Specialty Baristas will never be replaced by robots because aside from quality of the beverages the SPECIALTY barista function is to entertain/provide knowledge regarding coffee itself.
how is this different from a vending machine? why should i pay extra for a robot arm to retrieve my coffee... from a vending machine... when i can grab it myself? you do know there are vending machines that make tea and coffee. people!
my thoughts as well. it looks like a nice vending machine.. with a robotic arm handing it to me. I'm all for good vending machines, with roasters checking the quality of the recipe and good beans, but having a robotic arm pass it to me seems a bit unnecessary / overkill (albeit novel)
the point is that it operates an espresso machine. a normal vending machine, i assume, does not have the equipment to make proper espresso. i have the espresso bug right now, so stumbled onto here.. so the point is that the robot is acting as a barista and can make all these espresso drinks that require labor and adding milk/etc. but what i don't get is that this doesn't seem to directly solve the problem of automating espresso drinks. it's just robot that makes espresso. i guess that is the point coming from TechCrunch, it's more about the robotics than the domain problem... then you have to reprogram for different espresso machine dimensions/operations. and a bunch of companies trying to fit their specs just to get rid of the barista... this is like building a robot to physically do your taxes with pen and paper.
I think this coffee shop is an interesting idea. I pass by it on my way to work in San Francisco, but have never tried it myself. Being able to order drinks on an app and have it be ready by the time I get to the store reminds me of how Starbucks works. Cafe X is adapting to how other coffee shops work. It makes me wonder if this kind of technology will ultimately hurt the amount of jobs that are available? There are already many people who cannot find work and I worry that places like this who rely more on technology will further jeopardize this problem.
It happened before when industrialization hit, many people lost jobs to mass product manufacturing, though later new niches were created for the them, I think it might be the same with robots coming to all our life fields there will be new types of jobs for regular people.
I am curious to know the purpose of the robotic arm. all it seems to do is serve the cup which I would figure be done by conveyor belt or something. does barista style coffee require actual handling to get that unique taste? is it just cheaper to buy barista equipment and just replace the actual barista? is it merely a gimmick to woo they lay folk towards the brand and that whole contraption can be replaced with a standard coffeemaker with equal quality?
Exactly, you don't need this stupid robotic arm that takes away too much space. They just try to make it look "high tech" and hope someone throw millions of $ at them.
James Wang then again they did say they got actual baristas to help prgram in recepies and if it is anything like current robot training they actually mover and manouver the robot arm throuh the motions letting the machine replicate the steps percicly. so maybe it's my first suggestion of having authentic barista style coffee which requires physical handling thus a dexterious arm is needed.
i don't see the point of having a fancy robot arm making the coffee, this can be done in the form of a vending machine with much less cost. It's a good marketing gimmick, though. Another company has built a machine that is able to cook like a pro chef is far more attractive i think.
I think the Nerds' greatest revenge, was engineering robots to take the jobs away from the common proletariat, whom they deemed as bullies throughout school.
🤣 Good one. Actually, it gets harder and harder to find people for these jobs (certainly here in Europe), so in a way these concepts are not only cheaper, they are able to provide a service at all if you don't find anyone from the proletariat because they are all "business consultants" now.
I don't see it misspelling names. I guess that's the human touch that it's missing. Seriously though, I wish it could handle reusable mugs, not just disposables.
Why have a robotic arm, you ask? It's the best way of making sure the machine doesn't spill the coffee. If it used a conveyor belt, if would be too shaky and the cup would tip over.
That's a question of how you control the movement of the conveyor. It makes the whole unit more flexible. In future, the robot arm could operate two coffee makers, grab a chocolate bar of your choice from a shelf and maybe even wash up the returned, reusable cups which I am missing here. That is something which is very complicated to achieve with conventional mechanical components. The robot arm just needs a few new lines of code (yes that needs to be done as well but overall, it's cheaper). Flexibility is clearly an advantage of robots.
They custom built the machine, not the robot itself. You cant build a robot out of just sheet metal...... It appears to be some sort of MELFA variation, but exact model I can't tell.
Awesome opportunity to add 3-Quinuclidinyl benzilate to your morning joe.. Love how it hides the cup before serving..Have so much fun waking up inside a prison cell like me back in '09... Enjoy your coffee in New America everyone :)
Another vending machine to take jobs with sheet metal made in China instead of the USA. Not blaming the servers but when people are waiting in line you don't strike up a conversation with a customer instead of filling the order and going to the next or treating to mess with their food which is a crime or asking 20 hr for poring coffee this will happen, it hurts all the good and experienced workers that don't have a mom and dad to run back home to.
actually, there's at least 1-2 workers on site to assist the customer if they have any questions and also have a conversation with as they wait for the copy. AND these machines are all manufactured in San Francisco, not in China. lol
if you've ever been to San Francisco, you'll find that there's literally 3 coffeeshops on every block. Baristas aren't going away. not to mention that they're giving jobs to Engineers, Software Developers, and Designers. Be smart here
I love the robot coffee shop idea, but a robot interviews the inventor that's a new one!
This thing is just a superautomatic espresso machine with a robotic arm?
Geez this camera setup looks and sounds like they never interviewed each other at the same time.
This made me 💀
So it does the job of a coffee shop and a vending machine?
Well done you reinvented the vending machine 👏🏽👏🏽
so coffee vending machines have been around for decades so whats the difference?
Derp Man exactly
They make terrible coffee with no variety of choice. Obviously. Next question! :)
Dk
Derp Man Yes and they only added the robotic arm.
A robot hands it to you.
So the robot just pushes the buttons for you? Noice
Soon you won't have to interact with anyone outside your bubble..
Good! People today are horseshit.
That honestly sounds horrifying. Social interaction is good for everyone and is a skill acquired over time.
Specialty Baristas will never be replaced by robots because aside from quality of the beverages the SPECIALTY barista function is to entertain/provide knowledge regarding coffee itself.
Coffee baristas are operated and have mostly shitty attitudes, I am for replacing them with robots even though I make my own coffee.
This robot arm is just something in the middle. between my fingertip and the coffe machine button. my non robotic hand can grab the mug also.
how is this different from a vending machine? why should i pay extra for a robot arm to retrieve my coffee... from a vending machine... when i can grab it myself? you do know there are vending machines that make tea and coffee.
people!
popvision again read my replies and the one I sent to you on the other video
# Minerhomiez Answer HERE, what’s with the cryptic response

