Dr. Tro's story is so familiar to me. I'm also a physician, I've worked out and have run 4-6 miles daily since age 17, I followed the Dietary Guidelines (I did NOT eat junk food) and yet I STILL ended up obese, hypertensive, and with a pulmonary embolus at age 52. I started Insulin Restriction Strategies (Low Carb/High SATURATED Fat/NO "seed oils", Time-restricted feeding) in June 2018. By November 2019, I had lost over 60 pounds, I completely CURED my hypertension, and now at age 55 I have ZERO Metabolic Syndrome factors (including Hg A1C of 5.4, HDL which is DOUBLE what is considered "good" and serum triglycerides that is ONE THIRD the upper limit of normal). I'm ALWAYS "in shape" (i.e., my fitness level does not "Yo-Yo" like it always used to my whole adult life), and I take no medications at all. Plus everything I used to live with which I thought was normal is GONE - no more knee pain, no more chronic sinusitis/"allergies", no more colds/flu (I used to get sick at least 3-4 times/year), no more low-grade post-prandial enteritis (what folks often call "the Itis"). The simple truth is that medications don't even come close to providing the health impact which disease-PREVENTING lifestyle changes provide. Not having Metabolic Syndrome will ALWAYS be better than getting it, then treating it with medications.

LDL and total cholesterol are such weak independent risk factors that they don’t even make the cut for what defines Metabolic Syndrome (while HDL and serum triglycerides do). And when you look at the science, the absolute strongest data consistently shows a NEGATIVE correlation between low LDL and mortality. So yeah, I’ll take a completely fit healthy body free of any Metabolic Syndrome factors with a high LDL and total cholesterol over what I used to be (normal LDL and TC, but also obese and hypertensive) every day of the week and twice on Fridays!
@@labynoe Thank you for a reply; my current doctor seems to be very far behind in that she doesn't even compute the ratio of cholesterol counts and I have PAD which is her reason to say I MUST get it below 200 because of this risk factor. It's difficult for a person without medical training to be stubborn with a very good doctor who is very well respected by her staff and the hospital with which she is affiliated. I'll just have to gently dig in my heels and ask for her patience.

To put it plainly, we were taught and continue to be given wrong information, and following that information is what lead to my poor health, while following what the best data indicates to be true has me more fit today than I've ever been since I was in college. LDL does NOT cause vascular disease, inflammation does. And we know that insulin resistance causes a high inflammatory state, the setting for inflammatory damage to blood vessels which are then repaired with LDL-containing plaques. To say LDL is the cause of the problem because it is found inside vascular plaques makes about as much sense as saying firemen set all fires because you always find them at the scene of burning buildings, and then saying the best way to address the arson problem is to get rid of firemen. That makes no sense at all. The answer is to identify and stop the actual arsonist setting the fires. And the best data informs us that the arsonist setting our "Diseases of Civilization" bonfire is our high carbohydrate/high PUFA seed oil laden diets as well as our insane meal eating frequency which has turned modern humans into insulin-production factories which will almost inevitably become insulin resistant to some degree at some point in life. I got control of my health by pursuing three targets: 1) Make less insulin (low carb/high fat, especially saturated fat); 2) Make insulin less often (time-restricted feeding); and 3) Avoid vegetable "seed" oils and other "factory fats" like the plague.

I eat carnivore and have for almost 2 years. My autoimmune symptoms have vanished. I will never accept the standard physicians advice about the standard American diet.
I find that the best thing for hunger if on a keto diet is to have a bulletproof coffee. It kills autophagy but it does not spike insulin. That's what Dr. Jason Fung recommends for his patients if they find their will powder is declining while on his required 30 hours fasts that he requires his patients do twice a week.
That's an n=1 strategy. I have found that inflames my appetite and an hour later I want to eat anything not nailed down. I have read this is the experience of many people. Years ago I did one 36 hour fast a week. I drank black tea with a splash of skim milk and non calorie sweeteners. I was the healthiest and in the best shape of my life. That tiny bit of skim milk did not hurt my fast. We all have to find what works

