Delhi was founded by Tomar's kingdom in the 8th century. Delhi was built, destroyed and rebuilt several times, as outsiders who successfully invaded India, ransacked the existing capital city in Delhi. Delhi was chosen as their capital by the Lodhi, Tughlaq, Chauhan, and Mughal dynasty. In 1911 the British Government shifted Its capital from Calcutta (Kolkata) to New Delhi.
