- In this video I explain how to look after your flaming Katy plant ( kalanchoe blossfeldiana) after its finished flowering. Kalanchoe blossfeldiana naturally flower over the winter months and then grow leaves and stems over summer. I explain, how much water they need, light levels, pruning, feed and temperature requirements. kalanchoe are easy to grow succulents that will grow rapidly over summer if well looked after. Because flowering is dependent on day length and temperature its possible to control when the plant flowers and so the plant can go for years without flowering, or keep flowering non stop for over a year.

One of my recently acquired kalanchoe needed to be deadheaded, and i didn’t know exactly where to cut the stem, since I’m a very new plant owner and have never cared for one before. Your video answered all my questions and more, it was so informative! Hopefully my kalanchoe will thrive now that I know what conditions suit them best!
I'm in Scotland too and my plant is currently on the windowsill facing the sun (I will shift them now)...but the flowers on my two are only just dying 😅. I live near a hill that shades out the sun completely for about 6 weeks over winter and we gradually start seeing more of it peeping over the hill until summer, when we finally get it for the day, but possibly still have shorter full light than most areas. I live in California and have them in the ground year round. They love the shade here and I'm not tender with them. When the flowers look old I pinch them off with my fingers and pinch off stems and put them in the ground where I want them. They are so easy to grow, the snails have not bothered them (YET,) and they grow and bloom without trouble. Don't have to spray for bugs either at least not yet and I've had them for about 4 years now.

Thanks for this video. I received one as a gift last year. I didn't know it inly flowers at winter. Now its tall and straggly, i didn't realise i had to cut them down.
Mine also doesn't have large leaves, theyre all small.

Interesting on the temperature. I know someone in Tucson that grows these on their back yard covered patio that faces west. It’s hot and dry in Tucson AZ USA.

Could I use a succulent fertilizer on this plant instead of the regular house plant fertilizer you suggest? I have succulent fertilizer and would not have to buy other fertilizer if I can use succulent fertilizer seeing that this is a succulent. I don’t 100% treat it like a succulent though because like you said it is slightly different from other succulents.
Thank you for the video. I bought my plant from a supermarket where I appreciate it may have not been treated well. Do you know when the plant should be repotted, do they like being root bound? If I repot it can I split the plant to make other plants or can you only propogate from cuttings?
They are not too fussy about pot size, you can either prune it to keep it small in it's original pot, or you can repot it and allow it to grow larger, flowering isn't dependent on the plant size, but the bigger the plant the more flowers it will have. Kalanchoe can't be split unless there is more than one plant in the original plant, you should be able to tell by looking at the stems where they meet the compost. However they do propagate easily from cuttings, I will be making a video about Kalanchoe cuttings in a a month or two.
I live in Malaysia, a tropical climate. I intend to keep it indoors, in a brightly lit room and cooler temperature. We get an even 12 hours of sun and 12 hours of night, is that enough to keep the flowers blooming year round?

Thanks for the video, I want my to flower now I'm in London. I have seen people say to put a box over it for 14 hours a day, so I was thinking it required total darkness. Would putting it in my bedroom with the blinds closed for say 12 hours force it to produce flowers, does it also need direct sunlight or will filtered light do when the blinds are open?
It needs almost complete darkness for over 12 hours a day, ideally 14 hours. Bright filtered light should be ok, but some direct sunshine would be better. It will take about a month of this treatment for flower buds to start forming so you will need to be patient.
Perfect timing! I've been looking for guidance with mine. The flowers have all withered away, the leaves look wrinkly too. What do we do with the cuttings, can we propagate them?
If the leaves are wrinkly its probably needs more water, these plants are thirstier than most succulents, although always allow the soil to dry in between waterings as they can easily suffer from over watering. With the cuttings remove a branch and remove most of the leaves from the bottom of the branch so you are left with a bare section of stem. Leave it to dry a little for a couple of days and them place in damp free draining compost, it should root within a month. You will know its rooted when the cuttings starts to grow new leaves.

