My friends and I (a couple of 12 year olds with shovels and mtbs) went into the woods in our backyards and made a huge trail to connect everyone’s backyard. We had so much fun but yet a few trips to the doctor. It surprisingly only took about 4 months.
Just get involved with the trail builders in your community and you will get nice sneak peaks of whats up and coming I do this and i get a fresh idea of whats happening in my area for mtb
dude i watched you hit the ground and all I could do was say out load "OH NO NOT AGAIN!" Seth is soo your kryptonite!!!! When riding with him you need to like wrap yourself in bubble wrap or something lol!!! love your channel too. You and Brian keep up the good work!!!
Anyone here in 2019 to see how far berm creek has come? Sad to hear that the house is being sold but I know Seth won’t fail to impress us with berm creek 2.0 haha
This is the video I watched that started my passion for mountain biking thank you Seth for sending me into a hobby I never knew I would enjoy so much it started with a backyard trail of my own and only went from there
Thanks for riding with me today, Seth. I just came horm from a party, broke my phone, and got in trouble with a friend of mine. These vids are extremely soothing and exactly what I need rn. Much love from Germany, hope to ride one day w/ you :)
I've got a backyard trail with drops, jumps, rock rolls, wooden features, berms, rock gardens, skinnies, roots etc. One tip is after riding in mud is rake the the trail with a leaf rake, it gives it a nice look and good surface.
How about you add one of those features that are like a wall ride! They are usually made of wooden planks with cross beams behind it for strength. You see them a lot in downhill races! If you added one on the berm it would be a great feature and make it have a little more variety!
That was what was intended! You could use the little dirt berm or go up a little farther and use the wall! I though about the room in his backyard, so I thought it would be a great idea for it take place of the berm. Or, a little hybrid of both like 1 quarter dirt berm and 3 quarters wooden wall ride!
I mean a tabletop couldn't hurt right... You're the MAN Seth!! LOVE everything you do and are doing to get people (myself) into biking man... Fuck Yeah!
I've built a trail in my back yard and here is the advice I have after starting it a year ago. Make it a loop trial so that you can do laps as long as you want. Make multiple paths for the trials and turn around loops so you can do the trail in reverse so there are sort of high intensity and low intensity sections. The idea is to make the trial interesting and continuous. I've gotten tired of the 20 minute drive to the trials closest to my house so it's nice to be able to go in my back yard and get a good hour or two ride in. For your trial I wound connect the heads of your trials and add a turn around at the top so you can go back down the steep drop and technical curves and then climb up the less steep hill next to the rock drops. That direction would probably be less energy consuming which will help make the trial fun in long rides. You would go the way you currently have the trial set up and when you start getting drained you would start doing it the opposite direction. This also helps work in the trial in a wider area because you will take different lines each direction. Another thing I do to make new trials is to draw up a rough line that you want for the trial and just brake up and turn over the dirt. Don't pack it in or anything just leave the dirt as soft and loose as you can and start riding that. I know it sucks and will be slow dirty riding but the dirt will get packed in to the angle and path that you ride rather than trying to create and pack banks that end up being the wrong steepness or having a packed line that is against the flow of the trial. I'm sure you've already seen that in your trial that there are sections that you end up riding just alittle to the side of where you originally built the trial. Also don't try to fight nature on your trial. If there is a section that has irrigation issues try to make the trial work with it because they will just continually be problems and destroy the trial. On my trial I have a few places that are either humps or little jumps over channels that I've made for water to flow. I don't know if these tips carry over to full sized trials but they have helped me maintain and enjoy by backyard trial.
If you emailed me your trial map I could draw on little trial connectors and add on's I think would be a lot of fun for your trial and send it back to you.
Yep, fun stuff Seth. I have a very difficult set of trails on our property in the surrounding woods - the terrain tends to be steep but I managed to get a few long sections of single track included with permission from my neighbors. It's great for practicing jumps and techniques.
I have a cool trail system in the yard I grew up in, about a miles worth. It started out just me riding in the woods on one of my dad's old lawn mowers that we took the mower deck off of. In middle school I got a little side by side go cart and expanded it a bit. At the end of middle school I saved up enought for a dirt bike and I connected my trails with a neighbors who was about the same age. As we got older we built jumps and creek crossings and it became a place where we rode mountain bikes, dirt bikes, jeeps, etc... I loved maintaining it, you know clearing sticks after every storm, clearing leaves after the fall. Now when I go home to visit my parents I still love to spend a day clearing it out and walking it (because all my toys are at my house now). This vid brings back some fun memories.
