I dont understand why you wouldnt just attach a coffee selection and payment directly to the coffee machine back there. Why do you need a million dollar arm to move the cups around? Seems way more complicated than it needs to be

Its not a million dollar arm. Robotics these days are dirt cheap. That unit is less than $10k. Like all technologies in history, the longer something is around? The cheaper they get. And two or three programmers on a contract is all it takes to program the ROM. We already Have bots just like this building other bots today btw.....
@@davefroman4700 you still didn't address the main concern. It wasn't the cost but the solving a problem that isnt there. We don't need a fake arm to move our cup. We can be dispensed a cup and we place it under the drip line.

@@seahorsefencingit's an acceptable investment that give a barista feeling , it replicates the gesture a real barista. people will go because they like watching the robotic arm and it provide something between a barista and a self service cofee machine which people wouldn't like to have.

Anddddddd it's closed. Not cost-effective and is emblematic of why we don't have robots doing this. They shut down all 3 SF locations and now only have 1 in the SFO airport. That one may end up closing, too. There have been other robot cafes - they never go far and many fail. This is simply an inefficient way of doing this, and it's more expensive. The robot malfunctions - need someone. Cleaning - need someone. The most efficient way to do this is *without an arm*, like a coffee vending machine that pours the coffee into a cup you place under the pourer after you pay. That actually is cost-effective. Robots aren't very good at handling things like this. Hard to make up for fine motor skills and dexterity of humans, plus they never notice the error.

@@Ghostrider-ul7xn doubtful. AI is a buzzword. Has been around for decades. Every time you talk to that annoying automated phone attendant? AI. Those annoying chatbots that don't help? AI. The NPCs in your video games? AI.
The effective way to automate this has already been around. It's called a coffee machine. You put in money, you put a cup there, and it does the rest. Having an arm is not efficient

You don't seem to be aware of the recent developments thats been going on with AIs like ChatGPT. As a researcher, i already integrated into my workflow and it has improved my learning rate and productivity by leaps and bounds. It can complete industry level projects in a week or two, which took me months. It rarely fails at spitting out industry grade codes which i use for simulations. ChatGPT already gained the ability to see, hear and talk just like a human being recently. One more step closer to AGI.

that looks amazingly over engineered, the arm is almost pointless. Any value in this product is in how the drinks are made.

Changing the Core is just a matter of changing the voice and the color of the EYE
Sounds like a good idea to me.
this is pretty gimmicky, the real work is being done by the machine in the back, you could have done everything without the robot arm like a regular vending machine, so really this entire demo is pointless... the robot should be scooping beans, grinding them, etc...
