- In this video, I teardown an AOD from my friends 1989 Mustang, problem is blown converter. This trans was built before, has the wider band and later reverse input drum. At the end I go over a couple of common problems that the AOD "family" of transmissions have, slips forward or no forward is a common problem, I show what frictions should be purchased if you decide to overhaul one of these transmissions

Learn a lot from your videos every time! You make it so no matter what experience level is watching they can adapt! Thanks a bunch
Thank you, and thanks for watching
Thanks for all the information on this one Gary! Problems very well explained. I'll keep you informed about my 4t65e trans that I'm working on.

ok, sounds good
Thank you sooo much for this video. I just rebuilt the AOD from my 1992 Mustang. This video not only confirmed my work, but showed me something I missed. Glad I saw this before it went back in.
i know Im randomly asking but does any of you know a method to get back into an instagram account?
I was dumb lost my login password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
@Angel Korbyn Instablaster :)
@Kylen Ulises Thanks for your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Kylen Ulises It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much you saved my ass!
@Angel Korbyn No problem :D
Finally a video that I understand wish I found you months ago ! Just bought a 1989 mustang gt it’s been sitting ten years ! I had to replace tv bushing and the tv cable also had to drop the pan a few times to free up the sticking valve thingy but seems to jump right into gear now without slipping! Hopefully I will get a little while out of it . I looking into a t 5 swap .. great video 😃
Thank you
More good stuff in this video than Indian math tutorials. Brilliant. I sure hope there is a part two! Looks like I may only need to tear into the valve body.
AOD, AODE and 4R70W are really similar internally :) I’m only an amateur but did a full rebuild on a 4R70W a couple of years ago and exactly what you show with the flaking clutches and torn seal happened to my trans.
Yes, same family
Throttle bushing, LOL 😄, use too do a lot of those units for a cab company back in the day. And that sticky governor 😑😑. Thanks Gary😉.
yes sir, very common problem
Hi Gary, Always enjoy your videos.
Thanks Andy.
I have taken my intake off many times on my 91 Mustang to modify things etc and i have lost probably 10 of those little snap rings that hold the TV cable to the bushing,I'm gonna put a new engine in October, I'm looking forward to finding all those clips ha ha ha,i know they are buried somewhere under that engine, i ended up making a brass bushing to go into my throttle body, haven't worried about that plastic bushing going south in years.
hey, thanks for taking the time to film, i know it slows you down although you are really fast and efficient. i have a 4R70E, and have a p1744 code, and no TCC engagement. im thinking the spring in the bypass clutch control valve is broken in the valve body or it is hung up and not seating. i seen you find a broken spring on a taurus in another video.
is it possible that the seals on the shaft going into the torque converter (that fluid is pushed through to activate clutch) could be bad and im loosing pressure there? when the lock up tries to engage, there is a light scratching sound (like its just barely making contact) and rpm changes slightly before it shuts the lock up off.
I'm getting ready to buy a junk yard AOD 4x4 to learn how to do a rebuild. This video is fantastic! My current truck AOD is acting up with bumpy shifts at 1200-1500 requiring a kickdown push.. guessing that's the cable. Also skipping when accelerating on an incline. Thinking i over-filled it. Pulling the pan, doing filter/gasket to let some fluid out since i know it's overfilled. great video!
Did you ever do that rebuild? ive always wanted to do that, Ive messed around with motors quite a bit but transmissions i have always been scared of,lol , those things have more parts in them than a nuclear reactor ha ha ha
@@dntlss naw, i ended up needing an E4OD for my mass air swap so i sold it! I'm considering getting a book on the process though!
Gary, i have one in a 65 ranchero behind a 302 from a 70 mustang. Trans works great but i am experiencing a slight droning vibration in 3rd gear. is it anything to worry about, or have repaired.
Very informative video, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it!
what should you look for with a solid reverse idle movement but accelerator just slips, the TV cable is all sorts if mangled
