Sorry but have to say if you think that the government or government bodies are still working for the people you are lost....I am not trying to be rude just a fact... Government's have not worked for the people for a long time now...
Only because we (or at least the 95%) let them get away with it. We have the power to fix the problem -- but only 5% of the population has the testicular fortitude to do so.
I remember when I started flying model aircraft back in the late 80's councils in the UK had to provide the hobby a sites to fly, only thing we needed was BMFA membership with liability insurance but clubs and the hobby fizzled out and i left the hobby, I returned to it with a mate 15 years ago and we flew away from built up areas and flew smaller stuff in parks, I built an fpv cload surfer from one of your videos and flew that totally illegally and loved, I never hurt anyone or anything, but now adays no one's really into model flying so now I fly a paramotor and get to fly a real aircraft, yes you have to deal with airspace and weather watch and not to annoy people but it's far less regulated
That is an absolute fact. So much so, I gave up my AMA membership I have had since I was a child. The AMA sends me these stupid things to rejoin and they ask why, only they leave off the answer I truly want to share. Convenient they don't want to hear the truth. The AMA continues to let us down so much that I am focused more on rubber/free flight instead of RC primarily now. Total rubbish organization.
The only thing the AMA did was attempt to position themselves as THE authoritative CBO. They saw an absolute crisis that threatened to rock our entire hobby and burn it to the ground and they took that as an opportunity to make themselves comfortable on the government's lap.
In Canada we have the MACC which is the equiv as AMA, I discovered around 2011 that they had a grudge against rc helicopter pilots, if you weren't plankin they barely wanted to know you. Of course when drones came along they called it the death of their hobby. Anything that wasn't fixed wing they didn't care too much to represent which explains everything.
48 years of flying rc planes I recently was forced to do a multiple choice test to continue to do so, none of the questions related to flying ability just to the rules. 😮
Yes, I too had to do a 'Rules Test' which was a pointless box ticking exercise yet I already have two model flying qualifications which were true tests of my ability but they count for nothing to government regulators.
people in the us have to take a part 107 FAA test most of that, is the same as an actual pilot, you need to be able to read the aviation maps, understand landing patterns, runway numbers , understand NOTAM's , read and understand the weather updates that are given in code by local airports, understand altimeters, then all the laws of aircraft plus the laws for a drone, seems like you are just whining about a simple test! passed it 98%
@@imyourocd No they dont. The 107 is for commercial activities only. We have to take the TRUST test. Its incredibly easy to pass and is basically just common sense
Such a shame that the Modelling Associations felt that the best way was to go and collaborate with the regulators. The Minister in charge at the time made it very clear what she thought of the recreational flyers. We have seen in the UK a reduction in members flying and new ones being dissuaded by regulations, tests, ID requirements etc . The regulations will not determine those wishing to use "drones/unmanned flying vehicle" outside the law . We have to pay for a licence to enjoy our hobby . I don't see bicycle or dog owners having to jump through similar hoops. You are very right Bruce to say they want to monetise the airspace pretty much ground up and we are just a little irritant for those politicians that feel that we are getting in the way of a future revenue stream.
Unfortunately, there’s no new young generation, wanting to take up the hobby and all the old-timers have become complacent. I hardly ever see kids even playing outside anymore
I think one of the problems is big business, such as Amazon who want to use drones for delivery. They are the ones demanding “our airspace”. Of course money talks and if you throw enough money at these regulators, they’ll do whatever these companies want.
idk about this growing up in the US flying rc was always illegal off a ama field, a faa drone pilot can fly almost anywhere with permission and have valuable services like tower, powerline, bridge inspections, aquaculture, topography, mining, emergency like finding lost people, inspection of devastation sites from earthquake to hurricane to wildfires to find survivors the list goes on , seem like a bunch of bitches that don't see the real value.....
I totally agree. I am very dissatisfied with the AMA. About 6 years ago I was on a flight to Germany and sat next to a man going to an international conference about regulations for drone airspace use. I can’t remember his name but he owned a company that made an app that I had used on my DJI Mavic Pro. It was the app/software called ??? 360. When activated it would fly the drone straight up to a designated altitude and then take a series of pictures. The app would then download the pictures to their server which would stitch them together and send the stitched picture back to you. The picture then allowed one to scroll around the view from the prospective of the drone. The guy was delighted I had used his app. He said they wanted to work out rules as he and others had plans to use larger drones for package delivery and eventually air taxis. He stated that all drones and RC aircraft would be included under new rules and asked what I thought. I said that I could understand why they would need airspace refs for flying large drones over cities but stated that that was no reason to regulate the hobby which fly in a totally different air space. I said it would be impossible to regulate the hobby with real enforcement. He seemed to disagree. I then stated that in city’s I could see gangs getting great pleasure out of grabbing delivery packages and then pulling the drones down for parts and batteries. No response. I think all of these quad delivery prospectors have thoughts of this with no answer. That type of reality would stop the thoughtless investors in their tracks. I would include government grants in that investor group. I stated stated I heard a pilots license with a glider rating, and that were a number of existing flight rules that restricted aircraft from flying to low over populated areas. He didn’t have much to say. So I would say that you are correct that the AMA was ineffective and that companies developing drones for delivery and companies like Amazon are a prime cause of this. So what happens when a gang pulls a drone down by its string causing the drone to crash and kill a child? I think the package delivering drones will become a bad dot in history, unlike the near spotless 100 years plus of RC aircraft and RC helicopter history. By the way I also fly RC airplanes and Helicopters. One ray of light, last week I listened to a RUclips with a congressman talking positively about the incoming Trump administration and there wanting to cut regulations and regulatory overreach. He then mentioned the FAA as a recent offender. Light at the end of a dark tunnel perhaps? NOW IS THE TIME TO SPEAK YOUR MIND TO YOUR SENATOR AND CONGRESSMAN!!!
I wish. Sadly, I do not think Trump and cutting regulations will have any benefit for us. Bennies are mainly big for companies like Boeing.. yes, to green light them being able to cut corners (which will kill more people) and overwork employees. Our niche hobby doesn't generate enough money to matter... they would rather side with Amazon. Even if it did help modelers, I would gladly decline so deregulation doesn't kill me or mine due air or car safety issues. Also, I like safe food and clean air more than my hobby (which I love and have ~ 40,000 invested).
