- We finally get to drive Monica, the @WhitelandRestorations Volvo 240. From a quick two-week resto, Monica ended up undergoing much modernisation and customisation. We await the inevitable comments about the headlamps. 😉

I honestly don't like the headlights. Apart from that it looks epic. 👍🏻
I like them!
They look ok on a stock car with all the chrome trim.
You took the words right out of my mouth!
I really don’t like them either. …and I always wonder about LED lights with regards to oncoming traffic. Headlights aside I like the car.
The headlights aren't for everyone but they are definitely for us!
Cool car, can’t go past those headlights though, looks like truck headlights.
Rest of the car is great.
The lights do grow on you. I mean, you can imagine my upset to see headlamp wipers removed but I love the look of Monica. You certainly know when she's following you!
I love how much Leanne adores this car; her enthusiasm when talking about it is superb. And rightly so! It’s an epic build!
Awesome Volvo, worked in the Nissan factory in Victoria Australia around 1975. this model Volvo was also assembled there as was the VW Passat Worked in the paint department for a while carrying Nissan bonnets and doors to the various stations on the line, One day i had to carry a Volvo bonnet to that line, dam it was as heavy as 3 Nissan bonnets. Never thought you could make a mean looking machine out of one of those safe but staid looking cars, and i love the headlight treatment LOL
Normally I don't really go in for modified cars, but that Volvo has presence in shedloads. It certainly has something about it. They've done a fantastic job with this old Swedish housebrick on wheels, and the majority of the comments seem to reflect this with the amount of people who seem to like it.
Thank you very much!
@@WhitelandRestorations Gladly - it's a heck of a job you've done!
Wow Monica is a beautiful car sounds great as well.
Thanks Ian, Carly, Lewis & Leanne.
Thank you!
What a wonderful rescue for Monica. Some brilliant thought has gone into her both inside and out to make her an award winner. That she will evolve somewhat in the power department is another journey I'll be keen to see. Seriously It's great to see her out on the lanes after a long rest and body surgery. A lovely end result so far. Many thanks for sharing. A top job Whiteland Restoration!
Thank you very much. We think we've done ok by her. She's part of the family now
Monica is a work of art!
Proof if it were needed that Lewis and Leane know their stuff.
Whenever you road test cars in that area, it always reminds me what lovely roads there are around that area.
Thank you Huw, kind words as always. The roads are truly beautiful round here. Might do the Elan valley route next week
If it were mine, I'd change the headlamps. But it isn't and over all I like the car very much as it is: colour, stance, wheels, even the rear spoiler. Please revisit when the other engine gets installed (not that you'd need much encouragement I guess).
Oh my, Monica is lovely, what a superb achievement! I'd say that this was a triumph, but it's not, it's a Volvo. A WR Volvo with character.
The Roadtest we have been waiting on. I was one of the ones who was not keen on the headlights, but seeing Monica in the metal at Rustival the lights make Monica and actually suit the car. Truly a beautifal Volvo with a amazing soundtrack.
I think seeing her in the flesh is different to on the telly. Glad you liked her when you saw her. Thanks for watching!
I don't care for some of the things on this car but this is not a criticism. You should make your car the way you like it, the way it makes you happy. Overall very cool car.
The only thing I can say about that is it's stunning!! Not always a fan of modernising a classic but it's been done well tbf.
It's well worth watching all 62 restoration episodes! There's a playlist over on the Whiteland channel.😁👍
Good call!
We're there really 62 episodes! Felt like it flew by!
Great video Ian. I love this car and think the raffle is amazing top paint work for £10! Can’t go wrong!
The Eggenberger/Nordica 240 turbo's actually gave the BMW 635CSI and the TWR Rover SD1 Vitesse a good run for their money.
Volvo won 2 world championships in a row.
It was the touringcar racing era before the Sierra Cossie and M3 e30 and M-B 190e Cossie
Thanks for finaly taking us on a ride in Monica , Ian ! What a beautiful car! 🫶👍🏻👍🏻🆙
A lot of work went into this car and the end result is great. Have you driven a "regular" 240 yet?
We haven't somehow. Bit lacking in Volvos generally.
