@Malachi Diego I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
yeah I was tempted by them as well (please bear in mind I've only done a couple OCRs and don't have all that much experience) but they just seem too damn elegant....
Hello..Great review. The main reason I'm not buying them again is that feature at the back of the shoe. Though I bought the right size, my achilles kept rubbing and caused blisters to both my feet plus the shoe material around that area was worn down. I actually use some tape now. I think they're more like mud trainers rather than rock trail ones. I only use them for training. For my races I use my Speedcross 5. Nikos, Greece.
I owned the speedcross 4. They were fine, but I was advised that I should not wear them in rocky areas or on asphalt. As well that they are more meant for muddy/sandy areas. I tend to do hardcore mountain hikes where there is a very big mix of terrains ranging from grass to boulders. My speedcross 4's soul quickly got destroyed from the rocks with chips in the studs and all that ugly stuff. I gave them back to the store because they did not warn me about how to use them. They gave me the advice to buy the spupercrosses for a more rounded shoe to suite my needs. I find them comfortable and more snug around my foot compared to the speedcross 4's, have yet to try them on the mountain! My only complain so far is the shoe laces dont really have a place to keep them like the speedcrosses.
I live in Atlanta, Georgia. I am mostly a road runner due to time, but been running on a trails once a week or once every other week. Love doing long runs up on Red Top Mountain when I have the time to make the drive. Started looking at trail shoes recently. The rock plate is the main reason for looking at trail shoes, tread hasn't been as big of a issue running on the trails.
I just bought this adventure, your points are just. Though I would add that running up a spring mountain would be awesome. The dirt up to the mud, advancing to the snow, then the ice! This shoe would be awesome!
I have a question about this shoes... I purchased one and it is slightly tight in the toe area of my right foot when trying it at home. My question is... do they widen and losen a bit? Thank You ☺️
I think that shoe would be great in Michigan. We have buffed out Trails, but we also have a lot of ruts and loose dirt trails and mud, We don't have a lot of rocks in northern Michigan, More so in the up. I'm looking for a trail shoe right now. So im thankful for these reviews on trail shoes Seth!
I think they are for running in mud rather than on rocky trails. I use Salomon Fellraisers (similar lugs but lower drop) here in the UK in winter. It's all mud, no rocks and they work great for that. For rocky trails softer stickier lugs work better like Altra Superior.
Inov 8 trailroc 285s are waiting for me at my doorstep :-). For shorter trailraces, the rockplate for me is not really necessary, ground feel has priority, so I would take these over the speedcross. They seem pretty sweet for fell running as well.
I think this is a good choice for what I use speedcross for. Soft conditions, the rock is better with things like sense pro2 which has a better lug profile for rocks and has a protective plate.
Seth James DeMoor Are you still in the market for the Brooks Cascadia? I love the v12 so hopefully the v14’s are just as nice (or even better). I will try the NB as an extra pair but need to fit them first. Since the 1080 v9 road shoes NB impressed me 😃 maybe rebel or rincon for faster days so can’t wait for your reviews 👍🏻 Love your work. Happy to see you running again 🏃🏻♂️
QOD (yesterday) So a little late but I’m looking between the Speed cross and maybe the Dynafit Feline Up Pro. My trail shoes currently are the NB Heirro. They were great for the winter and spring but I used them as an approach shoe to Emperor Couloir (NW face of Torrey’s)on Friday and did not like them in the rougher terrain. Not the first time I’ve had this thought. I’ve tried on the Salmon’s in the past and really liked the fit. In fact I was going to get them but went with the NB because they were free. Is the Speed Cross a good all around trainer/racer for the Front Range? How do they compare to the S lab Sense or Ultra? Any thoughts on the Dynafit?
Using this in rocky, muddy terrain up my local mountain in Norway :) a bit "soft" because of the lack of a plate, so you feel the rock a bit. But the drop and outer sole, together with the lugs, and flexibility makes it a good versatile shoe for me. Also, I love salomons- maybe even more than you😂 have some XA Pro's, speedcross 3 and 4, and looking for a more everyday use shoes for sparetime as well :)
Hey, I was just wondering, bought them, fit well, but a bit tighter and the back is kinda digging into my achilles heel, so does it adjust to my foot? Or should I buy a bigger size? (Have a bit of space in the front of the shoe). Thanks a lot.
I’ve already got my Speedcross5 thanks to your awesone review.. I’m not sure I’m going for this.. Please do more miles with this in different trails! my next race will be an obstacle run..
Hey, I was just wondering, bought them, fit well, but a bit tighter and the back is kinda digging into my achilles heel, so does it adjust to my foot? Or should I buy a bigger size? (Have a bit of space in the front of the shoe). Thanks a lot.