I have my own trails in my yard it has been slammed full of single track, dirt jumps, wooden ramps, skinny bridges, and I have a rock garden. but you did say you have a creek in the back of your yard. so my advice is cut out a shelf (like alipha) down to it then back up for some water feature. I know you re limited bc your yard is pretty steep but try to make some flow if you can. its to bad you moved I've been trying to find you at all the parks is here in florida but you got some nice riding up there! (like so Seth see's)
Zackary Ratcliff Thank you so much! This just gave me a few ideas for the flat trail in the forest part in my backyard. The wood bridge things and ramps would really make it nice. I have like one downhill part but I feel like that’s not enough. Thanks again!
The big difference here is Seth's mountain biking makes him money where as almost all of ours costs us money. We've already seen he can stretch a dollar with all of those hacks. He might even make more money than her, she can't be too mad! haha
Seth doesn't really "make money mountain biking," he makes money by coming up with good ideas, filming, editing, narrating, and producing content that people find entertaining. If it was easy, everyone would do it.
I think you should like his videos if you enjoy them. Don't just assume you're going to, I would watch the whole video before rating. I think a like or dislike has meaning only if you do it for a reason.
I remember in one of your portable kicker videos, you said if you were to build something bigger it'd be somewhere where you can keep it permanently. You can keep it now that you've got space in your back yard! I think you should build a jump line :)
I'm actually making my own pump/skill/trick/regular riding tracks in my backyard just from what I have seen in this video. I will probably post a video of it soon.
Sam Hens :D I worked on it a ton but kinda dropped off on it I made a 200ft track so far and about 4 ft wide with one starting platform and a jump made of wood and metal
I know I’m a year late but my father and I built a small track in our back yard that grew from bmx to mini bikes then to r/c cars after 20 years. Used a lot of soda, beer and wine to harden the faces of jumps roll in and the small straight we had. Don’t know what kind of dirt is down there but it worked wonders here in jersey!
This vid inspired us to make a trail at home. We made it on the side of a small hill similar to your place. Version 1 was a bit too much work to ride with too many turns all the way back up the hill. Version 2 we tried to make it a bit more flowy and it is now more fun to ride. Next step will be to build up the berms a bit more and maybe add a small jump. Thanks for the inspiration. Building a trail has been a fun father and son project.
I have built a freestyle area with jumps and such and a trail around that. it is pretty big because it is in a massive dirt lot right around the corner from my house. the thing is, I live in AZ so it is a lot tougher to build and maintain jumps. I have been seeing some things pop up that i haven't built, and the trails r getting used a lot. which is great to see people r using my creation and adding onto it! at my dads house there is a crazy area in a wash where local kids(including me) have spent years building and actual freestyle park with huge jumps. we have also made countless trails that go for miles. it is not uncommon to see kids with shovels out there working on them! u should come to AZ btw, our trails are a whole new animal than what u r used to
damn i wish people would do that in my area, but the city is one of the fastest (was the fastest a few years ago) growing city in the state and they are building tons of stuff on the unused land, and the land that is unused is somtimes patrolled by police giving out tickets.
Ethan Marsingill ya they destroyed one of the jump areas and now they r building a retirement home there lol dumb old people (kidding). I live in PHX/Peoria.
I really like your videos Seth I wanna do this stuff but I had a heart transplant in 2015 and in The summer of 2016 I had a set back when a virus attacked my legs and I couldn't walk and I had to learn how to walk again. I'm back to walking and even running still haven't done to much on the bike tho but I'm trying. I wish I had the money to buy a mountain bike also there are some cool spots here in Michigan. Keep making the great videos they give me a lot of inspiration.
I dig it. Spent all weekend making a downhill single track in my backyard. Just have a semi north shore drop off and table top to complete. Great work Seth
Love this! We're attempting to create a track at our cabin in the woods. Not much downhill but might be enough to create a few rollers. Trail building is so much work. Big props to those of you trail builders who give us the opportunity to ride.
What started it all, actually started watching Seth from this video, now he is one of my favourite youtuber and is the only youtuber where I take the time out of my day to wait for his new videos to come out so I can watch them straight away
lol i thought i was the only one who built these kinds of trails in the backyard. I am now building a pump track and think one would work perfect in your yard.
Very cool. I made a beginner trail on our property for my wife. One lap is a half mile with a 52 foot elevation change, but I have recently added a short loop. I also have plans to add a more challenging section through the woods. Enjoy your trail!