I really adore the work and effort that the Whitelands are putting in their projects. I don't know the definition of «perfect», but they are quite close to it. Have fun and I'll see you soon --- Martin
Martin you are too kind! We try our best but always strive to do better 😊
Wow very jealous you got this experience, Monica is such a fine machine. Shout out to @WhitelandRestorations - love the channel, will definitely have to catch up on the Monica playlist!
Many videos in that playlist to keep you busy. You might be shocked at what we found when we stripped the paint!
This is a fantastic looking Volvo.
The paint job plus the modifications make it look rather handsome without going too over the top.
I remember as a kid parents of a childhood friend of mine had the estate version of the 240. With this era of Volvo you know what you’re getting: Lots of space with Swedish reliability and quality.
Wow, aren’t those headlights controversial, I love them, as well as the rest of Monica. As a huge fan of hot rods and custom cars, the whole thing appeals to me. Not to mention being the perfect advert for what can be done if a customer wants something special instead of just a factory condition restoration
They sure do strike a conversation! Thanks for watching, glad you like it!
No matter what your thoughts are about this car, you have too admit a lot of work & love went into this build.
A lot of love has gone into that car 😊
@@WhitelandRestorations And it shows 🙂
"Gazumptuous" exhaust note, from a very pretty vehicle. Superb!!
My Dad had an 82 264GLE back in the 80s such a comfy car and it did shift with the 2.8 V6! And of course it had headlamp wipers! 😆 YVW 467X I believe the reg was!
Monica looks stunning. I love the modern interior touches.
Thank you, can't beat a bit of tech to make the day to day driving that little more pleasant
@WhitelandRestorations I was noticing at the Festival Of The Unexceptional a few cars had those period looking modern car radio's, with DAB, Bluetooth connectivity and hands free phone system fitted.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian miss hubnut ❤👍what a lovely car brilliant
Am I the only one who hears “stroker crank” and imagines Kenneth Williams pulling a face?
All said in the best possible taste! 😂
Love that car, not a fan of the old 2xx 3xx and 7xx volvos, but Monica is an exception. Fantastic job they have done on her. Also I don't generally enter raffles but have done on this, but not for my 206, but my ex wifes 206 as it needs tlc. Highly unlikely to win, but if I do then thats where the prize is going.
Amazing 240! Also two of the nicest people I’ve met at Rustival
That's very kind of you to say, thank you very much!
The attention to detail is amazing, what a lovely car 😁
Thank you very much!
Change the weird spoiler and headlights then it'll look spot on.
WAAAOOOUUUW! ..and i'm a dane ;-)
Well I do like the headlights. I wouldnt do them myself - they are very silly but I really appreciate people putting a bit of ridiculous in their cars. So I think they are great. As is the rest of the build.
A project car never ends really, there's always that one other thing that gets added to the list... :P
It never ends 😂
Tickets purchased 👍 All fingers and toes are crossed!
Good luck!
Love the head lights I love the 240 & estates bullet proof cars
Its obvious that the work has been carried out to a high standard but I just dont get the attraction and I bet she costs a fortune to run.
Thanks for posting
Not really, it's super cheap to insure, it's going to be free tax from next year. Part availability is amazing and very well priced. Ok it gets 21mpg but it's a petrol car and it's fun to drive. I don't think that's bad.
I love that front end and the rest of the car. Quality and style
It's "evolvoed" from the original quick turn around idea!
Brilliant! I’ve got an 81 244 and this is a super goal to aim for on its restoration!
Good luck for the resto!
@@WhitelandRestorations thanks a bunch! Have you done any 140 series projects? They are so rare over here in Canada now, but they really are sharp looking machines.
Penta crank is stroker. It makes 2.3 to 2.5 litres. I do not recommend to bore block to the maximum. Leave some thicness to the sidewalls. M45, M46 and M47 gearboxes aren't known to accept gear changes at high engine rpms. M90 included.
Below I wrote about the existing 2.5: vibrations limit any big 4 without a balance shaft. I once had a Chevy Monza with the 2.5 Iron Duke: that was no fun!
Not all Penta cranks are stroker cranks. When we install the new build we'll be upgrading to the M90 box too. Obviously that comes with its own mods.... Will be an interesting series!
