- “High in the Mountains of Western North Carolina the ancient Celtic spirit beckons. Answering the call, as hundreds of tartan banners unfurl, are the sounds of bagpipes echoing through the valley, and once again, thousands of kilt-clad Scots make their way to MacRae Meadows for their annual gathering and games. Nowhere in the New World is there a place more reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands than the home of America’s grandest Highland Games-Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina.” (gmhg.org/)
Learn about the influence the Scots-Irish heritage has on Appalachia in this episode as we explore the Highland Games at Grandfather Mountain in NC…the largest games in the Northern Hemisphere. Watch Granny’s great-great nephew compete in Highland wrestling and see our official taste tester in one of his precious competitions.

That was awesome. My ancestors came over Scotland. My grandfather was sent over to Canada by his parents for a better life. Unfortunately, the Catholic Church got involved and sent him to work on a farm to for room and board. The abuses he suffered were unthinkable! He spoke of his experiences once and he never spoke of it again!❤️🇨🇦🙏
@@garybrunet6346 oh wow
So sorry
It’s neat to learn more about where we all
Come from but hate to hear he had such terrible experiences
We are going this year. I'm in Hiddenite NC.
Great fun
@@shannonherb2048 it was fun!
This was a wonderful video! Having been to both the Appalachians and the Scottish Highlands I agree, they are very similar. In my opinion two of the most beautiful regions on our planet. I can certainly see why so many Scots-Irish immigrants settled in appalachia.
@@carolynpurser7469 we’ve never been to Scotland but agree this is one of the most beautiful places
My husband is a state trooper and directed traffic there this year.