I don’t have any windows in my house with a strong southern exposure with sun all day during the winter. Do these plants do well under a grow light and If so, how many hours would they need under a grow light? thanks!
Yes they should do well under a grow light, also a few hours of sunlight will be enough, they just won't flower quite as much with less sun. If using a grow light give them 8 to 10 hours a day in winter, they need short days to encourage good flowering.
What is the best plant feed to give them as im new to plants but always wanted to start and I've now got 3 house plants but not sure what's best feeder can anyone help pls
Wait, so when you keep the plant in complete darkness, you do want to expose it to light after 14 hours of complete darkness for around 10 hours before returning to complete darkness?

Is it alright if you can help me figure out how to get dead parts out from the middle of the plant? I really don’t want to harm mine but it’s hard to get these bits out
You might need to use either a sharp thin knife, long scissors or tweezers. If a few small bits are left the plant should be ok.
I have about 7 of them in one big pot and mine are on my porch shaded in afternoon sun but our temperatures get over 100 degrees 🥴 hope I’m not doing everything wrong but I don’t fertilize in the hot weather. Mine are in flower but worried about airflow. It’s really pretty at the moment
They should be fine, they will grow leaves instead of flowers in the hot weather and then flower again when it cools down in winter, just make sure they don't freeze.

when i cut down my katy, it did not sprout more stem. it went brown in the area it was cut and dried up. i doubt it will regrow since that tiny area of the plant is seemingly now dead. any suggestions?
As long as there are leaves lower down on the plant it should send up some new branches after a few weeks. I would recommend removing the brown dried up part. Sometimes if the section that you trim is low down on the plant it will keep growing at the top of the plant and won't grow from the lower branches unless the top of the plant is also trimmed.
Do you keep at windowsill east facing for year round? How do you get it rebloom and when it will?
In winter you can move it to a south facing window as usually east facing windows don't get much light in winter. For reblooming it needs short days and cooler temperatures, if you search my channel you should find a video where I explain how to encourage them to flower again. These plants usually flower over winter and early spring.
I’m asking now. Apparently all flowers dropped. So stems are trimmed. Should I leave them at sundown sill at east or south window? It’s still summer.
Do cut-off Kalachoe stems grow roots?
Yes, they root almost as easily as Jade plants.
Do I cut the burned leaves off
Yes if they are badly damaged or going brown.
When is the best time to report a new plant
Spring or early summer is the best time.
What are you using to clean the dust from the leaves?
I used tissue, but you can also use a dusting cloth or a damp cloth. Just be careful because the leaves are very fragile.
What is tomato feed?
It's feed that is specially made for tomato plants, it is a very common feed and easy to find in garden centres. It has high levels of potassium which is good for fruiting and flowering plants.
What is considered high nitrogen?
When checking a plant feed look for one that has more nitrogen than Potassium or Phosphorus, you want the N number higher than the K or P number.
Do you know why mine was full of flowers, but then over a couple months all of the flowers stayed nice and plump but dropped down and sagged a lot instead of standing straight up. It’s gotten enough sun in the window sill with evening sun 1-6pm, and I allow the plant to go from dry to moist soil. Any ideas on how to perk up the flowers?

Hello. Thank you for your video! This type of plant was given to my daughter by my mom (our daughter's Grandmother) before she passed away quite early in life in 2012. Our daughter has been working hard to keep this plant alive and she has done really well. The plant is around 12 years old. It has gotten quite large and we would like to try to get it smaller and healthier. Do you have any advice on what would be some good steps to help this plant be healthier and to prune it down? I had a look at your plant, it certainly has got large, you will need to cut most of the longest stems back so they are only about five or six inchs long. This will cause the stems to resprout from lower down on the plant. Your best doing this in late spring when the plant has good light levels, warm temperatures and is growing strongly. After pruning make sure you reduce the watering a little as you will find that the plant won't be as thirsty as it will have less leaves to support. Here is a video where I did a similar thing to a Jade plant: ruclips.net/video/8I0D4U6ayio/видео.html The principle is the same, but Kalanchoes are less woody and will respond with lots of leaves and less stems. Also their stems are not as strong and woody. With the branches that you cut off you can make new plants I have made a video here about this: ruclips.net/video/m4UVsiQrX1s/видео.html To make sure that it stays bushy and doesn't get leggy make sure it has higher light levels and prune it every year or two. Kalanchoe need bright light with some direct sunshine, but avoiding hot summer sun or midday sun. You might need to have your plant light on for about 10 hours a day over the darker winter months if you are in a part of the world with dark winters.
