  • Having covered off in a number of electric and hybrid buses over the last year or so, I wanted to check out one of Sydney's last diesel bus models, a Mercedes-Benz O500LE with a Volgren Optimus body at Transit Systems.
This bus, 8080 was built in August 2020 and is one of the newest diesel Buses in the city. It's interesting to see the transition, and on balance I am excited to see electric powertrain vehicles becoming more prevalent, in both public transport fleets, and for private vehicles too.

In Perth, our OC500LE’s are all powered by CNG, with some diesel units in the regional cities.

I experienced the O500LE Euro 6 in Sydney early this year, and it was great. The powertrain was smooth, quiet and powerful. The suspension was also refined and made me feel comfortable, especially compared to the previous Euro 5 model.

Definitely a step up from the Euro 5 models, and still a decent bit of kit, but excited to see the electric transition continue, especially in an urban environment where modern EV models are becoming more and more suitable.

Seen them out and about, but they were not bespoke builds for Transit Systems, and were built earlier than these...

Shame these buses still have the moulded plastic seats at the back and the rearmost window on the left side blocked up.
I think the Gemilang bodied Mercedes O500LEs have a better interior because at night the lighting on the Optimus is terrible.
TSA also bought some Volvo B8RLE Volgren Optimus buses in 2020 and I think they are basically the same but have a 320hp engine.
Also did you hear TSA has been locking up their electric buses on weekends now?

The left side window was the main one that surprised me. I don't mind the bucket back seats, but it's just part and parcel with the Optimus body, along with the LED strip lighting, which I've always prefered. When I was editing this I realised that a few of the still images were actually of the B8RLE's and only realised just before it came time to export - extremely similar looking.

@@TalkingPlanning I actually think CDC made the right call to ditch the moulded plastic rear seating on its third batch of B7RLE optimus buses.
There are a few ways to differentiate the B8RLE Optimus and the O500LE Optimus. The O500LE has both Diesel and AdBlue fuel caps in front of the rear wheel while the B8RLE has one in front of and one behind the rear wheel (forgot which ones though). Also the B8RLEs have Volvo on them.
Do you know why TSA might have chosen to scrap the left rear window? It could be a cost saving measure but that seems unlikely.