Trouble maker. “Oh no, wasn’t me.😅” With all the times you went before the counsel they probably have flyers with your mug on them to ask the guy if he recognizes you. Just keep flying Bruce, you’re not hurting anyone.
Yep, I figure that if "the powers that be" won't listen then you simply have to demonstrate that when something is over-regulated, rules can be broken without endangering person or property.
It is simply up to individuals now to stand up to the authorities and say "NO!" I will NOT register EVER because I do not fly around people. I obey the sensible rules and ignore the silly ones. To hell with pencil necks who try to force stupid rules on us.
I think RID in the USA is a great example of how civil disobedience can have an effect. Could it be that the FAA realises just how many people are flying without RID and might that be why RID was never mentioned during the NJ "mystery drones" incident or the Palisades fires? RID has been a bust within significant swathes of the hobby because people used the magic word: *_"NO"_*
Very good presentation Bruce! All governments are interested in, long term, is making money from licensing Amazon, air taxis etc. We'll be squeezed out if we don't stop this. Thanks!
@@xjet I am a solid NO on RID too. I just fly my gliders and airplanes where I choose now, and opted out of regular fields. They actually increase the risks by forcing this garbage on us.
That's what I'm doing here in England. I'm 61 and just started flying this year. I had no idea that I need to have an 'Operators id' and register my helicopter. Not going to stop me enjoying flying.
I totally agree-the BMAA effectively rolled over with virtually no serious stand made against this bullshit from the CAA-and it is bullshit as it is impossible to police and therefore enforce.
I gave up flying r/c about 10 years ago due to a person complaining to the local council . The issue was not our fault but a farmers son flying nearby on there own field and at all times of the day . I tried to explain but ended up loosing my field ...so i sold everything and got a flight simulator ....not the same 😢😢😢😢
*_"we have a situation where we've been sold out by national modifying bodies haven't represented our interests or our rights haven't protected"_* Bruce, you are 100% correct and here in the U.S. the *_AMA did the same thing to us!!!_*
Auto stabilized drone flying is not the same as building a model plane or heli and installing the systems then balancing and setting the systems up to have a flyable aircraft. THEN learning to fly said model aircraft in accordance with the laws of physics and aerodynamics.
Yep, took me a few years to understand that the AMA here in the states really is oriented to support traditional fixed wing RC in the wide open spaces of the American mid-west - but weren't doing anything but rolling over and endorsing the FAA's idiotic rules and regulations to help commercial interests trying to take away support for drone operators in more highly populated areas. I gave up trying to fly about 5 years ago (even giving my stuff away), because as a disabled person I couldn't even fly anything 10m off the ground in my own driveway. If an airliner is flying that low over my house, we all got bigger problems.
I am just so grateful I took my first RC model lessons in the early 90s. I feel so lucky that I was part of the hobby from the 90s to mid 2010s. The glory days are gone and will not be coming back. Here is a name that I really point the finger at who I believe has played a role in the demise of RC. 'Hobby King!' They were so powerful in the early 2010s that the traditional hobby shop could not compete. Virtually all hobby shops in Australia are gone. Then they closed their Aussie warehouse. Have a look at their stock and prices now.
No. This was coming for a long time, and had nothing to do with hobbists. It is a result of the airspace wanted by corporations for drone deliveries, drone security, and drone nonsense of companies willing to buy that airspace and use it.
And all that HobbyKing MD ever did was totally unoriginal - he worked with China in a self-serving, unfettered way with a bunch of ignorant, cheap air-heads doing his RUclips spiel
MFNZ have failed us ,so more rules than before . Everyone has to resist there wings badge if it's more than 5 years old . Spotters have to be certified. Crazy thing is if I walk out the gate of my rc club and fly just out of the gate,MFNZ rules don't apply and I fly under Shielded operation . Having to resist wings badge has upset alot of flyers, many won't bother and will just fly in parks instead
I've got nothing against offering the Wings badge, however I think MFNZ is trying to play "big boys" by making members re-sit the test ever few years. Hell, we're flying *TOY PLANES* not 747s and you don't even have to re-sit your driver's license when you renew it. Hundreds of deaths a year on our roads -- how many deaths by drone or RC plane? It smacks of trying to make yourself more important when you try to treat a hobby endorsement like an actual pilot's license with its BFR. What's next? A medical?
Very enjoyable video Bruce! I completely agree with you and I did leave the AMA several years ago. Fortunately, we have a small private airfield locally to fly our fixed wing gas and electric planes. I fly my DJI and Potensic drones in my neighborhood and fortunately, our neighbors are fine with it. Please keep your great videos coming my friend.
Part of the problem could be that current technology helps beginners skip the chuck glider stage. That leaves us with RC operators who simply don't understand aerodynamics. Even most of today's RUclips RC experts have no idea how air works. That's a recipe for disaster, DJI or not.
Were going through a wierd phase in life at the moment where everybodys feelings are on the cooker..Everybody wants to be offended.. This drone codswallop is just another sliver of the pie, its clear evidence that were out of control with our feelings and everythings on the table, dont look at me crossing the street, call me by the name I now reside under, dont fly your drone within 2km of my kids.. Im insulted,im angry, im scared for my life, Im Im... LOST !!! ...
I passed my UK BMFA flying exam in the late 80's and flew model airplanes and helis on and off until 10 years ago. Then the UK laws around all this and the need for FAA exams, etc. caused me to give it up as it became far too much aggro as well as expensive each year to fly a $150 electric plane for a bit of fun maybe 10 days a year. 99% of kids aren't interested in flying planes or helis. They dont' grow up making balsa wood planes like we did. Our hobby is dying and will never come back as we knew it. In the UK planes and helis are generally seen as an old mans hobby that kids see as boring. Governments, etc. don't give a crap about individuals, only the big corporations that will give them donations and support for their own ends. I've followed your stuff since it was just a web site and loved it all. Sadly our hobby is ending as the majority of the public really aren't interested. So sad.
