- Spindle Moulder: Making bespoke kitchen Cornice Moulding
Watch how I size the timber and then machine the cornice from a piece of raw timber in multiple passes. This piece was a one off to match existing, however, normally given the time in setting up the machinery it is more economical to do a batch of mouldings.

When I stop buying tools
sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any assistance you can offer me!
@Watson Valentin instablaster :)
@Luciano Kendall I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff now.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later with my results.
@Luciano Kendall it worked and I actually got access to my account again. I'm so happy:D
Thanks so much you really help me out!
Well done
Wow! A great looking kitchen! Well done.
Thanks Oliver
I've always enjoyed using shapers. Some setups are tedious so it is nice to have a couple of dedicated machines. We have a molder and profile grinder so can make any pattern knife the customer wants. Our tilt spindle Gomad adds versatility. Our Stegherr arch molding shaper produces curved moldings. Gloves can snag!
Hey LArry, interesting to hear about the different machines. ill have a google on the arch shaper. not come across one before!!! thanks.
Awesome tools!!!
I think so too!
Profesion and perfect
Thanks Minh
Nice set up, Thank you for sharing 👍😄
Thankyou Gary, I will add what videos I can when I can!
Great video !
Thanks buddy
GREAT video - Really enjoyed watching
Cheers William
Hey nice work yeah
It would've been good to see you do the rest of the cornice and then fitting the different mouldings together! Very nice work.
Thankyou, I will perhaps do a video on the whole process at some point
easy work if you have good machines 👍
You got that right! Sharp cutters and a good setup tis what its about
All that work and then cover it with paint breaks my heart lol
Guess you missed how beautiful the final shot of the kitchen looked.
Haha! painted finish is really elegant! cannot beat a nice bit of wood grain though!!
@@BradshawJoinery
Painting nice wood is like putting Pamela Anderson in her prime into a big wooly jumper to run across the beach.
awesome cron molding !! wy painting the back side
Hi Pieter, thankyou! I usually paint all sides of Tulip to help stabilise it.
nice work though at the end result. done a lot of this myself.
Thanks Buddy
Nice work. Are they custom knives? What size is your block?
Thanks Jim, they are custom knives from Whitehill spindle tools, I had them made to my design, I'm using their 100mm aluminium profile cutter block. (It's a beast) and makes a lot of noise when running, and moves a lot of air!! 🤣
great video! whats the purpose of having the second knife in the molding heads? around the 2:06
It's called a profile limiter, it's a counterpart profile of the cutter but about 1.5mm smaller. It's a safety device so if something enters the cutter it just cuts small amounts each revolution and doesn't snatch it in... Say something Like a hand or an arm. 😁.
Love using the spindle moulder, my favourite machine in our workshop, but if you don’t mind me asking does your feed roller not rotate to make the wheels horizontal? It looks exactly the same as mine but I was just puzzled as to why you didn’t spin the wheels ?
Yes it does, I just chose not to thats all :)
Very nice spindle moulder, I got a price the other day for €6300 for the hammer version with autofeeder and a sliding carriage does this seem right
Hey Buddy, i'm not sure on new prices in the UK! I inquired about a Format 4 Spindle last year and it was around £12,000 without the power feed! Does the Hammer machine tilt to 45 degrees? as this feature is a godsend!!! I was very licky with my 700 series Spindle moulder and powerfeed, it came from somewhere that shud down and i paid just under £2000 for it. was about 7 years old!
@@BradshawJoinery yes it is pretty much the exact same as the format 4,the only difference being the sliding table is not the x roll system. I have since taken a chance on the brand me sip tilting spindle moulder 3.75hp with sliding table, Eccentric clamp, adjustable fence and also is pre bored for an auto feeder. Only €2184 delivered. I'll keep you posted
👍👍👍
Thanks
what cutter block are you using for the profile?
Its the 100 x 125mm aluminium block ffrom Whitehill
Looking around your shop I can't believe you bought a Felder J/P without the electric lift kit for the planer table.
Hey, I would have bought the lift kit, but they don't sell the 500 series with electric lift! You have to go to a 700 series and a 400mm wide blade! 😖 I didn't want a wider blade or bigger machine so settled for the manual lift. I have contemplated adding a motor though!
@@BradshawJoinery I see. I did not know that. I have a Felder AD741 with lift kit it has been great. Mine is 20 years old know.
Very interesting. I’m guessing that the first knives were made just for this job? If so, that’s one very expensive 8’ length of moulding
thankyou, They weren't, they are actually for two types of architrave i had made into the same cutter to save money a while back...! Turned out to make a fairly nice cornice haha!
Very nice, the Whitehill kit is great eh? Is that a Wadkin CD? I have a CC model I am bringing back to life this fall.
It's a CC, it's a fantastic saw, it will literally cut 4" solid oak like it's butter, and do it safely... Even if the wood pinches the blade it just take sit in its stride and doesn't kick at you. I love it. Always quare too with the metal table we made. Never had to adjust it. Good to hear your bringing one back to life!
Good to hear! It's going to be a little intimidating the first time I turn it on. I'm a timberframer (post and beam?) So am using it to help with brace production primarily. I had Whitehill make a custom block for it that I plan on making a video about. 300mm diameter, 50mm wide, double shear...
Haha that sounds brilliant for housing out. I want to buy a tennon cutter for mine with a 30degree cutter so I can house out saw tooth profile for adjustable shelving in kitchen cabinets. I'm just not sure it will work as yet.
@@BradshawJoinery Get in touch with David at Whitehill and he can tell you pretty quickly if It's possible or not. Great to work with, no obligation consult.
@@DovetailTimberworks I should have said before there is a group on Facebook called Wadkin Appreciation group. It's a quiet group but some nice bits and pieces come up on there that people have bought and or restored.
I liked your millIng cutters. how could you tell me where you bought it?
Here in Brazil, i didn't see this model yet
I get most of my cutters from Whitehill tools. 👍
Hey, how much cost the safety things...its in videos from start 6.20...
I have no idea. it came with he machine, its from Felder Uk
They're in the Felder e-shop. You have to purchase the wheel arm separately from the table mount. It's around $430 for the two.
Now do 49 more one piece at a time like this 😜😂😂
Lol, It actually makes it more beneficial doing more because then the setup time per piece is reduced right down!
what's the namee of the tool?and how much does it cost?
Not my favorite color but NICE work.
Thanks Matey
What is the purpose for the last cut you made in the moulding? Other than less weight, I don't understand what is gained from it. If it is to reduce weight, why not remove more?
The little notch on the back of the moulding will align with the top of the cabinets so when the top of the cabinets are boarded with 18mm plywood it locates in that notch and hold the cornice securely. It's also another way of attaching the cornice irlf you don't want to pin through the face you. Can add a board in that rebate and screw down from top
@@BradshawJoinery Ahh....thank you!

