooktops and more.
Areas where Lightning kills it:
Frunk is Way more accessible and useful. Sedan frunks are nice to have. Truck frunks will be huge. Ford's is 1st rate out of the gate.
On board power. Very useful and practical. The ability to power a worksite or playsite with no noise is huge.
Every lightning is all wheel drive and 775 Ft-Lbs torque no matter price or battery size.
Size and shape. Personally not crazy about the F-150 derivative body styling but full size body on frame with aluminum body panels are awesome. (Rivian styling is a step up but doesn't speak to many full sized truck owners).
Areas where R1T kills it:
Adjustable suspension. Makes it a very capable on and off road. This will be a very popular feature for electric trucks.
HP and torque is amazing.
I love both of these trucks and would be proud to own either (lightning reservation). However RT1 has a basic problem; it screams adventurer and over-lander but the charging gets super sketchy for these purposes especially if you pull a trailer. The Lightning on the other hand says town and a little country workhorse where home/business charging and limited range make sense. Also Ford is gonna pump out significant quantities (150K in 2023?) whereas Rivian will likely be production rate challenged (maybe 40K/year?) until their new factory comes on line. For mainly these reason Lightning is truck of the year and RT1 is an "also-ran"!
Rivian also handles much better, makes it more enjoyable to drive spiritedly. Also the awd and torque are high on all trims of rivian too. Also the Rivian supports CCS bidrectional charging so in theory an adapter can be made to supply power like lightning levels, and Rivian has already confirmed they're building a home unit to power house with backup.
@@realMysta RT1 quad motor (a beast) is 900+ ft lbs of torque. Dual motor is 600+ according to Rivian.
RT1 is superior to Lightning in many ways. Just Lightning is the "home run" truck in my opinion. Would love to have both! Can only afford one!
@@jackgoodman4444 Yeah - don't get me wrong the Lightning is a great one from ford but for me I'd rather have the drive characteristics from the R1T. Also I had the benefit of early order pricing at dual motor price.
17:56 "Initiating System Startup Sequence" ... hello computer, do you has an AE-35 unit?
Lots of nice features that few can afford. The Pro would be a bargain in comparison, but the dealer markups are insane. When will we be able to buy one for UNDER MSRP?
If Ford has its way, never.
never. many of us can afford it, hence why they are sold out.
I'll settle for MSRP
When similarly optioned they are the same price. Actually rivian offers more with the 4 motors
@@laloajuria4678 if you like to overpay for a rapidly depreciating asset, knock yourself out.
Andre is awesome
The size differnece between the 2 seems in Rivans favor.. I dont think you need all that full size pickup function on the LIghtning as with the battery limitations that full EV has. The little extra storage behind the cab is great too with the Rivan..I would go RIvan.. especially since price is so close.
No Car play, no deal. Lightning is the _truck_ to own
6:00 you know what Rivian doesn't have? Stupid disclaimer screens that pop up incessantly and dumb beeping noises.
Why do Ford and GM go out of their way to make every user experience super annoying?
Ford all day
After doing some reviews on lithium ion phosphate battery. If the battery is fast charged on a regular basis will degrade the life of the battery. Slow rate charging helps preserve battery life. Most likely those using their EV'S locally and charging mostly at home will have a longer battery life than those charging at DC fast chargers.
Does either truck have the capacity of utilizing solar energy?
Max! Max! Max! Good job!!
I'm laughing at how you're trying to say the cheaper F150 is available, while you have to wait for the dual-motor Rivian. Really? You can't build or order a F150, unless you had a reservation from quite a while ago. And if you want to buy the one on the floor, the dealer wants $140k for the Platinum variant which has a list price around $96k. More than a $40k markup. They're both great trucks, but I wish Ford would get busy on making an electric Ranger, and get the pipeline going for some Lariat versions.
Why do all these channels ignore the fact that the Rivian "Glovebox(s)" is underneath each of the 2 front seats? All that detail and TFL and Out of Spec both just ignore it...what gives?
