Protein is not the enemy. In fact, Dr. Naiman says it's hard to imagine anyone eating too much protein.
What about longevity, mTOR, and gluconeogenesis? Dr. Naiman says there is no evidence to suggest that these are concerns on a well formulated low-carb, high-protein diet. In fact, it's quite the opposite - he believes we need to worry about the risks of too little protein in our diets.
In addition, I think you'll enjoy hearing about Dr. Naiman's passion for efficient exercise. Although we may not all end up with his impressive physique after just 15 minutes of exercise, he shares his approach to helping his patients adopt a short, healthy life-long exercise routine.
Dr. Naiman's experience may not match the classic LCHF approach, but he sees success with his patients and wants to share that message.

From someone who was on the strict keto 4:1 protocol for epilepsy for years and who has now switched to carnivore, I think Dr. Ted is onto something here. Being fat adapted is important but chasing higher numbers on the ketone meter is not. Keto improved my seizure disorder significantly but, on carnivore, my disorder is completely gone. That's an N=1 study but it is the only one that matters to me.

Hey, it's amazing to hear that you've "cured" your epilepsy. I'm epileptic too... Over 35 years - I'm 41 now. I'm on the carnivore diet, it will be seven months in a few days, and my seizures have stopped too! How amazing it that! I wish I knew about carnivore years ago, but give thanks, I know about it now 😊

I have asked for a couple of years, "hey, why can't I do a low fat version of keto?" since I am not losing weight eating all this butter, cream and oil. The answer always is "it's not keto unless you eat 70% fat." The reason I am given for not losing is that I don't fast enough. It's never due to eating too much fat. Finally I get some clarity from Dr Naiman.

    • @randomanda

It's not eating the fat that causes weight loss on keto, it's the absence of carbs. We shouldn't be concerned with adding extra fat, just not afraid of fat in meat, eggs, etc and fat for cooking or flavor (butter on vegetables) but we don't need to add extra butter to a fatty steak or snack on fat bombs. 😜 😉

DonaArtist Actually I’m sorry I forget sometimes that I’m eating a maintenance diet right now. There isn’t anything wrong with the level of fat you’re eating if you’re trying to lose weight. Experiment with the ratio until you feel good and are where you want to be. I would keep my macros the same for at least a week at a time to see how it works and how I feel and then adjust. I ended up liking more fat less carbs. Just feels better. Sometimes I start to feel too skinny and then I’ll eat some carbs put some weight back on.

I know personally when i lose weight my fats are 1:1 to1.5 to 1 of protein. At maintenance its 1.5 to 2:1 fat to protein. Less exogenous fats, we burn more endogenously. I think women need a bit more fat for their menstrual cycle. Without increasing fat, I fell into a lean range where I looked sick.. And I have a chronic illness that leaves me bed ridden and fasting so want a bit of buffer. 2:1 fat to protein is 3/4 of my plate or more as fatty meats and a small amount of veggies if I feel like them. Definitely have less appetite in the summer, have played around with 2mad all protein but i gained..carbs stay 15net or lower and do mostly omad for over 2 yrs. If i eat too high carbs or protein i get hungry in the morning and not for me. I value protein and try to get to 1.2g/kg.

I think when you start a low carb/keto diet coming from a high carb diet, you should go high fat during the first 3-4 weeks to change your metabolism toward fat adaptation. Once you are fat adapted, you should lower fat and increase protein. I think that is one of the reason many people hit a weght loss plateau after a few weeks of strict keto : too much fat not enough protein.

Tell me please. I'm reading a book - eat fat get thin by Mark Hyman. Somewhere in the book he says when you eat fat, it keeps your insulin low, shutting off fat storage, and raises your metabolism so you burn bodyfat all day and night. So you can eat fat and burn bodyfat. Eating fat doesn't make you fat.
Too much protein raises insulin - which is what I'm trying to avoid, and in raising insulin, you turn fat storage on - which is what we don't want.
How is eating more protein and lowering fat going to help keep insulin levels down?
Btw, I'm carnivore 7 months now, high fat, 24hr IF, and down over 50lb. 20lb left to go 😃

Test and log your own blood glucose levels and you will find out what works for you as an individual. I've found meals of high fat proteins and vegetables barely raise my glucose levels. They stay at around 4.8 mmol 1 hour postprandial and do not kick me out of ketosis. A few nuts and 50gm of berries I see around 5.2 mmol and ketones under .5 mmol.

I always added a slab of butter to my meat and scrambled my eggs in butter, so now I’ve stopped that, i feel i get quite weak/tired towards the evening.. that never happened before. I’m wondering if I’m going through another transitional phase - instead of using dietary fat for energy to using more body fat for energy..? If i look at it simply, it makes sense, but I don’t know.. i will get a blood glucose monitor though. This would be helpful. Thanks for responding xxx

    • @laurawhy8813
      @laurawhy8813 3 года назад

Just Debbie... keep with what is working. If you hit a stall and real stall then i would decrease fat and increase protein. I think that even a higher protein diet which might increase insulin is 5000 times better than what most people are eating and probably a great improvement over what you used to eat so I wouldn't worry about that. Do what works for getting you healthier and that might be different from what works for me. Also if you'd like to see where you are at with insulin get a fssting insulin test done. If your doctor won't order it there are companies online who will. Keep up the good work!!

Excellent interview, Dr Scher asked some great questions. I have done LCHF and keto for around 5 years, and I am slimmer and healthier for it. I notice that I never gain weight, my pants fit me the same, and my bloodwork is where I like it. I have had a problem with the last 5-7 pounds of weight however, mostly around my stomach. After watching videos from Dr Ted and Maria Emmerich, I have begun to cut back on fat and add extra protein, which goes against the keto idea of 70 plus % macros from fat. For the first time in awhile I have finally began losing inches and pounds from my waistline. I basically switched to leaner meats, really cutting back on cheese, olives, dark chocolate, avocados, and pork rinds- fats. I eat twice daily- some combination of leaner steak, hamburger, eggs, seafood, and pork

There’s so many Low Carb/Carnivore people online now, that I find the information is becoming confused, as am I. Some say increase fat 70-80%, lower protein, and yet others say lower fat and increase protein, as clear as mud!!! 🤯 I sincerely thank you both for clearing up this issue for me and I now know I can cut back the fat and increase the protein (within reason/till satiated) without any problems 😉 by the way, I’m 63 and want to be healthy for the first time in my life!!! 😘

@@No_Frills_Carnivore That's not my experience. I gained almost 20 lbs eating a high fat Keto diet. I needed to gain weight back after cancer surgery, and this was a great way to accomplish it. But, I have never lost weight with Keto. I have, however, lost weight rapidly with high whole foods carb, low fat. Of course, the calories were much lower that way. Calories very much count, and fats a high in it! It's a balance sheet, pure and simple.

I recently did 6 sets of 32 jump squats (about 1 minute per set) and my legs were shattered for a week. Two weeks after that session I did 4 sets of 50 jump squats with no muscle pain subsequently. Give the body a big shock and it will adapt remarkably well.

Hi very very good interview! Do you think there is a link between energy toxicity and epilepsy? If someone go over he's energy storage capacity and over feed with high energy to protein ratio food ( very sugary food for exemple) will this surplus of energy that the body can't handle at this moment will provoke a seizure?
