    Many many years ago I had the incredible experience of watching the sun come up over Cairo, from the top of the great pyramid of Khufu. This video reminds me of that dawn. So many layers of cloud, smog, and haze lifting before the reveal of something beautiful and stunning. You are a great creator Eric, and I know I'll take any of your thoughtful ideas to heart. Thanks!

    A truly insightful video into the process of self-identification on RUclips. A value proposition has to be specific and more than simply "I'm the value" or something entirely personality based. Who we are informs what and how we deliver our content; a hierarchical conceptualization of a value proposition can only help with niche finding.

    Eric... this is so THOUGHTFUL lol. No but seriously, I’m currently in the midst of redirecting- or at least pinpointing exactly what I’m channel is about and WHO it is for. And this was incredibly helpful. This series so far has also encouraged me to just start creating again with the sole purpose of figuring out what exactly are the ingredients I’m working with. And eventually, I’ll find what delicious RUclips smoothie I can bring to the table lol

  • @camshand

    Dude when you said it's not about limiting yourself, and clarifying who you already are and really care about that hit home so hard!
    I've been doing RUclips for over a year now and have become stuck in not wanting to be "another Tech RUclipsr" but also loving all things Tech. But more recently realised I want my videos to be Inspiring, to make people think about Tech Differently, the WHY of the product. And so from even that extra layer, I've been able to align my motivation behind the videos more as I know what the videos will be for. Of course, I'll have the general reviews, but it's the way my opinion will be given that makes all the difference. But I really struggled with thinking I was limiting myself, boxing off the possibilities but in reality, it really made me feel freer, to not get halfway into a project and feel unmotivated as it wasn't something I truly am. Keep up the good work Eric, I'm getting huge value from your videos, and can really appreciate the effort and time you're putting into them.

    • @EricWen
      @EricWen  4 года назад +1

      Wow thanks so much for the thoughtful comment Cam. You're asking yourself the right questions and making sure you're not forcing a box you're not happy with long term. Really respect that and I think your future audience will appreciate that. It is very important for us to be inspired by where we're headed and what we make. Yes, niching down and being specific is also important...but so is your own voice in the equation. Keep refining and honing. I meant what I said about it's not limiting, it's clarifying. I would love to see how you share the why of a product and the creative ways you explore that. Seems like a winning direction to me!

    Eric, Thank you! I'm in the drafting phase of my youtube channel. I've had a catering company (on the side) for about 8 years, and I'm trying to grow my brand to include more than just food. Other passions include organization (yes, I'm a project manager lol ), music, creating special moments, creating beautiful ambiance/aesthetics, and generally, entertaining others... This is helpful. Still incredibly daunting. Sometimes I am just flooded with ideas, and sometimes I just don't even know what I'm trying to do. I appreciate these points of discussion. I'm looking forward to hearing more. I think the real fact of the matter is a lot of people won't go far because they won't take the time that is necessary to figure it out, and they aren't innovating, they are just doing what has worked for so many others. Your enthusiam is contagious. But I'm still scared that maybe I just don't have what it takes. Maybe asking myself these questions just leads nowhere. Daaang where did all this depressing stuff come from. I guess that's just the language fear. Fear says it's safer to not try. If you don't try and don't push then you have an excuse for not making anything of yourself. Funnily enough, that is one of my big passions, to reach out to those stuck by fear and loneliness and build community. Well, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk. It's been swell.

    • @qmakesithappen
      @qmakesithappen 4 года назад +1

      I completely understand your train of thought Kate as far as fear goes. I was once there and in my personal opinion I think you have to find your tribe. Be as vulnerable, open, and honest in your vids as you were in your "Ted Talk" comment lol once a few people are moved by your message the momentum from that must be capitalized upon. I know you have what it takes 💪😁🏁

    • @EricWen
      @EricWen  4 года назад

      I get what you're saying completely. I didn't over dramatize it in the video, but when I said I was scared and stressed about this before - I mean there were lots of tears too with that. It is scary! You are figuring it out, little step by little step. You have so much to offer. So much unbelievable potential. Being scared is ok. Silencing all that potential...or listening to those fearful voices too much, that can lead to some not ok results. You've got this my friend! I think you should try structuring your channel with community and encouragement as the bottom layers of your hierarchy! You do that so naturally and it's your super power! The rest of those top layers you can figure that out more and more over time!

