Dr Weening’s facial expressions are the bomb! Glad you weren’t hurt after your tumble, Dr. Zalzal. I have hardwood floors throughout my home and I always wear something on my feet when using the stairs - never sock feet only. And I hang onto the railing. Never thought I’d see the day, but here we are.

I had a bad fall walking across a NYC street and tripping over the edge of a steel plate. Because my hands were in my coat pockets I could not break my fall. Landed on my face, and broke my orbital above the left eye. When walking, keep your hands out of your pockets!❤️

My mother used to say, "Lift your feet!" Keep floors and surfaces tidy. Take time when you stand up to get your balance before you start walking or turning. Shoes with good traction for walking outdoors. Don't walk through snow. Take your time getting out of a vehicle, if you have to step down. Make sure your foot is positioned to land flat when stepping off a curb or step, or out of a car.

As I’ve written re past videos, for a 77yo male, my wife and I are extremely active, biking, hiking, backpacking….. I had a systemic MRSA infection nine years ago that coalesced in my lumbar spine and psoas leaving me paralyzed but through a year of therapy and daily activities I regained my ability to walk, run and hike. I have noticed over time that the residual neuropathy has left me with some nerve deficit in my toes and I’ve taken a couple of face plants due to the lack of sensation when I snag a toe on a rock or root while on the trail.
We use hiking sticks on the trails but a caution there is to not get tangled up in the sticks. We’ve had at least three friends using hiking sticks and using the loops on the handles, and when they have fallen, being tied to the sticks has resulted in broken wrists.
We have tried our best to maintain strength, work on our core strength, balance and flexibility, so we can continue our outdoor adventures. Thanks! for your continued great informative videos.

I have had several falls during my lifetime, most recently due to my drop foot condition. The gold nugget in this video for me is "learning how to fall". I took Judo as a teenager, and learned how to properly fall without an injury. This has helped me greatly as I matured.

I wish they had further discussed that topic. How does one learn how to fall? I’m a senior citizen and walk with a cane. I have had many falls due to having bad knees from a car accident 15 years ago. The last fall I had messed up my rotator cuffs too. Was told if I fall again my rotator cuffs could require surgery.
Doctors: please do a video on how one goes about learning “how to fall properly.”

For seniors…Pick Up Your Feet! Don’t shuffle along. I feel that isn’t said enough. If you have a medical reason for not picking up you feet, that’s fine. I believe many just forget to take steps. I’m 73 and I try to watch where I’m stepping. It’s not 100%, but it helps. Thank you for the video and glad you weren’t hurt.

    • @ronaldgarrison8478
      @ronaldgarrison8478 5 месяцев назад +4

Don't shuffle-excellent advice. I can speak from a certain amount of experience. About 4 to 5 years ago, I had three falls within about a one-year period. I could remember how they happened. It was always very sudden. One thing I can say: It usually isn't a balance issue; at least it wasn't for me. It's usually a muscle issue. Muscles respond sluggishly. You shuffle a bit. And when you do, your center of gravity starts creeping out ahead of your feet. When that happens, if anything catches your feet, even a little, it's very hard to recover your upright position. You may feel exactly what is happening, but you can't stop it, especially as it all happens in a second or two.
Watch where you're walking, and where there could be obstacles. Step decisively. Don't shuffle. And don't wear floppy shoes.
George Burns lived to, I think, 101. He might not have looked like that athletic a guy. But he was a dancer, from way back. Dancers are very expert in controlling their body movements, and they don't usually let gravity get the better of them. Hey, life is a dance as much as anything.

My husband had Parkinson's so it wasn't his fault that he didn't lift up his feet. Keep that in mind. Shuffling can be a symptom of an illness so don't criticise people who do so.
      Edited to add:
He passed away on December 23rd, and had several falls despite all our efforts to prevent them. I myself tripped over a paving stone while turning off the sprinkler in our back garden in 2014 and broke my shoulder falling against a basement window well. 6 weeks in a cast and sleeping sitting up. However, that fall led to me being diagnosed with stage 3 NH Lymphoma so we called that accident my lucky break since it inadvertently saved my life and gave me another 10 years of existence. Too much condescension here in my opinion. We aren't all senile and in need of further exhortation beyond that already given in the video by our two friendly physicians. Yes, it annoyed me.

