  • Look down memory lane of the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. A very popular place over the years in the North East of England.

Fantastic video, Colin. Such fond and happy memories, spending time at the Spanish City with family and friends. I would love to have seen it in its heyday in 1900's! Hope you and Carole are well. Thanks for the post......

This made a life long impression on me through the Dire Straits song Tunnel Of Love. Still on my must see bucket list to see some time. Thanks for sharing this wonderful and informative video. Cheers from Holland,
    Michael

Great video! Spent my teenage years in the '60s at "The Spana"! Happy carefree days!

Great photos! Still remember Sundays hanging around the ‘Spanish City’ with friends as a teenager in the early 70’s. We would all get the train from the Central Station in Newcastle. The Waltzer was always a favourite, Happy times!

Worked on The Demon's Den ghost train for a Summer in 1972. Used to jump onto the back of the car and crouch down, then halfway through would run my fingers through the passengers hair, halfway through the ride was a hidden door so i would jump off and go through the door and be standing infront before the ride came to a halt. Fantastic days.

I never understood then and still don't understand how so many rides and the lake !! all fitted inside what I suppose we would now call a theme park. Thank you for this, it was nostalgic and novel at the same time.

I remember in the 80s my parents would never let us go there alone. I only found out later that it was because fairgrounds and amusement arcades were magnets for nonces. I understand that it's one of the various reasons why Metroland closed down in the Metrocentre, it was attracting a number of wrong 'uns.

If ever a local council actually did its job its the refurb of Spanish City and the closure of the puke pits that served stag nights or hen parties in Whitley bay - congratulations.
