Marianne Faithfull, David Bowie - I Got You Babe

  • The duet was recorded for American television on October 19, 1973 at the Marquee Club in London. The producer Burt Sugarman had approached Bowie about appearing on his late-night NBC program The Midnight Special. According to the Ziggy Stardust Companion, Bowie agreed to appear on the show after being granted complete artistic control for a one-hour special. He put together a cabaret-style show featuring himself and a couple of acts from the 1960s, performing on a futuristic set. Bowie called it “The 1980 Floor Show,” as a pun on the title of his song “1984,” which was played during the opening title sequence. Filming took place over two days. The audiences were composed of Bowie fan club members and other special guests. Due to the cramped quarters in the nightclub, the camera crew wasn’t able to cover more than two angles at any moment, so Bowie and the others had to play the same songs over and over.
On the day “I Got You Babe” was filmed, the musicians and crew worked for ten straight hours.
Faithfull was invited to appear on the show as one of the back-up acts, along with The Troggs and the “flamenco rock” group Carmen. At the very end of the evening, Bowie and Faithfull appeared onstage together-he in a red PVC outfit with black ostrich plumes (he called it his “Angel of Death” costume) and she in a nun’s habit that was, by more than one account, open in the back. “This isn’t anything serious,” Bowie reportedly told the audience. “It’s just a bit of fun. We’ve hardly even rehearsed it.”

I was in high school and stayed up to watch this I loved Bowie and was fascinated by Marianne I can remember everything about watching this that night. I use to wear satin pants and jackets and glitter on my eyes in high school Bowie was such a influence on me at the time. My mom made my outfits I would show her what I wanted and she would make it. Too bad you don’t know they are the good old days while your in them.

For me Bowie will remain as the most beautiful and fascinating male in the world: so British, so cute, whatever he did was perfect and not at all disharmonious or disturbing. Faithfull's voice is so strong and peculiar ; she is also very amazing and the two of them together really works. I love them and thank them for what they have given to the world.

I remember the audience being described as, ¨girls, boys and those who knew not what they were.¨ I think they knew. Somehow, Bowie was able to bring everyone together and it was wonderful! I remember seeing this on The Midnight Special when it first aired. I was still a kid in high school and remember thinking "This is so "wrong" on so many levels". But it was like slowing down to see what happened at a car accident. I couldn't look away. It was disturbing, hilarious, provocative, compelling--and introduced me (and got me hooked) to the music of David Bowie. :)

I was so STUNNED by what Bowie was doing AND he pulled it off on the Midnight Special (!!!) along with the Troggs AND Marieanne Faithfull in a Nun/Nurse outfit (practically in the nude!!) singing Sonny and Cher....it sealed the deal for me and the next night I hit the streets walking on the wild side....I never looked back. Wow. This is a great example of Marianne's voice transitioning from the delicate "As Tears Go By" of the 60's to the glass-gargling "Broken English" of the 80's. Drugs + smoking constantly + screaming insanely + not sleeping = Marianne's vocal changes.

It was supposed to be invites to fan club members only, but we were fearless in those days and security was really lax. You can even read that David said himself that he didn't start drugs until around the Diamond Dogs tour. @@theswissmiss69 I just mean that that performance was a really disorienting cut-up of ideas and imagery. I was 12 years old and the most radical thing Gender-wise I had seen was Alice Cooper ('Be my Lover'). Of course things would change and I was soon exposed to a lot more that was counter-cultural. But now big corporations want to be associated with Pride day, trans people on Bud Light, etc.

Yah think. Being Micks ex girlfriend, a muse for the Stones, and a Capricorn at that... had a lot to do with it. Ambition and just pure moxie with very little talent ( singing) can sometimes get you from here to there (in this case on the Midnight Special). Madonna comes to mind. Marianne is a survivor . You got to hand it to her to not let her growing addiction and no panties stop her from singing with Bowie AND out camping him.. in leather and feathers!!!