    • @ronaldgarrison8478
      @ronaldgarrison8478 3 месяца назад +1

@@Beruthiel45 It's not about criticism. Shuffling is a common pattern you can easily get into as you get older. I'm attuned to this precisely because I've noticed this tendency in myself. You need to resist it as much as possible, and of course, if you can't fully do so, then you need to take other steps (to pound on that metaphor some more) to mitigate the effects somehow, including the effects if you do nevertheless fall.

Dr. Zalzal you’re a rock star for sharing the “fall” video. I fell (8 years ago) walking quickly (why the heck was I in a hurry) barefoot, between our lino and hardwood flooring. Typical “3 stooges fall”, airborne and almost simultaneously landed on my wrist and tailbone; broke my wrist. A rather humbling experience for a stubborn independent individual (me). Still amazed to this day how that even happened. I am so mindful now of balance, gait, what’s in my path and try to pay attention. An ounce of prevention ….

Very kind of Dr Paul to donate this video. He knows an awful lot about this case. He nearly laughed. In the end gravity always wins. In the meantime life errr, finds a way, as noted by Jeff Goldblum in Jurassic Park. I have noticed as I get older that I can be walking along minding my own business and suddenly I am heading toward the ground and unless you do something quick, it comes at you and hits you with a big thump. It is most likely the beginning of something bad as I have terrible balance and most likely I have a brain tumor or dementia or multiple sclerosis on the way but it is not worth getting it checked out because the NZ medical system works like you taking your car in for new spark plugs and they just replace one and send you home with 5 others that need replacing.

When I started taking hockey lessons, the first thing we learned was how to fall on the ice. It was a crumpling motion so that you’re landing on muscle as much as possible. Landing on your forearm rather than your hand. Trying to stop the fall made things worse. Instead, we taught our bodies how to have the memory of how to fall without injury. The same with being checked into the boards or fighting for the puck. You learn how to do it to avoid injuries.

Great video. Thank you. I always appreciate the humor you bring to your audience with your didactic information. As a physical therapist, I have to say that the primary reason my patients fall as they get older is they don’t dorsiflex enough. They’re older the muscles are older and weaker, and sometimes they don’t automatically, lift their toes and foot up to clear the ground and then they find themselves on the ground. I try to focus on my patient concentrating on a good heel strike, which makes them have to lift their toes up to strike on their heels. Just an addition to what you were saying. Take it for it’s worth. Again thanks for all your information and all your ideas. The dock on the right side of the video is always smiling and looks like he’s a funny force to deal with and that’s nice. You’re both great but I appreciate his ‘impishness’ :-)

I've missed the last step on a flight of stairs in my home, because it was too dim and I thought it was the bottom so reached my foot out further on the floor, thus falling because there was one more step. I also now only use ladders with extra wide steps and always check if I'm at the bottom. Yup, fell because I reached out further with my foot thinking I was on the bottom step. I've also jarred my body missing a step without falling. Not good for my body.

12 weeks ago I went for a short walk with my dog on a trail close to home,,,and I DID NOT PROPERLY TIE MY HIKING BOOTS.... so now I have ORIF left radius with a titanium plate and 9 screws and fractured ulnar stylus floating around. I had only laced my boots half way up, leaving long loops that got tangled on the opposite boot hooks as I ran down a hill. Always properly tie your shoes.

We do not wear our outside shoes in the house, but I have learned that socks and stairs are a bad combination (don't ask😮) slippers were not much better. I started purchasing cheap tennis shoes that are as comfortable as any slipper but much safer for me. Plus, they make me look sporty.

A few years back I had a nasty fall. Didn't trip over anything, completly flat ground. My body just decided to lunge forward and use my head as a battering ram against concrete. And no, alcohol was not involved. I landed on my left eyebrow and fortunately I did not break my frontal bone. No pain, no concussion just alot of bleeding. The cut was miniscule, but kept pouring blood. I still have a dent in my forehead from the fall. Wish I could post the pics, quite amusing.

Perfect Dr. Zal Zal. You did a good one. How about you are a person who has limited feeling in their feet? I used to have numbness in just my right foot and depended on my left to feel what’s underneath. NOW, I have 2 numb feet and my falls are more frequent. I know why the right is numb, but the left is something for me to check into . That’s a great video and I’m sure it will help a lot of people you tumble.

