1. Your ready position and timng with a split step 0:24 2. Compact swing both side, you're ready to go forward to meet the ball, you're ready to cut off the angle 6:00 3. Your intention on the return 10:27 Thank you, Simon, for this video. Step number one worked for me amazingly. I've just restated tennis recently after two decades of absence (and I was a poor player before that period). In a single day, at first I could not even move at all against fast serves. Then I remembered about split step. In just one hour, I was able to return fast serves quite hard with my forehand and even backhand as well. I was just surprised that such a simple trick, which I had never noticed its existence, can make this big change in a short time.
This is such a good video. While I was playing singles yesterday my coach was watching and told me to follow through on my returns. I often forget to follow through, catch the racket etc and this noticeably affects my game. Him picking up on it brought it to the front of my mind yesterday and so when I was going through my emails just now and spotted your one about this video I just had to have a look! Perfect timing. So now I have seen this I have an action plan, and by improving my return of serve I may also, by association, remember to follow through on all my groundstrokes! Thank you Simon and Alex X

Great suggestion to focus on your intention with the return. Too often, I feel defensive or even passive waiting for a serve. Driving and approaching on a second serve is a great idea. My volley is nothing special, but it can make my opponent doubt himself and try for too much on his next shot!

Hi Simon, great lesson as usual. The. Only thing is, even if you explained why it's convenient for you to hold the racket with the fh grip, the vast majority of times I have to return from my bh side. So, as far as I see it, it's almost pointless to having to change grip almost all the time, while it's much more convenient to prepare the return with the bh grip, which is right 90% of times. Thank you.
In those cases, where you return 90% of the time with your backhand, it makes more sense to stay with your backhand grip. The question is, why are you returning 90% of the time with a backhand? There are ways to force your opponent to serve into your forehand side
I’m battling with big serves mostly because of the swing and not making the split step at the right time, but with this video I’ll be working on that this week. Any exercises with the basket or medicine ball that can help too?
Very, very good instructions! I have already used some of your coaching on the court. I Am looking so much forward to practising your 3 steps in return serves. New subscriber:-)
Hi Simon, superb n very sensible and easy demonstration of the rotating the body concept with short swing. One thing i would like to know. Does it help if u predetermine your return to the corners near the baseline and really attempt it while facing a good server. Or we just focus to keep the ball in play?
It would certainly help if you have a target in mind for both your forehand and backhand returns. That way, wherever the ball goes, you're already set up mentally with a target in mind, so executing it becomes much easier. Thanks for watching! Are there any lessons you would like to see from us in the near future? All the best Simon
Thanks for a great lesson on returning of serve. My problem is that sometimes I am choking when I serve. I get so nervous with the thought that I would toss the ball so bad because I keep bending my elbow. My toss would go all over the places, and my serve is either out or very soft. Can you help me?
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial I'm from the Philippines and I'm 12 years old ,i would like to learn how to make insane top spin in forehand and backhand, would you help me?? To make my play perfectly. Thanks by the way for replying my comment. I hope you'll post more videos .
wooooow this is massive to me.. my tennis story in a few words: im righty but playing as a lefty, i had a really good adapting phase (thanks God) but i had some trouble changing grips (specially when i have to do a fast switching, continental to semi-western, when the opponent is at the net for ex and misses a good volley, opening a good chance for me to pass with forehand, i hit slice again because of that lack of agility). So, I started returning serves very good but using a semi-western grip , holding the racket as semi-western position.. a friend of mine told me to return holding continental grip (to practice this grip switch agility that i need) but i thought the right was a backhand grip, using continental grip, not semi-western as you told! I didn't even think this was possible (i have only 1.6y of tennis but i work hard/research, so i'm at good level already). I'm not questioning the tennis knowledge you have (love your channel and skills) but are you sure players returns are using semi-western grip on dominant hand even with continental position? this is a massive change to me! ty, cheers from brazil.. i love your content!
Most pros start out in the forehand grip with their bottom hand, but will change into a backhand grip when they're preparing to hit a backhand return. Thanks for watching. Are there any lesson you would like to see in the near future? All the best Simon
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial i tried and it was pretty hard for me.. i'm used to return using bottom hand in the forehand and racquet position in semi-western already.. i can switch fast to bh grip.. do i still need to change that? just because pros returns are fh grip and bh position racquet? its so hard to me
Hey Simon, thanks for all the videos. They’re super helpful! One area I struggle with is being reactive rather than proactive during points. Do you have any videos/advice on singles strategy, shot combinations, etc? I need some help on how to create a plan when playing. Thanks!
If you could make a video on how to track the ball on the return of serve I would really LOVE that. There's more time to watch the ball on regular ground strokes but I'm losing it on the returns. Do you have any tips on how to keep one's eye on the ball during the return? I can't find any videos on this and all your other videos are super helpful. Thanks.
Great lesson. I think lots of us struggle on return because of lack of practice. Short of finding someone to serve lots of balls, are there any tips on practicing returns?
Thanks for watching Nate Yes there is a way to work on the return of serve swing, whenever your training partner comes up to net and hits volleys, you can use your return swing to hit back. This is a "trick" I always use to warm up my returns prior to the match starting. All the best Simon
Great explanation how a perfect step one should look like... a club player struggles more often with his backhand return. No ideal situation. Barely if any splitstep.all kinds of horror technical. All players play their serve to backhand. If they can't return a serve with their backhand I tell them to grip the backhand grip. I solved their problem in the now, taking it from there. After they get a feel for it. I try transfer to continental grip. I want those swings short & controlled. The final step comes with the confidence of knowing they have two other options if the perfect textbook one fails. Mainly because timing a very fast serve if you aren't used to it, is hard to do. Simplifying things helps. Their are no points redrawn for not doing it textbook. Coaches / trainer don't learn you play the most easy way. We learn them the most effective way so they can win matches. My reality is when I would only be satisfied with perfect execution, I would have a horrible job. They all play at very low level barely above beginners. More often then not the beginners become the strongest players in my club. Also I am dutch, english is not my first language. We as a people tend to be more direct in conversation.
All misconceptions about net play in dubbels specially lane covering I gets too much attention. You only have to cover the lane is heard all over the world it seems. Making dubbels a very static game. Very it doesn't have to be. I teach from the start defensive & offensive position they should try to move between them covering the angles of the other net player. It is very basic stuff but very important. Doing it right can improve their game drastically without even touching their techniques
Most players are far more likely to target his backhand so he's probably just accepted he gets maybe 10-20% of returns on the forehand side so why not just set up for the backhand. Thanks for watching All the best Simon
Great tips, really enjoyed the video. I'm struggling with a rarely discussed aspect of the return: doubles returns. I can't seem to get my returns away from the middle of the court (where they inevitably get poached). Do you have any ideas or quick tips to help with directing the returns away from the middle of the court? Thanks!
Something that works well for me is to imagine the doubles sideline is your baseline. In singles, my focus is on getting the ball back deep (close to the baseline) but in doubles, I focus on getting the ball as close to the doubles alley as possible so my energy is moving in that direction. Thanks for watching. Are there any videos you would like to see from us in the near future? All the best Simon
Hi Simon, I see in ready position, all tennis pros hold their rackets with the racket frame perpendicular to the ground, the racket face the side fence. If I close the racket face , let the racket face the ground, does it matter?
Do you mean on the return? On the return, you don't have much time to prepare for either side, that's why the pros wait with the racket in a neutral position, ready to go to the forehand or backhand