Just recently I've been into cycling. Don't own a mtb, but my sister's basic road cycle. At first I and my neighbour cleared the small yard of overgrowing weeds. It has small bumps, I've been practicing there. Then I got the idea to build more. The whole yard is somewhat of an L- shape, so after two weeks, I plan to make a tiny/small trail using the rest of the land as this unused part has a bit of elevation of 2.5 feet.
We built a BMX track in our back yard with some awesome jumps. Started with a bulldozer to rough it in and the rest was done with shovels and kid power!
When me and my friends were 9-10, we built a "trail" in a piece of community land around a drainage ditch. We built it out of red clay (we live in GA), and built a few jumps and obstacles. We maintained it for an entire season in the winter, before it washed away. There is still a little nub of dirt sticking up at the biggest jump.
Just started working on our project last week been cleaning out brush . Thanks for the inspiration on this, because where we live you have to travel across the state to get to a bike park. We have 10 acres that we can build on. Thanks again, love your videos.
Crazy to see how far you've come. I remember watching these videos at least 4 years ago in Colorado. Went out and bought myself a mountain bike. Now we have recently temporarily relocated to Charlotte, NC and we are going to Ashville this weekend to see the town. We are staying in Canton and I saw the name "Berm Park" of things to see near by. I recognized the name and looked into it a little more. So awesome what you've done! Keep it up "Seth's Bike Hacks"!
I'm not super into mountain biking but I like watching it and like to go riding sometimes but honestly most of all I just respect you for making the most of what you got and bringing the trail to your backyard honestly it's inspiring
Pretty cool trails! Think I will fly down all the way from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada to ride it! Better yet I invite you Seth, to come up here and ride our trails. Apparently, we have the one of the largest green belts on any cities in North America. Along with that perhaps some of the longest single track trail systems too. That I can't be sure on. Come see for yourself!
Great fun!! I am lucky to have woods surrounding my back yard and I do have a small but fun practice loop. A small jump some logs to practice hopping. I find myself riding the home run when I have 15 minutes to kill and practicing my skills with no pressure to get anywhere else. Also have 6.5 acres in the ADK at our cabin, a pine forest with soft loam, BIG rocks and a stream. I’ve been working on a fun track up there. To be able to use your bike in your own yard is a joy it reminds me all the time that, I am a MTBer!!!
Seth I have 6 acres and I've been building trails on it for a year now. I was beginning to think that it wasn't worth it since I have 4 miles of singletrack just 5 miles from my house but after seeing your video I realize I'm thinking about it wrong. That sign you built changed my mind... I'll name my trail and have a map up this spring! Thanks!
Pump tracks are cool but overrated. Take too much space (you need to destroy a lot to build it) which is a shame in natural places like where Seth lives now.
We have made our own trail system including big drops, gap jumps, big berms , whale tail and a pump section, also can't wait to see the progression of berm creek
I’m 11 years old and I just moved to Colorado and I live in a camper at a camp site and around the campsite I have made little jumps and drops and trail around the campsite it’s pretty fun but I’m planning to make more in the woods next to it but I got all my inspiration from you and berm creek
I'm volunteering with the local park service to build out the Oak Openings MTB trail in NW Ohio. The open section is about five miles. In total it'll be up around 18 miles when the other four areas are completed. I'll be vlogging as the new areas open up. I'm also going to build a trail on my parents' 10-acre property. It's mostly flat, but I'm planning to build a LOT of ramps, bridges, and other obstacles after seeing what the rangers have been building.
Trail building can be such a source of accomplishment and pride. Also, such a huge frustration when people trash what you, and your friends (because it's never really done alone), have spend dozens and/or hundreds of hours building. Great job, love the little touches like the trailhead map and trail marker. :)
Hey Seth bike hacks I'm just asking for a favor. My best friend he died biking he flipped his bike during a turnament and landed on his skull and had a brain aneurism and a month later he fell off a tube and died. And the reason I am telling you this is because he loved biking and I've been wanting to go back to Prince George to put a monument on pidherny trail but I haven't gotten to it yet and I don't think I'll be able to so I'm just wondering would you be able to put a monument on your trail for me. By the way his name is tyrese and I'm Hayden
+XxNightHunterxX hey Hayden, I'm really sorry about your friend. You don't need to put a monument in Prince George-you could put one anywhere! Better yet, dedicate one of your rides to him every month. I think your friend would be stoked that you're riding in his memory.
