Tarikh is a daily program in which we present you with incidents and stories of noteworthy persons of Indian History in Hindi. In this edition of Tarikh, Divyanshi Talks about the origin of Khalistan Movement. The Khalistan Movement emerged in the 1980s as a demand for a separate state for Sikhs in India, known as Khalistan. The movement was led by Sikh militants who were seeking greater autonomy and recognition for the Sikh religion and culture. The movement gained momentum in the 1990s and resulted in a period of violence and unrest in Punjab, India. In this video, we will delve into the factors that contributed to the emergence of the Khalistan Movement, including the socio-political climate of India at the time and the tensions between the Sikh community and the Indian government. The call for a separate Sikh state began in the wake of the fall of the British Empire. In 1940, the first explicit call for Khalistan was made in a pamphlet titled "Khalistan". With financial and political support of the Sikh diaspora, the movement flourished in the Indian state of Punjab 1970s and 1980s.

Nice but some corrections and pointers. Khalistan word was first used in 1940s. Other facts - Sikhs had excellent relations with British and Nehru as well. Jinnah offered autonomous province to Sikhs in the proposed Pakistan but Sikh leaders of the time chose Nehru and India. Akali leader Master Tara Singh at the time of partition and some years later was born Hindu who had adopted Sikhism and asked for more rights. Nehru was respected in Punjab but he went back on his pre independence promises. Khalistan demand doesnt have much traction even today, but becomes heavier as and when other right wings become heavy. Simranjit Singh Mann, the most known face for Khalistan had consistently lost elections for the last 30 years but won this time because of heavy narrative about Hindu rashtra etc. Amritpal is also making the same argument. If Hindu rashtra is so openly propagated, how can Khalistan be wrong. Some genuine issues like Waters, Chandigarh etc have continued to fester for nearly 50 years without a resolution.

Main Demand Of Punjabi's Are Many Punjabi Speaking Area Like - Ambala, Kurukshetra, Sirsa , Fatehabad Etc. in Haryana And Una, Nalagarh, Some Parts Of Kangra District, Etc. in Himachal Pradesh And Union Territory Of Chandigarh Should Be Transferred To Punjab.Punjab Was Divided That Time On The Basis On Language But Due To Political Influence, Many Punjabi Hindu Wrote, Their Mother Tongue As Hindi Rather Than Punjabi. Lala Jagat Narain Also Asked Hindus Of Punjab To Write Their Mother Tongue As Hindi Not Punjabi. Their Is Also Water Crisis In Punjab, Punjab does Not have enough Water to share with other states of India. Reports By Various Institutions, Said That Punjab Is Going To Become Desert In Next 20 Years.

On 1st November 1966 It Was Decided That Chandigarh Will Serve As Joint Capital Of Punjab & Haryana For 10 Years. After That It Will Be Transferred to Punjab And Haryana Will Build Up Its Own Capital And For Temporary Solution All Govt. Buildings(Including Secretariat & Legislative Assembly) , Employees Were Divided In The Ratio Of 60:40 For Punjab And Haryana Respectively, but Neither Chandigarh Got Transferred To Punjab And Haryana Built Up Its Own Capital. Most Of The Head Offices Of Haryana Govt. which was Earlier In Chandigarh Has Now Been Shifted To Neighbouring Town Panchkula Or in Any other City Of Haryana.Since 1984 the Governor of Punjab has acted as the administrator of Chandigarh. I Am Just Speaking Facts. Being A Resident Of Chandigarh I Will Never Want That Chandigarh Should Be Transferred To Punjab because Punjab Govt. Can't Bear Expenses Occuring On Chandigarh By Union Govt. and If Chandigarh will be Transferred To Punjab It Will Also Ruin the beauty of The City.
But One Of Major Problem Of Punjab Is Ground Water depletion. Groundwater depletion in Punjab has been a growing concern. I am amritdhari sikh, living in India Punjab..... I or majority of the sikhs don't need any separate country than India, Rather we feel that, how to take back the area separated from ours which is now a part of Pakistan,.....
To visit our shrines and our ancestors land we have to take visa.....,
I have Brotherhood relationships with majority of Hindu families, so how can we think to get separated from them, just for the political interests of few people.....

I am a Sikh, take it from me. Before everybody starts jumping up and down and blaming the Sikhs for Khalistan, the Cong government in the center, Zail Singh, Buta Singh were much responsible for the rise of Bhindranwale. He was propped up against the Akalis so that the Cong party would win the elections. The Police was instructed not to stop any vehicle marked " Kar Seva", and these vehicles were used to smuggle arms into the Golden Temple. However, Bhindranwale backfired and became anti-congress. There was also external support from the western countries. Chauhan could not have printed stamps, khalistan dollar and khalistan passport without support from foreign govt i.e. UK, because India was seen as an ally of the USSR. So the foreign govt's formented trouble in India. There has been opposition to Khalistan from the sikh community from day one. I remember Khuswant Singh wrote, that Ganga Singh Dhillon, a supporter of Khalistan in the USA should take a dip in the river Potomac and change his name to Potomac Singh Dhillion. Similarly the Kashmir problem was also largely the govt's fault, because allegedly there was large scale rigging in the elections and Sheikh Abdullah was arrested and what not. The trouble in the north east was also the Govt's fault because they neglected the area for years, and left it undeveloped for fear of the Chinese. Children had to walk for miles to go to school. It's the Modi Govt that is changing things now. So it''s the politicians that have caused most of the problems. Same thing is happening now with Amritpal. It's a conspiracy being hatched, clear and simple. Why would he take the Grantha Sahib with him when he went to the Police Station. When he had a "dastar bandi" ceremony, why did he do that in village Rode, [Bhindranwale's village], instead of any other village, or his own village. So my countrymen, let's stand United against these people with nefarious intentions.

In book 'Thoughts on Pakistan' by BR Ambedkar published in 1940 says Punjabis have dominance in India. People from other states will get opportunity only if Punjabis power is reduced. Therefore Division of Punjab and formation of Pakistan is a good idea.

It was written in a context.. Thoughts on Pakistan was basically a criticism on demand of Pakistan and Islamic radicalism. Also among Punjabis the Sikhs were least populated people. The paragraph was reference for Punjabi Muslims who were in majority and they would have captured whole Punjab till Haryana and included it in Pakistan but it failed to happen.