We have more tools at our disposal to count calories now than in anytime in our history. The public's awareness of calories is greater than anytime in our history. Yet, we still are experiencing a burgeoning epidemic of obesity and associated complications (i.e. type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.etc). Hence, something about CICO approach towards weight loss does not work for most people most of the time. This is not to claim that calories are mythical. They are a metric of something real. However, as the broad span of human history where we were relatively slim attests, it is NOT the tracking of calories which is pivotal to weight control. It is the consumption of foods that are 1)Not addictive and 2)Truly satiating that will ultimately lead to SUSTAINABLE weight loss and maintenance. This is the true efficacy of low carb in that, more than any other criteria, it most effectively meets these benchmarks by jettisoning most processed foods.
Also the CICO model is flawed from the start. #1 is obvious even if you aren't a scientist/nutritionist. Protein and fat are structural components of your body,they don't all get used for energy production. The also get used for maintenance and repair and hormone and enzyme production etc. Carb are almost entirely used for energy production. #2 Calories are measured by oxidizing (burning) macronutrients in a laboratory setting. Fats have twice the calories as carbs and proteins if oxidized directly. If fats are converted to ketones first they produce way more energy than can be explained by the calorie (burning) model. Lots of long lasting energy from just a little bit of fat. It's awesome when you feel the difference personally. I really don't understand all of the science. I'm a layman (welder,equip operator, bookworm) that has been LCHC/paleo/primal for about 7 yrs now. I read everything I can find and pay attention to what my body tells me, N=1 experiment, ongoing. PS-life is an experiment, period.

I am addicted to sugar 😢 I'm not addicted to food. I can go all day without eating. But pop tea energy drinks etc snacks, I end up snacking at night because I'm so "busy during the day " so I snack at bedtime. Totally ugh. When I quit the pop, tea, especially energy drinks.... There is a REAL emotional reaction.. like I lost my best friend.

But being that 1 tea or 1 pop or 1 energy drink was more carbs than allowed in a day. I wasn't very successful. I can't drink anything diet. I get migraines. I also ended up with serious stomach bloat. Couldn't eat for days I was soooooo bloated. :( I backed off keto and started some digestive enzymes. And plan to restart keto. But my sugar addiction is going to be rough. I have tried several times to quit. Like I said, it's like loosing my best friend
You recognize that you are addicted to sugar. And boy, I know how you feel. It almost killed me before I could break the addiction. Start slow. Cut out the snacking at night. When you can do that, then only drink half of your pop. Start introducing other things. If you can't do diet drinks, then start doing unsweetened tea. I know it sounds terrible to begin with, but you do get used to it and as you get off the sugar you will be surprised that you don't need it as much. Then start subtracting more sugar from your diet until you are only eating whole and unprocessed foods. That is the easiest way to stay away from sugar. But you can break your addiction if you really feel the need. The sugar is what is giving you the bloating when you try to introduce keto. You have to cut the sugar before you can proceed. Good luck.
Do you think you're addicted to the taste of your drinks/snacks, or are you addicted to the effect they have on your body? I ask because I, too, was so addicted to sugar from a young age, but was never able to stop that until my body became "fat adapted". This caused my cravings to be reduced by about 90% and thus become controllable. Before that I was a total carboholic.
Sugary foods and drinks like energy drinks promote the release of dopamine just like narcotics, so you are in fact addicted. Sugary food promotes the release of the hormone ghrelin which gives you hunger pangs, and that's why you are snacking. Sugary food also supresses the hormone leptin which is meant to tell you when you've had enough, so you tend to keep on eating longer than you should. The answer is to wean yourself off that sugary taste, maybe by getting a different flavour hit like spicy foods.
Somebody should tell Dr. K that his mic is directional. When he leans down it doesn't pick up his voice as well. He needs to move it much farther away from his mouth and point it towards his face instead of the way it is oriented.
So glad they're on this mission, and it is a mission to save millions of lives thru low carb and intermittent fasting. Diabetes Heart Disease and Cancer are a result of high carb diets and doctors like these are trailblazing and brave to fight this contradicting system currently in medicine.
Whenever I tell anyone I’ve been a type 1 diabetic for 50 years and usually eat only one meal a day, I get a horrified reaction and a disgustingly smug pronouncement that I MUST EAT SIX SMALL MEALS A DAY. “That means at least six small shots of insulin a day,” I say. “That’s a good thing?” They can’t tell me why I’m wrong but I MUST BE. I have not seen such faith from even the most devout religious people I’ve known.
There is no such thing as food addiction. If you are addicted to it, by definition, it is not food. Dr. Robert Cywes has more on this concept. You cannot be addicted to something you must have.
Hi, i heard you mention that people say any diet works, well i know personally it doesn't! did Slimming World, did not work for me as it does involve a lot of carbs!....could never work out why it did not work for me but did for my husband! Now i know why....i was diagnosed as pre diabetic, since then i have stopped carbs, sugars and refined etc., now i am losing the weight, which i am very happy about. The other thing over many many years i have been a low fat member.......but i have a slightly fatty liver so that didnt work either!...so getting there and find your chats very interesting, thank you
The dietary WFPB vs KETO split is caused by fat and heart disease. I have yet to hear ANY doctor say that someone with heart disease should eat a high fat diet. This channel has not addressed that issue head on either. It is entirely possible that a rise in blood sugar leads to high cholesterol, to my knowledge there is no double blind study attempting to address this. I 100% support getting a blood glucose monitor. After I got one I was able to get to reduce my weight easily because I could see what the problem was.
Staying away from carbs:almost all commercial baked goods have carrageenan or gums these days. This fact eliminated all of them for me. Meaning, I would have to make my own or go out of the way to find one to buy. So this was the first step to cut down. Work in progress for the rest of it… 🙏🌿♥️
If you want to get rid of cravings permanently, you don't need coaching or therapy. You just need to go carnivore. Meat is food. Plants can be medicines but are often addictive drugs and often contain toxins that keep the body from absorbing nutrition. So people eating plants are often overfed but under-nourished. This is not an emotional/psychological issue. This is actual hunger. On a cellular level, plant eaters are legitimately starving even when obese.
Well that was OK but just eat OMAD with some extended fasts and when you eat, eat Carnivore with a fatty meat , eggs, cheese and other animal based nutritious high nutrient foods! and yeh, Dr Jason Fung MD, is magical! And remember, Fasting is free and can be done anywhere at anytime!

