I've actually got Rosetta stone... It was a gift from my parents, and I got it at a discount. I also studied Japanese in a part time course, and I'd say that Rosetta Stone is only useful beyond a point if you're studying alongside it, otherwise I've no idea how I'd remember the vocab or learn the grammar properly... It is good for one contiguous learning curve though.

Wow, surprised how many people seems to feel like Rosetta Stone is good. I tried it too, but I didn’t feel like really learning. I think some nice textbooks are better to learn for.
But maybe some people, who worked through the whole thing, can tell more about it. (Like which level could you pass on JLPT with the knowledge you gained in Rosetta Stone. Can you read Kanji text afterwards? And so on)

I'm going to uni to study Japanese next year. I don't care about spending so much money, I want to be able to go to a classroom with other students that I can spend time with, and start a study group with. 3rd year will be 2 semesters at uni in Japan so I'm really excited!

The way I became fluent in French is by listening to French music, watching French films, and reading French books. I became friends with French people and my bosses at work are French. I speak French all of the time. I also do creative writing in French. All of these things together really helped me learn the language. The truth is that you have to be very active in trying to learn a language; there is not just one simple solution. If you want to learn a language, you will. If not, buy Rosetta.

@rainbowrants If you're Rosetta Stone has errors, it's either because you downloaded an illegal (non-updated) version, or for some reason you have refused to click "download updates" which fixes all the typos and such. Rosetta Stone is by far the best software I have ever seen for learning another language and I'd highly recommend it to anyone serious about learning.

So true. But at least majoring gives you something no program can give you: connections! Through learning Japanese at my college I was able to meet Japanese exchange students, learn about stores in my area that sell learning software and just hang out and have a good time with friends I've made while practicing the language. I even now know a few friends in Japan now where I could crash if I ever wanted to go there. So yeah, it's worth it in the long run lol

Excatly. I tried the Spanish one a long time ago. I learned like 5 words within the first 10 minutes. And I got some of the grammar. And that was the first few lessons (I didn't get to do more, a friend was loaning it to me). Japanese. I torrented it. I did! I'll admit it! But I couldn't even get an ounce of help from it. But luckily, I had already had some Japanese in me. So I understood a couple words. Their verb forms, or whatever it was, were crazy!

Definitely true about the adverting of Rosetta Stone.
Immersion of any kind is helpful. Even a Japanese movie you can buy or rent with English sub-titles. Learn a few basic phrases, watch a few movies with and then without the subtitles.

Yeah, I use a pirated Rosetta Stone and it IS is a really nice supplement, but like you said, nothing more than that. It doesn't even translate to you what you are learning, it simply gives you (sometimes confusing) pictures to look at and say words to try to associate them with.
So, please listen to this fine chap and use free resources, everyone! : )

I bought their online pack special they had going a few years ago. Some of the features I do like about rosetta stone is the flashcards and a decent vocabulary spread. However, I did have some issues with it since there was little to no explanation of grammatical points (like ha, o, to, ni, ect.) and just threw you in there. This made it insanely difficult for me on the speaking with native speakers portion adding on top my anxiety of talking to new people.
Long story short, it does have some useful points, but I wouldn't solely rely on rosetta to learn a language thoroughly.

  • @MattEureka
    @MattEureka 14 лет назад

As far as I'm concerned, Rosetta Stone is simply the best way to learn Japanese....ever. I have been using it and am learning huge amounts of the language extremely fast. I recommend anyone use the software, especially now that it's been re-released with version 4, which offers live coaches and online communities. Also, Koichi, it's not $1000. It's around $500 for all 3 levels of Japanese. Sometimes less at Barnes and Noble. And yes Koichi, it's VERY immersive. Anyway, my grade for Roseta: A+

I tried Rosetta stone, but honestly, didn't work for me >.<
Anyways I had a question for you. Specifically, what Order should I go about trying to do this? I Love watching various anime (and games) With Japanese dub, and english subtitles, because I can pick out words here and there that overall, I think add more to the "story". But I'd like to be fluent, First speaking, then reading.

School lets me use it for free. Would only recommend if you don't have to pay and only to practice/begin learning. Only finished level 1 so far- thinking about taking classes and, hey! It was free. So I'm gaining a bit of knowledge before language classes. It's especially nice if you don't use/rely on romanji. Learned quite a bit of hiragana and a bit of kanji and katakana. Pronunciation's always been easy for me, my native language is Spanish.

I agree with koichi. I have rosetta stone for japanese 1, 2. Got it for free from a friend and its not all that. Definitely not worth the high cost for him. Your better off with something else. I used Pimleur japanese level 1-3. I'm almost done with level 2 and going to three. Pimsleur is effective but it requires practice and lots of patience because it does get boring sometimes. In addition, theres lots of other ways to learn Japanese for free online but just get a Japanese friend if you can.

Considering the price you'd have to pay to study at a language school (with all its pros and cons) Rosetta Stone isn't that expensive. However, as it has been noted, there are tons of free materials out there. Anyway, I love Rosetta Stone and would recommend it with all its flaws and strengths.

