    If you go back and watch some of the episodes from 4 years ago, it's strange how civilized Rex was. It's been fun watching him grow increasingly unhinged over the years.

      "Familiarity breeds contempt", eh? He's learned A LOT about whisky and scotch that's allowed him to have more refined opinions based upon a combo of his education and experience. These guys are pretty fun to watch for the most part and they lapse into legendary when Brianna gets into the review mix.

    For what it's worth, I don't think this channel would have lasted if it were either of the guys by themselves. It really is the "greater than the sum of the parts"-ness that makes it work.

    I bought a bottle of Brimstone because of the review of it on this channel and DAMN I love it!! Balcones makes some great whiskey!! Also, on a side note, the Daniel doll on the shelf over Rex's shoulder is owing me 🤣🤣

    Balcones's Blue Corn Bourbon is their blue-corn bourbon. The True Blue is a corn whiskey, i.e. it's aged in reused barrels. Both have the same, 100% blue-corn mashbill. Both are delicious.

      I've yet to have their True Blue. But their Baby Blue is one of the most disgusting whiskies I've ever had. 🤷‍♂️

    • @PhinClio
      @PhinClio 2 года назад +2

      @@shmirginhymer1867 I much prefer the True Blue to the Baby Blue....but I kinda like the Baby Blue (it does taste very young, very corn-y, and sweet). To each their own, I guess. As Rex and Daniel always say when reviewing Balcones whiskies, the distillery has a very particular house style. Much of that style consists of the very intense barrel notes from aging in their Waco warehouse. And though that barrel impact happens quickly in the Texas heat, the Baby Blue is very young and has much less intense barrel notes than most other Balcones whiskies. On the other hand, some of the house style is the distillate itself; I've toured Balcones and tasted their new-make corn whiskey (which eventually becomes Baby Blue, True Blue, or Blue Corn Bourbon depending on what barrel it's put in and for how long) and it's already a pretty distinctive beast. All of which is a very long-winded way of saying that you might like True Blue even if you don't like Baby Blue. But, though they're pretty different from each other, they share a mashbill and the family resemblance is clear.

      @@PhinClio Ive had their Baby Blue, and Texas Single Malt. And was not a fan of either. I picked up their Rumble, and for some reason kind of liked it. Even though it was similar in style to the single malt, but had less of that burnt barrel flavor that I get from Balconies. I will try them all eventually, I'm just very skeptical

    I’ve gotten one of their Texas malt whiskey store picks down in Tampa that’s at 63.2%abv that’s my absolute favorite bottle ever. The bold maltiness continually draws me in. Best $70 I’ve Ever spent on a bottle over and over. I think I’ve gone through 4 bottles of this and am ready to grab another.

      I'm about 2/3 of the way through the (Norman, OK) Spirit Shop barrel select version of the same. I'll definitely pick up another when I'm through with it (assuming they still have bottles). But they seem to have just gotten in the Balcones peated malt whisky, so I think that's my next purchase.

    This is not their blue corn bourbon released at cask strength. Blue corn bourbon is already at cask strength. This is their regular True Blue which is a 100 proof corn whiskey released at cask strength. They don't taste the same. This is sweeter

    Has anyone else ever experience blue corn bourbon as being "hotter" in the mouth feel? I've had Balcones Baby Blue and one other blue corn bourbon and experienced it with both not an ethynol burn but more "like" a cayenne pepper effect (not pepper taste).

      Balcones (and a lot of other craft distilleries) have embraced "batch" releases. Which means they accept that there can be variation in the releases over the years as long as they stay close to the identified flavor profile that people know and love. But because they're doing smaller barrel dumps for the releases, it means there is often variation in proof as well.

    How does blending of various casks impact the classification of the whiskey? For example, would blending in a cask of malt whiskey into typical bourbon casks prevent it from being called bourbon, or can the final percentages in a bottle be calculated from the various components?

    • @robviousobviously5757
      @robviousobviously5757 2 года назад

      to remain a Bourbon all blended elements are required to have 51 percent corn and new oak barrels... malt whiskey would make it just a blended whiskey.