@@WhitelandRestorations Yes. I did not think that it was necessary info to write here. Modify the M90 box so that the 3rd synchro ring doesn't broke and destroy the whole box. It is known that when changing gear from 2nd gear to 3rd fast and high rpm. It may break and the chips fall between gears and you know the rest.
My favourite of cars and this one’s a beauty!
Also very glad you opened the door and clunked it shut brick shaped Volvos have the best door closers.
The door clunks on the 240 are legendary!
Ian seemed very impressed with Monica. I am too, beautiful car. Looking forward too the engine build Lewis and Leanne. Thanks Ian and Carly
We're really looking forward to getting stuck into that too
Not my cup of tea but it's nice to see a retro mod getting respected. Ironic for a business with Restorations in the name.
I find those headlights disturbing. The car has lost its face, and it looks like it has cataracts.
I think it looks awesome myself.
I have mixed feelings about the lights myself, but I think that’s a very good description.
Love the car but I'm on the fence about the Head lights, not really my cup of tea.
Top quality resto. I had a 5 speed 240 and I found it was way too high geared. In Tasmania I could rarely use 5th. I think they were built for fast motorway cruising but wasn’t much good in hilly terrain.
Definitely happier on a high speed cruise.... Does better on fuel then too 😅
I like the paint. Would have preferred a stock appearance but with a more modern Volvo 5 pot as they sound amazing.
We've got a 5 pot engine lined up for the Amazon...... 😬
It's a superb, subtle modified machine. Lovely car
Thank you, although I've been told it's far from subtle 😂
Nightrider would have traded up to this if they had re commissioned the series...
If only I could set up KITT's voice for Google 😂
I hope TWC wins the raffle!
I really like the interior of the Volvo.
The whole car is a great business card for Whiteland.
I often call it a mobile business card 😂
Good video 👍👍👍
Love it, cool but also playful.
Playful is where it's at!
On the safety front, I just googled to see if airbags can be installed in old cars. It is a complex job but can be done costing about £1,500 per air bag. £6,000 should fit 5 airbags in your average 5 seater saloon. Probably money well spent especially if its the family work horse. Lovely Volvo, I will keep an eye out for its progress. Cheers.
What an epic car and what genuine people, entered the paint competition after because my r171 Mercedes slk needs some serious paint love! Keep up the videos and fingers crossed for the paint job 😂
Oooh good luck for the draw! Thanks for watching 👍
Common Wisdom: "Volvos are irredeemably boring and suburban."
Monica: "Take a chance on me."
😂 great line that one!
Out of all the car style shows a watch That E30 & OVLOV would be in my collection, Oh yes also Tuk LoL
Currently working through the last of the E30 niggles and they should be out together soon!
Can’t believe I missed this video coming up. What a beauty. Will defn look into the build of this car now. Can’t wait to get one of my Volvos on the road again. Got a 78 244dl (Bert) and he is so desperate for some paint I am considering hand painting even. Thanks, fab video :)
Getting similar vibes to the Alfa Romeo SZ or 'il mostro' (the monster) as it was nicknamed for it's brutish looks.
Many years ago i had a 245 with the 2.3 injection, although without the cat, from factory!
It was an automatic, but still fairly quick. For a brick, that is.
I loved that car, but it guzzled to much gas for my pocket, so i traded it in for a Renault 21 GTX Monaco 2.2i. Gained speed AND gas-milage! But a Volvo it was not...
This..........this is art
Looks fabulous, I soo need an automatic estate volvo in my life
Flying brick volvo
What a awesome car 😎
Love the look and sound, seems to be neatly built with good taste 👍
Oh that's a lovely build. Really high quality, lots of effort gone into it. Well done to the owners.
Amazing piece of work. Well done guys....
PS i like the headlights as well 😊
Now that is my idea of a modern classic.
Correct engine as well. Nice exhaust sound.
Awesome
Things I would change….
Go back to regular rectangle headlamps-LED upgrade?
Remove the spoiler at the back.
Add fuel injection.
Aside from mods this must be getting fairly rare now, being the sedan version….the estate easily old sold it in the UK.
I feel the need, the need for Swede!
Said Anthony Steele until about 1959
Hell yeah!
Hubnut you will have to go back and drive Monica when the other engine is fitted another Volvo red block an extremely reliable engine and it can take modifications because such a great engine and a great combination of old and new tech
love an old volvo 👏
Volvos definitely had coffin nose front on the u.s headlights. I hate when there is misinformation .The grille is 262 or 242 turbo.
