  • Greetings from the Vital Information 40th Anniversary tour. We played Oakland tonight at the legendary Yoshi's, and I had just enough gas left in the tank to tape an episode of the podcast.

Nooo! Janek's giving into the algorithm with the thumbnail. Will still watch, like, and share.

Not giving in at all. I'm making sure the video actually gets watched. Rather than doing all the work, choosing to use RUclips as a platform to share it, and then refusing to admit how it actually works... it's not ideal, but it does work at the end of the day. A wider audience is the goal, and these are simply the methods required to get there.

@@janekgwizdalapodcast8028 Don't hate the player, hate the game - I understand. At least with your videos the content and quality is there to back it up.
I've been aggressively downvoting so many videos lately that do everything the algorithm wants them to do, but are just utterly lacking everywhere else and it's made the YT recommendations a bit better for me over time.
Thanks for being the exemplar in so many ways as to why it's worth it to put in the work and practice.

For me, knowing the theory helps me have the confidence to be creative.
Being creative is such a vulnerable space. It's hard to put yourself and your ideas out there.
Knowing the theory behind what I'm doing, so I can hold my ground if someone challenges my ideas, helps me to take risks.
Being creative shouldn't be competitive, but in practice, it often is.

If someone is challenging your ideas in a way that makes you feel uncomfortable, then there's a possibility you need to find a new situation/band/environment to be creative in. The people around you should definitely challenge you, but in a way that is inspiring and nurturing. Not in a way that makes you feel like you have to understand theory to be able to play music. You don't. I mean that literally. You've perhaps told yourself that you do, but you actually don't. This isn't just my opinion, this is objective fact. So I would encourage you to try and break away from the security blanket that is music theory. You'll find that you have to think way less when you play, and that your performances will become far more honest and natural sounding.

    Hi Janek,
I appreciate the answer you gave to the viewers question. I'm trying to work through the exercises in ii-V-I and All the Good Stuff and I think they are great, but often times, due to my personality, I start getting really hung up on the 'spelling' part or understanding the theory. I often wonder which should come first the shape/phrase or figuring out what it all means. So when you said play and listen it removed this issue.
What you said about listening, and identifying the voice of a chord also struck a chord with me. More and more I am learning how important ear training is and I'm incorportating that into my daily practice. It took me several exercises from your books for it to dawn on me (even though you wrote it out plainly) the gist of them is to hear the V-I to hear Diminished to Major. To hear the dominant flat 9 to I, etc... I find it extremely difficult. Perhaps a video for tips on eartraining?
    Keep up the great work!

Oakland! Sly Stone, Tower Of Power & o.g. thrash metal territory! Two of my best friends went to Berklee. Like most folks, they did it for 1.5 years. They got the nuts & bolts (ear training) of it and bounced. Now, both of those friends refuse to give me charts. They essentially say "I know that you can hear it, just play some ill shit!"

Could not agree more re: networking at Berklee, NYC, USC . Maybe teachers like you and 5-10% may go on to have clout in industry max.
If an international student, who can afford it? 2000 is was 400k to get a BMus. Buy records and transcribe, play play and play and remain playful.
Hal is heavy! So was Banacos, Garzone and John P can teach some things ( Jack your strings ) . Typesd this and you just said names literally @38:00 mins about.
    School is OUT.
Good advise this Vlog - non content creator.
