    The fact that Mr. Llewelyn passed away in real life shortly after TWINE’s release makes this scene even more emotionally charged. Brilliant actor! His scenes as Q were always a joy to watch! The mutual affection between him and Bond was obvious.

    Bond (Brosnan) was genuinely saddened that Q was retiring. For all their verbal jousting, Q and Bond had a great friendship and affection for one another. This scene was in truth quite a poignant one, as it marked Desmond Llewellyn's final appearance as the curmudgeonly genius Q. Nobody did it better. Considering that Llewellyn died shortly aftet the film's release, I can't help but wonder if somehow he knew he would be leaving us.

    Out of all the things that Q (Desmond Llewelyn) gave Bond, all the years of gadgets - some useful, some not, all the camaraderie, the love/hate relationship, the innuendo, the queen and country mantra...the most serious piece of advice (which we, as an audience, were never privy to,) was "never let them see you bleed." Q also laughed in Goldeneye when said "Along the rest of him," as a response to 007's "The writings on the wall?"

    The evolution of the characters was great. Desmond Llewelyn was the only Q, he was there in From Russia With Love, with the best Bond ever, Sean Connery, all the way to the second best in Pierce Brosnan. Over 40 years. And as Q got older, and the various Bonds all stayed (roughly) the same age, Q evolved from a co-worker, to a beloved and respected father figure. One we were ALL heartbroken to lose, because there won't be one like him, ever again.

    I want to believe that this is probably Desmond Llewelyn's favorite interaction with Bond, since he looks like he was having a delightful time and he also had a pretty cool sign-off. Sad that this was his final performance as Q. RIP Desmond Llewelyn

    18 Bond films. From Russia With Love all the way to The World is Not Enough. Desmond owned this role. John did what he could and did the part well for Die Another Day. A theory I saw in a different form that could explain the constantly changing faces of Bond(in most of the franchise) is that James Bond became a legend identity. Connery's Bond would be the original 007, and each one afterward took on the identity to keep the legend alive, with the original coming back in Diamonds Are Forever. Makes things easier for the missions. A nearly immortal operative that no enemy truly knows the original face of. Just a fun thought.

      @ch4z_bucks 6 месяцев назад

      This theory kinda falls apart though as each bond references the other to some extent. Lazenby reminiscing on Bond's missions when he leaves MI6 in OHMSS, Connery going out for revenge in the beginning of Diamonds are Forever, Moore getting uncomfortable at the mention of Teresa in The Spy Who Loved Me. For Dalton and Brosnan, Q mentions having worked with Bond for a long time, Die Another Day has a massive reference to Connery Bond when Brosnan asks if the jetpack from thunderball still works. Dalton Bond also had a very strong friendship with Felix Leiter that wouldn't make as much sense if it was multiple agents who'd taken the same name over the years.

      @ch4z_bucks I said it was a theory in a different form. With each new Bond actor comes changes to the continuity. If the franchise were a continuous thing from the start, something like the theory I mentioned could work. Not exactly, but a form of it.