Why don’t you compare the RIVIAN R1T to the FORD Maverick??? They are essentially the same truck body. Also, the FORD F-150 Lightning and the RIVIAN R1T share the same skateboard architecture from RIVIAN. Keep in mind that FORD invested $1.4+ in RIVIAN in recent years. How else do you suppose FORD has been able to so quickly develop the prototype F-150 Lightning and bring it to market so quickly????
I just had a thought. Racing will be a lot quieter if you are, ahem, avoiding attention. No roaring motors. That is both awesome and terrifying.
The Rivian is nice but where do you get it fixed if it breaks? At least the Ford has the support infrastructure in place all over North America. I'm a mechanic and I always tell people who by non mainstream vehicles that it's beautiful until you need warranty work done and there's no dealer for 500miles or more.
Old fashion drag race for the win. Lol. To be honest, I love both trucks. The biggest issue with Rivian is that the brand is still unproven, but so far, things are looking good. The F-150 is good across the board, but off-roading the Rivian is much better. The R1T, in its lowest setting, still offers more ground clearance than the Ford. And that rear electric motor (maybe front as well, IDK) is going to get ripped off at some point, somewhere, by someone hitting a rock on the trail, I guess that is the issue with using a platform designed initially for an ICE. However, great job by both Ford and Rivian.
The outlets in the bed, and much better frunk, and practical interior make the F150 a much better and more versatile truck. Imo
Not sure what a locking differential has to do with the front and rear wheels or what they're connected with
The lightning is probably a better truck but after looking at each of them close up the fit and finish on the Rivian was better. That pro power onboard Ford has is a huge selling point in my opinion.
Is it all aluminum or aluminum skin with steel inner structure on the body panels?
What kind of camper will the Lightning get for the trip to Alaska???
Perfer a diesel but if I had to have one the Rivan.
If somebody slapped a magnet on my truck like that I would flip out.
Please, don't encourage people to bring a portable speaker on a trail. Most of us are out there to enjoy the sounds of nature.
I would go for the blue!
One issue. Can’t get a Rivian.
I don't like rivians "frunk" You can tell ford actually thought about how people are going to put stuff in and out of that so you don't have to reach over a giant wall i'm six two and i still had to reach over that to stick stuff inside of it. You can hook your phone up do you truck on ford you'll probably be able to do that with rivian as well but, As of right now ford don't have to carry a key... While I do think the gear tunnel is interesting It still doesn't feel as useful as having a decent size truck bed. But that's just me
I like whichever one gets 400 miles of range.....otherwise both are good.
I'd rather have Andrey's hybrid ... ha ha ha , he can haul a trailer a distance
I just can't watch videos with max
he's a pretty cool dude.
100 percent. Max isn't a real enthusiast. Just a tech kid
A smaller version of the F150 would be pretty cool
This is funny and great reviews. 👍👍
Anyone else cringe at the magnet just being tapped onto the paint.
PPF for the win.
The Rivian any time
An F-150 Lightning with the more modern tech from the Rivian would be the perfect EV truck.
you know what people will really be doing with that center fold-down console? Eating off of it. Let's show a test of how big of a meal you can fit on there.
not a fan of the artificial drama of 'well my truck has....' this one upsmanship should be left on the school yard.
These trucks are both fine iTrucks but they are focused on different markets. As someone strong biased toward the F-150, the Rivian suspension leaves me with some envy and the hole in the middle of the rivian feels gimmicky and not so useful for me.
Hands down the biggest feature for my use-case is payload & towing. Rivian wins for off-roading without a doubt. some mentioned right to repair, no clue how rivian wants to handle that, but fords will be much easier to service, generally.
Thank you for saying front trunk. F**k the frunky frunk word. After a while, it's just a trunk, front or rear. Some cars have had front trunks for decades.
How much tequila do you plan on carrying?
You guys should have a car lift, like SavageGeese...
F150 is going to put Rivian out of business soon
This comment didn’t age well.
Rivian is new generation vehicles while ford is old like Nokia vs Apple
The Rivian isn't bigger than a Tacoma, the wheelbase on pretty much all EVs is pushed out towards the ends than traditional vehicles. Wheelbase is a poor size comparison, just compare the actual size.
