I had the same problem with the stock 5rd Savage magazine that came with my rifle. I went and got a Savage 10rd mag thinking that would fix the problem, but had the exact same problem. So I got factory Savage stainless steel mags and they work perfect every time. I got 2-5rd and 2-10rd stainless Savage magazines and never had a problem again. They load perfectly every time. They seem to be built better then the stock steel mags and are a much tighter fit then the stock mags. If I have one complaint they are a little finicky to load in the rifle. But I will take that over having problems cycling rounds.

I love my savage. But I have 3 different savage mags made 10 years apart. They all do the same thing. You go to chamber a round then the bullets tip up at a weird angle, then all 5 shoot out of the mag all over the place. It's a pain bc the rifle itself is very accurate

I am very happy I tried this brand. 100 rds zero malfunctions. The savage mags would have malfunctioned like 30 or 40 times @@blackswampoutdoors4850

Interesting video my lefty savage Mkii G has never once had any sort of malfunction regarding the factory 10rd mag it came with. Always felt pretty solid construction wise for the apparent cheap manufacturing of the mags (not that they need be expensive, its a .22lr after all). I recently purchased a savage 10rd silver/stainless magazine and it has also performed spectacularly. My rifle has other issues though, as the barrel is not centered with the stock and it angles off to the right which doesnt really impact how it shoots since the sights are not mounted on the stock but its more of a craftsmanship irk. Maybe a simple fix to correct that but i havent bothered with it yet. I get they are cheap rifles but the nice finish on the stock is ruined by the safety and bolt notches that look like they were done with a dremel and are splintering because they cut them AFTER the stock had its finish coat. Also the barrel and receiver finish is alright on mine but i dislike the matte finishes they feel cheap and scratch crazy easy. Want to try and maybe refinish my barrel and receiver and throw them in an aftermarket stock to just overhaul the whole rifle lol. Unfortunately, next to no one makes lefty stocks for these rifles that are a style i want. Despite all that still love the rifle and its crazy accurate as well.

Thanks for the comment! i dont have much experience with the mkII in wood. But, my Savage 93r17 has a wood stock on it from the factory. Beautiful grain, decent stain, perfectly free floated barrel, it is a bit of a satin/matte finish coat. It is actually produced by Boyds for savage and is an example of that classic Boyds quality. That rifle is probably 6-7 yrs old i do not know who makes them now for savage but that is unfortunate about its fit and finish. I know Boyds makes some left handed models. it may be worth a look on their site to see what is available if you are ever interested in replacing it. Thanks again for watching!

Great video! Not that it matters but the mkm is 3d printed and technically a nylon mag. Usually the issue is the nylon printed parts usually have feed lips that cant stay in shape in the long run and they cant take heat and have a very short duty cycle.
Im going to try the savage stainless mags i think.
I have been lucky so far with my 5 rounder for about 500 rounds, but 500 rounds is nothing.
    Anyways, great job!

I find this video odd. I have 15 Lakefield/ Cooey/ Savage mkII magazines varying in age from 3 years old to 50 uears old and I've never had a issue like you described. As a matter of fact all my magazines control the roinds so precisely you can load shorts in them and they slide up into the extractors perfectly and go straight into the chamber on all my MKII rifles (i have 4 currently).
Id try another Savage mag maybe you just got 2 bad ones

I have had new mags sent to me by savage. They work for a little until they dont. The magazines are plain and simply poorly designed. Its a shame as the rifles are very accurate and have alot of potential, unfortunately for some, a magazine downfall.

  • @deansmith4141
    @deansmith4141 10 месяцев назад +2

The issue that I've been having is that when the mag is fully loaded and I bump it the wrong way, ALL of the rounds come flying out of the mag like nothing is holding them in. Both my 5 rnd and my 10 rnd do this. I have attempted to fix this by very slightly bending the feed lips in and it hasn't helped at all. I've looked for a good aftermarket mag for my MK 2, but can't seem to find any that are worth the money they want for them. I had actually heard about the MKM and C Spec mags before seeing this video and have heard the same problems with them that you just covered. I'm seriously thinking and converting my 5 rnd mag into a single shot feeder and just making it a single shot, but that takes a lot of the fun out of it, especially if you're like me and chase squirrels around all day. Honestly I'm at a loss with what to do about it. If you come up with anything please let me know. Maybe I've just missed something...

