  • Its been a very different Summer at J Bay with some huge changes on our beaches never seen before.. Our sand has gone missing after a heavy winter of big seas and followed by a summer of consistent onshore winds. Scary to see how much sand is missing and the question now is will it ever return.
We have seen the demise of Bruces Beauties over the years..is it the end of Supertubes...

Strangest summer in cape town as well. No swell for weeks. Banks all gouged away. El Nino changing the landscape. Warm waters here ad well. Dbl digits most unusual

Sometimes it takes a long time to fill in after a giant swell. I’ve seen breaks here changed because the reef bottom was altered as big rocks were moved around. When conditions are right again, the sand will come in faster than you can believe.

We had 2 weeks in Durban in the middle of January cook every day this year with no swell predicted on the charts, the wind reports were inaccurate and the swell seemed to stick around. Seems everywhere is a bit different this year.

Where I live in Massachusetts they tried replenishing a beach by trucking in sand. They spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on this project to fortify the beach. That was about five years ago, and today everything is washed away and it’s worse than ever. The thought that man can alter an ocean Beach is arrogance of the highest order. And where is that sound now? That’s right, it has all washed into the ocean and has made unnatural changes in the ocean flow.

Absolutely.. Development at St Francis Bay south of JBay and covering the dune fields has lead to this..

... Interesting you haven't seen it like that in 60 years mate ... Oddly enough I'm concerned about a lack of sand in my favorite bay for the third year in a row now .. not even a close out bank .. no sand bank at all . 😢

Beaches always re-establish their natural state across time. You have to be patient with Mother Nature. I know having lived in KZN South Coast for decades.

@@oceanadventures365that older video you produced with the aerial photos of the sand rivers was fascinating. I initially thought the same as Colleen but then you raise a good point about how the Sand on these beaches comes from the land (in a round about way) not directly from out to see off the ledge from ancient rivers

development of the area has definitely contributed to the lack of natural beach erosion that historically contributed to sand bars etc .