I build and maintain trails in the bush up from my place. It’s fun but hard work! If I could give you some advice it would be to make sure you have a good drainage system and ways to stop creeks and rivers from flowing over your track, trust me it sucks when you loose your track to some water!
I live on an island in the PNW so it's pretty standard to have mountain bike trails wherever but we're lucky enough to have an entire bike park with six trails and we hope to have more.
Steel is heavier but has a more compliant ride. Diamondback might provide better bang for buck but if you buy an Orange you are getting bikes made in Halifax, UK which is pretty dang cool IMO
I have watched this vid so many times I love this trial so much and it would be my dream to ride it but I'm only 12 he is selling his house next year and I don't have a great bike but I love to try and make small replicas in the forest next to me but it never really works out love your vids keep it up and I hope u build a new trial at your new house 👍
Any plumbing shop will have 3 or 4" pipe that has a 3000 lb crush weight. Should cost $8. We use these to let water flow under the trails. Great for seasonal wet spots. Or underground stuff that just makes a spot wet. Berm Creek has a couple spots that could use them. Quick, cheap and does a great job.
Hey seth could you make a video on how to get comfortable getting a bigger bike , I recently was gifted a new bike which is quite a big size for me and I am unsure how to adapt to the changes , thank you .
It's difficult to judge what is too much here. Generally, when the saddle is positioned correctly, you should not be able to touch the ground with your foot unless you lean the bike and you should definitely not be able to touch the ground with both feet. However, if you're having difficulties getting down from the bike even over the toptube, you've got a frame that's too large for you.
My friends and I (a couple of 12 year olds with shovels and mtbs) went into the woods in our backyards and made a huge trail to connect everyone’s backyard. We had so much fun but yet a few trips to the doctor. It surprisingly only took about 4 months.
Same I also did that at 12 and I’m 16 now and the trails are pretty fun
How are they holding up
Its crazy to go back and watch episodes like this and your garage build and compare it to how far you've come now!
I've said it before and I will say it again: Simply the best MTB videos on RUclips.
The Finnish Crash - MTB Everything Agreed
The Finnish Crash - MTB Everything I want to get a new mountain bike and he has told me everything i need to know
TUOMAS!
Back again to revisit those crazy days...
When you realise that his tiny backyard has a better trail system than your entire local forest.

I'm back to walking and even running still haven't done to much on the bike tho but I'm trying. I wish I had the money to buy a mountain bike also there are some cool spots here in Michigan. Keep making the great videos they give me a lot of inspiration.
great to hear that you are trying get better soon
Trevor Sullivan i hope that you can start riding soon!
good luck.
Trevor Sullivan good luck, but mtb's are not that expensive actually, i got my first one(new) for $150! the bike isnt as important as the rider ;)
kuba grzegorz
I got my first one used from a friend of a friend für 20$
Amazing. I had no idea once could do something like this in his back yard.
Kudos for such a great implementation, Seth. Great use of the land, features, and it looks like lots of fun. Keep up the awesome work, man!
Man, your DIY skills are killer! Awesome trail!
You're the man Seth. Your videos always put a smile on my face...love what you do!
What started it all, actually started watching Seth from this video, now he is one of my favourite youtuber and is the only youtuber where I take the time out of my day to wait for his new videos to come out so I can watch them straight away
Such a shame the video ended
totally agreed...
Wow, your wife must be pretty cool!
Eamon Kelly lol
lol i thought i was the only one who built these kinds of trails in the backyard.
The whole yard is somewhat of an L- shape, so after two weeks, I plan to make a tiny/small trail using the rest of the land as this unused part has a bit of elevation of 2.5 feet.
you shuld ad a little jumpline paralell to berm creek
Make a wooden bridge over the creek!!
He probbally doesn't own the property across the creek, but good idea anyways, Or he could possibly build a jump across, That would be pretty sick
If that is a subdivision, it would be typical that the creek is part of a common area.
Can you link to where you got the stickers and marker please?
I've got a half mile unkept trail next to my house I want to fix up.
We built a BMX track in our back yard with some awesome jumps. Started with a bulldozer to rough it in and the rest was done with shovels and kid power!
1:05 you absolutely smushed that plant
1:44 seth uses the trail even when he's walking
you need to do that so the trail stiffens up
Build a mini jump
I have made around 100 trails we I live and you inspired me to start riding now I have road for 1 year now
When me and my friends were 9-10, we built a "trail" in a piece of community land around a drainage ditch. We built it out of red clay (we live in GA), and built a few jumps and obstacles. We maintained it for an entire season in the winter, before it washed away. There is still a little nub of dirt sticking up at the biggest jump.
