My family is Cantonese from Vietnam. We escaped in 1978 and eventually arrived in USA after ten months in a refugee camp due to a sponsorship by a church in USA. My mother were great cook. The whole family would serve the congregation to a dinner at the church (it had a big kitchen) to thank them. My mother did all the cooking. I remember when I was moving away and living in an apartment for the first time. She was concerned that I didn't know how to cook. She showed me how to make rice on the stove and how to marinate pork chops with garlic powder and sugar before pan frying. She was a wonderful, loving mother.

A card, whether it is bought or handmade, is very nice to receive. You can put it on display, pick it up and look at it over and over again. It isn't waste. Nowadays you can send digital cards and messages, but they don't feel nearly as nice as a physical card. Whether the card has a wish on it already and you just sign your name, or you write a letter inside the card. It just feels good, feels special. I like to make cards myself, it's a hobby. And people appreciate receiving handmade cards, because it shows that I took the time to make the card especially for them.

Yeonmi, the United States 🇺🇸 is a wonderful country! One day, North Korea 🇰🇵 will finally be free and we’ll all be happy! Happy Birthday 🎉 🥳🎂 🎁 once again!
At this point in history I don't see North Korea becoming free, I see the opposite. I think the United States is going to put the Democrats back in power thinking that they are the same as the old Democrat Party and not realizing that radical Marxists are taking over the party. We are going to end up like North Korea.
Thank you for your videos. I enjoy learning about your experiences, it really puts things in the proper perspective and helps me appreciate things I normally take for granted.
Okay, wow... *WOW* I just realized that Yeonmi has never seen any of the great American films. Honestly, one American film *EVERYONE* will say YOU have to see is called "The Shawshank Redemption." It is about a man in prison for life for a crime he didn't commit and how he makes a deep friendship and never loses hope. Ask your American husband and he'll agree. Also, it would be really interesting to see a North Korean's reaction to "V for Vendetta." It's a superhero movie, but the hero doesn't want to save the world but instead he wants to overthrow the dictatorship that has taken over the UK.
It would also be nice if she saw the normal great American films like The Wizard of OZ, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, The Princess Bride, The Matrix, etc. etc.
Love your channel, so glad you're able to be here in America! I think Tom Hanks is one of my favorite actors cause he's been in some of my favorite films such as Forrest Gump and Saving Private Ryan. I agree, older American films are better! I hope you have a great day, your videos are so informative and interesting!
One of my best friends is from Sweden, and while there are many small cultural differences, and a few larger ones...western nations tend to be a lot alike. There are even eastern countries that America has things in common with but its probably safe to say that North Korea isn't one of them. Its amazing how there are so many things that you find very alien that most American's don't even think twice about because they are so ingrained in the culture that they are habitual or just a part of daily life. Listening to you talk makes me slow down and really think about the things I take for granted in life...things that upon even a little reflection I am so grateful for.
Coming from Massachusetts, I'm a big fan of Tom Brady, but I don't expect someone from overseas to really know about American Football, let alone Tom Brady.
@7:56 - 9:30 I agree with Yeonmi. Hollywood movies have lost their relevance because they have stifled artistry by imposing its McCarthy-like pogrom against actors, writers and producers who cannot pass the progressive smell test. Hollywood today is the epitome of mediocrity. It is sad that their past success was a direct result of liberal values and diversity. Today though, they seem to be imposing a soviet style scrutiny/censorship on all filmography. The people have spoken by rejecting the Hollywood drivel for the past 20 years yet the so-called movers and shakers in that industry are too stupid to see through the radical misguided tint of their hate-filled progressive, me too, blm filters that regular hard-working people reject as value befitting of Satan rather than our mostly good nature.

Anyone coming from a communist, dictatorial, or totalitarian society is always shocked by the amount of just about everything that exists and is available in a western capitalistic country. The amount and variety of everything is staggering and unbelievable to these people because they are used to only have little to no selection for anything in their community. You name it, and it either doesn't exist or is restricted in those oppressed regions of the world where only a few people control everything. Sound familiar. That's what you call monopolies.

