  • Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster is a recording done by Verve Records in 1957. It has recently been reissued on the Acoustic Sounds Verve Jazz Series. in an all analog cut from the original master tape by Bernie Grundman for Classic Records, pressed at Quality Record Pressing on 180gm vinyl, and housed in a deluxe high gloss laminated gatefold by Stoughton Printing.
    Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster a perfect release to kick off a new series of videos under the banner "Late Night Jazz Pick"
    Coleman Hawkins Encounters Ben Webster features the following musicians:
    Colman Hawkins - Tenor Saxophone
    Ben Webster - Tenor Saxophone
    Alvin Stoller - Drums
    Oscar Peterson - Piano
    Herb Ellis - Guitar
    Ray Brown - Bass
    (Correction: In the video, I stated Herb Ellis is on piano - it is Oscar Peterson on piano and Herb Ellis on guitar - also, even though the jacket states Ryan Smith mastered this, it is in error. This is a repress of Bernie Grundman's wonderful Classic Records mastering)

    The mastering is not by Ryan Smith, but is the original Classic Records mastering from Bernie Grundman.

    Hi Scott, I haven't written in a bit. I used to really love sax, but the I heard Chet Baker and the trumpet became my favorite. That being said, I do love me some Ben Webster. You put it really well, describing his tone as buttery. I became aware of him years ago with his work on a few of the later Billie Holiday albums. I'm not all that familiar with Coleman Hawkins. I'm going to stream the album and will more than likely buy it. On a person note..... I am listening to Cafe Blue, which you turned me onto. It is in my Top 5 LP's of all time. Anyway, I know you had a loss earlier in the year. I'm not sure what your faith tradition is (if any), but this can be a tough time of the year after losing a loved one. I wanted you to know I'm thinking of you. Take care and be gentle with yourself. Best,
    Johnny K.

    Thanks for another video Scott. I was very excited when this was announced as an upcoming release. I love those ‘40s and ‘50s early Tenor Sax players, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, etc. My copy just arrived a couple of days ago, along with several others, but this was the first to be on the TT.
    You said it all. It’s a phenomenal record, with great playing and the audio quality is so good. I was not completely thrilled by the reverb on the Sax playing as it made them sound a little like they were playing in the middle of the soundstage, but down the hallway a touch. I got over that! I would also highly recommend this release to all your viewers.
    On a side note, personally I do NOT think you should pass on video reviews of records that turn out to be disappointing. It’s part of the experience for all of us, but sometimes what is disappointing to one may not be so for another? I’m interested in your viewpoints on as much as you listen to as possible. Good through the bad.
    Plus, sometimes when I’m on the fence about a release a video review from someone that confirms the fact that a certain release should maybe be passed on, I find valuable in my purchasing decisions.
    So, please give some thought to it as I enjoy all kinds of video reviews on both great records and those duds too!
    Congrats on being named in Audiophilia’s top channels of 2023! I concur with his decision and please keep up the good work!

      I know what you are saying regarding reviewing things I'm not crazy about. You're right, and I was afraid when I made the comment it might be taken in a way I didn't intend. Just to clarify, I don't want to be one of these reviewers that likes everything! That serves no purpose. Thankfully historically I have included some duds, and I'm not shy to say what I think about them. I think when I'm just not connecting with something musically, it's a bit harder to talk about. But don't worry, I won't decline to comment about a record if it misses the mark. I was just feeling a bit stuck and wanted something I could really get behind for this particular video at this time.

    Happy to see you do a review of this release. I agree with most of your analysis with a couple minor nits to pick (for me). 🙂 Two things - I thought the bass was really lost and could have been more forward on most of the tracks; and the reverb unfortunately makes me immediately think of a swanky made-for-tv movie from the 70s 😄 (not in a cool way). I don't know if it was a recent disappointment for you but the Craft release of Portrait of Art Farmer is stellar imo, easily my pick of the two.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  7 месяцев назад

      Yes the bass is understated, I think I said it was not showy as Ray can sometimes be, but it's true it could be brought out just a bit more perhaps. The teverb borders on too much but for me stays within the lines of good taste. I've not heard the new Art Farmer yet but I can't imagine being disappointed with any of that series sonically. Musically only one I didn't care for was My Fair Lady.

    Would love to know what pressings you have been disappointed with this year. So I can stay clear from them. Thank for the reviews!

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  7 месяцев назад +1

      I sometimes buy things blindly, mostly in jazz but others as well, and the comment was not really clear. I sometimes will have to spend more time with an unfamiliar album and end up not really connecting with it. There's nothing wrong physically with the record, but I sometimes will struggle with what to say about it musically. Perhaps I'll do a catch all of some of these records which while highly thought of by many, just didn't rock my boat.
      If a record I'm keen on reviewing has issues with mastering or pressing I will do the review and talk about it. I've done several in the past that fall into this category and you can rest assured there will be more.

    Curiously enough the reissue by Classic that I bought almost 30 years ago wasn't gatefold and on the jacket there were no mastering credits (but we know it was done by BG). Of course the musicians are amazing and the sonics stellar: tons of harmonics throughout

      @@ThePressingMatters Certainly. I'll keep an eye out for you as well. There are a couple audiophile record shops here in LA that sometimes get still sealed or barely played collections chock-full of Classic Records, early AP and others that are priced-to-sell... Last time at one shop they had just got in a big collection from an ex-RTI employee. Scored almost a dozen still sealed Classic 33rpm RCA Living Stereo Titles for $35/ea. Also grabbed a bunch of Music Matters Jazz titles from a different shop and collection they had purchased. Have made the habit of emailing every couple weeks to see what these folks get, as those titles move so fast off the shelves. Usually within a day or two. The older AP 45rpm Verve titles are so amazing. Just wish they'd gone one step further back then to do better jackets. Alas...

    I've noticed that some times my system (too) seems to sound even better in the night (or very late in the evening).

      I empathize with your comments about buying music that you find you’re not crazy about. About a third of the records I’ve ordered lately are like that. I guess you just have to get used to the idea that you’re going to waste money at times in this hobby. I end up either throwing them away or giving them away. True, you can watch a streaming version first to decide if you like the music but often I don’t have the patience. Also it does not really give you a true indication of what the sound will be like on the record.

      @@ericlubow4354 That's so true. I used to feel if someone is bothering to reissue a classic album, I'd trust it was a great record. But with jazz, I have to be more careful because not every facet of the jazz world speaks to me. On the other hand I've streamed stuff I was considering and was on the fence, not 100% sold on the recording and then when I hear the record it clicks and the sound is great. This happens often with Tone Poets for me.

From the choice of musicians, all wonderful, to the song selection, really giving the players a chance to create a continuous mood, to the superb Verve engineering that caught everything perfectly and arrayed it in space beautifully, to the sympathetic mastering that Bernie performed for Classic, that brings out the best of this tape with exquisite taste and refinement, to the flawless pressing that shames many much more costly records, and finally the lovely jacket that reinforces the feeling of quality.