I think the path for the hobby is to get High schools involved with drone racing as a sport. The militaries of the world can train a generation of skilled drone pilots(in legislators eyes). And it puts model aircraft on media radar in a more positive light. Especially tinywhoop racing can cost $200 in equipment per person which is far less than some school team sports need for equipment. Pilots need to become teachers and coaches and spread the hobby to more people. All we need is some positive media
I don't know... once the military gets involved we'll be considered to be mercenaries. Hell, did you see that there's now a move afoot in the USA to require background checks before you can buy a 3D printer because they "could" be used to make illegal firearms? Seriously!
@@xjet You can make your own 3D printer. The RepRap movement is why they are so cheap. The same reason you cannot regulate drones, they can be made from commodity parts with opensource software and simple integration. The idea of regulation is the endless wet dream of politicians and regulators to be seen to be doing something to prevent artificial fears so it looks like they are doing something and relevant. The Liberator plans are sure to be out on the web in many places and there are many more better models but there has not been the spate of daily murders with 3D printed guns, that was all fear mongering to get people to not allow freedoms to be clawed back. The only reason there are licences and regulations on guns is because the government want a monopoly on force and much or it is used against their own citizens, especially in times when the government in in the wrong.
Carless pilots are just as much to blame. RC aircraft have been around since the 1930s but I think you'd be hard pressed to find evidence of repeated controlled airspace incursions by RC prior to the mass roll out of commercial quad copters
@@seanavery7265 as long as it’s not a 2 line stunt kite .. that would give u too much personal enjoyment and would need banning strait away 😂 it’s sad to say this could become a rule and it wouldn’t suprise any of us here in uk
You are spot on in relation to the attitude of model clubs and national associations. Due to my trade training and work history I found out that both National Associations AND (in my case), CASA have NO IDEA how the radio equipment functions! CASA refers questions to the national association and the National Association refers questions to CASA. The lack of technical knowledge and understanding has been testified to and recorded in the Supreme court records in Queensland. The powers at be are using this obvious lack of knowledge and intelligent thought to drive the hobby to the edge of oblivion. I found a loop hole and I am now a designer/builder/repairer/test pilot of "Drones" as well as a flight/technology instructor and do not need any licence or other restrictive instrument as long as I follow CASA rules and local laws. I have 4 flying sites within 15 minutes, (cycling time), of home and the club has only ONE site within a 30 minute drive. Until the hobby gets its act together and finally approaches the hobby in a serious and adult manner the hobby will continue to decline. The government cannot determine the difference between the dedicated hobbyist and the 15 year old kid who is teaching himself to fly fast and crash hard! When was the last time someone, (apart from me), studied the electronic parts making up the models we fly and tried to put to bed some of the total BS and unsafe rules that the ruling illiterate formulated 50 years ago and that are simply brought forward generation to generation? Why is it that a $600 model does not have a $20 stabiliser fitted? The argument about flying the model without computer assistance is total BS because the Stabiliser can be switched off if required BUT the Failsafe could enable the stabiliser function in the case of a loss of receiver signal! There is NO requirement for accident investigation, (proper and informed), and therefore there can be no improvement in model safety universally. I have proven my safe and responsible attitude and actual performance to the authorities but I am barred from the national club scene because I refused and continue to refuse to operate my models and equipment in the unsafe manner dictated by the technically illiterate "EXPERTS" who had determined what was safe during the days of 27MHz AM radios and see no reason to investigate any further. CASA requires all drone pilots to "KNOW YOUR DRONE", but how can you know your drone without knowing your radio! Additionally CASA requires all operators to operate their drone in the safest possible manner but the national clubs require you to follow their operating rules that are NOT the safest possible! I loath and despise Authoritarian LUDDITES!!! No one has sought to have a LICENCE structure implemented by the federal regulating body but with a licence issued after a proper test of safety and attitude would assist greatly in the eyes of Authorities. If the government obtained some revenue then their own income from taxes and fees would be adversely effected by driving the hobby to extinction. Governments love their fees and charges. Currently the clubs levy fees for little in return. The local club has access to a specifically designated location fee free and the grounds are kept up by the local authorities AND volunteers. I still cannot find out where the fees are spent in the promotion or furtherance of the hobby. If hobbyists want the government bodies to treat us all with respect then we collectively need to do something ADULT to earn that respect!
For ten years, all I have operated are DJI camera drones and I am proud my videos and photos. For me, the rules seem okay to follow and it is all I have known. I would like more easy access to DOC land. You are correct, it is nonsense to blame operators like me for ruining things. This just smacks of 'old guard puffed up gatekeepers' mouthing off.
Despite the grim outlook I'm happy to see xjet is still fighting the good fight as knowledge is power. FPVUK has done a great job with negotiating with the CAA for Article 16, sorry to see things not work out as well in NZ.
I appreciate your perspective. It is ashamed that it has come to this. It will have more drastic impacts in the future as the less and less young people pursue aviation technologies due to the lack of interest at an earlier age.
Im 63 years old and when I was a child, RC aircraft was a dream of mine that was simply out of reach. Without any sort of mentoring available, The cost, the hours of building a model, and then the thought that there was a real possibility of putting another great number of ours into building a new model because of an accident before any real enjoyment was discovered. Those things kept me a dreamer till I was well into my 40's and I discovered there were cheap, pre built (and easily repairable) foam planes available. I got into the hobby And finally got to experience the dream I had for so long. I eventually bought a commercially available quadcopter. I remember walking into the hobby shop feeling embarrassed to ask about one. I knew it was difficult and very expensive to learn to fly an RC heli because they did not used to have all the gyros and stabilization used to have. I was offended when people called them drones when they were just a model with a go pro hanging underneath. The cheap models are mostly gone now in favor of "drones".
I really don't think that delivery drones will ever be a thing. There's no economy of scale. Flying is so energy inefficient compared to terrestrial transport. The cost is too high, always will be. There's a reason that everyone doesn't have a helicopter rather than a car. Money. Everything else doesn't matter if the cost benefit is not there. They key is always money. Once they realise that the fantasy of flying cars belongs in the 80s, then the skies will open up again for those that are willing to pay a small fee rather than get nothing at all. "Money gets you one more round, drink it down, you stupid clown. Money get you one more round, or you're out on your ass!"
