19:52 The reviews
I have been binge watching Siskel and Ebert episodes a lot over the past year of the pandemic.
It is like comfort food for me. I so miss this time period before the internet. So many great movies from the 80s and 90s. I really miss watching this show every Sunday evening as a teen in the 90s. I was really into movies then and would see most of the top films each year. I always bought Rogers movie review book too he was such a great writer.
Richard Roeper was a good replacement for Siskel when he passed away but it was never quite the same. Roeper I think looked up to Ebert professionally and was younger so they never really went at it and teased each other like these two who were more like competing colleagues the same age.
Well said i love Siskel and Ebert too they inspired me to become a film critic myself
I agree 100% .on each of your points. Alot of their conceptual prophecies on society have come to pass as well.
This show was one of the highlights of my weekend and I rarely missed it. Even if I disagreed with their reviews I always enjoyed their animated debates. RIP fellas, you’re both definitely missed! And BTW I’m binge-watching them now.
Yeah, Richard was different than Gene due to his being younger, but he did some good things with Roger so the show was still good. But watching Gene and Roger is the best due to their long running show that built up over the years (they weren't successful originally) and watching them talk about films, praising and dumping on them, plus dealing with important film issues, like the ratings system and colorization. Who does that today?
I love this show!! Does tht make me a dork? ...smile
I watched kindergarten cop as a little kid and loved it then and still love it to this day. "On second thought.. take the gun. "
haha Pamela Reed was awesome in this.
"ITS NOT A TUMOR."
@kuarentakilla863IT’S NAHT-A TUMA!!
Everytime when I’m at work I think of the quote there is no bathroom from this movie.
Boy, were they both right on target on Bonfire. The book was an exhilarating ride into unfamiliar territory filled with interesting, compelling characters. It was unbelievable what the movie did to that great story.
Read about the making of the film and you'll be entertained. It's called The Devil's Candy.
Kindergarten Cop is an underrated classic.
"Its not a tumor."
"You mean you eat other people's lunches?"
nope. gimmicky trash
@@theessentials450 LMFAO. Since when? By what standard?
@@LukeLovesRose Good taste. It's made for unfunny children.
Underrated? I like the movie but it was a big hit and most people enjoy it. I think it's rated fairly.
Garcia repeating “Right?!” to Mantegna is hilarious 😀
😂😂😂 Yeah it is
I love it too.
It's nice to hear them highlight the good things about Godfather 3. Of course it's nowhere close to as good as 1 and 2. And yes, it has some cringe. But it is still compelling on the whole and a far above average crime drama. Let go of the lofty expectations of 1 and 2 and enjoy it for what it is.
R.I.P Siskel, Ebert and now Sean Connery.
And also John le Carré (who wrote The Russia House)
@@mikew1507 Tom Hanks was also in Joe vs the Volcano when he did that Tom Wolfe film. Bruce Willis was also in the second Die Hard. When he did that film as well.
And Eli Wallach.
How did I not know that Sean Connery died?
And now Ivan Reitman, the director of Kindergarten Cop, Twins, Stripes, Ghostbusters and Dave.
this show was my childhood
Godfather 3 isn't as good as first two but still worth watching. 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟
Kindergarten cop is good comedy thriller that it work just the way it is, even it's inappropriate kids to see. 👍🌟🌟🌟
I agree with Ebert i think people were too harsh on Sofia. Ok she wasnt a great actress. But its been 30 years and since then she has become a great director
She also has an Oscar for her screenplay for Lost in Translation.
I loved Kindergarten Cop and still do!
Russia House is one of my favorite movies. Like Gene, I love all the dialogue.
I just thought Sophia couldn't act plain and simple.
I tuned in to see a fairly even handed review of Kindergarten Cop. Kids can't appreciate themselves as being adorable or heartwarming so the only parts that really matter are the conflict, though Gene Siskel is right that it's tougher as an adult to take those gut-punch moments.
Kindergarten Cop is a movie that objectively is probably a 6/10. But my enjoyment of it is easily 9.5/10. 😁
I love “The Russia house”! Sean Connery is incomparable!
Biggest liability of Godfather 3? Every critic said Sofia Coppola. I saw the film in the theater, I still liked it.
My mother told me when she saw it in theaters (I was still but oh, a few months old) it was a packed house and when Sofia Coppola came onto the screen and you realized she was the leading lady of the movie, there was a like an entire gasp shared by all the audience members at once. Make that of what you will.
@@Javithegothi2.5.90 Very polite audience that.
Just to remind everyone - she's that film's opposite number to Bridget Fonda. Garcia's playboy Vincent chooses director's talentless mumbler of a teenage daughter over Bridget Fonda.
I've loved "The Godfather III" since I first saw it at the theater back in 1990. Pacino's performance was terrific.