Hanzhen harmonic drive gear , strain wave reducer, robot joint , over 30 years experience .

DELET THIS
It's an attention grabber

DDMM DM at a vending machine the coffee isn't fresh. Here it's fresh because its restocked once everyday
vending machines don't make the same quality lattes

I have seen older vending machines make these drinks.
I don't see it misspelling names. I guess that's the human touch that it's missing. Seriously though, I wish it could handle reusable mugs, not just disposables.
I saw one in SF

Fast food restaurants, take notes!
So it's like an expensive vending machine, not for me I like the human interaction
Was offered to be an ambassador for this brand. No way, not gonna support cafe automation...
Why add a robot arm to a vending machine??????????
When they add reusable cups I will give you a thumbs up. Nonetheless, I think this is the future. Get used to it.
Looks good.
Nice Workstation !
NICE!!! It makes 36 cups at once!!
The presenters more robotic then the machine.
It was out of control at sfo crushed the coffeee
Peace out sir ☮️
which is the robotic arm ? can anybody identify the model number
alshi hussain he said they custom built it

I prefer my coffee ice cold, always.
Yang 2020
I'm from New Zealand and hope he becomes president.
Здорово , а приобрести робота возможно?
The robot is just an unnecessary extra step.
And there is no coronavirus

can the robot wear a bikini? it might work if it can.
Ppl loosin jobs now robots taking over
Wow...
you marched for min wage......welcome to being unemployed.............
because if no one b***h about min wage, then this guy wouldn't invent this machine?
just wait until you have to work minimum wage by fear of being automated
soon it'll be time to march for UBI.
music sucks
automation is cool and all but this one is a little stupid tho, coffee machines are allready a thing, there's no need for a glorified robot for one

All 3 SF locations abruptly close! ruclips.net/video/Jm53KVmSSUI/видео.html
LOL a lot easier to just quit drinking this unnecessary, although socially condoned drug.
What a useless machine. How is it an improvement over the coffee machine ? Who funds this stupid things
This is a terrible development. All this will accomplish is to take jobs from human baristas. I will never buy coffee from a robot.