Can you enighten us on the water-resistance of the shoe? You said that it helped in the mud, but can you please elaborate? I know its not goretex and thats the only minus when thinking of buying them, but overall, how was it in muddy terrains? And how would it be in snowy ones? Like for e.g if I run on a snowy trail, will my feet get wet?
Great info, but without the rock plate it's a pass for me especially where I trail run it's a must. Going to wait for the new color Speedcross 5's to come out soon to get my next two pairs. Spend a little more and just get the Speedcross 5's they're worth it. BTW campsaver or backcountry sometimes have sales on them. Nice to see you back testing.
PLATE - no not looking for any trail shoes right now - I have my stock of Altra Trail shoes for that and a backup Lone Peak 4 when the one I am wearing dies.. I am curious Seth - you do love the SpeedCross which also does not have a rock plate, is the extra cushioning enough to deal with the rocks. I would say similar to the speedcross it is built for muddy trails - although if I was looking for something like that I would spend the extra 20 bucks and get the speedcross 5s
Just purchased the new Topo MTN Racer. Haven't taken it out yet, but I love the Ultraventures, on which the MTN Racer is based. Would be great to see a review of a Topo shoe on here. In the realm of "foot-shaped" shoes, the Topos I've run in definitely surpass Altra in build quality and durability. I also prefer the Ultraventure's midfoot lockdown to the Timp 1.5, which always felt a little squirrely to me when running downhill.
I'm either going to pay the extra money for another pair of Speedcross 5's or wait until the new Altra Lone Peak comes out. I'm a lot heavier than you are and I don't think those would hold up for me. Keep up the great work!
Hey, I was just wondering, bought them, fit well, but a bit tighter and the back is kinda digging into my achilles heel, so does it adjust to my foot? Or should I buy a bigger size? (Have a bit of space in the front of the shoe, though). Thanks a lot.
I’m relatively new to road running and really want to get in to trail running. I’m about 90 minutes north of Seattle, so I think this one might work. I am certainly in the market for a good trail running shoe. I have an awesome pair of Solomon hiking shoes, so I’m leaning toward going with them for trail running too.
Kalenji Kiprun Trail MT will do the work. Best Trail Shoes.😁😁 if i purchase that supercross i think i'll just use that for training or for Hiking use only
I've always wanted to try Salomon, but the ones I've tried on are too narrow. I currently am running in Altra"s (timp 2), they kinda hurt my heels? I prefer Hoka's, but I don't like how they lace up and how they cut the circulation off around my ankles. I'm a hot mess!
Supercross. I have a pair of Challenger AT 4 from Hoka that are pretty good on the gravel and well formed trails but I’m looking at trying the new Speed Goat Or Stinson. Central highlands in Victoria has a variety of terrain....mud, clay, rock....gold mining country. I love having a heap of mid sole between me and the earth. It gives me an illusion of weightlessness and speed. It’s all in the mind of course. Any others I should look at?
I am a newbie in the running world. An I am looking to buy a trail shoe (love trial running and even running in my local parc)... would this be a good starting shoe for me? Is there any other considerations? Thank you people for your thoughts.

SUPERCROSS. Huh, I expected you to like them more. The rock plate issue is pretty major. Side note: I just bought my second pair of Turbos (v. 1). Most comfortable shoes I’ve ever owned. How does the Pegasus trail compare to the Turbo in the midsole?
Those neon blue are on sale for $66. I think I'll try a pair. From the shit state of Iowa. I have to step on a tree root. We don't have rocks in Iowa lol
Jim Duyck don’t get me wrong I love Nike as they fit my feet perfectly except for the trail versions, so you’re right to each his own. Ps Andy could race in converse and still do well. Lol.
Seth James DeMoor thanks for your reply. I actually made it to the Newton store in Boulder and they weren’t the right fit at all for my feet. Had heard great things, but too wide in the toe box. I know most people like that, but my feet are very narrow. They run $130. Went with the Salomon Ulta s/lab. 👍🏼
ROCK PLATE - inov8 trail shoes dont have rock plates in them, this is a deliberate design to increase ground contact feel. It makes it easier for the tread to make contact with the ground and therefore increases the grip. It also reduces weight massively. I feel the rocks when in inov8 but it is better than feeling nothing and being out of control in high stack height/rock plate shoes.

I use these shoes for golf. Amazing. Comfortable, lots of traction, and keep my feet dry. Look great on and off the course.
Honestly seems like a good shoe for obstacle course racing. Lugs for mud, lightweight for a racy feel. Price point for ocr bois...
