  • For years, both Volkswagen and Toyota fought for the title of largest automotive company in the world.
Yet, at least in North America, both brands have taken their time embracing all-electric models. That’s set to change over the next few years, and the ID.4 and bZ4X represent their respective automakers first moves into the EV space here. Both target the lucrative small SUV segment, but like the Tiguan and RAV4, they go about it in very different ways.

They both look so boring, easy to mix them up.

I don't know why reviewers keep getting the window switches wrong. If you hold your finger on the "REAR" button, you switch to a mode where you can open and close all 4 windows at once. As for the sliders/touch controls, they aren't difficult to use. A quick tap will raise and lower temperatures one degree at a time, or you can slide to make a big change in a hurry. Of course you don't have to use them at all - you can just ask the car to make your side warmer or cooler.

Overall I enjoyed your review but you did get a few things wrong. First off, you can control all 4 windows by holding down the front/rear window toggle. Plus the slide toggles on the infotainment are really nice to use in my opinion. They are not just flat, they are contoured to the shape of your finger tip which makes them super comfy to use. You can tap for fine adjustment or slide for quick larger adjustments, my only beef with them and it's a big beef is they are not currently backlit (2024 models will be). Also with ground clearance, the VW actually has 8.25 inches which is similar to the bz4x. I know the specs say 6 something inches but it is totally wrong, go ahead and grab a tape measure and prove me wrong.(you won't). This has actually been discussed on the id4 forum and we are all baffled as to why the spec sheet is so wrong. The VW does have 360 camera if you get the FULL statement package. It was stripped out of some cars when chip shortages were really bad but some cars have the full statement package with 360.
You also mentioned wireless carplay/AA in the Toyota and the VW also has that but I don't think was mentioned.
Also not mentioned. The VW has a heated windshield which is a unique and useful feature that I don't think any of its competition has. It has a rear camera washer, again a very useful and unique fearure. Trailer hitch is standard on AWD models and comes with a 7 pin!!! Connection which is insane on a vehicle like this. It has self parking which I'm not sure the Toyota has(?). These are just a few things that come to my head without thinking, I'm sure I'm missing stuff.
I'm not ragging on your review, but just thought I'd add my 2 cents as I am not only an id4 owner but have owned 5 other EVs in past 3 years so i have a good sense of comparison.

Personally I thing the ID4 is boring to look at. The seats can't nt match the bZ4's. The VW dealership and service is no match comparing to Toyota. 5 years of warrenty and further 5 years Relax. I've gone for the bZ4, since we have rough winters, and the AWD with proper wintertires will get me to where I wanna go - every day.

Samesame, the bZ4x is built for winter conditions.
‘What about the battery blabla’ - 99% of my trips in the winter are < 30 km.. and my EV-loving country is packed with charging stations all over.

@@kienfung3045 If you think the Toyota is the better vehicle you obviously know nothing about EVs.
The bZ4X is such a poor excuse of an EV it’s honestly pathetic from a company as big as Toyota, it charges like crap, has mediocre range, isn’t efficient, poor thermal management, ugly, crappy interior, isn’t considerably cheaper than the much better competition, and is evidence of Toyotas complete lack of vision in terms of BEVs and instead trying to push their investments like hybrids which are a stopgap technology and hydrogen which has no place in passenger vehicles.
The ID.4 outperforms it in basically every way, anybody who isn’t blindly loyal to the Toyota brand can see that. Acting like the bZ4X is a remotely good vehicle is a joke if I ever heard one.

@@pine111 Everthing you said is only Your opinion. Vw Id cars, lot of softwareproblems. With the bz4x the range is 315km the Id4 is 285 real range. Toyota, poor this poor that, pathetic his, Id outperform the bz4x almost everything.. Please cut the crap. Toyota 10year warranty. I don't see vw give the costumer 10year warranty. Ok, let's talk about non EV cars. Which is more or reliable? Don't have to think twice. Toyota.

@@kienfung3045 Tell me you’re a Toyota fanboy who can’t admit Toyota can make a crappy vehicle without telling me.
The bZ4X is an objectively worse vehicle than the ID.4, not an opinion. AWD bZ4X 222 miles of range vs the ID.4s 255 miles, AWD bZ4X charges at max 100kW with an utterly sad charging curve while the ID.4 charges at max 170kW with a significantly better charging curve, bZ4X has 6.6kW on board charger ID.4 has an 11kW on board charger, bZ4X AWD has 214hp, ID.4 AWD has 295 hp, all that considered you would think the bZ4X would be at least $10k less than the ID.4 considering how poorly it compares, yet it isn’t.
The bZ4X came out of the gate with the wheels falling off and a massive buy back and is now experiencing the 12V battery draining overnight… I don’t see any “Toyota reliability” here.
It’s an objectively bad car and the ID.4 is objectively better, only people blindly loyal to the Toyota brand unable to comprehend that this is a bad vehicle or people getting insane discounts from the dealer cause Toyota can’t sell these things would buy the bZ4X over an ID.4 or any of the competition.

@@kienfung3045The range now is 517 km with 18 inch wheels on the FWD-version. Since the latest update a lot has been improved, including the charging. Got to drive one and I like it a lot. No VW for me, let alone the waiting time and software problems. I’ll buy the Toyota soon with 10 years warranty and 200.000 km on the battery. 👌
