Hmm, tbh, I never liked the Gravelking SK and this looks a little bit more usable to me but I doubt that it'll be able to replace my go to tire which is the WTB Resolute (the light rolling one). That has been the only tire so far which was able to cope with any weather/temperature and street conditions I could throw at it.
I mentioned this in the review, and this will depend on your body weight, with me between 160 to 165lb. 18psi front, and up to 20psi rear, on the 45mm size.
@@GravelCyclist that's very low, even for your body weight, for a 45 tire. Every tire would feel comfortable at such low pressure. It is a bit concerning if they require such low pressure to feel supple
Most people would probably be satisfied with mid to high 20's, but I prefer lower on these. No burping issues, no bottoming out, no dead feeling. Freely admit I enjoy tinkering. Tyre reviews are subjective, these X1 / X1 R's may feel amazing to you at 28psi.
Has anyone had any trouble with tires that are very tight to mount Hookless rims ? I have a pair of continental terra speeds , and I just to run a TPU tube in it temporarily and try to remount it and I spent an hour going nowhere trying to get that last bead to seats her to go actually up into the rim. They are very tight fit. Maybe they’re not the right tires for this type of wheel. I’m wondering if these X1s are better choice ? or maybe the problem is Hook list carbon wheels that don’t grab the bead I don’t know. I’m very cautious now about trying another brand although the Pathfinder pros I had no problem with mounting them.
Running some of the new SS tyres in 35mm for my road wheels. Bit of a pain to get on the rims, but seating with a floor pump was no issue. Running tubless and zero issues after 300km of suspect roads and bridleways. Will probably get the X1 when my Goodyear connectors wear out on the gravel wheels.
I really like these, have them on my Gravel bike and my Single Speed….they are a bit stubborn to get on, and seat, but I got it down after doing the first pair. I have the regular 40mm in brown sidewalls, I’m 6’2” and 200 pounds, and run them about 32-35psi for gravel and off road and around 38-40psi for road rides, they feel great to me.

I find myself running lower pressure than I would normally, but I roll faster and more comfortably. For the price I think these are a great tire to have.
@@GravelCyclist I'm 61 Kgs. With the 38s I was running 33/38 psi. With the 45s I mainly use 25/30 psi. But recently I've been experimenting with 23/28 psi.
@@GravelCyclist just won my first gravel race. Ran 22/27. Route was mostly C2 gravel, but there were chunky deep sections that brought down a few riders. Then there was the 3 miles of deep sand........

Just a new gravelrider here but I've replaced my stock Schwalbe G-Ones 40mm for these (X1+ 40mm) and they seem much faster and grippier. I might upgrade to a 45mm set for the winter when it's a bit muddier on my tracks.
Hello there, and welcome. Generally for muddier conditions, you desire a narrower tyre to cut through the mud. For the stickiest of mud, which depends on where you ride, the Panaracer EXT tyre is my go to for such conditions.

Doesn’t sound like you have any concerns with sidewall durability in the X1 R? I came from loving Tufo Gravel Thundero and while the X1 R sidewall seems slightly thinner to the touch when uninstalled, the ride quality is at least equal IMO. I have only about 100 miles on my set and so far and they ride great on local gravel and pavement (for their size). 45 measures 48 on my 25.5 mm ID rims
Hello there, no concerns with sidewall durability. With that said, if I was expecting terrain at say an event where sidewall cuts from rocks, flint, and so on was a known issue, I would likely run the X1. I was a little remiss in measuring inflated volume as you did (thank you), or at least including it in the video. Like you, I found with the three rims I rode with inner diameters of 23 to 25mm, I gained at least 2mm of freebie width, which is usually a nice bonus.

I’ve now transitioned to gravel riding and have been using WTB products for my tires of choice. Any chance of you doing a review on their products?

Have you ever tried slick, large volume (e.g. >40 mm), lightweight casing tires on pavement and packed down mud? Am curious to know how fast they are compared to a road tire.
Love my X1 700x40c. Had some difficulty getting it on the rim, no problems setting up tubeless with only a basic floor pump. Super fast with good control and no punctures yet.
I rode the 700x43 Gravel King SK tires for many years. However, I switched to the 700x47 Specialized Pathfinder Pro tires and I won't be going back to the GK SK's. The Pathfinder's roll much faster, are more comfortable, are dead silent on pavement, and they don't throw tiny bits of gravel like the GK SK's.
No disrespect intended to you, Mark. I only ever heard complaints of tiny gravel being chucked by GK SK's from those who excessively suck wheel. Serious first world problem / mamby pamby land.
Nice review and nice tires for sure (when new). But for me (200#) riding gravel those tires at nearly full pressure would last 500-600 miles at the most. :/

Not a fan of the Panracer Gravelking tires. I find they don’t handle well on loose gravel here in No. Cal. I prefer Rene Herse tires with treads in both the 44 & 48MM widths. I find them far superior including riding on the road to get to the trails.
I've had no problems riding Panaracer GK SK in NorCal, and I have many videos to prove it. Loose gravel is often a case of skills over tread patterns in my experience. With that said, no experience riding Rene Herse tyres, made in the same factory as Panaracer. iMHO, they look to be flimsy with a focus on very light weight in some cases, and vastly overpriced.
@GravelCyclist In addition to succeptability to punctures, Rene Herse has also a history of popping off the rim. But I can imagine that their light weight and suppleness can result in great riding characteristics.

Nice one Steve. I had to drop them lower in psi to achieve my preferred feeling, but these tyres are so so nice.

Nice... I'm at around 73ish kgs, I've been tinkering about with ultra-low on the X1 R's at 18 front / 20 rear.

Does the softer side all on the X1R mean it will inflate more than 40mm?
Inner rim width makes the biggest difference to a tyre inflating wider than its stated size. Good luck!

I tried the closest thing to that years ago, a WTB Byway in mud... it didn't go well. Not a tyre designed for mud, it was a bit slippy.

Hey mate, how wide did the 40mm actually measure? I understand the gk's have an understated width
On an ENVE G23, 39.5mm, on Mavic Allroad S wheek, 40.1mm.
Wish the sidewall was more like the Rene Herse colour they make in the same Panaracer factory.
The X1 has a darker sidewall vs the X1R with its lighter sidewall.