Wall mart and Amazon both are already using drone delivery in the bigger city’s here in the states. Additionally a man has already went to jail for shooting one as well
Bruce, in the face of all this 'eclipsing' and undermining of a worthy hobby I decided to resurrect a classic - we'll all remember (of my generation anyway - and your's too Bruce) one of the first things we were taught to make as kids - the cotton reel tank crawler made using a matchstick, elastic band and and a hand-crafted wax governor. Well I made one again and was shocked to see dedicated pages on my local council's web site that classed this as an undesirable entity. This down to the fact that it: - could proffer joy and happiness to one or many people without regulatory constraints - encouraged manual dexterity - was a precursor to stronger technical obsessions and skills development - could, when combined with AI lead to the total destruction of Shropshire by autonomous craft - could be used virtually anywhere without being able to be tracked - could function fully without any connection to the Cloud - used 100% recycled material thereby precluding any requirement to outlay monies - could if correctly configured be used to carry contraband to UK prisons :-) :-)
Uk based here Bruce long time watcher .. I think a lot of the attention has come from the use of the term (Drone) just my opinion .. public are scared of the word drone hearing it is like to most seeing a spider it scares them subconsciously.. those of us 40+ and older would have had drone drummed into us with ww2 learning and the dreaded V1 buzz B .. allways known as a drone due to the noise it made with the pulse jet .. fear comes with drone as disaster follows .. new age MOD reapers (Drone) strike fear .. the word Drone is a danger word and has been used as such unfortunately the rise with social media photography which beautiful cinematic photography is a big part of .. anyone can buy a quad copter the same as anyone can buy an rc warbird .. but one flies itself and the other would last 10 seconds without tuition of flying .. the ease of quad operation for the public means that they have become a nuisance to the every day person .. most people who have no interest in aviation will stand and applause an rc plane or warbird display and appreciate the skill to fly and know it’s a hard process to go through where as they will call authorities on seeing a quad as it’s a scary Drone .. I have no objection to quads and think they are a wonderful enhancement to the aviation hobby with air to air photography .. search and rescue .. landscape management .. where we go from here I don’t know but I do feel it is a large part of the downfall of the rc modelling hobby .. thanks for the vid Bruce 👍🏻
Yep, the huge difference in skill-level and other aspects make "drones" quite distinct from the traditional hobby -- which is exactly why the national bodies should have stood their ground and demanded to be recognised differently. Unfortunately, most regulators use the world "drone" or UAS to describe both model aircraft and drones with ZERO distinction. This is outrageous -- but the national bodies did *nothing* to stop it.
This is true, but the fun drones don't fly themselves. Thats the part I want more people to know, not ALL drones are boring, just the ones everyone hears about are.
@ yes I do agree with your thoughts and statements on the governing bodies being sat down and pretty much silent pretending they don’t understand how to negate the differences .. the tech that has been developed with quads and hex copters has helped hugely I would say with also bringing enthusiasts to the hobby .. the market on quads is huge compared to fixed wing so has invited a lot of enhancement to beat the next competitor with stabilisation sat tracking as3x .. which I believe has helped alot of newcomers fly there first plane and succeed due to safe rx technology a few years ago they my not have had that start and crashed and never stayed in the hobby .. I would still say the first start to all is to soften the use of the word drone and give it a chance referring to them as quads or hex’s .. I have no issue either with free speech but the way language has been weaponised in recent years .. play the psychy at its own game .. I don’t want to see the end of the hobby and I don’t want my sons generation to see the end either .. anyone who gets there passion and enjoyment from flying quads or Flying FPV should also be able to enjoy there hobby the same as a baker making cakes .. can we please have a few more vids addressing this particular discussion .. appreciate ur time and efforts Bruce 👍🏻
@ those urban FPv pilots blow my mind how quick there reactions are and how in tune the pilot is with the quad .. certainly watching the footage makes your hairs stand on end like a rollercoaster .. excitement and a little fear .. very skilled as there fully in tune with more axis’s then fixed wing .. I do appreciate the hours of learning that skill and even more so harder and skillful as your disorientating by doing it in goggles .. I would love to try a head tracking FPV flight at some point .. but will start with a gently glider platform or piper cub lol 👍🏻
@highflying82 well the hardest part of line of sight for me, turning my brain backwards when I am flying back towards myself. In fpv you just go forwards. So I think you would find it easy!
I'm super impressed with Arnie the spotter's ability to camouflage himself for the sake of video quality. Must've been up in that tree you were sitting near. He's so agile! Like a ninja, that fella! Screw regulations. I painted "SUB250" on my FMS MAULE so I can fly it at the park near my home. Park Rangers come around, I just say, nope. I'm only flying SUB250. Look how tiny it is. It's not 300 ft up. Just appears to be. 'Cuz it's SUB250. 👍
Unfortunately, due to contractual obligations, Arnie isn't allowed to appear on camera -- that would cost far more than I could afford. So he sits just out of view but within earshot so if there's any danger around, he gives me a shout.
Love the HD footage (and excellent vocal audio) of you walking through NZ suburbs :-) When regulators have a reason to make changes, they usually invite extensive public consultations with the industry and interested parties. Did you lobby at the time? I'm referring to the entire sector, modelling bodies, hobbyists, enthusiasts--everyone across society is invited by public invitation to make their submissions when these things are postulated. Post some regulator email contacts--let's tell them directly where they failed--getting active and exerting our influence is pivotal though--we will win concessions, but only via showing motivation, activity and organisation.
Trust me, I certainly made submissions during the rule-making process but there's an attitude in this country within certain sectors of government and its agencies which goes _"we are legally required to consult but we are not legally required to actually listen. "_ People in positions of power and authority in this country often forget that they work FOR the public and should work WITH the public and stakeholders to produce the best outcome. I have lobbyied the regulator for many years to update their outdated rules and even tried to force the matter into the courts in order to force change by way of creating legal precedent. I did that by deliberately breaking one of the more insane rules, publishing a video with the evidence and a full confession. After a three month investigation I was told that they felt it _"would not be in the public interest to prosecute"_ which is bureaucrat-speak for _"we know the judge would laugh the case out of court"_ so no action was taken. At least this proved beyond doubt that the rule in question was a bad rule -- or this agregious breach would have been prosecuted... right? In 2019 there was a consultation that was to shape changes to the rules but it's now 2025 and no changes have been made -- so that was a wasted consultation because any changes made on the basis of that consultation would already be six years out of date. I wanted to interview the regulator for my viewers but they refused participate. So now I just fly when and where I choose with the safety of people and their property foremost in my mind.
