This is one of the best explanations of hitting a slice serve, bar none. Simon explains not only where on the ball to hit (i.e., between 1:00 and 2:00 o'clock), but takes pains to differentiate between hitting around the edge, and - correctly - hitting on the front face in the 1-to-2 o'clock zone, after the racquet begins to open up (pronates). Too many videos on YT ignore this subtlety entirely. Well, done Simon.
"But that is just a working mental image for the contact point on the ball in a slice serve." Yeah, no kidding. "Rather the REAL correct spot of the (first) contact on the ball should be somewhere nearer four or five o'clock and from there upwards or towards 10-11 o'clock." That's your opinion, period. Regardless of what AA may proclaim, an overwhelming number of pros and instructors advocate a 2:00 to 3:30 contact point. Crucial to understanding this range is that some players are tall enough to hit somewhat downward, while many cannot.
Am I missing the part where Jack says this is for a lefthander? Unless I have forgotten how to read my watch, from 4 to 10 has you hitting from right to left. Pretty hard to do for a righty, unless you throw the ball MASSIVELY over your head and somehow hit a reverse kick. Impressive! Then you call the Guinness people, register for the World Record, and then promptly drive yourself to the hospital, 'cause you're gonna need major back surgery, and STAT!
Best break down on RUclips. All the subtle things about the slice covered. And your demonstration is the always the best. Some teachers do the demo and I'm like oh shit I'm gonna get killed if I hit a serve like that. 😆

Throwing our shoulder to the ball! This year flat serve, slice serve and kick serve will be consecutively understood for my better game. Thanks a lot for your good helpful explanation.
Really excellent explanation of technique and contact point for the slice serve! One thing about the single position ball toss. Pete Sampras is often cited as the finest example the single position ball toss for any serve technique. Yet in an article on serving which he did for Tennis magazine years ago, he mentioned that this was one of the most exaggerated stories about this game. He stated that even he used different toss positions since this helped to increase the degree of spin for each serve type. However, what was important was to keep it sufficiently close so that it was hard for opponents to get a read on it; ie: choose a balance between increasing the spin vs keeping the disguise. I suppose what he felt he did might not be what his opponents saw! Boris Becker certainly said on more than one occasion that Pete had one of the most unreadable serves he ever played against!
Sampras' toss was a rainbow shape, from the right side of his body to the left, in line with the baseline. He could make contact at various locations along that rainbow, keeping his toss the same for every serve yet allowing him the flexibility he wanted for different spins/serves
Great video Simon. I think the best description is to hit the ball from the front at 1 or 2 o'clock. Many times players use to hit the ball from the side and the ball falls into the net..

It would be really helpful Simon to see the ball toss from along the base line to your right, in order to understand exactly how far in front the toss should be. But, all in all a great video that transformed my slice serve. Many thanks!!

"Throw your shoulder to the ball". I've been struggling for years to "use my body more" on the serve with little success. I believe this mental image was the piece that was missing. Tried shadow swinging and it feels massive. I realize I've been getting power until now from my wrist, elbow and shoulder, but not rotation. Cannot wait to try it. Thank you!
Great video as always. I have trouble making contact with the ball at the desired point, e.g., 3 o'clock, etc. Any recommendations to hit a specific point on the ball rather just making "general" ball contact?
For the slice serve focus on the top right edge, if you imagine the ball as a flat image it would be easier to make contact there. If you’re trying to hit the side of the ball, it could become a problem

