GS oil level

  • So what’s the point of being so picky over having the correct amount of oil in the engine, we all know that once the lubricant drops to a point where it can no longer smooth the movement between the moving parts the engine will over heat and quite likely cease up. Over filling in an extreme case can cause damage as well, a liquid can’t be compressed so if there is too much oil the excess has to go somewhere, it could be forced past oil seals causing them to leak or worse damage bearings, con rods or crank case. So if a false low reading were to show and extra oil was added once the thermostatic valve opened more oil would return to the crank case and it would be over filed.

Do you check the oil level when the bike is leaning on the side stand or when its fully upright?

Hi Joe the hand book says on the centre stand, I have the liquid cooled R1200 GS now which has the sight glass on the right side of the bike, when the bike is on the side stand the oil disappears completely, this is the opposite to the bike in the film, when on the side stand the oil level rises right past the top mark, thanks for commenting, ride safe, regards John.