I’m battling with big serves mostly because of the swing and not making the split step at the right time, but with this video I’ll be working on that this week. Any exercises with the basket or medicine ball that can help too?
There are many drills to do with the medicine ball and baskets.
Most of them revolve around short swings and compact coil and uncoil motions

Thanks for a great lesson on returning of serve. My problem is that sometimes I am choking when I serve. I get so nervous with the thought that I would toss the ball so bad because I keep bending my elbow. My toss would go all over the places, and my serve is either out or very soft. Can you help me?

wooooow this is massive to me.. my tennis story in a few words: im righty but playing as a lefty, i had a really good adapting phase (thanks God) but i had some trouble changing grips (specially when i have to do a fast switching, continental to semi-western, when the opponent is at the net for ex and misses a good volley, opening a good chance for me to pass with forehand, i hit slice again because of that lack of agility).

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial i tried and it was pretty hard for me.. i'm used to return using bottom hand in the forehand and racquet position in semi-western already.. i can switch fast to bh grip.. do i still need to change that? just because pros returns are fh grip and bh position racquet? its so hard to me
Perfect video 🙂👍🏻

Hey Simon, thanks for all the videos. They’re super helpful! One area I struggle with is being reactive rather than proactive during points. Do you have any videos/advice on singles strategy, shot combinations, etc? I need some help on how to create a plan when playing. Thanks!
Hi Harrison
Yes we have many videos on singles strategy and tactics.

I really like the hybrid grip setup for the 2hbh. Felt strange at first but I was so ready on either wing--one less thing to think about!
Thanks.
Great coaching lessons!!
The the technique you teach is mostly used by pros.
I will be waiting for more videos very soon.

Great lesson. I think lots of us struggle on return because of lack of practice. Short of finding someone to serve lots of balls, are there any tips on practicing returns?
Thanks for watching Nate
Yes there is a way to work on the return of serve swing, whenever your training partner comes up to net and hits volleys, you can use your return swing to hit back. This is a "trick" I always use to warm up my returns prior to the match starting.

Awesome tips, loving ur channel!!!

great video but i notice kohlschrieber has a backhand grip on the return of serve, why do u think that is?
Most players are far more likely to target his backhand so he's probably just accepted he gets maybe 10-20% of returns on the forehand side so why not just set up for the backhand.

I went through returning with my coach today and they basically say exactly the same thing, excellent video
I agree Karl!!