WOuld love you too do a in detail video on Gyroflow. Got a RC Thumb Pro W and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but the footage looks worse when its finished.
Great rant Bruce, and nothing will change until members of the model flying associations realize that they are getting zero value for their membership fee and opt out. As you rightly state, they are not lords and masters, they are paid by members to give help and guidance and be representatives to promote and protect the group's rights. Members get none of that so what are they still paying for?
I'm new to the rc hobby, at aged 61. I've always loved rc aircraft, particularly helicopters. I now have an rc Bell Jet Ranger, rtf, gps/manual, weighing in at 317g. Here in the UK, I had no idea I need an 'Operators id' and the helicopter registered. If I didn't have RUclips, I would not know this at all. Just going carry on enjoying flying.
I honestly don't know what to tell you, Bruce... But I still think it's going to get much worse before it gets better. 😕 Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I totally agree. There are different licencing rules for motorcycles, cars and trucks (we have to take different tests to operate them) so why was this so hard for them to achieve? Laziness.
When i got my first drone and wanted to fly safe and follow rules i joined one if these organizations. I quickly saw they didnt care about us. Yhey actively did things agianst us while saying they were defending us.
Hi Bruce quick question about to get my first real drone in AU not interested in DJI at all looking at one of the Emax Tiny Hawk 3 models any good as a learner drone ??
Bruce,I haven't been able to fly here in the US because it's been extremely cold and windy.A few days ago I saw someone flying an EDF jet and an Extra 300 3 D plane,I watched it and my R/C but slowly started to comeback but the next day it turned very cold and windy.I currently sit at one lipo battery charge away from flying again. My radio is good and the plane is good. All I have to do is hook up my charger and charge a lipo, stick it in my plane and go fly,but it's much too cold. Burrrrr
Dunno about other countries but... Having flown models for more than 45 years now in the UK I think the current regulation we see is exactly what we should have expected. Modellers in the UK are a funny bunch and the vast majority have never been bothered to do much more than turn up at their field, fly, have a chat and a thermos of tea and go home again. Very few actually bother to do much for the hobby to be frank other than "consume" a little bit of it. This is reflected in the clubs where the same few members always end up being on the committees as no other members will bother. To balance the scales a little this is because many modellers do this a s hobby or pastime, and don't want to be involved in any stress or bother with something they love and I can understand that point of view. Over the years I've seen endless complaints about the BMFA's fees from modellers who just bought brand new cars, paid thousands for engines or radio gear! For example, complains about £40 for BMFA with all insurance etc and then spends £1700 on a new transmitter! Or the competition flier some years back who turned up to a competition and complained at the pilots briefing that the comp fees had risen from £5 to £6.50 per event( so the winner could actually have a trophy to take home at the end of the year!) having arrived in his brand new £30k car! So yeah, as the video says..... stop complaining and do something about it by getting involved, even if that just completing online polls or surveys from the governing bodies. If you just sit there and complain, then you'll get whatever's coming.
This is an unfortunate situation. I agree the tech will eventually catch up but 2 factors make me think it will be constrained. For economic viability of air taxis to really “ take off” the energy density of batteries needs to dramatically improve. 20-30 mins is not enough for intra city multi passenger craft, a safety margin needs to be built in and takeoff and hovering use dramatically more energy than horizontal flight. Inter city craft need 2 plus hours. These vertical takeoff craft have to transition very very rapidly to horizontal flight the energy cost is so great. Secondly the first time there’s a serious accident with either delivery or passenger drone craft the industry will take a big hit. People will not want delivery drones flying through neighborhoods and most will take a pass on the air taxi when they see footage of one dropping out of the sky. The advantages must be very high in time saved vs cost for the passenger drone industry to grow significantly. I certainly think it will but not as fast as expected. Unfortunately we have to live with regulations that might not appear to have a purpose for some time.
Good video, but I think some of that was not quite right. 1. It's not just old style RC fixed wing vs camera drones. There are three categories, those two, plus, in the middle freestyle/racing FPV quads, and those quads are much closer in risk profile to the RC flyers than the camera drones - because the flyers are mainly skilled and knowledgeable (you cant keep an acro quad in the air if you aren't). The key differentiator is the amount of auto-flight capability, which leads to very inexperienced people doing risky things without realising. 2. Yes, the national bodies caved in, but if they hadn't, it would have made no difference. I think, can't prove it of course, that if they'd fought they would have just gone down to glorious defeat. Sounds good, but no actual difference in result. 3. Those regulating bodies don't work for us, or at least, not us the flyers. They work for the government and the government is controlled by vested interests and voters. Both of those groups are mainly against us and they have more clout. We are tiny, of no significance, to be swept aside, or into a small corner. I think there do need to be different regulations, though to differentiate between the three groups, not two. But it's not going to happen. I predict the most likely outcome is ever more restricting rules, the virtual death of the hobby outside camera drones, which will become so automated they wont let anything bad happen, and just a few diehards will keep flying for flyings sake, regardless. Oh yes, tiny whoops indoors. They are quite fun, and the CAA don't control that - yet. In a way, the whole thing reminds me of that film 'the great Waldo Pepper'. In that the Robert Redford character in the post WW1 days was a barnstorming, wing walking free spirited flyer, who couldn't accept that flying was a now going to be a commercially regulated operation, and those halcyon days were gone forever. Well, that's about where we are.
