Mad Max 2 is nothing short of brilliant, astonishing and absolutely necessary, and it's all down to George Miller. More moments of perfectly executed film craft can be found in the first five minutes of any Mad Max film than in virtually every mainstream Hollywood action film of the last twenty years combined. Miller's comprehension of and efficacy with editing, pacing, timing, framing, composition, characterization, contextualization, narrative structure, and any number of other elementary aspects of film language is astounding. Whenever you hear someone say "They don't make them like this anymore," they're talking about films like the Mad Max trilogy. Mad Max, Jaws, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Blade Runner, The Thing, Aliens... they don't make them like this anymore. But thank god George Miller does. Miller’s Mad Max films are cinema at its finest, at its most resplendent, glorious, and awe inspiring.

Mark Spada Fantastic thoughts on what makes this film so amazing!

It's a bit hyperbolic, I admit. But with these films I can't help it but feel that it's warranted. :)

Mark Spada What is even more amazing to me is that, 20+ years after the last installment of Mad Max, Miller managed to come up with a sequel that still thrilled in Fury Road without one inch of compromise in preserving the original integrity of what came before. That's a Hollywood miracle.

I agree. There is something that you just can’t put your finger on about this movie series. And yes when I think about it I get kind of a fairytale mystical feeling about it like I did with Star Wars. I enjoyed your analysis of it because it sort of quantified why it is rather mystical to me. I found Even the minor characters really interesting like the helicopter guy and the child etc. after I watch the road warrior movie are even had this strange desire to travel to Australia. I can’t really say why because I know that this is a work of fiction. Ultimately it might be that this movie makes me interested in Australian people who are really on the other side of the world and so alone. They must be really strong to be so alone. I noticed everything that has come out of Australia is very brilliant like mad Max Mill Gibson Nicole Kidman and countless other actors and films. Australia is sort of the new land of Oz.

"My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. But most of all, I remember the road warrior, the man we called Max.
To understand who he was we have to go back to the other time, when the world was powered by the black fuel and the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel - gone now, swept away. For reasons long forgotten two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. Cities exploded - a whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men.
On the roads it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice, and in this maelstrom of decay ordinary men were battered and smashed - men like Max, the warrior Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything and became a shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again."
--Opening Monologue, Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior

Well said! Love the Road Warrior. It's my favourite Mad Max film because of that weird blend of realism and the fantastic.

+Calico Matt Thanks! I love the balance between the two in this film. Mad Max is much more grounded and both Thunderdome and Fury Road are much more fantastical. Not there's anything wrong with that, but Road Warrior has that great blend of the two.

The Road Warrior is poetic. The story is timeless. There was no need for the follow ups. The Road Warrior is the perfect finale in the saga of Mad Max.

We have a theatre system in our spare room; surround sound and a subwoofer.
The audio is so crisp, bassy and loud that I can always tell my dad is watching mad max because the engine sounds literally shake the house.

If I could make one critique, the background serves to transition from clip to clip but it is sometimes distracting because it is always moving. Just a thought. Great video!

Thanks for your feedback! I've been playing around with backgrounds. In the future I may get rid of the bokeh and reduce them more so they are less distracting in general.

I like the unsaid thinking between two adversaries also in a post nuclear world I don’t think there’s much else to do not like your going to work or school the next day right I think it also it illustrates the loss of language and culture over time and turn into feral heathens or keep some sort of society what a complex movie about society this movies complicated brilliance my all time fav this just rocks

Respectfully, You misunderstood Max's whole character ark! He does display multiple signs of humanity and proves himself to be a deeper character than he would appear. One thing he never does, however, is change! He goes full circle at best. He agreed to drive that tanker because he had no choice. His reaction at the end indicates, that he didn't know the tanker was filled with sand, and he feels betrayed! Should it carry fuel, the tanker would have been priceless. But it turned out to be just a decoy. And everybody on it was expendable! Watch Papagallo's body language throughout the film. Notice how reluctant he is to take that role of the driver. And how easily he agrees to give up the position despite Max's injuries.

Solid video essay, compelling and interesting. But with respect, you got it completely wrong.
At no point does Max "change". At every point in the movie, every choice he makes is for his own benefit. He doesnt have some moment where he's suddenly enlightened and returns to humanity. He is a survivor, and every choice he makes is for that sole purpose. He knows these people are dead. He knows that the truck will get overrun and everyone on it killed. And he's right. He offers to drive it because he has no other choice.

This f'kn movie is my Jesus Christ. I think I was 13 when I first saw this and I've been disturbed ever since. Do what's right, no matter what. Injustice anywhere, is injustice everywhere. Think Globally, act locally... no punishment, no torture, no death sentence has ever deterred a good soldier, from doing the right thing.