  • @Apocryphon368

The cost isn't as much as you make it out to be. It's around half of what you said for all versions including Totale. I've actually bought the software, and it isn't all that bad. Aside from flaws such as misleading pictures ever now and then, the software is quite solid. Add Textfugu along with other textbooks + Japanese TV, and there you have a very nice solid Japanese learning environment. If you want a overview of what Rosetta Stone actually does just head over to me and I'll show you :)

  • @JoJoTheOtter
    @JoJoTheOtter 9 лет назад

Idk, I've been very satisfied with rosetta stone. I was having conversations with Japanese after a couple of months using it. The reason it's so expensive is because it's usually meant for companies and schools where one copy could be used by a large amount of people. So if you are getting it for yourself, you are paying for tons of other people too.

I find that people who actually speak a language that Rosetta Stone tries to teach HATE the system. Is it because it works and they hate to admit it? I'm doing Rosetta Stone Japanese, and I think that it's the best way to START learning the language. Don't think that you're just going to learn it from RS. But I do hate how they have the pics, and have what they're doing worded in Japanese, but not English. So you gotta utilize some sense, or you can get confused, thinking that when you say "Kanojo wa, Shinbun o yonde imasu" you thought it's a group of dudes eating an Apple. So always seek physical help as well.
And I got this for FREE.

@wartarot Well, it's not possible to learn Japanese at a conversational level without actually having a conversation, no. WIthout having someone to talk to, what you learn won't magically let you speak conversationally.
However, it's more than possible to study at home with books, videos, and CDs, and then just TALK to people in Japanese without needing a teacher or class. I and several others have done it. I even tutored Japanese at my college without having taken classes.

ok rosetta stone is a great program. you cant really bash the program if you already know japanese. of course it wont be good then, but if you are new or whatever its awesome. People try to think they need to learn how to speak, read, and write all at the same time. screw that. just learn how to speak it. if your a master at speaking it you can learn the read and write later, and it makes it way easier to learn.

Sadly, this video came too late for me as I already own a copy of Rosettastone... and although I liked it at first -yes, I did believe the hype- I'm now very unhappy with my purchase. Rosettastone only created an illusion that it was helping me learn Japanese when actually it most likely wasn't. However it does have a very nice interface and no spelling errors (as far as I had used it to...)

I bought 5 levels of Spanish for less than $500. Also, you cannot learn a language just by listening to podcasts in that language. Lastly, RS lets you speak with people in the US/around the world who are learning the language or speak the language and learning english in addition to online lessons with a teacher You can't find that free on line

I don't have rosetta stone, but I've learn so much Japanese without it. Just like this kid said, there are many alternatives, even some that are better.

Rosetta Stone is free to all military members. Should they take advantage of that?

1200 dollars? Really? It was only 400 for the entire set. And really it's not that much money. About the same price as an average game system nowadays. And considering taking a beginning japanese class at a local community college can be in the upwards of 400 bucks- i'd say the program is well worth the cost.
I actually find the program quite useful- far better than any other program I've ever tried- apart from actually going to Japan.

Your prices are a bit exagerated...but it is clearly for satirical purposes. Well done.

he thing with Rosetta stone is that it doesn't teach you conversational. It's very good for vocabulary and certain phrases. I would say use Rosetta Stone, but use alternatives while using it.

I don't really feel like the intent of the question was addressed in this video. Price aside, corporate image aside, does Rosetta Stone correctly teach the language? Is it a good and accurate method of learning the language, or will it teach uncommon phrases / words that may be "correct", but are never used. I find the problem with a lot of other resources is they have tons of information, it's all there and available, but it doesn't offer any sort of plan, or "curriculum". No way to test your knowledge or understanding at appropriate intervals without something like Lang 8 where you can just make people angry if you totally don't grasp anything (and also requires you're able to type in the language before you can start). Rosetta Stone promises an actual curriculum to follow, so the question is more towards: is the content it teaches accurate? Does it emphasize the most important aspects? How far can its curriculum get you into the language? Basics? Sentence construction? Conversational? You talked about it being expensive, but I didn't hear anything about the program or any aspects of it's teaching methods. I'm interested in the program, not the corporation that sells it.

Rosetta stone does teach you the language, but with a language like Japanese, its not really good for writing memorization, its best part is just the speech, since japanese doesnt use a normal alphabet like most other languages, its extremely impossible to learn by what Rosetta stone presents you with. I know this guy just looks like he is trying to advertise his website, but its actually a really good resource, i tried to learn hiragana from Rosetta stone but could never memorize it, then i found Tofugu, now i know the entire hiragana "alphabet" if anything, get started, Tofugu is an extremely well done resource. www.tofugu.com/japanese/learn-hiragana/

@regisnotxaiver EXACTLY! I just "got" Rosetta Stone with the Japanese Levels today. It was alright but after trying it I feel it's DEFINITELY not worth $1,000+. They don't even explain the grammar/syntax, it's just brute memorization.