I think they are aroubnd £5000 Brand New.

:)
Gloves have no place in a wood shop kids.
I disagree, just cheep your hands out the machines.
@@BradshawJoinery Okay, dumbass. Learn the hard way.
Thankyou 💚

You people on RUclips that wear gloves while working with power equipment kill me. What do you think people that don't know better are going to do. Totally irresponsible.
I'm not a Anti glove preacher. I have found if you work the correct side of the cutters you are safer having gloves on with day in, day out use of machinery and raw materials.. Its when you put yourself in a position of risk it becomes an issue. Its quite easy to pick up on something like this, I'm sure every video on youtube there is something someone will do slightly wrong and could be picked up on especially if its not the intended focus of the content.. Ill Try and do a safe handling of the spindle moulder video maybe.
Dude wheres your pressure plate on the front, for safety there should be pressure on top and front of piece especially that thin and high, you should never put your hands that close to the block either, wow wonder how long you keep your fingers? think safety and stop teaching people how to use a spindle the wrong way. T his now reminds me I should do a video to keep people safe on spindles.
HI Ian, This Video was made more specifically to showcase the moulding production capability and not to serve as a safe use of Spindle. It is difficult to capture the cuts on video with a powerfeed that i use normally. I will do a walkaround of all my machinery eventually and safe working practices!
I don’t watch these videos to judge safety. That is learned by the manual. Thanks for sharing