I'm just getting back into tennis 🎾 and this series of Videos honestly helps a great deal. The explanation and examples are insanely well done and I've been practicing the kick serve after watching this video yesterday in the afternoon. I'm not quite sure if I'm doing it correctly when it does come out. But, whenever it does go over the net it has this semi-high arc and quickly dips into a high bounce. Am I doing it correctly, or where am I going wrong if I am doing it incorrectly?
Good video and you have a pretty good slice serve from the deuce court with very good placement and control. When I try the slice serve from the deuce court it goes in the doubles alley if not out of the court.
Thanks for watching. If your slice serve is going wide, it probably means you are hitting the side of the ball (3 o'clock) too much instead of the upper right hand side (1-2 o'clock). Try to change the angle of the strings slightly as you make contact and you'll see a difference.
@transklutz - Try to open the shoulders more prior to contact and aim wider. Common issue is slicing the ball but staying side on to the net for too long. You'll get the slice but not the width.
@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Can you do a tutorial on slicing serve down the T? I know it's similar to slicing out wide but just not very sure on the toss, and where to hit the ball on the clock. Is it about 12:30 on the face or still at 1 o'clock on the face of the ball? Those were some sweet T slice serves that Sam hit.
Watched this once again. You hit some killer slice serves as they were good pace and bounced into the side fence. Just about as good as Sampras who would go to that power slice and back it up with a killer volley ( if it wasn't an ace). This is the best step by step instruction for the slice serve. Even ATP players should refresh themselves with this. I watch a lot of ATP guys serve crappy slice serves that don't go short in the box and hang up in the returners strike zone and get crushed. As an ex pitcher in baseball it's exactly like a hanging slider that gets shit on.. Lol😮😢😂
Hi Simon, great video. I have a couple of questions: 1. The position of the leading foot, should it be parallel with the base line? 2. Any tips for mastering the shoulder over shoulder move, I struggle with this? Cheers.
Hi Brian, the front foot can be positioned differently depending on: 1. Your stance, pinpoint, platform or hybrid 2. How much rotation you want with the lower body For the shoulder over shoulder action, it's something we cover in depth inside our Serve Revolution course, that would be your best resource for drills etc Thanks for watching. Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons Thanks for your response Simon. I have a platform stance and currently my leading foot is diagonal facing the net post. I’m getting a lot of lower body turn and finding on the slice the ball going too wide with plenty of net clearance.

Wow haven’t even watched the full video yet, but I just had to comment about Sam Groth’s insane slice serve!! I mean holy shit, I don’t know how anyone could return that type of slice serve. Because it’s so damn fast and curving away from the returner. Anyway, back to the video lol.

Aim to hit the ball at 1 o'clock for a good slice serve
Okay. I aim for 1 o'clock and my racquet face goes up towards the ball ya ?
11:05 very true. Also, if the opponent is reading the slice, and moving to the right, you can still hit the slice down the T.

How do you get used to the pronation after hitting the slice serve to the follow through?
We cover that inside our serve revolution course in depth.
A step by step progression is the quickest way to learn it.

Thanks very helpful
I'm just getting back into tennis 🎾 and this series of Videos honestly helps a great deal.
The explanation and examples are insanely well done and I've been practicing the kick serve after watching this video yesterday in the afternoon.
I'm not quite sure if I'm doing it correctly when it does come out. But, whenever it does go over the net it has this semi-high arc and quickly dips into a high bounce. Am I doing it correctly, or where am I going wrong if I am doing it incorrectly?
That sounds good, a good kick off the bounce indicates good spin levels which is crucial for the high bounce that you want

I will try that tommorrow at the club, thanks.
Whereas my natural swing tends to take the ball to the opponent's backhand, I struggle to slice wide to the forehand.
@transklutz - Try to open the shoulders more prior to contact and aim wider. Common issue is slicing the ball but staying side on to the net for too long. You'll get the slice but not the width.
Who was serving at 1:24? Can you do a video on slicing down the T? Thank you
Sam Groth, the worlds fastest server
Lol😮😢😂
Best channel
Great video. I’ll try tomorrow :)
Many thanks and good luck

Great video as always I appreciate it!
Hi Simon, great video. I have a couple of questions: 1. The position of the leading foot, should it be parallel with the base line? 2. Any tips for mastering the shoulder over shoulder move, I struggle with this? Cheers.
Hi Brian, the front foot can be positioned differently depending on:
1. Your stance, pinpoint, platform or hybrid
2. How much rotation you want with the lower body
For the shoulder over shoulder action, it's something we cover in depth inside our Serve Revolution course, that would be your best resource for drills etc
Thanks for watching.

Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons Thanks for your response Simon. I have a platform stance and currently my leading foot is diagonal facing the net post. I’m getting a lot of lower body turn and finding on the slice the ball going too wide with plenty of net clearance.
One of you best videos Simon! Thanks men!
Thank you for watching.

love this vid. Thanks I will experimental and master it! btw. I got my kick works but how to hit shorter with more angle wide? Do you have a video for that? appreciate that! :)
Wow haven’t even watched the full video yet, but I just had to comment about Sam Groth’s insane slice serve!! I mean holy shit, I don’t know how anyone could return that type of slice serve. Because it’s so damn fast and curving away from the returner. Anyway, back to the video lol.
tram lines, haha love it.
sick serve btw.