I've done something similar at a local park near me, and about every other day me and my friends come and maintain the trails and try new stuff.
Still watching old vids
Same here
I love these vids man keep going! So cool trail!
Yo Seth I'm not trying to be "that guy" but I feel like berm Creek should have some berms. Atleast a much bigger berm on that first turn
You can officially start trail dog training!! 😁
YESS!!
your voice is like Morgan Freeman's it makes everything sound good.
1:05 R.i.p. plant
LOL
Emil Ståhle 😂
Emil Ståhle xD
I'm not super into mountain biking but I like watching it and like to go riding sometimes but honestly most of all I just respect you for making the most of what you got and bringing the trail to your backyard honestly it's inspiring
My friends and I made a 3 foot ramp out of red clay with water and shovels at our local bike paths. Pretty cool, it's a jump everyone now uses.
Yes, I have a bike trail I would recommend building a jump to a drop
Thank you.
Your sign has a friend on it :) 3:23
LOL I saw that too
Alvaro Sanchis i thought i was the only one
Time to burn it down
Thanks!
Come on Seth. We know you want them. YOU NEED SOME DIRT JUMPS!
Ps when are you coming to whistler?
It shouldnt be seths bike shack it should be the "Hack Shack"
+tom scott Thanks Tom! I may use that!
Had the same thought!
Seth's Bike Hacks you should sell advertising space on your roof for the drone views!
build a pump track or a downhill run !
couple pumps before the berm by the creek.
Pump tracks are cool but overrated. Take too much space (you need to destroy a lot to build it) which is a shame in natural places like where Seth lives now.
iainthavinthat true but who knows. He may have other land as well as that in his back yard
that would be a short downhill run tho
We have made our own trail system including big drops, gap jumps, big berms , whale tail and a pump section, also can't wait to see the progression of berm creek
I’m 11 years old and I just moved to Colorado and I live in a camper at a camp site and around the campsite I have made little jumps and drops and trail around the campsite it’s pretty fun but I’m planning to make more in the woods next to it but I got all my inspiration from you and berm creek
There's a little friend of yours on your sign at 3:22
Idk why but i loved this video sooooo much!!!❤️
You should stain the wood for your sign, keeps the wood nice and woody
this is my second time watching your video and just realized that you named a trail after a AC unit. WOW
And coax climb...next to his cable going into to house.
same here.
If it's named after the creek then it should go by it
it does, I mean the trail comes within 10 feet of the creek
make a dirtramp to jump over the creek
marina prela Yes, please!!
Hey Seth, Because of this video I've been building a trail in the woods behind my parents house! Thanks for spreading the stoke!
I'm so doing this at my cabin next summer! I'll have to cut through a ton of thick brush but that will part of the fun. Thanks for the inspiration!
awesome creation 😎👍
Seth got himself new safety glasses!
Everyone like this so maybe Seth may see.
Thanks max
+XxNightHunterxX hey Hayden, I'm really sorry about your friend. You don't need to put a monument in Prince George-you could put one anywhere! Better yet, dedicate one of your rides to him every month. I think your friend would be stoked that you're riding in his memory.
Seth's Bike Hacks this is my cousins account but it's Hayden again and thanks
XxNightHunterxX I'm so sorry
I build and maintain trails in the bush up from my place. It’s fun but hard work! If I could give you some advice it would be to make sure you have a good drainage system and ways to stop creeks and rivers from flowing over your track, trust me it sucks when you loose your track to some water!
I live on an island in the PNW so it's pretty standard to have mountain bike trails wherever but we're lucky enough to have an entire bike park with six trails and we hope to have more.
I would totally do this, but since I have no land( I live in apartments ) I can't, but if if I did my mom probably wouldn't let me do it.
RoKetBunyy. find a park or something, to build a little something out of.
yo seth if you had to choose would you choose your sync'r pro or your orange P7 and why?
AUGUST 2303 id choose orange p7 because it has steel
Potato Burger i dont know which one i would choose
Steel is heavier but has a more compliant ride. Diamondback might provide better bang for buck but if you buy an Orange you are getting bikes made in Halifax, UK which is pretty dang cool IMO
Durrant Miller true
I was thinking the same when Seth crashed the same way I do. I'm 5'6" and always size up to a medium and end up flying over the bars.
Well, if shortening the stem is an option, you're golden. Just do that.
I have changed the stem height with spacers , but it is still hard to dismount which is one of my main worries .
Selling/trading it in is a good move.