@@Nkkdxn45j a very interesting post my thoughts around this too 👌and yes from a fixed wing warbird and jet pilot perspective with a little fixed wing 3d experience .. I would not be able to do the fpv precision flying thats a whole skill in itself and those of us that do feel compitent with flying and have worked hard to become natural know and appreciate the time learning and perfecting that skill is priceless 👍🏻
Here's a concept. Our mothers gave us a life. If not harming people ,property or animals then do what you want. You only get approx 80 summers to enjoy your time here. Don't spend your existence adhering to all the absurd things other humans want you to do so THEIR lives are spent better in their 80 summers. In the end, you don't want to end up on your death bed WISHING you had spent your time experiencing the world as it could've been. Do you think if you live following all rules that someone will give you an award or be there to help in hard times ? No...other humans just want control over you. What you read, think, say, type, act, what you eat, where you reside, how much money you can make etc ...
Yip I agree. Good end to the vid, making sure we know you ask to follow the skaters..... I am doing a vid of a build next door to me, I have permission from the owners which is a church, and other neighbours to fly over their properties to monitor the build, I also inform and ask anyone onsite before I fly over as well, and tell them they will be on video (just to cover my ass). No one usually has any issue, well I have never come across it yet, when you ask nicely. Usually I dont give much of a shit when I am at the club, I fly highish and over a maze paddock with planes and gliders, but when its a Quad with a camera, I am a little more cautious caus this is when the Karens explode, and ask if you just assumed their Gender (you know the pic lol). Love your support for the hobby, we do need you Bruce, and you have our support!!!!!
you'er Right. Its Not only is it that 85 LB Delivery drones can't/won't be able to fly in Windy Freezing weather or Rain or snow. 90% of Full Scale aircraft registerated in the USA aren't Certified to fly in such weather.
My previous comment didn’t take into account what country this was supposed to be in doesn’t look like the US. If it’s UK, you guys should try it over here for regulations. Put a remote camera on your RC plane and do FPV and you’ll be hooked!
You are 100% correct , unfortunately too many people are not prepared to stand up for fear of growing some . The national bodies have well and truly shafted us . They didn't even use lube , just straight up shafting . I am a member of a club , but I use it more as a backup. I fly at a couple of places away from built up areas and one place that is in the suburbs. Those that have done nothing will be crying very soon . Nobody to blame but themselves. If you do nothing , nothing happens , until someone with money comes along and then it's too late .
I have Quads, Planes, Cars, Boats, Lego you name it, so I have been around a while but when Drones went mainstream, commercial, things changed and not for the better. Just saying!
I started flying fpv about a year ago thanks to your enthusiasm. I love flying at the local park(s) and is another skill set on top of flying fixed wings. So, MFNZ, get over yourselves. Will I redo my wings badge, probably not given the test has very little to do with the rc flying I do. Now, back to learning acro mode.
Bruce. Good to see you. I'm afraid that the hobbyists and pilots are still being regulated out of the drone air space for drone delivery services. 😩😡💩 Cheers, Brendan
That is absolutely so true because I feel the same way I was sold out by the AMA here in the states they didn't do nothing to help us except for like you said collect the dues and fees and that's why I no longer renew my membership with them nor do I recommend it somebody's got to fly they just go to a open area and fly.
I think the real reason why they put "restrictions" on drones and rc aircraft is because of what's going on over in Ukraine and Israel. They are using drones and aircraft to deliver explosives with enough force to take out tanks. That's why if a drone is under a certain weight class, you don't have to register it. The government only gets concerned about larger drones that can carry a payload. Think about it, drones have been used in assassination attempts, smuggling drugs into prisons, sinking ships, and blowing up vehicles. They are treating larger drones/rc aircraft almost like firearms. If an incident happens with a drone, having to "get a license" (aka registration) gives them a starting point to find the individual.
Your video making keeps getting better mate, that was really well put together and edited. Great content, it shows the true reality of the situation for us hobbyists now. The flying at the end perfectly shows what 99% of us want to be left alone to do, without looking over our shoulder for the next Karen to waffle on about the 'rules and laws, have you got a license' bollox. It is no more dangerous than kids kicking balls in the park...honestly.
Thanks Rupert. Yeah, I wanted to demonstrate how you can be completely outside the regulations -- but totally safe -- so long as you follow the "don't endanger people, don't endanger property" goals. I have no doubt that CAA's mailbox will be full of complaints from my regular trolls (love you guys) but I think you'd have to be hard pressed to see how anyone was endangered by my activities on the day. Once again I seek to demonstrate that saftey is about more than rules.
If DJI had never showed up, the negative attention to idiots would of not been know to the public. Once something that seems like a slam dunk to a Senator the steam roller can't be stopped. The AMA did what they could given the hand they were dealt. RID is not a done deal by no means. You may see the BS go away. Flying since 1976 and AMA Member since 1980 I will continue my support. I'm glad I bought land years ago. At 64 I will continue to enjoy my hobby and not worry about all the noise being made!
i am sure you have heard about the spacex starship 7 explosing and debris raining down over the gulf of mexico which caused inconvenience to many civilian airliner flight paths. Its also funny you had said in a previous video only about a week earlier that space debris has a higher likelihood.
Hi Bruce, I still refused to register, I have been flying RC Airplanes for 55 years, and I know that it takes to fly and stay safe for everyone. I don't blame DJI, I blame the regulators who can't wait to get their pizza delivered by a drone. I will remain a member of AMA for the insurance, and the magazine, flying with Parkinson is a lot like C.P. Happy Flying Bruce.
I think the model hobby organizations thought they might boost the slowly declining members when these drones came more publicly available. They thought it would boost their influence on regulations. But as sentiment on drones shifted they were stuck with them and got themselves in to a corner. And start making rules based on fears of drones and pressure from lobbyists for their activities (amazone, alphabet, airtaxies and more). So I think problems started around 1985-1990 when computers came to town and kids lost interest in hobbies like model airplanes, trains and more. The drone “hype” was thought to get new interest in the hobby. This my opinion how we got here.
GPS Camera Drones Brought innovation and safety to all the oither disciplines . They literally save peoples lives on a daily basis. While freestyle has brought us bigger motors that have the sound of murdering a small child and might be what yould hear if a Dingo ate your baby. Flying them up and down the sides of tall buildings and monuments at 200mph just inches from windows and then always crashing them into and on top of buildings probably dont help much
They did that in the US, they won court cases that said the government can't regulate them, and that's what CBO rules are. I encountered this distinction when I started making models that fly over 100mph. I can fly all day under ama rules over 100 mph, but can't use my part107 or I'll be breaking the rules.
