I cant believe how good racing sims are nowadays. From just decades of tweaking the tire models and physics to what you can achieve in your home with great racing sim hardware. Great stuff!

Le Mans will certainly help, especially if we also get 70s prototypes and 90s GT cars as I hope/expect :)
Road America is local to me and I've been attending races there for 30yrs. I now run many laps there on my sim. I watched this race live on tv and remember the Bryan Herta turn 5 incident. I'm thinking Michael Andretti and Al Unser Jr may have still been racing at this time as well as Bobby Rahal, whom Herta was driving for. Regarding the train on the back side I knew there was a track back there but on AMS2 is first I've seen a train on it. Cool AMS2 is my new favorite sim after using AC for last few years. Side note: Give the V8 Super cars a try on either RA or Watkins Glen. What a hoot they are to drive.
Watkins Glen has become one of my favorites to race in AMS2, especially now that the AI has a corrected line. They are still slow through the outer loop, but they no longer reliably punt you through the inner loop hah. I'll give it a go with v8 supers.
Thanks for putting this up! I immediately went and got this! I used to go to the CART races at Laguna Seca, talked to Herta, Fittipaldi etc. I did racing school there as well, and I was in the stands for the famous "the pass" of Zanardi over Herta in the corkscrew. Getting these cars back after all these years feels like coming home! Brilliant liveries, physics and AI. This game rocks!
My fav fuel saving tips : lift eary in the braking zone, let the car coast just a BIT longer through the curve, and dont top out on the big stretch, rather hold the throttle at 90% so if top speed is 300km, hold at 295. hope this helps anyone who reads this edit: if you THINK you need fuel, go in at 3 laps left, grab fresh tires while youre there. its gonna take a lap to warm the tires and another lap to break into the time loss for pitting
I remember that Herta crash vividly... It was one of the Gurney AAR Toyotas that climbed up his car. Took what seemed forever to get the car off and get him out, but he just walked away... The Herta's have a knack for scaring the crap out of people with their crashes... See Colton's Indy flip on board... Great vid as always. LOVE the AMS2 updates. They got it right. Finally.
I live near the track and the train tracks are definitely not that close to the track. They are possibly 200ft away and that area of the track the elevation drops with a hill down to maybe 75 ft where the tracks are actually located. Im presuming it was added there to make the track feel more immersive. Turn 6 on this track is by far my least favorite especially when the sun is setting. Its kind of a blind corner and if youre in a fast car you can lose traction if you dont hit your braking point just right coming up that hill. You truly dont get a sense of the elevation changes until you play in VR( which I do in iRacing). Its amazing how accurate it is. I had never turned many laps in Road Atlanta in VR until recently and I couldnt believe how much of a difference there was between monitors and VR when it came to the elevation of the tracks.
Your AMS 2 videos have convinced me to buy my first gaming PC in the next month or so. Gonna get something refurbed and fairly low cost for now and enjoy some long distance IndyCar AI races. Looking forward to places like Road America, Cleveland, Indy, Gateway and some fantasy races like Adelaide
I don't know if it's the timbre of your voice or the excellent commentary but it is so much fun to watch your videos. Great video--as always. I know this didn't end as you wanted, but you were commentating and keeping us entertained the whole time...a major distraction and energy sap. I would consider using the more sophisticated speedometer and tires widgets--way more useful information than the very basic one you are using.
is it just me or is the AI's acceleration out of corners insane? Other than that, it looks pretty exciting, I've always loved the CART cars in this game.
Yeah, that's common across a lot of stuff in AMS2. The AI has always been really early on the brakes so it's easy to overtake them into the corner, but then they have magic grip on the exits, especially on higher difficulties. One of the main things I hope they can tune out in the future
The AI is being worked on for sure. I find it is so much better than before, but I still have some car and track combos where I am tuning the difficulty to balance between stronger and weaker points in a lap to avoid having like 2 free passes per lap in certain braking zones vs maybe getting rolled out of each corner to a straight away.
@@benjiesau1497 iracing has the best Ai right now. You can tweak each car/driver in multiple ways. RF2 you get the Ai that does that wobble through the corners, it’s kind of funny. I think the AI aren't doing as many separate strategies since the fuel burn was so high and one lap is a disproportionately high % of the tank so there aren't as many options to stretch or shorten a stint by just a little. On a longer length race or even a short one without accelerated fuel burn the stops will be a bit more realistic?

See, I even mirrored your race to a degree! Out of interest do you recall your qually time. I did a 42.5 and wondered if that was decent?
People forget, but CART only got stronger in the first few years of the IRL split, and it really seemed like the IRL was not going to be long for this world...somehow at some point this was retconned to "Michigan '95 was a mess and CART was doomed from the beginning of the split" but it's really not true. 1996-2001 in CART were as good as any other period in indycar racing and maybe even better. Two things during the 2001 season let the IRL get the upper hand: 1. When Penske followed Ganassi in cherry-picking Indy (and having their way with the clown show that was the IRL field at the time), it raised the legal question of whether appearing in both CART and IRL put Marlboro in violation of the then-fairly-new "you can only sponsor one sport" rule for tobacco brands...and the answer came back yes, which is why only the chevrons appeared on the cars with no other branding. At that point the writing was on the wall that Marlboro was going to push Penske to run the full IRL schedule and ditch the series he founded 2. the horsepower started getting 2000 when Toyota blew the whistle on Honda exploiting (and cultivating) turbulence in the intake plenum to defeat the pop-off valve, and Honda and Toyota both eventually quit over the ensuing controversy after it spilled over into 2001. The dumbest part was that Toyota actually made noises about quitting first, and then Honda quit because they felt CART had tried too hard to appease Toyota by promising an IRL-esque NA formula for 2003, and then Toyota quit because Honda wasn't going to be there anymore and they both went to the IRL. It was an issue that would have been moot just a few years later since pop-off valves were dinosaur tech for regulating boost anyway and would soon no longer be used to enforce boost limits regardless.
I'm sorry but I actually had to laugh out loud at the end. Great entertainment. You should have definitely boxed with two laps to go, that way you would not have had to drive in lean and do any fuel saving. But the crash made it all irrelevant anyway. You got a new viewer for sure though :)
just did a race at Suzuka in the 1993 cars and the formula ultimate gen 2, no matter what it would seem that the AI is just faster than you down the straights, annoyingly so. the racing is better overall but there are still some rather annoying issues with the AI, huge step in the right direction though.

At that point the writing was on the wall that Marlboro was going to push Penske to run the full IRL schedule and ditch the series he founded
2. the horsepower started getting 2000 when Toyota blew the whistle on Honda exploiting (and cultivating) turbulence in the intake plenum to defeat the pop-off valve, and Honda and Toyota both eventually quit over the ensuing controversy after it spilled over into 2001.
You can commentate and gesticulate during driving. I would shred my car by doing so. ☺
I love AI racing. Was very nice to watch.
Great video!
Is that a Heusinkveld sequential shifter next the their handbrake? Never seen that before.
Correct! It's HE's radical MagShift that just came out. I hear it's awesome 🙃
just did a race at Suzuka in the 1993 cars and the formula ultimate gen 2, no matter what it would seem that the AI is just faster than you down the straights, annoyingly so.
the racing is better overall but there are still some rather annoying issues with the AI, huge step in the right direction though.
Looks like there was a safety car on the last lap after all.
At least you didn't have to pit again!
This was peak IndyCar. US has a long history of taking great racing series and ruining them.
Tragic end for Richie Axelson.
