This channel provides cookin', cannin', craftin', talkin' and teachin' tricks from the Granny Women of Appalachia in a way only they can share.
Life in the hills and hollows of the Appalachian Mountains was never easy. In the 1800-1900's, often secluded from "modern" medicine and commodities, families learned to live off the land and pass medicinal practices from generation to generation. Women who managed to survive the rugged mountain life and childbirth were commonly referred to as "Granny Women". The community often sought the wisdom of these respected Granny Women for life's daily struggles.
Join us as we share Appalachian stories, recipes, crafts, and more from Granny and her kin.
Born in 1942, Granny was one of seven siblings, 5 girls and 2 boys. The daughter of a school teacher and a factory worker, Granny grew up cooking and sewing and learning the Appalachian way of life. She passed on her traditions to her children and grandchildren...and now on to you.

Thank you for sharing your story! I am currently battling HER2+ breast cancer. I was diagnosed last August. I originally was staged at 2B after my biopsy, but a CT scan showed an abnormality in my lymph nodes. I went back and had a biopsy of my lymph nodes and they changed my stage to 3C. I did six rounds of chemo and then had a mastectomy at the end of March. Because they found cancer when they did my surgery, I had to restart my year of chemo. I should finish my treatments in June or July of next year. I have good days and I have bad days. I definitely have the chemo fog, I had problems with my memory before I had cancer, now it’s awful. I have severe neuropathy in my legs and feet. Luckily my hair has started growing back, and it’s curly. I’ve always had straight hair. No matter what I go through, I know I’m lucky to be alive and that I’m going to beat this. God is good!

Thank you for sharing your story Memaw Dixie... My mama is a breast cancer survivor they found hers in the early 90s. Hers was about in the same spot you said yours was in kind of up high and back on the chest cavity wall. Hearing your story reminds me so much of her story, she had two grandkids, and she said they help push her on her bad days to be able to do stuff. She went through chemo lost her hair, she said when she was going through chemo everything tastes like metal so she drank lots of pickle juice and water to help get the taste out of her mouth. Since then she's had several skin cancers removed. The chemo has caused her to be diabetic and have a lots of heart trouble. But she said God's not through with her yet and she's a fighter just like you are. Also I'm a Memaw I live in Elberton Georgia. I still have the face mask y'all gave away back in 2020 I was the winning name y'all drew and I'll always treasure it...I love watching the Granny women videos. I have learned a lot from y'all especially Canning. I had always water bath everything till this year and I started pressure canning and I love it. Thank you again for sharing your story.

You just described the past few years of my life. I was diagnosed 03/11/21 and 03/12/21. My husband was in the ER with acute pancreatitis on 03/13/21. Long story short, we were in two different hospitals a couple of weeks later. He was in ICU for 6 days and then moved to another room for 6 more days. Meanwhile, I had my surgery. He came home on Good Friday. He was practically an invalid for several months. I took care of everything during that time. I was scared and alone. I did have a few family members who got us back and forth to all of our appointments. Thank God. I spent countless hours on the phone asking questions, fixing/confirming appointments, speaking to insurance people, etc. etc. I could go on and on, but I won't. I went through a year of chemo/treatments and 35 radiation treatments while taking care of my husband. All I could think about was him and how sick he was. I have the brain fog and the extreme tiredness you mentioned. But I thank the good Lord for bringing us through that. It's rare that I talk about this, but I do want to encourage other women to go ahead and schedule those mammograms. The smaller the cancer is, the better things will go. I watched other women come and go while I continued treatment because they acted quickly. Much love to all of you. Signed: Mrs. Grumpy Old Man