Free flight, control line. The AMA screwed us over. If you're going to be a member of a RC club, you have to have a AMA membership. The clubs have the FRIAs. I'm 65. I'm watching one of my favorite hobbies receive another death blow.
Just to be a bit controvercial - I'm going to keep flying. I dont' care what regulatiojns are in place trying to stop me, we will always find ways to get parts and peice them together.
to be fair, people in the hobby side never really imagined they needed to become nelson mandela to save the hobby. personally i made myself a little bubble where i live, i've spoken to hundreds of dog walkers and dozens of police, i'm the drone guy. i even stop for coffee or to do some shopping with my drone bag, showing people flight footage in the goggles has been a lot of fun for them and me, and it helps people to understand what its all about.
You’re not wrong in many points Bruce. ESP when is comes to money over the price of fun and future aviation generation. It has to start somewhere and not just on a sim. Heart rate has to pound and adrenaline has to pumpt to fully understand why we do what we love. Those that regulate and have never flown really shouldn’t be in a position of governance.
Have you considered adding a bit more deadband and/or Expo to counteract the mid stick Parkinson's jitters? There's no reason you can't enjoy smooth flight video while going straight.
I'm already running as much expo as I can without running into other issues (such as becoming way-too-touchy with larger stick inputs. My solution is just to exercise more. At my last location (the skate park) my fingers were much better. The exercise produces endorphins and endorphis stimulate the production of dopamine which is lacking in Parkinson's sufferers. That's why I work out and walk a lot -- it helps immensely.
Your right about the delivery drones. They are in China now and I have heard in America too. But the regulations are getting crazy. No issue with registration No issue with loging flight paths (not filing before) Even no issue with a 249g limit. But the continued changes of where we can fly is getting crazy. The rules change faster than I change my undies.
Bruce you should offer a free service to survey your neighbours' roofs for damage with the drone. Supply them with a clip each year or after suspected storm damage, insurance companies would love you.
Yeah, did you notice that the playground was *totally* empty. As I said in a recent video, choose your time and place so as to avoid people. If there's nobody there, there's nobody to endanger. It was quite a hot day (for a change) so most people were at home enjoying their airconditioning. Stupid old me was walking 25Km and having fun with drones :-)
RC has experienced a perfect storm resistance. Inexpensive, lightweight, quiet planes that could be flown anywhere were creating a golden era for RC. But this meant the AMA was losing its business model. Then, drone histaria took hold while in the shadows, business latched onto the idea of delivery drones. Governments were attacked by lobbyists from all sides. Karen wanted protection, AMA wanted regulations, businesses wanted restrictions, and politicians wanted to be re-elected. Hobbyists just wanted to be left alone, but we were in the minority. We never had a chance.
There is a BIG difference between an object that will take off from a patio, and airplanes the need SPACE. Drones were the problem from the start. Almost sounds like your defending this shit. There needs to be a line drawn declaring the difference between a quad copter and an airplane that has a 6 foot wingspan.
@@xjet Yes i agree with you all the way 100%...
Testicular fortitude 😂🤗🤭🫡
🎯
AMA has failed the modelling community.
Yup - after years I let my membership lapse and decided instead to get my membership with the FPV Freedom Coalition
I am no longer an AMA member. In the western US there are no FRIA’s anyway. Maybe a weekend trip to fly for 15 minutes. What a joke.
Did u pass or even care to pass? Seems like some bs. 48 years in the skies...perfect example of a rc pilot who knows his ahit forwards and backwards
people in the us have to take a part 107 FAA test most of that, is the same as an actual pilot, you need to be able to read the aviation maps, understand landing patterns, runway numbers , understand NOTAM's , read and understand the weather updates that are given in code by local airports, understand altimeters, then all the laws of aircraft plus the laws for a drone, seems like you are just whining about a simple test! passed it 98%
@@imyourocd
You miss the point, it's the government overreach, the constant creep of overregulation in every aspect of life by the useless.
The younger generation is too busy on their phones and computers watching videos the older generation is making.
They are to busy saving to earn the 2% deposit to buy a house and compete in a society that is against them to survive
All by design! The content that is promoted is mindless too...
Fpv: You can play outside while being inside.
@@AlexanderKA-i4w Don't want to be inside when I play outside-being outside is all part of the fun!
I think one of the problems is big business, such as Amazon who want to use drones for delivery. They are the ones demanding “our airspace”. Of course money talks and if you throw enough money at these regulators, they’ll do whatever these companies want.
Exactly
Absolutely
Rrrrrr matey 🏴☠️ we fly the black flag
idk about this growing up in the US flying rc was always illegal off a ama field, a faa drone pilot can fly almost anywhere with permission and have valuable services like tower, powerline, bridge inspections, aquaculture, topography, mining, emergency like finding lost people, inspection of devastation sites from earthquake to hurricane to wildfires to find survivors the list goes on , seem like a bunch of bitches that don't see the real value.....
also it can be fun and instead of just providing nothing of value you could provide something of value.
“Oh no,
wasn’t me.😅” With all the times you went before the counsel they probably have flyers with your mug on them to ask the guy if he recognizes you.
I agree the BMFA in UK just bent over and said go on as hard as you like CAA
I totally agree-the BMAA effectively rolled over with virtually no serious stand made against this bullshit from the CAA-and it is bullshit as it is impossible to police and therefore enforce.
I gave up flying r/c about 10 years ago due to a person complaining to the local council . The issue was not our fault but a farmers son flying nearby on there own field and at all times of the day . I tried to explain but ended up loosing my field ...so i sold everything and got a flight simulator ....not the same 😢😢😢😢
*_"we have a situation where we've been sold out by national modifying bodies haven't represented our interests or our rights haven't protected"_*
Bruce, you are 100% correct and here in the U.S. the *_AMA did the same thing to us!!!_*
A medical?
@@xjet 40 people or more drowned in new Zealand last year. Why don't we have swimming licences?