Think Savage had a bad batch of mags. I’ve heard this, but haven’t had a problem with mine. I actually like the factory mags because their construction is very similar to my 70 YO Winchester 69A mags which have always worked great! On the Winchester, you can see were they were staked with a screw driver like blade which you don’t see on the Savage mags, so I went ahead and staked mine with a small hammer and old screw driver. 6 months later, and still no problems, and the Savage MkII is a one hole shooter at 25 yds.

    • @blackswampoutdoors4850

Nice! I also have found staking or gluing the savage mags did help. I have had mkii mags seperate to the point of the follower and any remaining rounds in the magazine find a new home in the grass while exiting the top of the magazine at a high rate of speed..

Searching for this vid meant previous problems, and my mag is one. I have to be VERY careful in loading the magazine, if not the top round will stick straight up, like an awkward boner. Sometimes just after putting all 5 round in, the magazine has a happy moment and ejects three rounds out of the mag onto the floor. No input needed.
I'd say almost 66% of the time, this mag will have some stupid issue.
And after watching this video, I can feel some play, almost a slight click when pressing the sides in. The rifles's 10 years old, maybe 1000 rounds fired through it. It shoots great, but that magazine!

I don’t wanna risk my CCW license, so I have to figure in cost of going to the shooting range as well as cost of ammo where I can plink.

Savage's mags are notoriously bad in this particular gun. Do you tell AR people to just use milspec aluminum mags? I sure hope not. They're trash.
I have 5 20 round csspec mags and they all work great. Best part is they're even stainless steel and nitrided so they'll basically never rust.

@@sukhoiboy4140 I have the OEM mag that came with the gun and I haven't had any problems with it, but it is well-documented that the OEM mags are poorly made and will eventually fall apart.
What is dumb about 20 round mags? These are cheap plinking rifles. I have a bipod on mine so 20 round mags work just fine.
You haven't given any reason to stick with OEM besides "go home get real bud". Why spend about the same price for an inherently objectively inferior product?

@@xb0xisbetter i said whats dumb about 20 round mags, they hang too low. its in the way and annoying and I've never not gotten my target by shot 19.
where is any of that well documented then? in buddies video where he has a shitty non oem mag? ' will eventually fall apart' dude they are stamped steel mags that can be unpacked and rebuilt easily with a knife.
the reason given for oem mags was that they work without any problems.
and its not objectively inferior, subjectively maybe but not objectively.
does that clear it up for you there bud or will i need to reply once more?

@@sukhoiboy4140 Why would your stupidity clear anything up? Everything but the density of your skull is as clear as mud.
I already explained why how much the 20 round mags hang down is irrelevant. They don't even touch the shooting bench with the rifle resting on it with a bipod set to a comfortable shooting height. What does shooting at one target have to do with 20 round mags? They're plinking mags, not hunting mags. There's a range here with dozens of awesome steel targets at various ranges. I often think 5 20 round mags is too few to sustain the fun.
Whether or not they're "stamped steel mags that can be unpacked and rebuilt with a knife" is totally irrelevant to the question of their quality and reliability.
Your OEM mags currently still work without any problems. Congratulations. That's obviously not a reason to proclaim "oem mags or go home get real bud".
The problems with the OEM mags are documented all over the internet going back to at least 2009 just with a quick Google search for "Savage mk ii magazine problems". Since I'm not an idiot, I already had csspec mags in my possession before I ever even hit the range. Peruse any one of the various threads about it on rimfirecentral.
The OEM mags aren't held together by anything, the csspec mags are welded. They're also stainless and nitrided. Even if they were not stainless, nitriding is far more resistant to corrosion than bluing. Literally 0 argument can be made for them to not be superior magazines in both construction and corrosion resistance.