I loved the scene in Bonfire at the end where Hanks has that sinister smile on his face while playing the tape recording.
Kindergarten Cop is one of my favorite Arnold movies. This is definitely not a kids movie some scenes might frighten little kids.
Godfather 3 has the unenviable task of being compared to the first two films. I think everyone pretty much understands that. The biggest mistake was casting George Hamilton instead of Robert Duvall. Replacing one of the greatest actors of all time, with a man best known for tanning is moronic.
They wanted Duvall, but they would not pay what Duvall thought would be appropriate compensation.
Sofia Coppola was terrible and Diane Keaton was under baked in GF3. Not worthy of the previous version 2 films. Should have stopped at GF2. As Coppola said - they story was finished with Michael sitting in that chair after he killed Fredo.
Most of Coppola's output of the 80's and 90's was made because he desperately needed the money. That's why he did this stinker and that turd called Jack.
@@ricardocantoral7672 Everything is made to make money dimwit.
@@TobeyStarburst You think Coppola's best work was the result of his desire to make money ? The dimwit here is you.
Miss them RIP 👍🏿🙏🏿❤️
Kindergarten Cop kicks the guts off to Godfather 3 without any doubt. And yes, Sofia Coppola was a mistake...30 years later she's still a mistake in the History of cinema
The godfather 3 is still way better than anything that’s made these days.
Actually Sofia was cast in that role in the first Godfather movie.
Correct. She was the baby in the baptism scene.
I enjoyed/still enjoy Godfather III. It's a great movie. Is it an incredible movie like I & II? Of course not. Yes, Sofia Coppola is awful in it, and not particularly attractive but Andy Garcia carries her scenes. The Vatican plot is convoluted and needed its own movie to explain what was going on. Cramming it all into this movie was a mistake. It's Francis Ford Coppola's vision. We can second guess him, but he put in all the time, effort, and money to make it.
I love Roger but he was so wrong about Sofia Coppola.
The first 15 minutes of bonfire of the vanities has poor acting but after that it's good and I was invested in the story and themes. It's underrated
David S. Pumpkins' wife is in the beginning, notice?
I miss these guys!
Sofia looks amazing in it. Not average looking at all
As a kid my 3 favs were ninja turtles, hook n kindergarten cop. Spent lots of time in the vcr
Al Pacino murdered the Michael Corleone character in the first 30 minutes of the movie.
Have you seen the new cut that Coppola did The Death Of Michael Corleone its much better
7:36 gene was about to say "look who he's Fing around with" lol
Roger is correct about Sofia. The HATE she got was 100% wrong and evil
Not evil. She wasn’t good. Just overblown.
She is was fine especially as her first acting gig
I guess hate by definition is evil but…evil? Can’t she just get flak and it not mean hatred? She just not a good actress, from that example. I’d say Jake Lloyd as a helpless kid got genuine hate for Phantom Menace. That was mob mentality right there on his little 10 year old ass :/
I’ll argue she’s an ok actress not terrible
She shouldn't have been casted
The incestuous relationship between Mary Corleone and Vincent was messed up, no matter what
No, it wasn't that. Were they first cousins?
@@sha11235 Yeah
Francis = amazing director
Bonfire of the Vanities is a flawed adaptation of a wonderful novel. Hanks and Willis were miscast and it might’ve been a bit better if they just switched roles
How often is Godfather Part 3 considered 'the cream of the crop?'
Only among this group of movies.
Damn they ripped Bruce Willis in this review. He literally said "a lump of dead space" to describe this performance 😄
He was miscast. He shouldn't have taken the role.
The Godfather 3 just doesn't work for me. I didn't like the way they took the story. Pacino overacts and doesn't even seem like Michael anymore.
The film sorely misses Robert Duvall. They were too cheap to hire him. They offered Pacino 5 million and Duvall 1 million. He said he didn't expect the same as Pacino but he would have done it for 2 million.
Pacino was weird to me in this movie. As if he did not remember how to play Michael. He either looked incredibly bored and lifeless and at other times overreacting. He was never convincing in this movie(with maybe the exception of when he confessed his sins to the priest). I don't know if that was his choice or not because around that time I remember seeing him in other movies and he was much better in them whether it was City Hall or Glengary Glenross or Scent of a Woman.
As far as the story yea I understand why they tried to do like Michael wants to get out and repent and events prevent that from happening. But there wasn't much else to it when you dig deeper.
@@johnnyskinwalker4095 Totally Agree. The haircut he had didn't work for me either. Ha. I just didn't like the way they took the story I guess with the vatican.
Although I agree the confession scene hit hard and seemed real to me. Not much else is very memorable for me. Godfather and Godfather 2 are both top ten of all time IMO.
