Fond memories of my Dads 244DL, an ‘82 UK X reg in powder blue. I learned to drive in it, not the fastest or best handling but nevertheless it still saved my Dad in a huge rear end motorway shunt. I love to drive one again one day.
best car ever made. difficult to find one now in good order, and parts are scarce. plenty beaters tho; but the rebuild of body, mechanics, electronics, interior, etc is a long and arduous job.
I bought an 86 DL 6 min ago.im just now driving it and getting into restoration.im a Saab person but I have an XC70 and decided to buy this because I've owned several older Volvo cars.they are well made.
I have the 1986 Volvo 240 DL. The "overdrive" light actually comes on when the 4th gear (overdrive) is locked out. I use this feature all the time because I live in the mountains with curvy roads and the 3-speed automatic AW70 transmission (bulletproof, by the way) is peppier for accelerating and also for keeping my speed down when I let off the gas in tight turns. I only use the 4th gear (overdrive) on the interstate when I go over 60 mph (overdrive light is out). By the way, this little 2.3 liter "Red Block" can cruise all day at 85 mph in extreme heat....I've done it.
@@JohnsGarageIreland When I enter the interstate from the ramp, I push the button on the side of the shifter to switch my OD light off at 60 mph and punch it and it goes into 4th gear/OD immediately. This engine loves the higher rpm's and is quite stable at high speeds. Surprisingly, I still get good gas mileage. It burns no oil, never overheats and has no leaks. The body however, does have some "age spots" just like its owner.
@boomerguy9935 I have a 1991 Toyota MR2 that I was going to do a manual conversion on but I've stuck with the auto. It has an overdrive button, standard drive ratios and a sport mode. Very unusual
In Sweden which I visited with my car from Gateshead on the DFDS ferries several occasions our friends there told us that they are referred to there as a Swedish Tractors. Still have my Volvo 855 Estate purchased new in 1994. If you maintain these vehicles they will last. Unlike today’s laptops on wheels when the printed circuits and/or software is no longer supported not even going to mention the E. V. Milk Floats or Net Zero… 👍🏻🏴
As a former Volvo owner and aficionado I have to commend you on your superb research. One thing about the red block though is that it became turbo only after 1995. It saw out its days in the 940 in either 135bhp (B230FK light pressure) or 165bhp (B230FT high pressure) forms. Both were the exact same engines with only a different turbo actuator separating the two. There were 200bhp and twin cam redblocks in earlier cars.
Was the redblock not Turbo charged in 1980 or was that a different engine? Appreciate the kind words as I know how knowledgeable you are regarding Volvos. Thanks 👍
@@JohnsGarageIreland Yes, that was indeed the redblock (you were spot on). RHD markets never actually got the Turbo (I think it might have been for packaging reasons). All 240's were redblock aside from the diesel's (Volkswagen) and PRV V6. As I said, I couldn't fault your research. You had interesting anecdotes about the safety and construction of the 240 that even I was unaware of, so that's high praise indeed.😅👍 Glad to see your channel is going well.

Great car, I think Mercedes brought out the wrap around light, along with the snow proof rear light, hence the channels on their earlier models. The rear lenses on this volvo can be revived by detailing, as you would with ghe paint work.
Great video you said the owner needed lights, radio they could try ashley classics volvo parts near Manchester airport they will post out to you great lads very helpful do ford parts aswell 👍☘
That overdrive button should work opposite - the arrow light illuminated indicates overdrive is off. At least it does with Australian models. It should default to being on on each start up.

best build car in the world it is a shame that the diesel engines are bad, that is the only reason that i drive an mercedes. the best car in the world would be an volvo with an mercedes diesel engine, But if you need an petrol or an car on lpg there is no car better
That engine bay is cleaner than my kitchen 🫤
I have one exactly like this one. Absolutely Love it. Been travel ing in it since I was 10 years old. Iam50 now
A safe way to travel too!
It’s either very fuel efficient or has a massive fuel tank if you’ve been on a 40 year journey.
Had a 1989 240GLT auto estate with the 4 cylinder 2.3 litre engine, from 1996 - 2000. Lovely family car, holidays in France and Spain. Perfect.
This is the best review I've ever seen of any car in my life
These cars looked old fashioned even when they were new. They look great now, love the interior
They're such an easy step into classic car ownership without the constant battles with rust and finding parts
@@JohnsGarageIreland I constantly get compliments from drivers who are "in the know" about these classic beasts which refuse to die.
With the button on the gear knov, you DISengage the highest gear ratio/overdrive. The arrow on the dasg reminds you of that
240 For Life! My daily driver is a 1982 240 K-Jet 🥰
My first Volvo was 240GL manual, my second Volvo was 240GLT auto. It was fun driving this model. 😊

It genuinely still feels solid, it must have been a huge step above similar cars back in the day.
Lol @ "they're boxy but they're good"

Wow such an extensive review on all the features… great source of info.. I am looking to collect the wagon version 1992 none turbo…
Oh...I miss my one SO much!
They're a lovely car, thanks for sharing

It's a proper tough unit. Thanks for the overdrive info, I've never quiet gotten how to use it effectively

The condition of that 240 was amazing considering it's back story
I have exactly the same Volvo for everyday use. Same color with automatic transmission. The only difference is that I have a 2.3 liter.
Nice video 👍🏻

Thanks John. I think the owner keeps an eye on the comments here so hopefully gets to see it
Thank you for this! It looks like you enjoyed yourself as well 😂 an added bonus shall we say.
I really did, I'm soon going to keep an eye out for one, I think they're great!

Yeah
What they 👆🏾said. Same thing in the USA
Great review, if you could choose between the Volvo or Mercedes 190e you tested previously for reliable everyday use which would you go for?
Easy, Volvo for me. Funnily enough, I talk about this in a future review of a 740GL
Looks like the same colour as Involvo'd.
Bellissima
Is it for sale?
No, the owner has kept it since 2002 and only just put it on the road

North Korea never did pay for those 240's!
And still, every year, the Swedish government sends them a bill plus interest for them. Crazy!

I don't remember the diesel engined ones but that probably explains how poor they were. Diesel Mercs were just unbreakable, brilliant cars.
@@JohnsGarageIreland they used the vw 6 cyl lt van engine
Engine was B20
Even better than Mercedes..
