  • Spielban marked the end of an era for the Metal Heroes franchise. After five years, Shouzo Uehara stepped away from being the series’ headwriter and was replaced with Susumu Takaku. Takaku had been a writer going back a decade to Spectreman, Inazuman, Gorenger, and JAKQ, and then became a co-writer with Uehara on Spider-Man. He also was the head writer for Golion, the show that would become Lion Voltron. The idea was to make a series akin to that of Kikaider, but with their own spin on it, taking up the title of Super Android Metalder. Unlike what had come before it, Takaku wanted to take Metalder into a more serious direction, having the show revolve around a plot that stemmed from World War II. Finally, if you are not aware, Metalder was the source material for Ryan Steel and the villains of VR Troopers’ first season. Does Takaku have what it takes to make a show on equal footing with Uehara’s quintet? Or did Toei make a big mistake when they hired him? Watch to find out.

    I liked Metalder a lot and have no problems with your final verdict, because the mood, music and story kept me intrigued so much that i embraced its shortcomings. Thank you for doing a video on the series. It is a hardcore fan favorite and I wish it finished at the classic long 51 episode.
    Top Gundar is more like a honorable Hakaider as his color scheme and choice of weapon is a give away.
    My favorite episode is with the reformed Hammer Ben-K reformed as a buddist monk saving future Ninja Manabu/Tiger Ranger Boi.
    There is a two parter with all the JAC alumni appearing, besides Kenji Ohba, there’s Hiroshi Watari, Junichi Hurata and Lady Diana Makoto Sumikawa.

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork being a while to recall but I really liked the ones focused on Top Gunder. You mentioned a very good one too. I liked/enjoyed the series but I have the same issues. Yep, the hero was a cyborg/couldnt emote as much, but we already saw alot series with the same type of character where writers managed to develop something.. Not even need to look Into other series, on Metalder we have mecha vilains that were give the chance/able to give us something to connect with them. But since Im not a big fan of metal heroes formula (Im way more a fan of Sentai), Metalder stood out to me.

  • @2rrkd
    @2rrkd 2 месяца назад +5

    This show could be an argument for why the cliche 'monster of the week' formula is actually a good idea. While having every monster in the show at the same time is a striking image, having them in every episode makes things confusing, especially if they get brought back to life without explanation (personally I think it's because there's so many they couldn't keep track of who was destroyed).
    So what's next? Gonna review Speilban to complete the VR Troopers? Moving onto B-Fighters?

    Always remember this series to be a homage to kikaider and hakaider more so than it’s saban counterpart because of metalder and topgunder. The neros transformation was also very scary back then and it’s on par with the 80s sentai villains like turboranger emperor lagorn. Looking bad it’s ridiculous how big neros different factions are, but still can beat one robot. Along with jiraiya, it might be last recognizable season before the two B fighters seasons. The following season like Janperson, blue swat, and the others always feel like they are trying to be robocop like other of b movies from Asian countries during that time period.

    It definitely got better as time moved on. Sometimes, if not the majority of the time, the villains got the spotlight. There are really dark plots throughout, leading up to a rather unique finally. It’s not a perfect show but it’s not bad by any means.

  • @disneyboy3030

    I do want to say that I wonder how you would’ve reacted to the original ending where Metalder and the Robot Dog would’ve sacrificed themselves to end God Nero’s by blowing him up with a bazoka, causing he Ghost Bank to explode and take them with it while also killing he remaining forces.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  2 месяца назад

      If they fully actually fleshed out the purpose of why Neros did not want anyone know who he was originally, I'm sure it would have been fine. That is one of my problems though. They go through the entire series of him talking about how no one must know who he is, but nothing happened when they did. It was just like, "Oh, that's who he is... why do I care?" Plus, I didn't like how Top Gunder could get his face blown off and be fine, but then one little sword cut kills him.

    • @disneyboy3030
      @disneyboy3030 2 месяца назад

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetworkactually they were going to do that in the original full run that was planned with it being revealed that someone else was helping God Neros. Neros saying that he was going to "Shrowd himself in the Darkness of the Night" was even a hint to this. In fact the novelization even hints it at the end. But the cancelation effected those plans.

    At this point you might as well as watch the original kikaider. One of the lesser work of Ishinomori just because it didn’t spawn a franchise out of it. There's two live action seasons, an short anime, and a grim reboot movie that was promoted in one Gaim episode just like how Gavan was promoted in sentai around that time period. The actor that played him in the modern reboot is just as robotic as Metalder. Also, there’s a lot of kamen rider series old and new to cover after you’re done with ultraman and sentai.