The “cheat days” Let’s ask ourselves: who/what are we cheating? Are we really getting away with something? If we think we are getting away with something - that’s where the cheating lies (no pun intended 😂) 😔 So let’s face it, if I “cheat”, I will NOT get away with it, the consequences WILL BE THERE, and I will have to deal with that HONESTLY. Replace the full sugar energy drinks with no sugar ones try drinking Bang instead.

Hi, i heard you mention that people say any diet works, well i know personally it doesn't! did Slimming World, did not work for me as it does involve a lot of carbs!....could never work out why it did not work for me but did for my husband! Now i know why....i was diagnosed as pre diabetic, since then i have stopped carbs, sugars and refined etc., now i am losing the weight, which i am very happy about. The other thing over many many years i have been a low fat member.......but i have a slightly fatty liver so that didnt work either!...so getting there and find your chats very interesting, thank you

The dietary WFPB vs KETO split is caused by fat and heart disease. I have yet to hear ANY doctor say that someone with heart disease should eat a high fat diet. This channel has not addressed that issue head on either. It is entirely possible that a rise in blood sugar leads to high cholesterol, to my knowledge there is no double blind study attempting to address this.
I 100% support getting a blood glucose monitor. After I got one I was able to get to reduce my weight easily because I could see what the problem was.

Staying away from carbs:almost all commercial baked goods have carrageenan or gums these days. This fact eliminated all of them for me. Meaning, I would have to make my own or go out of the way to find one to buy. So this was the first step to cut down. Work in progress for the rest of it…

If you want to get rid of cravings permanently, you don't need coaching or therapy. You just need to go carnivore. Meat is food. Plants can be medicines but are often addictive drugs and often contain toxins that keep the body from absorbing nutrition. So people eating plants are often overfed but under-nourished. This is not an emotional/psychological issue. This is actual hunger. On a cellular level, plant eaters are legitimately starving even when obese.
So are you more likely to have Hypertriglyceridemia of you had pancreatitis? What are the implications if that when it comes to being low carb?
Well that was OK but just eat OMAD with some extended fasts and when you eat, eat Carnivore with a fatty meat , eggs, cheese and other animal based nutritious high nutrient foods! and yeh, Dr Jason Fung MD, is magical! And remember, Fasting is free and can be done anywhere at anytime!
Dr Tro, to be fair, those free zoom meeting for your classes was the charitable, therefore tax-deductible, service to mankind - your CPA can figure it out. But in fact you should be entitled for reimbursement from (?) for COVID care.

Let’s ask ourselves: who/what are we cheating? Are we really getting away with something? If we think we are getting away with something - that’s where the cheating lies (no pun intended 😂) 😔
So let’s face it, if I “cheat”, I will NOT get away with it, the consequences WILL BE THERE, and I will have to deal with that HONESTLY.
This “cheating meals allowed” cuteness has been around long enough. Maybe a new word combo needs to replace it - less cute to give us a second thought before taking that step
