US Army war veteran Hazel Motes, a man estranged from his faith, is drawn back into the world of religion in an unexpected way. Despite his initial resistance, the sight of a dilapidated country church and encounters with street hustlers claiming to be preachers spark something within him. When a cab driver insists that Hazel looks like a preacher in his new hat, he reluctantly embraces the role, founding the Church of Truth, a new religious movement devoid of traditional Christian symbols. His first follower is a naive 18-year-old with a supposed prophetic gift, setting the stage for an unconventional spiritual journey.
