I saw a video of an amazing wind turbine installed on the divider of a large avenue in the Delhi area of India. Passing vehicles were powering the turbine which looked similar to the one in the video. The power gen was used to light the street at night. 😀
When the wind is blowing slow having this matched with solar will boost your daily charge especially in north lat. dark season, the turbine by itself needs Signiant wind to do it all by itself. Residential wind is a booster for residential solar. When pricing for a new residence that has no power it makes sense. My application will cost north of $10,000 to get power on the lot, then I have to pay a connection fee of around $50/month forever plus sales taxes. A solar/wind system with batteries adds up to a lot of savings over 10 years. My current home, grid tied, it takes more then 10 years to break even on solar alone, batteries make it take longer. while I have significant wind for more then 6 months of the year, and those months are the darker months the math doesn't work well for my current home - new place however this is a no-brainer. I will still need to have a Generator in the system, because bad things happen.
The issue for scaled down wind turbines isn't the high winds but the opposite, how to get power at very low wind speeds that is the issue for the majority of people looking for a wind turbine
Wind Energy is NOT lucrative for homes. The main factors are huge installation and maintenance costs at very low energy output. To gather enough wind in a cost efficient way you need big wings. This is because the available energy to gather from wind is proportional to the area from which the wind is gathered, which is a circle of area A = pi * r^2. So double the rotor length means quadruple available power. Solar is more convenient, reliant and cheaper for homes.
My brother has solar panels and the electric company is charging him $350 per month for access to the grid. If you think that you can sell them excess electricity, they will pay you the same price as they pay other generation companies 3 cents per Kw.
What state is that? I'm in VT and have 10.3K for 8 years. Our sharing pays me 5.0cents /KW for ten years, but costs have gone from 14 cent to 20 cents/KW. So basically I am subsidizing myself and that expires @ 10 year mark.
$3200 for 160 watts of power? There's no way the residential market can afford that. A single solar panel and a battery bank can do more than that with 10% the cost. Good informative video get a like from me. Product on the other hand is not feasible.
*All practical tests show that small wind turbines hardly generate any electricity! And only at very high costs!* Because there is hardly any wind close to the ground. It is also extremely gusty, which usually shortens the service life extremely! Only if you need to be self-sufficient from the power grid & live close to the sea, you should install the largest possible wind turbine on a high mast. *With solar modules, on the other hand, reliably generate electricity for 25 - 30 years at approx. 2% to 5% oft he cost of small wind turbines!*
I can equal those numbers on a wind generator with a 100 amp alternator, running 12v to a converter. And the batteries are way cheaper. The blade configuration shouldn't be much of a barrier, either. A lot cheaper all the way around. I could invest the DIY time and an initial $3K, to be fully functional. You don't have to have lithium batteries, even if you add solar. Best of all, you can invest in stages of only a few hundred dollars at a time. Even so, each stage gets you closer to actual independence. Also, remain tied to the electric company, but sell them your excess juice. All electric companies have such protocols, mandated by Federal Law. Just some things you ought to know when you get a sales pitch like this. 🖖
Do you have a reference? I checked the FTC web site and could not find any reference to wind turbines.