    Thank you. Should I continue making videos even though I'm lost? My interest areas are varied and maybe not related. For ex- I'm interested in Organic Food, Travel videos about my hometown, finding the right angle when doing photography, minimalism in your home, super mario video games, using art to express yourself, and non toxic lifestyle 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ I've made video idea lists, I could make videos on all of these topics and I would love it, but I'm feeling so confused about myself and what I should do. I don't want to waste time making random videos because I know to be successful, you need a niche, so I'm just feeling completely stuck.

    • @EricWen
      @EricWen  4 года назад

      To be successful you don’t just need a niche, you need to have experience honing your voice, experience and craft. You need to explore more before you can pick well what’s the right fit for you. You’re still in the early stages of building. Find more ingredients by exploring and practicing and you’ll feel less lost! In part 3 I talk about other strategies that might be able to help you. It seems you’re really comfortable listing literal topics of interest, maybe try finding more non-literal insights about your skills and don’t worry if it’ll help you grow yet. In part 1 I say, there’s a big difference in making a smoothie vs selling a smoothie. Try some of the other strategies in part 3! Hope that can help!

    Do you have a video on how you create your thumbnails?
    They are really interesting. Lol.
    I struggled with the idea of who my videos are for too...
    My duh moment came after hosting a series of polls, and I saw that most of my RUclips subscribers are just like me... the biggest difference is that most of them don't look like me.
    But women ages 20-35ish who are primarily introverted, Pagan or atheist, usually of a Christian background despite this.
    Another thing about my subscribers is that they are very well read, and they like to understand things way in depth.
    And again, that was brought on due to my own behaviors.
    I am a major book worm. I also get REALLY OBSESSIVE about anything I am learning... and right now I am learning/relearning the technical stuff.

    Great video, Eric! I'll be honest, in my case creating a YT channel was easy because it was more of a brand expansion of my photography website DigitalWorldBeauty dot com. But I still needed to make sure people understand what my channel is about, especially since the word "beauty" confuses people into thinking it's a beauty, not photography-related channel. (I even had to add "photography tips" next to my channel name lol.)
    To do that, within the first 45-60 seconds I mention that my channel is for photo enthusiasts, where I share the tips and tools for becoming a better photographer and specifically saying that on my channel I talk about tech gear reviews, course recommendations and how-to tutorials. As you can see, this makes it crystal clear what DWB channel is about.
    However, my true passion is travelling as a language student and this is what I want to create another channel about and it requires that I think more about how to position myself on RUclips and really target the right audience. Your video gave me some insights how I can go about it.
    Thanks for sharing, Eric!

      You got it! Thanks so much for sharing! I took a look at your channel! Great job getting to the point when you speak! I'd recommend trying to design thumbnails that can storytell without text. Your thumbnails look great with some time, but you want to be able to communicate your point when people are scrolling very quickly by your thumbnail!

    • @CrushingPhotography

      @@EricWen Thanks for having a look at my channel and sharing your thoughts! Always am open for constructive feedback :) I'll be honest, thumbnails are a bit of a challenge like I have to force making faces lol. But guess over time I'll get better and will keep in mind trying to tell a story with the thumbnails as if there was no text. Thanks, Eric!

      @EricWen  4 года назад

      The new channel or new direction for your channel could be so much bigger and have higher potential than you think! :) Don't be too hard on yourself! Remember Mr. Beast started with gaming videos....imagine if he had stopped there or not experimented getting on camera himself!

    • @Halcylion
      @Halcylion 4 года назад

      @@EricWen Personally, I am still experimenting with my channel. I cannot abandon it until the experiment is concluded and go try something else, especially since this is the type of content is what I've always wanted to make. For better or worse, I'm stuck in this oversaturated niche until the end of this year... maybe longer if there's any delays on titles I await. If it doesn't work 'till then, it's time to take a long break, get a job, and eventually learn how to balance the two, even experiment with other types of content.
      I can say your channel helps me steer mine in the right direction, so thank you for your videos!

    I just settled to call the stuff I make "conscious travel content" - now after hearing you say thoughtful over and over again I want to get back to "thoughtful travels" 😂 mind giving me your opinion? I like that pyramid scheme. Will try it for myself, tend to still lose direction here and there

    • @EricWen
      @EricWen  4 года назад +1

      I think you're a super thoughtful creator - and that's gotta be a part of your content for sure! It's one of your super strengths! I'd dig around for more layers so that you clearly know what the 10+ layers above thoughtful are. Thoughtful's a great bottom layer, but clarity about what else specific you're bringing to the conversation, what patterns you have in your conent etc..that's also super important. Lmk if there's more I can clarify in a DM or something! Maybe hearing your struggles more in depth could help Part 3!