So much great info but too little brain for me to keep it in. I'm going to retrofit an AOD into a 69 Mustang but I'm going to let a pro handle the rebuild. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching Dave
Hello! Great Video. I plan to rebuild an AOD with 4r70w internals to retrofit into my 71 Cougar. Current plan is to purchase two cores and rebuild the AOD. The goal is to get the deeper gears from the 4r while maintaining the mechanical operation of the AOD. Have you seen this done and are there any pitfalls I need to look out for? Past experience has been in TH350s, 400s, and the C6 that currently resides in the Coug. Engine is a 400Hp/420Tq 351C. Thanks in advance.
Do you build performance aods? Im currently going through a financial nightmare, two shops allready costs me 3 Grand to build and AOD tot hold up behind my 351c.. with around 600hp at the crank. I learned alot now on this transmission since doing research myself and it seems there is alot more to it. I then found lentech in Canada who has experience with aods.. but wil cost me another 3.5k. currently thinking what to do..
I learned i need to have a single 31 spline input Shaft and a non lockup converter. Also possibly 4r70w drums and a manual continu high pressure valve body?
Hi Gary, I had the AOD in my 88 Lincoln rebuilt this past winter. It engages perfect, no slippage or anything like that, but there seems to be a wicked drop in line pressure when engaged in reverse or any forward gear. TV pressure is maxed (cable is as short as it can go, pulled tight with zero slack) estimated to be about 70+ PSI at idle in neutral. When road testing the car, it shifts like there is insufficient TV pressure (feels almost like the TV cable is fell off the throttle lever at the throttle body or set way too long).
So far I have tried another valvebody, fiddled with the TV pressure, added friction modifier to the ATF, nothing seems to change anything. If TV pressure is set to 35 PSI as per instructions, it goes even softer. Worst issue is early 2-3 upshift with little to no 3-2 downshift unless speed is under 20 mph.
The car is an 88 Town Car with HO converted 5.0, no additional mods, transmission is an earlier unit with the 3-4 accumulator piston and has a B&M TorkMaster 2000 RPM stall convertor. Rear axle is stock 3.08:1 open.
Any ideas what could be causing this condition?
Great video, thanks for posting!
If you give it gas on take off does it shift late through the gears or does it shift early like no throttle pressure
@@GaryFerraro still early, 2-3 is worst, but will not go into OD at WOT as it should. Lighter throttle, earlier softer shift as a rule. Seems slightly better when cold. No 3-2 kickdown unless you're slowed wayyy down (
nice video ..just took apart my AOD because of a strange metallic noise and some vibes ... what I found was a damaged Sprag..the front one ..that was all .. Trans was rebuild and worked without problems ..also the OD Band looks some kind of bad ..its a Kevlar unit but it seems its like Heat broken .. there was very little clutch material in the pan and oil looks clean ..just some very small metallic Piezes in the Pan from the sprag.....Im not exactly a Mecanic ..take that thing apart was not that big Thing ..hope Ill get it back together ...hahaha ....
i got an 1989 bronco with an AOD and a 302 i HATE it the thing shifts up fine but cant hold OD over 60 mph and shifts down HARD and late kuje coming to a stop light 15 mph and it feels from 3rd to 1st
1-2-3 smooth 4th bogs down 4th to 3 jerky 3rd to 1st skipping 2nd also 4x4 tranz shifter gets too hot to touch during normal driving so i know the trans is cooking
any idea plz help me out with some ideas
What's the name for the part number for the friction plates that don't flake?
How does the hydraulics determine when to change gear?
Great video. As a tip turn the exposure down on your camera, it'll make bright objects less bright and easier to see.
Thanks again Gary. i have a question for you. I too, had the spring for the pressure control lever on wrong. Now that I have it in the notch, the lever has just a touch of counter-clockwise play, putting a touch of pressure on the valve without applying tension to the lever. Is this normal? Thanks
As long as it has full movement, you should be fine
Ford had a recall on those throttle bushings I did hundreds of them at the Lincoln dealership back in the days
i never knew that
@@GaryFerraro yep I think I got 2 tenths of an hour to install
My question is will the 4R70 clutch drums work in a 4R75 because my forward steel drum split and set me back $160.00 and the rear one is $650.00 so I just used the stock one to rebuild, I see the drums on the 4r70 look better quality?
The drums are different, which drum is 650.00, never paid anything like that before