      @@TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork Yes. I've really never seen it to say if it's a well written or well produced show but one reason i like it is because it's one awesome looking show. The costumes look extremely well made, the sets, effects. Very different looking show that stands out compared to all the other tokusatso shows. But yes, I've seen enough clips to agree that the portrayal of Ryusei Tsurugi is kind of bland. No emotion, no personality. But maybe it is attributed to him being an android. 2:20, the show was like MMPR but unlike the global phenomenon, VR Troopers at times was a bit more serialized and more serious in tone compared to MMPR where sometimes, the monster would either want to betray their leader Grimlord or one of the beaten monster would force the hero to kill them, even creepily stating 'My LIFE HAS NO MEANING!!'. Way different than the more simple kill monsters at the end of a PR episode at the time.
    3:34, also he looks like the Gobot Destroyer. A lot of these goobers look like they'd end up in Machine Robo/Gobots.
    Then again, Katsushi Murakami was not only the designer to Golion/Voltron but he was also the father of Machine Robo and the Metal Heroes as well as Metalder so designs of him would make him similar to that of his other works. Metalder does look like if R-Jetan was stripped of his pink armor in the Battlehackers anime.
    4:02, if that's worse...check out Changerion. XD Funny enough that you mentioned VR Troopers, I honestly wish Changerion was also used as VR Troopers but season 3.
    5:13, Meteor saber?
    5:58, ruclips.net/user/clipUgkxw8lRCA4HOcHs9UZvxRHBca_ijg7ebiA7?si=WiWVQWpghEZDQV39
    7:30, I guess whoever in Saban productions saw this knew there was potential which was why Cybertron was a thing until it was decided that mixing in Spielban had to be made considering some of the characters...yeah, not do much for anyone tbh. At least Jeb wasn't in the stock footage and was basically comic relief in VR Troopers.
    11:18, give my regards to Grimlord!! Aye-set-aiya!!!
    12:26, good thing about robots is that they change their voice boxes. Think Galvatron from the classic movie and the cartoon.
    15:10, what the?! I didn't know Spiderman played the villain! 0_- Again, the America comment on Metalder's design is spot-on. Nice going, man!
    16:22, o.o Whoa.
    18:06, Rotail is surprisingly a higher rank than Bebop and Rocksteady there? Neat.
    20:14, I imagine Masako Nozawa doing Geldling for some reason. The Goku Black voice would do well too.
    Majority of the designs here was done by Yasuhiro Moriki too. He's done things for Rayearth, Sonic X(yes, no joke), Dekaranger, Gobusters and Xardion, that weird SNES game. Why I'm mentioning this? Because Good Smile announced a model kit of Xardion will be coming soon. If you love Metalder and the Ghost Bank troops, you'll certainly love Xardion's model kit.
    23:38, ah yes...Tyler Steele, is it?
    The Ghost Bank was impressive that they made a play set for it when the show came out along with some of their troops and yes, including Top Gunder. VR Troopers also had some toys too to further immortalize some of the characters too.
    RIP JDF and Ichiro Mizuki.
    31:20, yeah and considering what happens during the time of its production, anime was picking up a lot of steam full-force. Shows like Z Gundam and Transformers was a huuuge hit in Japan during the time, a lot of mecha fans were possibly tuning into the show for the mecha designs. This was also the time the OVA boom was huge.
    My only thought process here...could the Metal heroes be revived in some things like V-cinemas or the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club?
    33:51, a show like this in this era would certainly be quite something considering heroes have since been falling from favor for some stupid reason. People know toku heroes are gonna be the victors so something like this would go well with the likes of Kaiju No. 8, Godzilla and Go Go loser ranger.
    37:50, my guess was that during the first episodes, there was a repair bay at the Ghost Bank just like one from Machine Robo Cronos which is the reason why most of the villains would come back as if nothing happened.

    Honestly I think I feel the same way about Metalder I did about Kamen Rider Stronger, I like villains more than the hero. I'm not saying I hated Metalder or his design (I appreciate the homage to Kikaider), but I mostly enjoyed and appreciated Neros and their designs, and I've always been a fan of villain groups with factions (though I agree the mechas should've been group together, cyborg or not.

The male sidekick feel like he’s always trying to cosplay and impersonate kamen rider black just without the combat skill. The early episode does feel grand with all the monster suits with actual stunt actors inside the big villain lair. On the surface, it does not have a complex set of hero casts and while it is detrimental the amazingly done set of villains make up for it. The WWII aspect even if barely tackled upon is a unique and fresh concept however the series really get shitted upon due to its horrid finale.

      I think the WWII aspect not being fully fleshed out is the biggest crime of all. They did all of this stuff to reveal Neros' identity, but it amounted to nothing. LIke one early episode Neros was trying to hide who his WWII identity was, but for what reason? It didn't make sense since it had no relevancy on the show's outcome.

      And there is nothing wrong with that. I'm glad you were able to enjoy it. What was your favorite episode?
      I'll get to B-Fighter eventually.

    considering it was the 80's maybe his flying car is a gas guzzler thus he rarely used it to save his robot money.

      Nothing wrong there. I'm hoping maybe if Discotek releases it I will enjoy it a second time, but I was really bored with it this viewing.

    Me and my gf watched Metalder and she couldn't get through it so I finished it and it was meh. We're almost done with Speilvan and we're loving it. Once we're done with that we're going continue Janperson and then on to Exceedraft. 😀
