It's so emotional when you actually realise this was the last 'normal' interaction Johnny would ever have with his BROTHER and he knew it. His childhood friend, his family, all the shared memories of their life before the sick, it would just be him and he was willing to make that sacrifice, singing a song him and his brother sang in his past. He knew it was a goodbye song, He assumed for the general, shame it was the other way around.
What gets me the most is that the last men never made it back to bury him. No one but gus and Rani (who is dying) will ever know who he really was.
This is my favourite moment from the entire show.

i love how he starts out as a creepy uncomfortable weirdo, but slowly you start to realize how sympathetic his situation is. He's complicit in murder and torture, because up until his death he lived for his brother. It almost felt honorable. He had the same drive as everyone else: family. And the tragedy is that when he finally "let him go" he also loses any opportunity to have a real connections. He died on the side of the fascists with no one who knew what he tried to do or knew him enough to care. Even his relationship with the scientist's wife to me seemed like it was built on manipulation. I think it kind of tries into the theme that family is people you care about, not necessarily blood. The path to hell and such.
In the comic apparently he doesnt die and become a very important character later on. Hopefully he somehow lives in the series too

I know, he's so lovely. Weird that no one seems to know who he is! Johnny is played by Marlon Williams - I thought he was well known! At least in Australia and NZ - I've seen him live a couple of times, he's gorgeous!

I like how after this scene Abbot never takes off his glasses after killing his brother truly showing his lost all his humanity and become truly evil you can tell by the way he looks at his brother for the last time on the helicopter its just Muah 💋 so good.
Another thing to note relates to the last part of the lyrics, where it says "I am leaving, I am leaving, but the fighter still remains". In this, we can relate to the departure of the loving brother in Johnny and the humanity in the General, both leaving only the fighters

The rawness of this version made me appreciate the soul of the song for the first time. I am seriously looking forward to Marlon Williams recording a full cover.

we were watching this series with my 9 yr old daughter, and as soon as the song came, we both were like: oh, this is such a beautiful song! She loved it and I loved it. We searched the original and honestly, Marlon Williams cover is the best! we deserve the full cover :)
Johnny was wonderful and his version of The Boxer brought tears to my eyes. However, as someone who's worked in biotech for almost 30 years...those syringes, at room temp for lord knows how long, are toast.
lol especially the pipette technique of extending the neck of it into the 15ml conical tubes while trying to find the cure.

What a kind hearted soul. Getting through your past as a boy abused by your father only to be "saved" by your psychopathic brother who you feel responsible for, being the good person you are. And in the end feeling you need stay to be there for him only to die in such a way.
What a beautiful interpretation of the song and the emotion fits so well with this horrible feeling now knowing he dies by the hand of his brother who didn't feel him worthy living in this world.
I need the whole song! And am I still the only one hoping that Johnny somehow survived? ❤❤❤

I agree with others, this was my favorite part in the whole series. Never did I think he would do such a wonderful job singing. It broke my heart what his brother did, I really think they could've let him live and it not effect the movie negatively.

A lot of people wanna hear a full cover, also saying this is a better version than the original one, and I disagree: the beauty of the scene is behind the perfect nesting of all elements that composed it, and the short timing of what's happening . I was totally upset! However, the emotional ingredient IS the title chosen, which deals with a theme that matches with the experiences of a lot of characters. We do love this scene because of nostalgia power of this song for many of us, hugely empowered by context, whereas original one is timeless and intimate, it exacerbates our feeling at the moment we listen to and that is genius.
A huge good job to Sweet Tooth team for this wonderful scene (and show), a big congrats to Marlon W. who totally caught the “thing” that needed to be shared, and thank to S&G’s original song which remains for me one of the greatest pieces of music written in the last century.

What I love about this cover is that there is no music. It is completely Acappella in the opening. Then the music is added. for me The perfect cover would be to open just as he did, and then when they get to the part that is “Li la la” and the percussion in the background that we hear in the original Simon and Garfunkel cover. If I could find a version that gives me that it would be the perfect adaptation of this song.

Haunting, beautiful scene. I hate abbot's character and johnny should've left him but this scene is one of the best in the entire show. It also led me to this song again.