Gary, when one of these units comes in with unknown modifications such as the extra clutches, separator plate, and valve body modifications do you put them back together like the unit came in or do you prefer to start over with a TransGo shift kit so you know what has been modified? Thanks for sharing! Also I think 2014 was the last year for the 4R70/75 before the 6R series started. Great video!
If they come in like this one, i look to see what was done and make my decision, this one i rebuild back as it was
I was taking off the pan on my AOD on a 1986 Cougar 5.0 and a small plastic piece with a O-ring was in the pan. From looking at your pan removal section, I dont see where this would fit back in. Can you help me out with this.
If it's a yellow plastic piece with a small stem and o-ring, that just mean the pan has never been dropped before. That piece is in the hole where the filler tube goes, at the factory they just install the filler tube and knock the piece into the pan
good afternoon friend, I hope you can help me with a technical question.
how many rpm and how much hp does an OEM aod torke converter support.
Thank you
Really Depends on the car, I would say upto about 450 HP, if 500 or more I would go with performance converter
Had a very quick question. Liked your video, by the way, which gave me the impression that you know the AOD Trans like the back of your hand.
My best friend, who owns a well know California hot rod shop, gave me an AOD that has been completely gone through with a 2400 stall converter attached, and has been sitting for 10 years under the workbench and has never been installed since the rebuild. I've never even had the pan off. If there is nothing oxidized or rusted internally, what parts/gaskets should be replaced before running this behind a build 408 stroker in my 1970 GT350 Shelby Convertible? Or should this transmission be completely gone through again? What is the shelf life of one of these transmissions after rebuild? This was originally built to go behind a sbf 427 stroker in a 34 Ford. The trans has never been filled with Trans fluid. To be honest, I'd be afraid to drop this off to a trans shop where I don't know the people! It's hard trusting people these days, I have several friends who have had transmissions rebuilt, and it seem like they break again a week after the 1 year warranty is up! LOL! My go to guy has retired, and his shop is 200 miles away since I've moved. Seems like all the good old boys are either dying off or retiring!
The only problem you may run into that i can think of is possible your govenor valve maybe sticky, you can access the govenor by pull the extension housing off, there is a valve that floats, no spring, make sure that is still moving ok
How many bushings are inside the stator? I have AOD(89) and there is just one rear bushing. thanks
Bushing is normally in the middle or towards the front, the forward clutch rings seal in the rear of the stator
My transmission is doing that now really wish I knew where you are located would let you do my transmission
you said the torque converter was bad, and i didn't see what component failed to cause all that metal in the pan, unless it was the two spun bushings. how did the torque converter fail? thanks in advance
converter 100% At the end of the video, I think I showed inside the hub where a bearing piece was, Not sure who rebuilt the converter but I just put a stock one back and all seems ok
Great video... where do you get the blue seal tools...? Thanks
I probably bought those 30 plus years ago, I think from transtar
Excellent video and break down. Question what cause the early AOD to buzz in park? My 1988 5.0 mustang does this when it's at temp.
does it go away in drive? maybe a valve buzz
@@GaryFerraro hi...only does it in neutral. Never in any other gear.
Any recommendations for a tool to remove and replace bushings in an AOD?
Look online for a set of bushing drivers
that transmission sure looks clean on the outside.
yes, inside was loaded with metal from the blown converter
Thanks Gary! Can the valve body be flushed? Or does it have to be replaced every time? My problem is the AOD not wanting to shift into OD everytime.
Can be cleaned and new gaskets put on, what happens? does it neutralize when it shifts to 4th?
@@GaryFerraro its very strange. After about 30 mins of driving it wont shift into od. Park it then the next day it works fine for a little while then it does it again. Does not neutralize just wont shift into OD .
@@dninit1002 Make sure the cable is hooked up ok at the throttle body and is secure. Could be something with the valvebody or the seals for the o/d servo

