I had the chance to meet George one day when I drove by his house and stopped to look. He invited me to come up and just sit for a while. He was such a kind person, he spoke to me like he knew me just like his songs speak to so many people. When he sang, he had a gift that let him pull you into his life. That was Mr. Jones

George Jones had a unique style of singing. One of his biggest hits , “He Stopped Loving Her Today “ will have you bawling. Another singer named Lefty Frizzell had a way of singing that may have inspired George.

George Jones was a very big fan of Hank Williams. In George Jones’ early recordings in the 50’s he tried to mimic Hank Williams. Until his record label told him to stop doing that and find your own sound.

❤ Wow...I hadn't heard George in a (TOO) long time. You are SPOT on with your "assessment" if arguably the MOST iconic country singer of all time. Not only did I grow up LISTENING to him but, was fortunate enough to know him since I was a young girl. My family are, (were) both writers, and GREAT FRIENDS with him. They had 13 cuts with him through the years. She worked at his publishing company for 3 years of I remember correctly, then going to the GREAT TREE PUBLISHING COMPANY. His voice HAS always had a "weathered" quality. He's UNMISTAKABLE. ARTIST, STYLIST, ICON...I Sure miss him. Thank you for bringing him to a NEW generation... we ALL can use a little, "POSSUM" in our lives❤

In his prime George Jones had a entirely unique voice able to go from deep baritone to soaring tenor in a single verse but this is the voice of man almost five decades into his career. All the physical abuse and the the vagaries of age may have robbed him of his range but assuaged his gift by allowing to attain a lived-in quality. Live a favorite pair or jeans. They fit and almost no other pair will do.

George Jones vocal ability is really underrated. I’m not a huge country fan but he is one of my favorites. Have a listen to “Bartenders Blues” The runs he does are so smooth and effortless. Not to mention he is well into the higher middle range that many of us male singers struggle with. Listen to that song and you’ll see he had mix voice mastered and I’m assuming he probably didn’t even know that’s what he was doing.

Indeed George struggled with alcohol for most of his life. He was a very shy guy who hated performing, and used to figure that a couple drinks before a show would calm his nerves. But he might end up drinking all night and missing the show. He could be very kind - he’d pick up a hitchhiker and drive him to wherever he was going, even in another state.
But his drinking and his irresponsible behavior drove his wife to distraction. Tammy Wynette was a great country singer in her own right, and they often sang together, but she worried his drinking would kill him, and whenever she confronted him about it he’d get pissed off, and they’d fight. Famously she once hid his car keys and the old boy just got on his riding mower and drove down the highway to the store.
She finally left him, and I think that shock might’ve helped him. Having destroyed his marriage and his career, he did finally get cleaned up. He and Tammy remained close. I think he always loved her. Finally in the 1990’s he had a career renaissance that really began with “Choices” and the rest of the “Cold Hard Truth” album. This song, and the title track, really felt like Jones coming clean about his flaws and his frailty, and owning his bs, and it’s truly heart wrenching in its honesty - but he always had that gift as a singer, and at this stage in his career, to see this lovable train wreck of a man finally find stability and maturity, and to sing about that… well it was perfect. My dad has always been a Jones fan, but I became one when I heard “Choices.”

There's a terrific album called "Rhythm, Country and Blues" that had duets between country and blues artists, reimagining in alternation classic country and blues songs. George Jones did a great duet on there with B.B. King of "Patches". I'm also very partial to Al Green and Lyle Lovett's cover of "Funny How Time Slips Away", and the Alan Touissant/Chet Atkins cover of "Southern Nights".
I'd also recommend checking out the very moving "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", by George Jones in 1985.

The cocaine and whiskey had already done a job on his voice when he was singing this so beautifully. Waylon freaking Jennings had an eight hundred dollar a day coke habit in the Seventies, and he told Jones, Jones was out of control. His being alive at this point would have been a big enough accomplishment let alone in good voice.

The studio cut of this song hits a little harder, live performances were always up and down with George and that's not a negative on his ability you can definitely tell when he was fatigued or having a little trouble because of the bad audio in the venue. But this song is one of his signatures for a lot of people because it is autobiographical and I would recommend listening to the studio cut for sure. 10/10 for George.

I'm curious out of all Georges work you picked this one. Ask any country singer who they wish they could sound like and who the best overall country singer is, its George. i like Keith Whitley its far more emotional for me. but in terms of what captures everything you wanna capture the best. It's George. get the consensus, everybody knows George. not everyone likes Hank but everybody can find a George song they find meshes with their personal jigsaw puzzle.

Great analysis, Beth. George was definitely not at the top of his game vocally during this performance, but thank you for pointing out that, sometimes, that's ok. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you didn't check out a George Jones performance when he was in his prime. As many have stated, the song He Stopped Loving Her Today is required George listening. But also check out his cover of a James Taylor song called Bartenders Blues. There's a great live version from Knoxville, Tennessee that can be found online. George Jones truly was one of the best, most unique vocalists of any genre.

Yes! This performance was shortly after he crashed into a cement pillar of a bridge just after recording this song. It is an injustice to judge George vocally on this one appearance. This is probably the worst video she could have chosen

I'm always excited to hear country music from one of my favorite reactors!!! 🤠
That being said, I've been trying to get someone to check out Sugarland. (more pop-country that 'true' country) Jennifer Nettles is one of my favorite voices!!

Thank you for sharing George Jones' singing this special tune. I found the link to hear Billy Yates sing it as well... Billy wrote the song Choices and was very close friends to George. ruclips.net/video/D-hlyWN9A-c/видео.html This is one of the times the songwriter sings it as well as the one who made it a hit.

Whitney Houston is not in the class of George Jones. In this clip he is 70 years old and still recovering from a car wreck when he was drunk driving and crash through a bridge. It took rescuers 2 hours to free him and he was on life support for a week

Good that you’re checking out Jones. Try something older like a good year for the roses (not the duet with Alan Jackson) or this one ruclips.net/video/M6j2YBD--1U/видео.html