Sofia Coppola had no business being in that movie or any movie! 🤣
You are right. Specially the "movies" she made
I'm in the minority but I like Godfather 3 a lot. Definitely missing Duvall and Sophia is horribly miscast. Why they didn't just make Bridget Fonda the love interest is perplexing. Oh, and in an even bigger minority, I love Bonfire of the Vanities.
Because he wasn't the directors kid. Sophia is really the worst part of the movie.
VEEEEEERY BIG minority on bonfire
Godfather III was a bloated bore and the film desperately needed Robert Duvall.
And Al Pacino himself forgot who he was playing.
@@MrAitraining Best incidental comedy of the trilogy is Michael's stroke.
I agree. The studio flat out refused to pay Duvall what he was asking. They should've just ponied up the dough.
Especially in comparison to Goodfellas which came out months before this movie, which isn't bad it has some merits but it's not anything special in comparison to the first two movies.
Robert Duvall is a bloated bore.
Praise the LORD! Please pray for me Nathan, my health and my family in JESUS NAME Amen.
@Nathan Doden - 5 months have passed ... has your health / family gotten better ... in JESUS NAME ??
@@warriormanmaxx8991 Just needing prayer. Going through a lot. Thank you. God bless you.
I think you are taking these from the website, right? RIGHT????? to quote Andy Garcia from Godfather 3.
A shame Bonfire of the Vanities sucks with that amazing cast.
The Godfather Part III 👍 3 stars out of 4
Kindergarten Cop 👍 3 stars out of 4
The Russia House 👍 3 stars out of 4
The Bonfire of the Vanities 👍 2 & a half stars out of 4
My reviews: out of 5
1 " The Godfather Part III " 3.5 out of 5
2 " Kindergarten Cop " 3 out of 5
3 " The Bonfire of the Vanities " 2.5 out of 5
4 " The Russia House " 2.5 out of 5
Al Pacino is a one note actor ?
You got a Coppola and De Palma film and the Kindergarten Cop is better than either of them
Lol, sad, but true. I think De Palma got in over his head. But to his credit, he 100% owned the failure of Bonfire of the Vanities. He admits he wrecked the movie by messing with the formula too much.
Young Sophia Coppola was hot.
Why don't they remake Bonfire?
@@Bot23 Why don't you?
@@Bot23 why don't I?
@@Bot23 I've never seen it.
It would be interesting now in the context of all the riots of last summer. Although it would have to be a major undertaking to adapt it related to these events.
@@Bot23 I could if I was a director.
@6:30 I disagree with him on her looks, I think she's attractive
She is attractive...but not as an actress or director...just as a good looking woman and nothing more
Watched Kindergarten Cop when I was 6. Guess it corrupted me.
Which movie?
A fair review of GF3? Weird.
It's hard to turn a great novel into even a decent movie. Fight Club may be a rare case when the film was better. Take Clockwork Orange, as great as that movie is, and it is great, the novel blows it out of the water.
Yep, generally true but as you say there are exceptions: my pick would be The Shining
Either version of Scarface is better than the novel which has not held up with age.
I would say there are a few exceptions where the film is better than the book, my pick being The Hunt For Red October. Great book, but for me, the film is much better
There are a lot of good novels turned into good/great movies. But you need a good director. Off the top of my head, Silence from Marin Scorcese comes to mind. That was great. Last Temptation of Christ. Dune.. Arrival too. Gone Girl… The list goes on.
@@samuelbarber6177 Peter Benchley's novel Jaws is really good but the movie is a masterpiece.
I LOVED Kindergarten Cop...sorry guys
So… Ebert clearly had a thing for 19 year old Sofia Coppola. 🙄
Russia House is fantastic. Hard disagree with Ebert here
I don't think k hee performance is that bad...until the end when she literally can't play dead.
She wasn’t supposed to be in the film. Winona Ryder was originally cast and would’ve done just fine in that role
Never liked Godfather part 3.
At least ok Simpson died 2 days ago .. this comment was made on April 16 2024 .. reply back in few years with an interesting news
Godfather 3 sucked farts out of dead seagulls!
And your comment lacks what the Godfather trilogy has in abundance:
Class.
Sophia Coppola is a better director than she is an actress.
Sophia Coppola maybe. SOFIA Coppola is not a good actress and not a good director and nothing
Andy Garcia, a Cuban, is very unbelievable as an Italian (I know Cubans and Italians and have nothing against any of them. Garcia has just never done anything for me in any role he plays). Also, the movie was at least an hour longer than it should have been.
I haven't seen part 3 didn't know he hooked up with his cousin tho
idiot

Kindergarten cop was not a good movie.
Was funnier and more entertaining than Godfather 3