Hi mr Gary after we rebuild transmission today i test my car shift 1st gear and second gear is ok but it is not shift 3 and 4 gears. İ tested both overdrive position and D position same problem. What you think may be valve body?

I broke the nut off my TV shaft in the transmission taking it off to put a different tv cable on it. How do I fix that?
The nut on the outside where the arm is?
Hey just got done watching your video and gives me the confidence to tear into my AOD. But I have a question I'm pretty sure you can answer for me. It's a 92 AOD 4wd. I got it rebuilt for my truck while I was doing alot of work to it. Once I finally got around to putting it all back together the warranty had ran out. After the rebuild its still doing the same thing. Acts like it's low on fluid so it take forever for the gear to engage out of park. Then when you drive it's jumps for 1st to 2nd as soon as you give it any throttle. I've adjusted TV cable, changed the valve body, flushed the fluid, changed filter. And when I dropped the pan, the bottom of the pan was full of the black gunk. In your professional opinion, what do I need to look for?
How is reverse?
@@GaryFerraro takes it a while to catch like it's low on fluid. I have to feather the throttle and it will finally catch.
@@rolandsgarage8640 reverse is good or works same as forward
Works the same as forward
@@rolandsgarage8640 If you changed the valvebody already and that did not fix, possible pump issue, you have the small cork gasket on the filter?
I have another question Gary. My AOD is done and in the car. All gears shift except when it gets to OD, it seems you can hear the drum slipping on a loose band like the servo isn't engaging. Could this be a bad servo ro a valve body issue? I did instal a Trango HP kit and 1,2 and 3 hit hard and work just fine.
ok, are you sure you caught the band on assembly of the trans? the throttle cable is hooked up?
@@GaryFerraro yes,I made sure I could see it and pushed in and ou to confirm.
@@anthonymazzola767 Did you install the piston for the o/d band before installing the intermediate clutches and the pump?

What happens when the tv cable return spring is hooked up wrong

Mr. Ferraro, have you considered doing a video on modifying an AOD with a 4R70 gearset? I am interested in doing an AOD build that would take advantage of the steeper gearing offered by the 4R70W. This should help my big cammed Cleveland come off the line a little harder without resorting to a big ring gear in the diff. I would also be interested in other hard parts from the 4R (or anywhere) that might make my build live a little longer. Perhaps also a link for those of us looking for the Exedy parts used here?
Kudos on the channel. It seems to be helpful in directing business to your store. The MB story on Yelp was some good press for you and AAA-1 Trans.
I really don't do the performance work(no time) shop is packed most of the time. Yes the MB, Dealer tried to screw the guy, but I caught what they did and straightened it out for him and yes, just recently got a job in because of reviews and actually got a Mercedes in today. It does help. If you do the right thing, you will be rewarded, so when a lot of shops are slow, I am always busy.
Hello Gary... at "9:56" you mention a possible filter gasket missing. I just had mine serviced and when I make a right turn and the transmission is cold, half way in my turn, the engine will revup as if in neutral, then the transmission will catch hard eventually. The problem goes away when the transmission is hot. It's that filter gasket missing, right?
Either the gasket or seal is missing or it's low on fluid
@@GaryFerraro Well considering the dipstick shows the level to be nominal, I guess the gasket is missing :) Thanks for your quick response and your insights. Great video!
@@msboston01 To see if it's truly full, when the car is stone cold and engine off, pull the stick out wipe it and check fluid level, with engine off and car cold, fluid level should be 2 1/2 inches above the full mark

I would say either you have a broken band or frozen stator rings for the reverse input drum. When the reverse input drum bushings go bad, the drum lays down on the stator , wears down the ring lands and the rings get stuck and can't rotate