People need to have clear paths in their homes- not clutter. Throw rugs are very bad as they flip over so you can trip. Shoes, umbrellas, etc. put back in a reliable place. Have a good place to take "wet-shoes" off so you won't slip.... I can go on Drs........ I worked on the hardest floor in the hospital & let you guess- ha ha. Take care, love your videos 🥰

I did hear him say “I” as well 😁 I haven’t finished watching the video yet, but I will. I slipped on a melted piece of ice in my kitchen and did a hurdle split three months ago, ripping off three hamstring tendons from the bone. Two months ago, I had them surgically reattached. What a long recovery road this is.😭 The lesson I learned no more bare feet or socks in my house. From now on, I will use non-skid slippers.

I'm so glad you were NOT hurt Dr. Z!! 🙂I have fallen several times before and after both hip replacements. One thing I did to keep from falling after my first hip replacement, I removed all rugs in the house. Since the hip and knees are/were messed up, I didn't raise my feet as high as I should, so I tripped over rugs several times. Also keep all electrical cords behind furniture or at least, away from the main walking area. I couldn't agree more, watch where you/we step and don't look at the phone!!!!! Fortunately, my head isn't a vital organ, so I strive to protect my hands too!!! 🙂

As a nurse for years we caught blame for falls within the nursing facilities with all our interventions in place, we were held to account. Turns out many (geriatric patients) had weak bones if not porous in nature. I never heard a doctor blame nurses for falls that said the state have. Vit d3 I believe helps enormously.

So glad you are OK, Dr. Zalzal!
I've had far too many falls.
Some total accidents -- like falling down stairs while holding a baby, thought of nothing but protecting Baby's head, and sprained both ankles.
Others because of jobs I've had -- walking an unfamiliar student who has autism to the bus at the end of the day, student "drops", and to avoid stepping on student, I twisted myself so the next step wasn't on student's face, long knee recovery there.
And some from being an idiot -- decided to "twirl" like my student who twirled constantly. Instantly dixzy, and down I went, landing with my fist jammed into my sternum and ribs. TWO MONTHS I was out of work for that!
Could you please cover what to do to help yourself if you've had a bad fall and are alone without your phone? Like, how precisely is the best way to get yourself to a chair?

When falling, rather than trying to break the fall (and risk a wrist or forearm fracture) try to roll so that the impact is spread/diffused over a large area rather than concentrated on a small area like the wrist.

The more I tried to “race” to get my legs back under myself when I was going down after tripping, the more momentum was achieved and I went pretty much airborne and landed directly on my shoulder on garage floor and broke my shoulder..I should have just fallen once I tripped , and let my items fall from my arms! Maybe I could have avoided a broken shoulder. It happened so fast but I definitely learned from it!!

Dogs can also be a cause for falls. Usually not caused by their owner/doc looking at them 😂 but if they get right under your feet and you are not watching you could trip over them. My dog pulled me down while I was holding his leash. He saw a squirrel and took off while I had my head turned so he caught me off guard. Broke my front tooth, busted my lip, and I had road rash on my face from falling on the concrete. That happened about 6 years ago and I still have the dog. It wasn't his fault, he was doing what dogs do, chasing things.
Wet feet especially after a shower can be another problem area. Older people might trip over a bathmat but the slippery floor is not good either. Fell on my knee when I slipped on the bathroom floor while getting out of the shower. I could write a book of what not to do 😂

"Lol. It looked like YOU!" Seriously though. I have fallen a few times and they were at night from a curb that I could not see and I was wearing high wedged boots and another time when I was carrying a heavy load and walking up stairs. (I actually fell up.) Let me add that compounded with the stairs and heavy load, I was also exhausted from stress.
I have since ceased to wear high wedged shoes and rarely carry heavy loads of things. Knock wood.

I know it seems overkill but a plan to identify any of those contributory factors is very important, especially for us older folks (not to imply the person who fell is old, but I am). Multitasking is not only overrated, but more unsafe the older I get. Good video. I sent it to my spouse's phone because she she just suffered two falls requiring ER visits and stitches. The first was a fall from a step stool while trying to carry a load of stuff to place it on top of the refrigerator. She fell on to some plastic bins removed from the old refrigerator that were on the floor. The second, just a few days later, she was carrying a fragile device trying to step over our cat blocking the way. She ended up falling on the fragile device breaking it into many pieces. Both avoidable.

I absolutely love your channel, and the Docs have been a source of my regular RUclips education and 'refreshing content' for a while now. I ask that the editor of the thumbnail post a photo of the surgeon not smiling, because it is juxtaposed against the elderly man falling down and it doesn't approriately match the seriousness of this issue. Thank you so much for the consideration.
