    Well done...
    I am in complete agreement of this period of her career.
    World weary is perfectly stated. She is one of the few singers who can bring tears to my eyes, especially during this period. She is absolutely remarkable.
    I can only imagine being alive during her lifetime and seeing her perform live.
    I do own quite a bit of her work, including this on the mofi version.
    I should get this. It is one of my all time favorites.
    Also agree on the Stoughton covers. PLEASE don't stop those. They do look gorgeous.
    Lastly, like so many brilliant classic artists, I'm afraid that Lady Day has been slowly forgotten and does not elicit the reaction or attention that she deserves.
    Hopefully some who may take a peek at your video today may take notice and listen to this great album, and maybe some of her other works.
    She is well worth their time.

      Wonderful comment, thank you. Her interpretations at this point definitely have insight that is truly remarkable. She brings out meaning and emotions that simply aren't there when other artists do the same song.
      The MFSL is wonderful. Tastefully balanced, relaxed. I love it more now than ever. You might appreciate having one of the others though, being one of your favorites. Being a fan of the jackets, you'd love the new one, and it gives up little to the Marino.
      I just had to say something about the situation with the jackets in the other series. I have all the Classic and original Living Stereo records, and the beautiful gloss jackets of the APs were a big draw to get another version.Sadly I lost interest after seeing the drab matte jackets. I don't think they can afford to have people losing interest in what is already a somewhat niche product.

      Hi Thomas!
      Great to hear from you. While these are all very good, you may have the best of all. The Stan Ricker cut has the vocals tucked a bit more into the soundstage. That's a plus, because on the later two they are more forward and seem to have some emphasis. It's probably a personal choice, but I was delighted to hear this with fresh ears on a better system.

      So great to hear from you on this. I'm glad you love it. For this evaluation I was using the Audio Technica cartridge, the AT33EV which is more forgiving and a bit rolled off on top. My Hana is installed on a VPI I'm testing. It's good to hear a positive report on how the voice is coming across.
      It's truly a new golden age for classic Jazz collectors!

    Very nice review. Much appreciated! Always struggle between 45rpm -vs- 33rpm and the realistic audible difference on such short albums such as this. I do agree that 45rpm does add an audible difference for lengthier and more musically complex records. However, sometimes I wonder if it is as much a marketing ploy. I agree 100% on your statement about the cheap single sleeve covers Analogue Productions was putting out. It was disgusting to see such a cheap and disrespectful presentation of some iconic albums (e.g., Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday...), especially for the price. I am glad they upgraded their game!

      Thank you for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I think as you said, longer and more complex albums can really benefit. But this one works really well at 33, and that gorgeous jacket is a great selling point!

    Hi Scott, typically wonderful review. I, too, love me some Billie. I have a 1981 French Pressing of Distingue Lovers. It's in Stereo, which I prefer. I bought it because I read somewhere it was pretty good. I like it a lot. I think AS put out a new stereo pressing of it. I should probably pick that up. I don't have the other 2 in the Trilogy. Here's my question: I have a VERY modest system and I'm thinking I should wait until I can upgrade my system to include a turntable that I can switch cartridges back and forth. I have bought a few Sam Records of Chet Baker, including one with Bobby Jaspar and one with Dick Twardazik. I've played them on my friend's system, (also stereo only,) which is much better than mine, and it sounded a bit flat.
    I mainly bought those Chet Bakers to have when I have a proper set up to play mono. I'll more than likely do the same with the other two in the Trilogy. Do you have a preference generally between stereo and mono, or does it depend on the artist/pressing. I enjoy your take and how you're very precise about describing the various aspect of the way the album sound, but never comes across as preachy or that you're a know-it-all. Anywho, until next time.....Johnny K.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  2 месяца назад

      Hi Johnny,
      I really don't have a preference any longer on mono vs stereo. The version that best serves the music is ok with me. Honestly with these modern mono remasters, I don't feel I'm giving up anything by it not being in stereo. They sound so good. No I use a mono switch, but I know a dedicated mono cartridge would be best. I wouldn't think twice about collecting well done mono reissues. They are just as involving as a stereo would be. As your system improves and you get either a mono switch or mono set up you'll be glad you did!

    Very interesting to hear you re-appraise your MoFi (which I've never seen out in the wild). Those Anadisk-era pressings are frequently excellent (eg Fantasy Film World of Bernard Herrmann). I must get this new Billie Holiday (but will keep an eye out for the MoFi). I don't always comment, but watch your videos religiously - you do a terrific job, Scott - and I love the eclectic mix of titles you review.

    • @ThePressingMatters
      @ThePressingMatters  2 месяца назад

      Hi!
      So great to hear from you! Yes this era of MFSL often gets overlooked. This reappraisal happened also with GetzGilberto. If you watch my Impex review, you'll note how surprised I was with the sound of the Anadisc. Same here. There are definitely some gems from this period. Fantasy Film World is another. I may do a segment on the Anadiscs. I think it would be VERY interesting!
      Thanks for your kind words about the channel. Good to know and get feedback.

    Hey Scott! Another great video. I have the AP 45 and just bought the Acoustic Sounds version. The 45 to me sounds slightly better but not by much. The new acoustic sounds has a beautiful jacket far better then the 45 version. You’re lucky to have the Anadisc version. I’d like to hear it someday. The only Anadisc record I have is John Hiatt Bring The Family.
    I also have the AP 45 and Acoustic Sounds versions of Songs For Distingue Lovers. I wonder in time if we will have an Acoustic Sounds version of All Or Nothing At All? I guess time will tell.

      Hi Joe!
      Thanks for your comment! Good to hear from someone else that has both the 45 and 33. I agree they are quite close with the 45 edging it out ever so slightly. Very similar tonality. Great jacket made this an instant buy for me. If you've ever felt the vocals to be slightly pronounced as I described, I hope one day you can hear the MFSL. It's smoother in that regard. All of them offer something.
      I really hope they do All Or Nothing At All. Can you imagine that jacket!

    Good Video, I like your presentations. Are your three Versions in Mono? I suppose. If I this true: You dont listen your Monos with a pure Mono-Cartridge. What a pitty. If you would use an AudioTechnica AT 33 Mono or an Ortofon GMU Mono or a Miyajima Zero Mono you would be astonished about the big step in Soundquality, a lot more energy and aura. I own a lot of Holidays albums, included Body and Soul, Song for d... Lovers, All or nothing at all, every album in Mono. But my LP-Versions are cheaper, from WaxTime. I suppose, they dont sound so good as your expensive Versions. Or are they as good as yours, cause I listen with my three Mono-Cartridges? Turntables are Denon DE 3000 NE, Technics 1210 GR with Phono pres from Nagra an GoldNote.