The led lights design is tacky but i guess it's fun for the owner.
Yes they did but with slightly different front end setups. We had to modify a lot to get it to fit. That's not a standard grill, it's been shortened. Also the indicators are different. Subtle changes.
We had a 240GLT estate it was the turbo one and went like stink. I believe it was plod spec!
A Volvo with no flatcap insight. Monica is gorgeous. Love all the small touches, too.👍
not sure what's wrong with everyone... the headlights are amazing!
Stunning car loads of trick parts , lovely colour & I for one love the front lights 👌 very ,very cool motor 👍
Thank you very much!
Monica sounds like she is going to participate in the next RAC rally.
She's dying to be able to actually overtake something first 😂
I'm really not on board with those headlights. Should have kept the originals.
Nahhh they don't have change colour halos!
A very striking and individual car, beautiful.
Thank you 😊
I like this old Volvo and what has been done to it, yes including the headlights which at any rate still look better than the stock quads we had in Canada until very late in this model's production. When it comes to power, the easiest way to gain *a lot* of power in this car body is simply to swap in a small-block LS V8. Easy swap with any of the kits that exist to do just that.
Where would you USAnians be without your LS engines...? 🙄
@@HowardLeVert I don't know, maybe we could find a USian and ask him.
Lovely car I drive a Volvo S40 1.6 myself for work has a taxi
another great video has always Ian and Carly miss/mrs hubnut and hublets and hubmutt 👍
262c the only Volvo I would want!
Loved the 260 series , very safe cars , not sure about your traditional Volvo driver though 🤣
Suspension: Hunt the Noise. One of my favourite games, I dont think. Bad enough on your own car, worse on a customer's when you're supposed to know exactly what it is, instantly! 😅
Best car ever
Cheers! 😬
That spoiler is a work of beauty. Id of thought it was ABS not metal.
That android head unit is a nice choice too, still looks age appropriate but adds thr modern stuff we all are accustomed too.
I must admit i dont like the multi coloured switchs. Each to their own but Personally id of wanted black switches.
Id of also gone with an estate over a saloon. But i love an estate car.
:( i was liking it until i saw that boot spoiler sorry, your car, your choice but not for me
1k Like... Awesome motor!
Thank you!
At last!
🤘
Good things come to those who wait 😂
Beautiful build.
😊 thanks!
Monica the VOLVO...!?!?
Surly you mean Victor the VOLVO.
Forchrissakes now you've got me at it too!
AY UP MR HUBNUT
I'm a big fan of older Volvos and can see there's loads of work gone into this and also it's theirs to do as they wish, but sorry, I really don't like it. Of course 240's aren't too scarce, so as long as they're happy it's all good.
A little strange the comments about the wheel size (unless I misunderstood).
Twenty years even my 2002 diesel Mondeo had 17" wheels as standard and I believe 18" wheels were available for the ST model.
It would have been different in the Volvo 240 production period but that was 50 to 30 years ago.
I must admit this is a little overstyled for my taste but it is unusual and distinctive and that is rare nowadays.
Not a fan of the headlights or the spoiler if I'm honest, but wasn't made for taste. Still the rest of it looks great, what is normally a bland car now stands out.
Yeah that spoiler looks odd too big and very vertical
The boot spoiler is a bit much. Other than that I like it.
That colour is almost identical to the blue used on base model Hyundai's
The detail on this is outstanding. Are there any pics with the headlights fully lit rather than just their DRLs?
Can't find one sadly!
volvo 240 very strong, early 90s i was sitting on a wall and i saw a accidendt a vauxhall cavalier brakes failed rammed a volvo 240 all the front end pushed right in and volvo bumper fell off
I hate the duck tail, totally ruins the lines at the back for me.
Cool car, indeed interesting mix of old and new technology.
Went a bit "HubNut" mode myself today, got inspired from your test drive videos to take a videoclip about my car wipers (2016 Kia Rio), front and rear. I plan to take video footage also from the front and tail lights as usual in your test drives and maybe even release it in RUclips :)
Is it ok if I'd mention your channel, and put a link to your channel, if I do that video?
Not a problem!