Strip clubs are disgusting. Do not go. Like Playboy, that is an aspect of freedom that is dark: people can make choices, but they can also make the wrong choices. I wouldn't call it a bad choice ....im not from the US but we have strip clubs and brothels here . Its highly regulated (health checks etc ) . If people do it willingly and no one is forced who are we to judge. Good morning, I highly recommend the movie "Its a wonderful life" with Jimmy Stuart and Donna Reed. A very old movie but you my dear lady are a George Bailey. You have so much impact on so many lives that you will never even know . Love from Canada 🇨🇦 ❤
That’s one of my favorite movies. That and Forrest Gump. And The Empire Strikes Back. Top 3 movies for me. 🎬🎥
It's a wonderful life is a great choice especially with Christmas around the corner (although it didn't become a Christmas tradition until the '70s I think.)
I understand exactly what you are describing because I have lived in a country that has a Totalitarian system. I feel very lucky to be living in a country where Freedom and Rights of individual is respected.
I wish you all the best Yeonmi.
NK is such a oppressed culture. Coming to America must have been a really culture shock and surprise for you.
America is heading in the direction of NK. More and more kids these days think communism is the way to go. They want to censor speech if it doesn't align with that communist ideal. Only they don't realize it's communist. They call it "progressive".
@@madshader exactly!!!! Crazy Bernie is like a dangerous Grandpa, he looks innocent, sounds full of empathy yet is nothing but a big govt lunatic.

Let's be honest. Clubbing is overrated, most people grow out of it.
Floyd Hill - No lies detected. Shit gets played...
Clubs tend to be overcrowded, ear drum shuttering places full of random, rude people. What's not to like?
I went to a club once, couldn't hear what anyone I was with was saying for the entire night. Never again. Relaxed pubs are where it is at.
Im 21 and HATE clubs. Been there 2 times, never again. A building full of sweaty random people, you have to drink or get high to have fun, alcohol prices are too high, you cant choose the music thats playing and on top of it its so hecking loud and stiffling. Great. No thanks.
Nowadays clubs are a great place to get shot. I will pass on that.
Yeonmi?! When you said "way back in the old days" I thought you were going to mention the Wizard of Oz, or something. The Pianist was made in 2002!! Man I feel old.🤣
Haha you are so funny :) You are not old at all!
I think Yeonmi might think it was much older, as it was about older times.
And also it was made by polish director not american ;)
I think she meant movies about old times
I like smart and intelligent movies too ,but they're times when life is rough stupid movies can be fun watching
I knew she was smart the moment she said “hollywood movies are so shallow and dumb” like for someone who grew up without proper education to notice this really proves and shows that this is true. She also has cultured taste in movies. Im so impressed !
She went to Columbia btw
I think NK has an educational system though and she read a lot of books after defecting.
I agree about the Hollywood movies. There must be good independent theaters in Chicago that show “foreign,” “independent,” and “art house” films you might like. Of course now with COVID-19 it’s not the best time for that.
@Miguel Flagstaff Seriously???
It's okay, strip clubs scare me too. I'm 54 year old male, never been to one in my life. I don't think anybody "needs" to go, even once.
I agree with you but I think she would like to try it out only because she now has the freedom to do ANYTHING so she probably wants to try "everything"
@@halibutrzeczny72 "I've never been tortured before, but now that I am completely free to do anything I want, I want to see what it's like to be tortured." @@demef758 i mean, maybe they want to try some good old classic S&M, who knows?
Regardless, it's a different attitude completely that people get hooked & abuse substances, to the one that is, 'i have the freedom to do all the things now, & at some point in time I'd like to see what this classic American legal common experience at least once and can be done with it the second I want to be done and leave'

I would love to see a video about childhood in North Korea. How are boys and girls raised and educated?
There are lots of documentaries on RUclips knock your self out 😂😂😂
Yeonmi, the United States 🇺🇸 is a wonderful country!
It would also be nice if she saw the normal great American films like The Wizard of OZ, Star Wars, The Sound of Music, The Princess Bride, The Matrix, etc. etc.
V for Vendetta is based on a historic landmark done on the 5th of November! That’s coming up. You should definitely watch it
I didn't know she got married!? I don't think she is she's never mentioned it and doesn't wear a ring
Shawshank is my favorite movie!

I probably feel you close even if I don't know you in person because you are my same age and it makes me feel so bad to know what you went through and what your population is currently going through. It is just absurd that something like this is happening nowadays and no one knows much about it, it hurts just to know this. The thing that hurts the most is that who could help (like other countries) does not do anything because they would not gain anything . It is just unfair, but I hope something is going to change soon.

Strip clubs are disgusting. Do not go. Like Playboy, that is an aspect of freedom that is dark: people can make choices, but they can also make the wrong choices. Worshipping celebrities is another mistake. Of course, this is so much better than not having any freedom at all! I'm glad I have the freedom to make the wrong choices because otherwise, I wouldn't have the freedom to make the right ones. Thank you for sharing your perspective!
Ironically plenty of unfree countries pretty much have brothels, prostitution and a long list of other establishments much more disgusting than strip clubs and playboy.
Yes. Freedom only makes bad choices more visible.
I wouldn't call it a bad choice ....im not from the US but we have strip clubs and brothels here . Its highly regulated (health checks etc ) . If people do it willingly and no one is forced who are we to judge.
I wouldn't go to such places just cause I have no interest , but if someone does and there are people willing to provide this service - I don't see anything wrong with it.