Very enjoyable video Bruce! I completely agree with you and I did leave the AMA several years ago. Fortunately, we have a small private airfield locally to fly our fixed wing gas and electric planes. I fly my DJI and Potensic drones in my neighborhood and fortunately, our neighbors are fine with it. Please keep your great videos coming my friend.
i love flying rc planes and drones its good for your health and well being. no hesi
LOST !!! ...
More of the epidemic of self-importance and entitlement
Glad to see you out and about getting fresh air for some fresh new ideas for us Thx Bruce. 👍
I live for the summer. Unfortunately I can't bank any of it for the winter so I'll just make the most of it while I can.
Eventually we will be left with only remote rural flying, and pirate flying.
I could never condone pirate flying :-P
Poor you, it's crappie world now. Love from England. In the summer I will get in trouble over flying my kite 😮❤
Thanks Chris, your generosity is much appreciated.
Excellent video! 👍
the ending was awesome sitting outdoors under a tree with nature, ..."Blinded". 😂
Additionally a man has already went to jail for shooting one as well
This is why i deregistered from all the Australian body's i was a member of a few years ago.
Agree Bruce. We have been marginalised by our own associations.
This down to the fact that it:
- could proffer joy and happiness to one or many people without regulatory constraints
- encouraged manual dexterity
- was a precursor to stronger technical obsessions and skills development
- could, when combined with AI lead to the total destruction of Shropshire by autonomous craft
- could be used virtually anywhere without being able to be tracked
- could function fully without any connection to the Cloud
- used 100% recycled material thereby precluding any requirement to outlay monies
- could if correctly configured be used to carry contraband to UK prisons
:-) :-)
Bruce it's time you returned to OZ. You have outgrown the pettiness of the Kiwi mind.
@Bruce, it's good to see you flying again.
We are all slaves to a Pharaoh, building Green Pyramids to Mars
People in positions of power and authority in this country often forget that they work FOR the public and should work WITH the public and stakeholders to produce the best outcome.
You have to love how Remote ID turned out to just be an absolute joke. I'm so happy I never bought into that nonsense.
Hey Bruce, just wanted to say we love you. Thanks for your content.
That park with the lake is beautiful. Good on ya Tokoroa
WOuld love you too do a in detail video on Gyroflow. Got a RC Thumb Pro W and I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but the footage looks worse when its finished.
oldguyFPV; I strap a copy of the “Bill of Rights” to my quad, and I’m good to go! Fly safe, fly free!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Glad you finally found kids playing OUTSIDE! I was getting worried with all the empt playgrounds.
To be fair... it was a pretty hot day and only an idiot would be out and about at 3pm in the afternoon :-)
Yhey actively did things agianst us while saying they were defending us.
super Fun Flying Heaps. Love it. Great Talk and Super Fun Flying. 100% Thank YOU. Staying Tuned
Hi Bruce quick question about to get my first real drone in AU not interested in DJI at all looking at one of the Emax Tiny Hawk 3 models any good as a learner drone ??
I only had the original Tiny Hawk but it flew really well.
Great footage sir, thanks for sharing. FPV flying getting you outside for fresh air and exercise.
Put a remote camera on your RC plane and do FPV and you’ll be hooked!
those kids at the skate park are going to love being immortalized on film in years to come
Totally agree with you Bruce!…
I’m still waiting for regulations for dustbin Lorry’s , they have four wheels and flies!!..
Haha... I see what you did there!
Great video Bruce, Annie is also my spotter aswel
Bruce. Good to see you. I'm afraid that the hobbyists and pilots are still being regulated out of the drone air space for drone delivery services. 😩😡💩 Cheers, Brendan
The AMA failed to adapt with the changing hobby, they left the drone pilots out in the cold to be eaten by the regulators..
Badges? We don't got not badges. We don't got to show you no stinkin' badges!
ruclips.net/video/4OcM23Hbs5U/видео.html
On point as always!
WOOLWORTHS! Sadly went bust in the UK years ago. Spent lots of pocket money in there when I was a kid 😊
Sorry Bruce, I did listen to your points and 100% agree but couldn't help being distracted by a hit of nostalgia 😂
i am sure you have heard about the spacex starship 7 explosing and debris raining down over the gulf of mexico which caused inconvenience to many civilian airliner flight paths. Its also funny you had said in a previous video only about a week earlier that space debris has a higher likelihood.
Yep, it's got so bad recently that I was thinking of running a regular video titled *"what fell from space this week?"* :-)
didnt expect that good stuff mate cheers
Hi Bruce, I still refused to register, I have been flying RC Airplanes for 55 years, and I know that it takes to fly and stay safe for everyone. I don't blame DJI, I blame the regulators who can't wait to get their pizza delivered by a drone. I will remain a member of AMA for the insurance, and the magazine, flying with Parkinson is a lot like C.P. Happy Flying Bruce.
I haven't flown a model for quite some time. This news has me thinking about getting back in just to say NO!!!
I really enjoyed this content, keep up the good work, Bruce.
Flying them up and down the sides of tall buildings and monuments at 200mph just inches from windows and then always crashing them into and on top of buildings probably dont help much
Agreed!
I must say that why i fly my rc planes in the UK the public seem to accept them...obviously not the CAA public.
to be fair, people in the hobby side never really imagined they needed to become nelson mandela to save the hobby. personally i made myself a little bubble where i live, i've spoken to hundreds of dog walkers and dozens of police, i'm the drone guy. i even stop for coffee or to do some shopping with my drone bag, showing people flight footage in the goggles has been a lot of fun for them and me, and it helps people to understand what its all about.
Very well put and 💯 agree!
No issue with registration
No issue with loging flight paths (not filing before)
Even no issue with a 249g limit.
But the continued changes of where we can fly is getting crazy.
The rules change faster than I change my undies.
Bruce you should offer a free service to survey your neighbours' roofs for damage with the drone.
Supply them with a clip each year or after suspected storm damage, insurance companies would love you.
I feel sad for my very young grand kids. By the time they are old enough, none of this hobby will be available.
I have say that in NZ with a population of less than 5.5 million people against 66 in the UK ,you are really fortunate!