For design the old man reach step
F150 is amazing it is bigger and has more load capacity in everything it is better
The Ford is more appealing due to the history of the company and they will likely be around way after Rivian goes insolvent.
Let Max Science! 👨🏫
The Rivian power outlets can't run a coffee maker, that's a fail at the camp sight.
1500 watts can run a coffee maker
@@GregHassler" Rivian R1T comes with three 110-volt power outlets located in the bed with 400 watts available at each." But not 400 watts.
@@heathwirt8919 I believe their numbers were not stated correctly. The rivian can run a full electric camp kitchen
Ford doesn't come with a $30,000 compressor. Hmmm....
I prefer the Ford F-150 hybrid, if I am going to use it for work or towing, the Ford Lighting doesn't offer a better experience and I feel that I am paying more for the same truck.
Work as in loading it up to max payload would be fine. Minimal range loss, about 0.1 mi/kwh, which is nothing. Towing I agree, unless youre doing under 100 miles in a trip, youre far better off with ICE.
You guys and all the other car reviewers are killing me with the thumbnails. Why are you all holding your hands out???? What’s wrong with just standing there or just showing the trucks and not the two of you bozos??
Clicks. Kyle / Out of Spec, Doug Demuro, TFL, Alex on Autos, everyone does that stupid pose for more RUclips clicks
The F150 is a nice truck... but allot of trucks out there Ev/gas/Hybrid can give you everything the f150 has ... alternatively the R1T is one of a kind. The closest you get to it is maybe the RR defender ... although I think the defender is more money. What I'm trying to say is that if you went from the lightning to a raptor or f150 hybrid or any nice f150... you wouldn't notice much difference(except for power frunk). If you went from R1T to Defender you will notice allo of difference. For 1...the defender doesn't have a truck bed. The R1T is one of a kind truck. The F150 is just another Ford truck powered by electricity instead of gas. Even the model X won't give you allot of the features of R1t. The R1T is far from a perfect truck . Although if it was lighter and charged as fast as a tesla... it would be perfect.
The Riv was hit with an ugly stick.
[=0====0=]
The Rivian seems more an SUV, not terribly useful, more for recreation
I dont like Max
Come on guys, Do a tug of war!!!
Neither one is useful for the average day induvial ;reason towing and not a lot of distance.
Both of these vehicles are made going to the mall or grocery store.
I need a vehicle that can tow a trailer with tow atv's and go up to northern Minnesota and back.
There are nor chargers on the roads I travel; so I'm not able to use these vehicles for any of my propose.
When they figure out how to have unlimited mileage then I would be interested in owing the f-150 lighting
All pickup truck owners on the internet tow a house trailer 600 miles per day. Neither one of these can do that so they are only good for driving to the corner store to get a pound of Olive Loaf and a cigar.
You'll have to wait for Tesla's top spec tri-motor CyberTruck which will have over 500 miles. If it has the new 4680 cells it should get an extra 16% range bump to nearly 600 miles. Chevy's new EV pickup has 400 mile range.
Where in northern Minnesota? There are definitely CCS chargers up there.
Kid real men drive fords 😂🤣 rivien still has a long way to go to make good truck not great but good ford has 50 years of perfection 👍🏻 most that mombo jombo stuff u can add to ford truck after market stuff more to choose then that truck beat that 😂
TESLA, where are you?
They use so much salt here in the winter that Rivian will be rusting within 5 years. You can't find a truck here that's doesn't have paint bubbling around the wheel arches after just a few winters.
Fords have been aluminum for well over 5 years now. Cybertruck will be stainless steel.
Talk more about range, range while towing and towing with a typical loaded bed. 🤔
2nd🤪
Sucks
rivian is super woke
Rivian is woke? Okay now I don't want one.
I go with the rivian. Heard battery replacement on there trucks is a lot easier and overall interior looks like better quality for the money. Don’t get me wrong the ford is cool. But all they are offering is more space… if you don’t need it why get it.
Nice comparison. The Rivian has excellent air compression and rides like a sports car on the highway, an off roader and a truck when you need it. Mostly, so much detail in the Rivian. Absolutely love driving it.
Both are impressive and full featured, the choice between the two comes down to usage style.
